Wow I love how much more vivid and profound these lyrics are. I especially love that instead of Frollo declaring “it’s not my fault, I’m not to blame” He asks “is it my fault?” I love the idea that instead of shifting the blame on to someone else, being Esmerelda, he’s willing to put the blame on himself for being sinful and it makes him all the more obsessed with capturing Esmerelda as a way to appease Heaven and have him absolved of his sins. And yet by the end he willingly falls deeper into his lust and ambitions. Damn this just got so much more tragic.
The original English lyrics don't seem super profound if you do not take them in the greater context of the song. The greater beauty of Hellfire comes from the fact that the lyrics are juxtaposed to the Archdeacon, Monks, and Robbed Apparitions singing in Latin. The Latin being sung by the is a modified, older version of the Confiteor, aka the Penitential Act, in which the person reciting acknowledges/confesses their sins at the start of a Catholic Mass. The prayer is continued after the opening scene with the Archdeacon and Monks and acts as a counterpoint to Frollo's lines and act as a window into his subconscious. For example (F = Frollo & A&M = Archdeacon & Monks): F: Beata Maria you know I'm so much purer than the common, vulgar, weak, licentious crowd. A&M: Quia peccavi nimis (That I have sinned) F: Then tell me, Maria, why I see her dancing there? Why her smold'ring eyes still scorch my soul? A&M: Cogitatione (In thought) F: I feel her, I see her. J'adore cette version de la chanson aussi. Les paroles français sont fort que celui que je grandi avec, lequel était le version anglais. Bien que, j'aime aussi le version anglais car il est le original langue des film et ce flux mieux dans comparaison. Les deux versions sont impressionant dans leur propre droit. ^_^

La façon dont il prononce "Seigneur, pitié pour elle/Seigneur, pitié pour moi.." me donne des frissons à chaque fois... je sais pas, c'est ce petit décalage, la voix qui devient soudainement presque lasse, glissante...
J'ai toujours interpréter sa comme frollo qui réalise ce qu'il est sur le point de faire et qui est choqué et horrifié mais qui une fois qu'il se retourne est déterminé à aller jusqu'au bout même si il sait que c'est mal .
C'est précisément pour ça que j'adore cette chanson. On est capable d'identifier toutes les émotions que Frollo ressent. Les paroles sont magnifiques mais terrifiants aussi et la musique est vraiment merveilleuse! (Désolé si j'ai des erreurs, le français n'est pas mon premier mangue)

in France there's less taboo about hell, Lucifer or anything about them, than in the us. For example I don't think there's no insults with those words, unlike the english language where People can say "damn you" or "what the hell". and as a kid I never knew what were bacchanalia.
2 sentences are poorly translate (I'm French): 1:17 "Obsene fletrissure" => "insane scars". Here, fletrissure means defamation => "obsene defamation". 3:12 "Fais qu'elle s'offre a moi"=> "make her mine". It should be something like "make her offering herself to me". The rest is pretty good!
I do still enjoy the English version, but as far as all the dubbed versions of this--this is DEFINITELY the best. So intense. Also LOVE the translations they did.
Yeah, not just this, I generally find that French dubs are the best among European Disney dubs. Germans, Spanish, Italian, Greek, they all had bad voices... Maybe except the german Belle. French (France French, because Canadian French dubs sucked) somehow found voice actresses/actors who sound very similar to original English cast.
I prefer the Polish version. IN Polish there is real pain in his voice when he says the part that goes "Why I see her dancing there" in the English version.
This version is my favorite. I think Hellfire/Infernale is the best solo by a Disney villain and is soooo underrated ! But what amuses me is that Frollo's voice has this kind of parisian accent people used to have. Jean Piat sounds like he could've hosted the French news in the 70s, 60s lmao.
I don't understand. What is the issue? Frollo lived in Paris, so he should have had Paris accent. Is that the fact that his Paris accent in this song is too modern (1970's) for Frollo (who lived centuries ago) that amuses you?

He sounds old even in his accent which is cool? the one thing that's kinda "wrong" is that Frollo is a judge, and Piat's accent is slightly more popular
Don't mind me, I know not a word of French. I'm just here to appreciate the mindblowing effort that must have been put into translating this song into another language while keeping the rhyme scheme, the meter, and as much of the original meaning as possible (while surely taking a few intentional artistic deviations). That is *hard*.
But it's Disney.......it was, of course, originally done in English despite the origins of the story. I mean, imagine if Disney had to re-create each of their "borrowed" fairytales in their native languages. T'would be quite ridiculous.

One of the characters speaks Doric Scots, but Scots didn't really start to evolve until the 1100s-1200s, and wasn't really a proper language until the 1400s. Besides, that character speaks the modern dialect of it and only does it for comic effect. Aside from that, despite the fact that it would be cool and interesting to do them in the original language, I think most people would be disinterested.

