I did the rear brakes on my partners CX-5 after watching your video and managed to push the piston back with a 2 jaws puller and ball bearing to allow piston rotation. It worked perfectly! It was a small bearing but I had it sat on a washer of a similar diameter of the piston. A few things to watch for: 1 - the piston rubber tends to twist as the piston rotates so be careful not to damaged it. 2 - some aftermarket pads do not have grooves and 3 - the inner pad is a bitch to fit in 4 - use always brake cleaner instead WD-40 as it damages the rubber 5 - make sure your parking brake is down and you are on a flat surface with with a wheel chock on the front wheel

Do not compress the rear caliper in this way for model year 2016+ or you can damage the electric parking brake. Do a search to find how to disengage the parking brake in service model for the 2016+ models.
Yes, the models with the electronic parking brake motor do have a different procedure, thank you for the comment i will update my description and title and mention this.
Once you disconnect that 2 prong connection as seen on the vid before compression your fine. Have done this on 3 of my Mazdas ranging from 2016 to 2020

I'm having an issue where on occasion after this job (and a bleed) my E Brake light turns on on the dash. It doesn't feel like the brakes are activated or anything, and I've yanked and released the (mechanical handbrake). Ideas?

@@Burdbones don’t put them in backwards like I did - it’s a bit of a fiddle - helps if you have small fingers .

great video. If I can make one suggestion... I noticed you tightened the lug nuts in the 5 point star pattern, which is the correct way, but I think you need to mention what you're doing and why. I know a lot of backyard mechanics that just tighten them up around in a circle, not realizing they may not be getting the wheel installed uniformly

thank you🙂 no, u only have to bleed em if u introduce air into the system..like say u change a brake hose, open the bleeder valve and it gets air inside or replace a brake caliper..if u just replace ur brake pads then you won't have to
About to do this on my wife's CX5. One part of me like "aw shoot I need to buy another tool", while the other part of me is like "OH SNAP NEW TOOL TIME!" lol

Dito! Prior to watching this, I tried to compress the piston just like I've done dozens of times before, with a C clamp; however, this time it wasn't budging...I pulled up this video and saw that it needed a different type of tool. Fortunately, my local auto parts (NAPPA) had tool rentals so this extra step didn't cost me a dime :). Once I had the right tool the rest of the install went easy-peasy. Nice video!!! Saved me from buying a new caliper.
Great video, but the bolt needed to remove the rotor is M8 16x1.25 for my 2014. And to depress the caliper, if you use a simple oem tool, you need something to turn it while depressing it, otherwise it won’t give in. Took me 4 hours to figure this out. The entire process is only 5 hours total.

The bolt torque settings are useful for one-stop shopping on this job. Let's also include the 80 ft lbs wheel lug torque.
I watched your video on how to do the front brakes on a Honda civic a few years ago. Made the whole process super simple.
Now I've got a 2013 Mazda CX-5 that I need to do the rear brakes on. Gonna try to get to it this weekend.
So there's no need to disconnect the manual park brake? And there's no service mode (like on the newer ones)?

Good video. It's not recommended to use your torque wrench as a breaker bar.
That's not a torque wrench i use to loosen the wheels, thats a longer 1/2 inch. regular ratchet, but yea u definately dont wanna use a torque wrench as a breaker bar.
With my old truck i just used a C clamp to compress the brake. Can i do that with mazda 5 or does it have to spin to compress
For the rears they gotta spin compress, u can use pliers like needle nose pliers and open em to fit into the slots and rotate the piston in that way.
Brandon Donaghey depends on the year. 2016+ spinning the piston would destroy your brakes. You have to engage brake maintenance mode and a c-clamp is fine.
The torque specs are circa 68 to 81 ft lbs . (95-110Nm) in the workshop manual if I remember correctly.
Not for the rears, the rears in the manual are 38-48 ft lbs. torque spec for the rear caliper bracket bolt.

If you don't have a piston compression kit, you can actually use a vice grip to compress the piston back in.
Well explained. Unfortunately I did not pay attention to the "Without EPB Motor" caveat above and got into big trouble. Need to get towed to a mechanic.

