Looking for appliances for a vacation home and Blake’s review was super helpful. We have an Electrolux all refrigerator at our house because we are veggie-voirs and veggies take up lots of room…. I was a little anxious to purchase a brand I wasn’t too familiar with but it has worked out great for us. We had struggled with an old GE side by side for over a decade. One of the best things we did was to change over to an all refrigerator and Electrolux made one of the right size for our finished kitchen.
At the same time we replaced the fridge we decided to go with under counter freezers. We love those too. They are by Marvel and have a single door with 3 pull out SS baskets. It is so much more convenient than a side by side with shelving! The only down side is the lack of an ice maker but that was an easy problem to solve…. Blake’s take on the Electrolux brand has matched with our experiences. I really appreciate the video. Thanks for sharing!

I'll trust this gentleman's experience about switches being the most common failure. I'm just surprised. A really long time ago, I worked at a company that made the contacts for electrical switches and they were usually designed to last for many, many thousands of on/offs before failing. Of course, back then you expected an appliance to last no less than 25 years without service. 😊

I think he was too generous about how well some of the appliances work. And one of the reasons washers get smelly is because people don’t use hot water. Two cents on LG washer vs. fridge: a VP named Cho in LG Washer division who retired in 2019 was a legend. He devoted his life in LG washing machine division for 20 yrs since graduating high-school. It is unheard for a non-graduate-school-grad , let alone non-college-grad to be a VP in LG. That shows how much of a legend he was, and how much devoted he was to washing machines.

I've had a Bosch dishwasher for 20 years and it finally started having cleaning issues. It was very expensive 20 years ago, but I definitely got my monies worth. I loved that machine, it was quite, cleaned great but never fully dried the dishes. It looked great inside and out and I never had a service call. My son in law works for LG and we used his family deal to get a top of the line LG dishwasher with all of the bells and whistles. We have had it about six months now and it works well. I believe it makes a bit more noise than the 20 yr. old Bosch. It still doesn't dry fully, but a bit better than my old Bosch. Which doesn't really even compare since it's 20 years latter in technology? You would think a dishwasher could completely dry the dishes by now. It has a lot of features, wifi, steam, etc. I'm a gadget guy and love utilizing these features. After seeing all of the reviews, I'm a bit worried about the future. I still l have hope this dishwasher will provide many years of service. I really appreciate Blakes opinion, because that is the most valuable to me.

I think we lucked out. We bought a bunch of appliances for our new house in 2012, everything was LG. The washer and dryer works still according to the people who live their now, and they kindly let us take the kitchen stuff back, and the stove and fridge still work with us today... That being said, I think it's because that was a couple years before the South Koreans went crazy with smart IOT garbage. But I will say LG had something going for them. It's a shame we probably won't ever buy from them again in terms of appliances because we've had a mostly positive experience with them.
The microwave that we bought for the new place did die within months however and that was meant to be a large fancy, almost commercial one. So I am not shocked now that I've seen this video. I think the dishwasher broke down with the new owners, so it lasted at least 5-7 years before kicking the bucket, which honestly doesn't sound bad but for appliances is kind of a fail.
We did end up buying similar washer from that era when we sold the new place. But the dryer and tenant's washer is from the 70's-90's and they still work like new. I think they're Maytag. The one's with coin slots. Those will probably outlive me to be quite honest so long as parts are available.

Great video! An appliance guy told me years ago:
    * Don't get a fridge with an in the door ice dispenser, and if you have any fridge with an ice maker, don't use it. Turn it off and buy your ice bagged from Costco and put it in your ice bin. Took his advice. Our GE fridge is 20 years old and not one service call. The appliance guy also told me ice makers are the number one reason for damaged hardwood floors, due to leaks. So if you have hardwood, all the more reason to turn off that ice maker.
    * Bosch is the best dishwasher. We have had two Bosch in 20 years. That's pretty good, I think.
    * Never use the self clean on your oven. It fries the electronics. I didn't listen on this one, and sure enough, fried the motherboard. When we bought a new oven, we decided to only clean by hand.. It's a pain. but it's been 12 years and counting. Not one service call.
He did not tell me about the microwave, though. So thank you for that advice.

The one thing that I have heard consistently from repair men and videos like this, is that you want to have your icemaker be in its natural environment: the freezer area. So you will basically need a side-by-side if you want an in-door icemaker. Otherwise, just get the one at the bottom that you need to scoop out the ice. Even better is if you have an icemaker as a separate appliance altogether if you have the space.

I have 9 Frigidaire appliances spread across 4 locations: 5 fridge/freezer combos and 4 large freezers that get about 20 below zero F. Three of those locations are vacation rental houses 1000 miles from our primary home. We standardized on Frigidaire because they "just work" and are easy to fix when they don't. Parts like shelving are easy enough to find, as are replacement ice makers. Vacation renters like to terrorize appliances, so this matters to us.
The stand up freezers are at our primary home, and hold a lot of food (we homesteaded for a while and I tend to freeze lots of stuff). They stay cold, and if you stick to the the analog models (no digital controls) you can replace thermostats in less time that it takes to empty the machine. The number one problem with those is leaving the door ajar. People think the compressor fails because it won't cool anymore, but real issue is the thermostats burn out from staying on too long (while the door is ajar). Just replace the therm and it's good until you do the dumb thing again.