French translation always takes a lot of liberties compare to, for example, the french canadian one. Sometimes it's a shame (I can't stand Frozen in french. it's not bad, but half of the meanig is lost !). But sometimes, it's so good ! My favorite one is prabably what they made for Jack's Lament in Nightmare Before Christmas.

This song is exactly why, when I decided to watch The Hunchback of Notre Dame for the first time, I did so in French. It adds a feeling of authenticity, of immersion. That, and I seem to prefer singing in French to English. Dunno why.
It might be because rhyming rules are different in french and english which create very different rythms in songs. The words flow different just with how the language works.

As someone who is learning French, I sung this one semester for one of my assignments, while everyone else was singing from La Belle et La Bête. Needless to say, I threw out my voice and I think I kind of butchered the accent, but I got the atmosphere right.

For the voice thing, it's because in the 90s, it was always the same guy who did the bad guy voices in the French versions of the Disney movies. So you kind of knew he was evil just by recognizing his voice.
perhaps because i grew up with the english version but i prefer the subtle innuendos that went over our heads as children but give the song so much more power when were older.

French girl here. Know that "I'm okay" doesn't always be translated by "Je suis bien", "je vais bien". In this case you would rather say "Je dis bien" !

That's why you cant use "Je suis bien" (I'm okay) anywhere else than in a sentence describing how you feel, physically or emotionally. "Je dis bien" would be "I"m saying well" or something like that but as I said, you can't do an exact translation.
Yeah I remember not understanding the words of this song when I was a child (I'm French btw), because they are difficult/adult words that you would not use as a 6 y-o. And re-watching the movie later, I was really surprised at how ambiguous the lyrics really are -you might not get it through the translation, but there are some sexual references in there!

This song actually is one the most 'adult' songs ever in the a disnet movie -- mostly because you've got Frollo who's doing all but *ahem* to this peice of cloth that was Esmeralda's and really being a very human and mortal man.
Certified Pancake Dealer even though they kinda use an French we don't often use so as a kid it was difficult for me to understand but when i grew up it became easier lol i think they kinda respected the "old French " and made it easier to understand
(sorry for bad english, i'm french) For the film they used the current French, apart from a few old words or expressions like "linceul" or "bacchanale" (I sought their definition on the internet). If there had been real old French, I myself would have understood nothing. French was different from one region to another at that time. They learned to read and write in Latin language to be sure to send legible letters, because two Frenchmen from a different region were not understood.
Yeah the book was written in 1800 and the translators had to remember this movie was for children ( tough it was not actually). They used words but more rare to make it look like it was ancient. Those words are understable by French people but never used ( maybe the high society does)
From what I understand from my classes, it's more of a guttural sound- almost as if it is coming from your throat and, like you said, vibrating it's way up..

J'ai toujours interpréter sa comme frollo qui réalise ce qu'il est sur le point de faire et qui est choqué et horrifié mais qui une fois qu'il se retourne est déterminé à aller jusqu'au bout même si il sait que c'est mal .
C'est précisément pour ça que j'adore cette chanson. On est capable d'identifier toutes les émotions que Frollo ressent. Les paroles sont magnifiques mais terrifiants aussi et la musique est vraiment merveilleuse!

Yeah, not just this, I generally find that French dubs are the best among European Disney dubs. Germans, Spanish, Italian, Greek, they all had bad voices... Maybe except the german Belle. French (France French, because Canadian French dubs sucked) somehow found voice actresses/actors who sound very similar to original English cast.

This version is my favorite. I think Hellfire/Infernale is the best solo by a Disney villain and is soooo underrated ! But what amuses me is that Frollo's voice has this kind of parisian accent people used to have. Jean Piat sounds like he could've hosted the French news in the 70s, 60s lmao.

I'm just here to appreciate the mindblowing effort that must have been put into translating this song into another language while keeping the rhyme scheme, the meter, and as much of the original meaning as possible (while surely taking a few intentional artistic deviations).

French translation always takes a lot of liberties compare to, for example, the french canadian one. Sometimes it's a shame (I can't stand Frozen in french. it's not bad, but half of the meanig is lost !). But sometimes, it's so good ! My favorite one is prabably what they made for Jack's Lament in Nightmare Before Christmas.

For the voice thing, it's because in the 90s, it was always the same guy who did the bad guy voices in the French versions of the Disney movies. So you kind of knew he was evil just by recognizing his voice.

That's why you cant use "Je suis bien" (I'm okay) anywhere else than in a sentence describing how you feel, physically or emotionally. "Je dis bien" would be "I"m saying well" or something like that but as I said, you can't do an exact translation.
Yeah I remember not understanding the words of this song when I was a child (I'm French btw), because they are difficult/adult words that you would not use as a 6 y-o. This song actually is one the most 'adult' songs ever in the a disnet movie -- mostly because you've got Frollo who's doing all but *ahem* to this peice of cloth that was Esmeralda's and really being a very human and mortal man.