@@backyardchevy328 Thanks. I did learn about the maintenance mode, and the steps to activate it, half way through my work (when the piston couldn't be pushed back). I activated it in that position, without reinstalling the old brake assembly back, how stupid!!. The EPB immediately pushed the piston all the way out, which also damaged the rubber boot and the fluid started leaking. Towed it to the shop and they are looking at it, will possibly need a new caliper. Thank you though.

do you need that special tool to compress? I have electronic parking brake in my 2016. I see your post about maintenance mode and compress straight. Can anything be used to compress? Dealer charged me over $600 to do the fronts (rotors, calipers, brake fluid flush, oil change and tire rotation). Back brakes are recommended but I'd like to save money and try this myself. I've done things like spark plugs, intakes, and other bolt ons.
After putting it on maintenance mode, u can use a c clamp, big pliers, etc.
@05:05 Did rear pads/rotors on a friend's car yesterday. I turned the pistons clockwise just enough to get the caliper to fit over the new pads that were set in place. I forgot to "align the grooves" per repair manual, so I'm not sure if the grooves are aligned or not. Friend is not reporting any issues, but we both heard pads slightly scraping against rotating rotor briefly when she test drove down the street. She said that went away when she came back down the street. Anyways, my question is what is the purpose of aligning the piston grooves? What would happen if the grooves were not aligned?
The nubs aligned into the grooves are so the parking brake tensions and holds in place

I haven’t worked on my brakes on the front of my C-X5 yet, what deference does it make if you have electric parking brake?
The front brakes wont make a difference, but on the rears it has an electric motor that can get damaged if its not put into maintenance mode before doing the brakes and on those the piston gets pushed straight in as well.
It would be very important to mention in the video a warning sign not to twist the pistons if you have an EPB brake as it will damage these

This might sound like a dumb question but the bolt used to remove the rotar, is that something was on the vehicle or would I need to go but a bolt to match the specs?
Theres no dumb questions🙂...its something ud have to buy, or u can tap the rotor off but its much better if u get a bolt to avoid damaging the threads on the studs.

No, for bleeding the brake u dont have to put it into maintenance mode, itll be the same as any other brake bleeding procedure

Yes itll be the same procedure except u want to put it into maintenance mode and instead of rotating piston in on the caliper..u push it straight in as u would the front caliper making sure to avoid rotating it

My Maz CX5 has the electronic handbrake, which I was able to release. But I didn't have a little 10mmx1.25 bolt and couldn't get the rotor off, even after hitting it several times with a mallet and hammer. So since the rotor wasn't all that bad, I just left it on for now. But Is there another trick to getting it off when it's ceased? thanks
Actually its an 8mm x 1.25 bolt..unfortunately i wrote that down wrong..theres a few ways but theres no better way to get it off if it has the threaded holes to buy 2 bolts from the hardware store or auto parts store will have em too..but yea hitting it in the center area where the hub is also works but u wanna be careful not to hit the studs..or u can put a long bolt through the caliper bracket with a nut on the inside and thread it on pushing against the rotor so it pushes the rotor off

I'm replacing rotors and pads in my cx-5, I disi the back first, and after lowering the car to move to the front I noticed the emergency brake has to be pulled up a little bit more. I haven't move the car yet because I'm about to start with the front wheels, is the emergency brake going to self adjust or do I need to do something?
Did u pump the pedal to bring the caliper in contact with the brake pads before pulling the parking brake? Once u pump the pedal a few times and bring caliper up to the pads the parking brake should get tighter.

The inside pad didnt want to go in at all. I made sure to compress the tab and have it in the proper place and still didnt want to go in as smooth as it did for you. I tried swearing at it and still no go. I am going to start drinking and hope it works, if not ill have to use a little force? Thanks for the videos. The fronts were done in 10 mins!
Like the brake pad doesnt wanna go into the bracket? What about if u start with installing the inner one first? Sometimes the hardware will bend down a lil on the opposite side making it hard to get the other in..Hopefully u were able to get it in...good luck

One question for you, 2015 cx-5 with the manual parking brake, you can't simply press the piston back in? Or do you absolutely have to screw it in?
Well that is how the brake calipers with the parking brake integrated have to be pressed back in unfortunately, they have to be rotated as their pressed in, i have a video which shows 3 different ways u can do it.

