- A quick video discussing Mazda CX-5 electronic parking brakes (EPB) and the procedure to put the system into service mode. It is important that you put these systems into service mode prior to doing any work on the rear brakes. If you compress the rear brake caliper pistons without doing this, you can damage the calipers and the EPB motors.
I know this is an old video, but I have to let you know you made this process much easier. Thank you immensely.
You're welcome!
You're a lifesaver. Was working on my 2018 Mazda 3 and this was the trick i needed to get that blasted piston compressed. There is no telling how many times I rotated that damn thing and it was not compressing.
Did u have a problem after u were done w the epb light because the piston is not in the "home" position ?
Thank you! Straight to the point! Saw a couple of other videos and too much talking!!! Thanks again.
Question, what can happen if the rear piston is turned when retracting it (while in service mode). I helped a friend do his brakes and saw the notches in the piston so I figured it needed to be spun. I use a tool similar to what is in the video, (but with the adapter with pins that fit into the slots) and I slowly compressed the piston, but I could also feel the motor turning (so I went extra slow). Everything seems to be operating normally as far as the epb and rear brakes in general, but my friend is a little paranoid after reading you're not supposed to spin the piston.
I did the same thing not knowing better. Only after the fact did I come across this video. All seems to be working well. What now???😮
I have no idea how I got into service mode, could be cause I just installed a new battery; but this was helpful to fix it! Thank you!
Perfect tutorial before I do a spring cleanup on our 2018 cx5. Thank you
This helped me change the rear brakes in my 2017 Mazda 6 Touring vehicle. Awesome video. Thanks a ton.
thanks I love my Mazda and your tutorial was on spot
On a 2020, the instructions worked but the parking brake icon didn't show when in service mode like in the video. I did hear the parking brake motors actuate.
Great video, well done and very helpful . Thanks
Super.. The video helped a lot.. Thanks... Good day
Thank you for your video..
I just finished brake job for
2018 cx5 my daughter’s car
I was struggling on caliper compressor ...
Now I am 100% confident with your video!
Thanks! I’m doing my parents this weekend and wasn’t sure about the electric parking brake
Nice and clean procedure, nicely explained and nothing's missing. Thanks!
Thank you for doing this video. It doesn’t get any more straightforward. Much appreciated!
Perfect! DO not rotate the piston. just compress it after you put the EPB in the service mode.
Oh man, saved me a world of trouble. Your tutorial is awesome, crystal clear. Thanks a bunch!
Glad you found the video helpful! Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment!
I just finished the install of new rear brake pads on my 2017 Mazda CX-5. I put it in service mode when I started, but when I finished, I couldn't get it out of the service mode. I followed the steps exactly. The car turns on and I can drive it just fine. Brakes work and no longer squeak. What am I missing? Did I install something incorrectly and that's why it's stuck in service mode?
Hiii, I have the same issue here.
Did you manage to get it solved?
you can push the piston in by sticking a screw driver between the outer pad and caliper housing
Have this exact car and taking it out of service mode did not work for me. I repeated the steps till I heard the pistons doing their thing, but the light persisted to stay on. So, I ended up doing everything listed but only pushing the Start button twice and that finally got me out of service mode.
Bro ..... GREAT VIDEO.
Thank you! This was a very well done and clear video. It worked like a charm on my 2007 Mazda3 Touring 2.5.
Much better than the video of the guy that took 41 minutes making a similar video…
I try to be quick and to the point when I need to be. Try to switch things up between quick videos and longer, more detailed ones. No need to share my life story, or talk about my sponsors (I don’t have any) 😂. Glad you liked the video!
Just change my rear brakes. Did all this correctly also take it out but somehow the P light is on and brake lighting flashing
Thank you 😊 Great video!
Thanks for an easy to follow, straight to the point video. I've watched half a dozen on how to engage the EPB service mode, and they were all confusing/wordy/too long!
Quick question, do you pump your brakes after reinstalling everything , before or after resetting epb procedure? Thx
I also have this same question.
Send this video to Midas. Told me the parking brake was giving them trouble…. Hopefully they didn’t fuck up the brake motor
For anyone wondering this IS also the procedure for a manual gearbox with the E-Brake. Enjoy happy motoring.
I have a '16 Mazda6 Sport. This electric e-brake was a bear. Wish I saw this before tackling this.
SHORT AND SWEET ,THANKS YOU
Hats off to you for this helpful tutorial! I appreciate your effort and know how!
I have brake problem it flashing brake light and give 5min ride it well smoke from rear brake pad wired. how can fix that!
Great description - thanks! What should I do if I rotated the rear caliper out of the 12 and 6 o'clock position? Is there a way of determining which notch should be at 12 and 6? Maybe it does not matter.
