What a Good Drain Pump Looks Like

Is your drain pump bad? This is a drain pump out of a Whirlpool Dishwasher. They should look like this for a dishwasher or a washer.

Not always. That just shows the drain pump Impeller isn’t broken. Doesn’t mean that pump functions correctly when hooked up to power.

Should the impeller stop like that, after you spin it by hand.

Yep. The magnets in the motor make it do that. If it doesn’t do that, likely the shaft is broken and that means a new motor.
