  • It's 2023, offering returns is a must if you're selling on eBay. Let me tell you why, and give you a trick that will drastically cut the number of returns you actually get! The trick is to require RMA before shipping labels are created for buyers seeking to return something. Check out the video to see how and why to enable this. Thanks for watching.

    Thanks for the RMA # aspect! Look, 11 months ago you released this video...and we're still learning from you! Gracias!

    Didn't know about the RMA #. Thanks for that.. Another advantage to offering returns is that it can protect you from negative feedback. Most likely Ebay would delete negative feedback if you communicate with the buyer that you will be happy to accept the return and offer to pay for the return label.

    If item is not as described customer can return. Antiques business norm is no returns.

    Thank you for this video! I started reselling in November and did not offer free returns until May 1 (I wanted to try it and see how it goes). From November thru April I only had one return but during the last 5 weeks I have had 5 returns and honestly not an increase in sales (but I know May starts to slow down). I turned free returns off yesterday mainly out of frustration--I had a buyer buy a pair of Levis 527 jeans for $22, I sent them priority padded flat rate for $8.47, He sent them back without ever even opening the package (said he decided on a different style). He slapped a label from eBay on the priority package that wasn't priority shipping. Somehow it arrived to me like that but I assume I am going to get penalized by the post office. After watching your video I have turned free returns back on but I put in the returns description the buyer covers the initial postage (I was fully refunding initial, return and price). Obviously if I make a mistake I will cover both but it seems kinda hard to absorb both postage when the buyer has a weak reason. Do you give back initial postage on returns?

    I'm a small business not amazon who makes billions of dollars and sell huge volume. I don't take return, I'm selling auto parts I'm not going to eat $20 $50 $80 shipping on both way just because de buyer changed his mind.

    Anything to have more in a search banner: BIN, coupon, sale, best offer, free shipping, free returns, I.E. $109.57 Extra 5% off with coupon Was: $154.32 29% off Top Rated Plus or Best Offer Free 4 day shipping Free returns :: is better than just Picture, title and $109.57
    The RMA option is great. As you said, can chat with the buyer. Since they opened a case, and if you are top rated, you have a lot of protections. If, and I usually do, catch the buyer up in a lie, send them the "partial refund policy" link and let them sit on that. If they dont respond, let alone dont ship and if they left bad feedback, it will drop off when the case closes regardless.
    As always, the complaints/returns, etc always come in 3s.

    I think it depends on what kind of merchandise you sell, I have been selling on eBay for so many years and I sell new mostly top name brands electronics, I don't accept any returns because open box electronics is worth at least 35% less than the new ones, I get returns once in awhile as (defective, or not as described) 90% of the time it's either the buyer didn't know how to use it or switched it with another unit but I am happy with average 1 return from 400 orders monthly

    • @justinresells

      I find having "buyer pays for returns" to be a deterrent to returns. I know this from advising people to return an item who do not understand how to start a return on eBay. You advise them to start a return from their buyer panel and way more times than not they don't follow through. The cost of paying to return the item stops them. By this time they have also said in messages "they just don't like the item". Which then voids any chance they had for a broken or NAD return.

    • @johndough23
      @johndough23 Рік тому +2

      I personally could careless about customer service at this stage in the process. That is what we pay eBay for. I did my job. Short of it breaking or truly being lost, I don't want the distraction to my day. We are Adults. You bought it, own it. eBay handles the foreign stuff perfectly, they should start doing the same with the domestic issues. if a Seller has alot of returns...dock them. If the customer would take a partial refund without needing to ship it back...eBay should handle that and PAY the freight not the seller. that's what happens on overseas issues.

      @@johndough23 I agree , if you are doing returns, and you select "buyer pays return shipping" it does a better job of deterring returns. It also puzzles me that some buyers dont know that if its not as described or something is wrong with it (like DOA), then they are protected. If i do offer returns i adjust my price by 10%. Out of the 3 (of 275 transactions) "not as described claims" by buyers, all 3 have been fraudulent and ive turned around and resold the item for the same price without issue. Ebay didnt do anything after reporting the buyers (which isnt a surprise). Its the same with amazon, uber, lyft, food delivery apps, they all side with the buyer even though the seller is a customer too.

    I just sell things I find cleaning my childhood basement. I havn't had returns allowed because I've dealt with people in past jobs & people are often dishonest about things. Like a sealed new dvd not having the dvd inside.
    But the point you made about people may be more inclined to buy my item if it has a return option vs not...

      The buyer liar syndrome was full force during quarantine, for me at least. My media sales alone were $30K for those 6 months (I just added all the media categories in the sales report $28,600 Mar to Sep '20). Also dealt with a lot of returns during then. So many liars. That's when I learned about the RMA from an ebay rep. I eventually put a cheap 4K camera pointing at my packing table. I would rotate the item - show sides, parts, etc that were not in the photos - and when a return started, I would debunk their claim and say I have video footage of the item. Do you want me to send a link so you can see for yourself?
      My Return Request rate dropped. Since then, I have sent 4 links. 3 times the buyer filed shipping claims for damage, as the video also showed they were packaged well.
      So, RMA and recording help a ton to reduce claims.

    If you are fortunate enough to get your item returned in its original condition-then yes you can resell for its original listing price. However, when your item is not returned in its original condition then you lose the ability to relist at its original price. So it’s not always a relisting win!

    • @justinresells
      @justinresells  7 місяців тому +2

      when I get an item returned not in its original condition I only give a 50% refund, which eBay allows you to do if you are a top rated seller

    • @leilanimr
      @leilanimr 7 місяців тому

      And if you don’t offer free returns or you’re not TRS then as I stated the seller loses.

    • @derekelliott6098
      @derekelliott6098 4 місяці тому

      @@justinresells I think a lot of sellers are missing the point of TRS and free returns. If, say 3 of 300 are returned a month (arbitrary average), the return cost, the loss of value, minimal added time; then you refund 50% (though you dont get FVF back or promoted paid) being able to keep some is better than nada - ebay started this maybe 2018 or so) is so insignificant to the 50% and the 10% FVF discount. So $10K gross ~$1K FVF $100 saved on FVF. Those hip to the math understand the point.
      Yes, it's the worst message there is. With RMA you can greatly inhibit the return. If it is, the grand total of loss is still way under the benefits of TRS.

    In the UK when a buyer makes a return eBay refund them the initial postage that they paid. I really want to offer free returns but paying for two lots of postage isn’t fair on the seller and takes quite a chunk out of the profit for that item. I’m not sure if it works this way in the US?

    • @justinresells
      @justinresells  Рік тому +1

      You have the option to refund the original shipping amount. I typically do not, unless the reason the buyer is returning an item is my fault, like it broke in transit or was not described in some way.

    to anyone watching this in 2024, After 15 yrs of operating on eBay, i dont accept returns. I have tested each model. You can only do partial refunds if the buyers chosen reason for return is "change my mind etc" - but all ebay buyers have learned to pick "does not fit" or "does not match listing description" which takes seller's ability away to do partial refund. So if you are selling $1000 items like me, then each transaction will hurt alot when buyer buyers, uses, and wants to return destroyed items for full refund".