I think i did a typo on that one, it should be a 8mm x 1.25...no the bolt i got from my bolt stash
Did you remove the cap off the master cylinder or is that unnecessary?
Its been over 15yrs since I changed my own brake pads/rotors/drums. I was taught to take the cap off the master cylinder, do the mechanical work, then purge the brake lines.
But I'd rather not take any additional steps if I don't have to.

Well master cylinder resevoir has a lil vent hole so u dont really have to, but it is easier to push caliper piston back in with it off..you dont have to bleed the brakes if u dont introduce air in the system..but if u change a brake hose or a caliper or any brake component..in some cases people open the bleeder valve as they compress piston and if not done properly youll have to bleed the air out.

Well ceramics are quieter brakes with less brake dust which are the ones i used..semimetallics stop better and grab better in colder weather but they may squeal slightly when u brake cause of the metal in the material..but i did go with the ceramics

I forgot to put my Mazda CX-5 2016 GT in maintenance mode when i change the rotor and rear pads. The brakes are working good.
But now my EPB is not able to release...
Someone can help me with that?
To put ur mazda in maintenance mode..#1 u press the start button twice without starting it to go into ignition mode...release parking brake(one foot on brake as u press down on epb switch)..then release brake pedal..#2 press the gas pedal down fully and press the epb switch down at same time and hold...#3 press start button 3 times itll show a yellow parking brake with exclamation mark...u are now in maintenance mode....IMPORTANT.. when u compress piston u dont rotate it on these..just compress straight in like the fronts.....and to get off maintenance mode...#1 press start button twice without starting...press gas pedal down all the way press up on epb switch and hold...#2 now press start button 3 times and the light will turn off maintenance mode
if u redo it with the instructions it should retract the motor and operate normally afterwards, as long as it didnt get damaged...hope this helps

What maintenance mode does is turn the piston back slightly to make it easier to remove caliper that's the total purpose of it not needed
Not much emphasis on pad installation I've put many in on other cars but I had a pig of a job getting mine in they are the correct ones as I compared them etc plus checked with supplier but whether the top part goes in first or bottom ? Either end I'd put in the other would not go in etc tried doing it eveningly too

@@backyardchevy328 ah ok mate they're done now 9fdly the nearside went very well onoy difference I made was taking the anti rattle brackets out firva clean pads went in well ....it was just the one on drivers side outer facing me ....was a pig I didn't want to use a g clamp as the pads may crack so I 7sed a hand clamp just for a little persuasion....all good now cheers

No, that's only if u get air in the system, like if u replaced a brake caliper or a hose..in some cases if u open a bleeder valve and air got in

I have instructions on how to put it on maintenance mode on the pinned comment which should appear as the first comment, and when in maintenance mode u push it straight in...and this is only if u have electronic parking brake....what my video shows is the compressing piston without electronic parking brake model.

I don't have electronic brakes and I simply tried to push it back in with a 5" C clamp, almost impossible!
Do you have to put down the hand brake so you can change the brake pads?
Yes, since this type of caliper has Integrated parking brakes...the caliper will be pushing the brake pads against the rotor and will be hard to remove if u dont.

This is the ways it's done on every rear caliper electronic or not no car made needs any other procedure never remove the motor on any car I see electronics treated different and you dont need any other equipment than is used here backyard guys disagree I am a 46 year master tech who does brakes on every type of car never removed motors on any type I can retract pistons in under thirty seconds with this tool

@@ronpashley-crawford8375 yea release the handbrake before doing brakes, the parking brake is integrated in the brake caliper, so when ur done with ur brakes pump the brakes a few times so ur caliper presses against brakes and ur parking brake will operate as normal again

don't do this on the 2016. You don't turn the cylinder. Also you have to put it in maintenance mode. Costing me a grand not doing this.
Certain 2016 models dont have the electronic parking brakes but yea for the electronic parking brake ones i do have instructions on the pinned comment reply...that really sucks though, im sorry to hear that.
Why didn't you replace the brake pad guides? Ya know, those 2 chrome clips that allow the brake pads to slide in and out. You added grease to the old ones. That's just stupid, especially when new pads come with the new slides 😂😂😂
That's not the proper jacking point for that jack.
Wrong tip. You should never, ever mix slider pin grease, the one you are using has max heat rating of 200F. Wipe completely and apply sil glide which has boiling point of 400F. Don't get premature wear listening to people on UA-cam
The permatex one i use has a temp rating of 400F as well
