Facts About: "Be Prepared"
- "Be Prepared" was composed by Elton John and Tim Rice.
- "Be Prepared" was originally performed by Jeremy Irons, Cheech Marin, and Whoopi Goldberg, but Jim Cummings took over for Jeremy Irons when his voice gave out.
- "Be Prepared" continued what had become a Disney tradition in their newer movies at that time, where the villain had his or her own song in the film.
- Originally, the song was about Scar introducing the hyenas to the lionesses after he pronounced himself king and when the lionesses opposed him. This idea was scrapped in favor of the song in the film. It was called "Thanks to Me". A reprise of the song after Mufasa's death was also cut from the film, but is featured in the musical version.
- On the original soundtrack recording, Scar opens the song with a soliloquy:
"I never thought hyenas essential. They're crude and unspeakably plain. But maybe they've a glimmer of potential if allied to my vision and brain."
In the film this is cut and the song begins immediately. This was due to a plot adjustment. The soliloquy had Scar considering using the hyenas for his plot, but in the final version he had already used the hyenas in his plans before the song.

Artsy Survivor I can agree with some of that, the color palette looked a little off but I’m kinda color blind so who am I. I think they main reason I liked it was bc I couldn’t see the original in theaters and also it gave some background info for events in the original but I can see what you’re saying
@@ryanp5790 I think most of the songs were just worse renditions of the songs from the original, not to mention that this song Be Prepared got totally butchered. It wasn't even the same song, I get they didn't want to show Nazi imagery and Hyena's goose stepping but they also didn't have to and could have kept the song more like the old one and not completely screwed it.

Scar really was Disney's ultimate villain. He was so cold-blooded and evil. He killed his own big brother without a hint of regret and tried killing his own nephew.
His only moment of humanity (leoninity?) was that he couldn't kill Simba (a child) in cold blood. He ordered his minions to do it.
I mean, considering The Lion King is literally the story of Hamlet, it makes sense. Although there is a colder villain in the Disney lineup: Frollo.

This is why Scar is a great villain. He's manipulative and knows what the crowd wants. He's like a politician man who wants the poor people to stand by him and help him bring down the ruler so that he will be the king. If he's a king, he promised them to provide the poor people needs as long they follow his command.

And also because he is a dark mirror to Simba, with most of Scar's flaws being exaggerated versions of Simba's own.
Funny enough, the hyenas are goose walking in the movie in the verse leading up to "YOU WON'T GET A SNIFF WITHOUT ME!"

I like the fact that the hyenas singing backup are singing about a completely different goal than Scar. It helps show how shaky their alliance really is.

Fun Fact: Jeremy Irons's voice had given out after he shouted "You won't get a sniff without me!", and as such, he was unable to finish singing the song. So, with him out, Disney got Jim Cunnings to finish the final segment of "Be Prepared" while Jeremy Irons was out of it. Jim Cunnings delivered such a stellar performance and absolutely nailed Jeremy's Scar voice so well it was near impossible to tell the difference back then. We all thought it was just Jeremy Irons delivering a stellar performance as Scar, but no, it turns out Jim Cunnings knew how to nail Scar's voice as well. Unbelieveable.

@calebthetwig1593 I assume Jeffrey did multiple takes of the song and eventually his voice gave out and Jim had to step in to finish it. Either that of he was ill when it was time to record the rest of the song and he couldn't finish it.

Fun fact: The VA for Scar's voice went out during this song. After he shouted "You won't get a sniff without me!" Jim Cummings, the man who voiced Tigger, Pete the Cat...etc...he finished the song. :D

and it's because Irons had developed some vocal problems during the recording session, so Cummings was apparently good enough as a replacement that they didn't need any retakes.

The beauty of this song is that when you really think about it, since both Simba and Scar want to be king, Scar's number "Be Prepared" can be his interpretation/response of Simba's "I just can't wait to be King" but it focuses on his beliefs of what a king is and how they clash with Simba's, especially since this song is right after "I just can't wait to be king".
While Simba's song is what a child would interpret what it means to be king, focusing more on the idealistic utopian side of monarchy, Scar's song is how a dictator would interpret what it means to be king, focusing the more brutal and dystopian side of monarchy.
Yeah but context is truly king. Simba wants to be king after he grows up and presumably after his dad. Scar wants to kill his brother and nephew and makes a “nation” hungry Hyenas into a jackboot matching army to do it now.
Simba also grew up and realized being king doesn't just mean doing whatever you want. Scar never understood that.
Listening again as an adult, for the first time I realize that Simba doesn’t realize at all that he will be king only after dad is dead. And he’s pretty obnoxious about it too, “I’m brushing up on looking down” “everybody look left” “everybody look right” etc. The reality of monarchy is completely lost on a child. So “I can’t wait to be King” is almost exactly the same in intension as “Be Prepared”, and yet the mood completely contradicts.