Love my Speed Queen washer. I don't get why anyone would want a front-loader. Why not use gravity to your advantage with a top loader, vs have a washer w/ seals that collect mildew? Simple is best. Stainless steel drum won't break. I've got a SQ from 2012. No computer motherboards that can break.
Plus, I like being to control the amount of water I use, and am fine spending more on electricity. Set the price, let me pay for it. High Efficiency isn't always preferable.

I’ve been in business 29 years next month, and we share some of the same thoughts. I only recommend Bosch dishwashers and Speed Queen laundry equipment. The LG top loader washers are good too. I don’t see them for service until about the 10 year mark. The GE top load washer is another story all together. Their transmissions leak oil within the first year of service. And the newly mandated R600a is problematic to say the least. I’ve diagnosed about a dozen refrigerators using it, all less than a year old, with locked up compressors.

Thank you, Blake. Really appreciate your honest reviews. I can confirm for two appliances we have his recommendation: GE refrigerator 25 years old accept the light bulb issue, runs without problems. LG top load and dryer no issues. You should tell everyone to level it once in a while. If it is not leveled correctly it'll not turn on. We had that issue and called several technicians. One came to have a look at it, and told us that a part($150) needs to be replaced due to a disconnect behind the start button. I found the same recommendations on youtube, which was a reason to trust the diagnostic. Since the cost seemed high, my husband wanted to try it before ordering the part. The reason why I'm letting everyone know is that the other two technicians said the similar things "Oh, LG washers are having issues and are not reliable". My husband found no issues with the parts. Leveled it and low and behold, it was working by the slightest touch. Now, searching for our Dishwasher problem, I see that you are given your honest recommendations. Other reviews on this channel are true as well. Thank you so much! Love your channel.

In our previous Bosch diswasher when the racks started rusting, we called and had the "obligatory" long delay in getting to discuss the problem with someone. The CSR said we could purchase new racks for $500!!!! We said that we might as well purchase a new one. We did. In less than four years, the racks were rusting again. We called and the CSR said they would get back with us. Three months later, they said we could purchase new racks for half price, which ended up being about $100 (our price). We asked why on the previous model the CSR wanted to charge us $500? The CSR replied, because we charge back to the customer the cost of storage. The model you had was a certain age, and so we charge for the part, and the cost we incur for storing it. What a crock of crap.

Thank you so much! We moved into a house with a Bosch dishwasher and it didn't clean as well as the GE we left behind. But it was 15 years old. We switched out to a Miele and would never do that again -- the water funnel attached under the top tray comes off all the time and you REALLY have to use their detergent. Any other dishwashing soap left a terrible film and the stench opening up the dishwasher was sewer level! The salesman warned us it would be best to use their own detergent but I thought it was just sales. He didn't explain why. We found the sewage stench was a common thing with Miele. Their dishwasher pellets are industrial strength, I'm a little afraid of it to be honest but it finally doesn't stink and the glasses are very clean. I'm going to look at Bosch again though, thanks!

So glad to hear about Bosch; that's what I keep seeing online, and I have a friend who loves hers. That's our plan. For our needs, we basically found a particular French door/dual bottom freezer LG that works for us, but I'm leery about it now. :( I bought the Bravos Maytag washer/dryer, which again, suited my very specific needs (eg disability and short). I wish the washer had a buzzer when it finishes; a little plastic piece broke where you remove the detergent holder to empty water out, but it still works. I have trouble loading it so that it washes properly--comforters end up with a dry spot in the middle (top loading, impeller style). Once I actually watched it clean, I feel like too much laundry is sticking out of the water, using so little water. Our repairman gave us similar advice on brands and features on the appliances you mentioned. He did say Bosch DW parts were especially hard to get even before 2020. He recommended the Whirlpool. We actually love our KAaide, which is made by whirlpool. Less $$$ than the Bosch, too.
No matter what brand of DW one gets my best tip for preserving the plastic parts and dishes is to not use the heated dry cycle. Open and let the dishes air dry. I have replaced most of our plastic storage with glass or stainless steel containers. This also helps the drying process.

You are so right about not using the heated drying cycle. I open the door of my GE dishwasher & pull the racks out. I check for water pooling on top of cups & stuff. Within +/- an hour the dishes are dry & spot free. I even put large plastic items on the lower rack without damage by using this method.

7:04 I watched a video that explained that side by side refrigerators are the best if you want to purchase a fridge with an ice maker. The french door refrigerators have the most issues because the ice maker is located inside the refrigerator and it creates a lot of unnecessary mist and condensation. The mist can freeze on parts of the ice maker that allow it to work properly. I have a Samsung fridge and had this exact issue. They apparently have a class action lawsuit going on due to their faulty ice makers.

Thanks so much for for leading with the microwaves, I really appreciate the tip on opening the door while still in operation. I have the older Maytag (5100 AAB) 2001, Made in Cleveland, OH, it's a 1000 W. I compensate for cooking today's recommended cooking time by pressing the 30 sec. feature.

Little do they realize that they are over 20 years old. Then again that's when quality and durability were the best features.