Simba is at that point in childhood where he knows hes a child, and is irked at always taking orders from adults. He has an idealistic vision of adulthood and the kinghood that comes with it in his case, where he thinks he just always gets his own way and everyone will do what he says; which all the animals act out as he sings it (except Zazu, of course).
Scar is similar in that hes tired of playing second or even third or lower fiddle to his brother the king. He wants to be in charge for the power and glory he thinks it will get him. He already has all the resources he needs under Mufasa, just none of the fame and worship. Its not the frustration of immature childhood. Its the long festering indignity of living in his brother's shadow. Hence he wants to "respected, saluted, and seen for the wonder I am."
They both really want the same thing; to be the center of attention and be in charge. The difference is the motivations. Its childhood immaturity and impatience vs egotism, narcicism, jealousy, and plain old sibling rivalry. Also the obvious difference where Simba would normally simply have to wait to grow up to succeed the throne, Scar plots and carries out fratricide.
Hellfire: I’m the best villain song in Disney’s history.

There are a buttload of good ones. Ursula's "Poor Unfortunate Souls" is also amazing. And while Gaston's songs in "Beauty and the Beast" aren't quite as good, he does have two of them.
Sometimes a song actually makes a character. Before "Let it Go" was written for her, Elsa was originally "Frozen's" villain. They actually rewrote her character because of the song.

Jim Cummings (The voice of Ed) actually took over for a part in this because Scar's actors' voice broke in the last quarter of the song and Jim took over. Ed was prepared!

This song sums up Scar perfectly! Jeremy Irons is an amazing actor! You can just feel the emotions going through Scar. He’s terrifying, insane, he’s a genius, and he views himself as a god! You can FEEL his hunger for power in this song! You can tell he doesn’t care about these hyenas, they’re just pawns to him. He only cares about himself, and he thinks he deserves to be viewed as a god! He knows what he’s doing is evil, but he loves it! You can just feel his evil smile through this song, even though it’s just lyrics. It’s really one of the greatest songs Disney has ever made! Jeremy Irons needs more work! This is amazing!

Jeremy Irons is the ONLY Scar. EVER. He nailed the voice, specially that deep voice which fits scar as a villain without trying hard to make the voice sound evil. It's just so natural, like if Scar was real this was the exact voice you'd hear. Also, the sudden growls in this song which also doesn't seem like Irons was trying hard, but rather it seems to natural... like he's really feeling the character.

Shame too. "This is the thanks I get" as a song name fits nicely alongside the classic villain song names.
It's just too peppy and upbeat for me to ever consider it a villain song. The instruments and feel of the song is too pop-esque. Why does it sound happy? What're you trying to convey with making it sound joyful? He doesn't even sound all that pissed when he sings, just mildly annoyed.
Disney: "Oh DuDe, iT's GeTtIn' SeRiOuS nOw ThAt He'S mAd." Like, no, man. He doesn't sound evil, he sounds like he just got scammed out of 10 bucks.

When Jeremy Irons said "YOU WON'T GET A SNIFF WITHOUT ME!" Is where his voice gave out, saying that made his throat give in from the strain, so Jim Cummings was brought in for the rest of the song until the two final Be prepared moments, the laughter was Jim Cummings though.
I do wish Jeremy finished the rest of the song but Jim did a very good job in his place.

The last part of the song shows how good of a voice actor Jim Cummings is. Even when you know what to listen for and where to listen for it, it's *still* hard to tell it's not Jeremy Irons singing the last verse.
It still amazes me because their voices are so identical! But yeah it still throws me off sometimes even though I know Cummings filled in for Irons during the last verses of the song because he threw he voice out too hard when singing "You won't get a sniff without me!!" If you can imagine Tigger singing it, it makes it 10X better lol :)