Once you’re in service mode, you can rotate the piston back so one pair of the notches is oriented at 12 and 6 o’clock.
How to replace Elect. park brake actuator CX-5. Is there a video to watch.
I've only been able to find the actuators as part of the brake caliper assembly, so far.
👍🏾 Great instruction.
Im stuck in maintenance mode. I messed up a piston. Now the other wheel is locked. Help please.
So what happens if you spin the piston
very curious
Thank you for this!
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for this vid
Tolong saya ganti kampas dan saya membuka motornya dari kalipernya sebelum mengepres lalu setelah pemasangan DTC EPB nya nyala terus sebelah kiri apa yang salah dan bagaimana memperbaiki nya agar mode service tidak menyala terus
I have a 2018
Mazda 3 with a manual transmission is the same to put it in service mode
thanks so much for your education 🎉
all my parking brakes are on they will not release so messed up
What if someone pulls pos battery cable Yeah To many Chiefs
Can I use this tutorial for my 2016 Mazda Cx-5 rear breaks?
Awesome job at explaining the procedures for switching to Parking Brake Service Mode and Back!
Glad it was helpful!
getting parking brake malfunction after changing pads and following this.. any ideas?
Very helpful thank you
I attempted to do the rear brakes on my 2017 CX5 without knowing about needing to be put into maintenance mode, big disaster! I ended up finding out about the procedure after the fact. I got the rear pads on, but they were dragging badly on the right rear. Thought I had messed up the EPB, so I replaced it, but unfortunately I’m still getting intermittent dragging on the right rear. When I apply the EPB now, it malfunctions. I’m at a loss here.
Have you tried putting the vehicle back into maintenance mode, compressing the pistons back into the calipers, and taking the vehicle out of service mode?
@@AKJeeper I took it to a mechanic, he put the car on his scanner, reset the EPB and put a new EPB electric motor on it. But I still have intermittent dragging. Costing $$$$
open question... is it the same for 2017 Mazda 6 , as in no need to rotate the piston while in maintenance mode . compress piston straight in . appreciate anyone's insight on mazda 6 2017 ? thanks
I’m fairly certain that a 2017 Mazda 6 with the electronic parking brake will be the same as this CX-5. Try to push the piston in without rotating the piston. Stop if you come across a lot of resistance doing this. Screw-type pistons won’t compress without turning them, and will resist an attempt to push it in if the piston is not rotated.
I got a 2017 CX-5 I’m doing the back brakes after I put it in maintenance mode so I need to turn the piston or is it like all the other pistons I just compress it with a old brake pad and C clamp
The piston just compresses in (do not twist it). I don't recommend a c-clamp as it might put undue stress on the parking brake motor attached to the back side of the brake caliper. The tool I used in the video is more appropriate for this application.
Sir I have Mazda cx 9 2020. Few days before I have changed my rear break pad a local automobile. After I changed the break pad the electronic parking break light comes on and goes out of sudden. What could be the issue?
It would probably be best to scan the vehicle with a scan tool capable of accessing the EPB module to see if there are any fault codes stored.
GREAT tutorial!
I just completed all 4 pads on my 2016 1/2 CX5 and it went flawless thanks to you!!!!
Will work also for 2015 Mazda CX-5?
Do you pump the brakes before trying to exit service mode to seat the pads?
I personally wait until after exiting service mode to pump the brakes. At the end of the day, I don’t think it matters either way.
When you press the brake pedal or depress the gas
I looked everywhere to find where the notches were supposed to be " 12 & 6" on the piston. I had rotated piston before learning about maintenance mode. Everything went back together fine, except i couldn't get the epb light to turn off. Thank u so much
You are the fucking man !!!! Thanks
I just did this job. I reactivate the electronic brake Nd I can then run for Boy -0 seconds then shut off. I release the gas pedal and electronic brake button but the red “BRAKE” light stays blinking. I did the disconnect electronic brakes then reconnect sequence again and same thing
I did all this but the maintenance mode (P!) Light stays on but everything works as expected... Any ideas how to get the light to go out? Thanks in advance.
My caliper was seized and it had broken parts on the inside. This video definitely looks legit but mine is a special case i guess.
Great video. One question. Do you have to put the rear brakes in service mode to bleed them?
Bleed the brakes as you normally would 🙂 Service mode is only for when you remove the caliper from the vehicle, like when replacing pads. Hope this helps!
Solid video thank you. I stepped into an aborted brake job (inexperienced diyer) pistons were all the way out. Saved them some cash and a dealer visit
Thanks for the great vid, do you know if you need to be in service mode to bleed the breaks? or can it be done like a normal bleed?
Bleed as usual. Service mode is only for when you are removing the caliper and replacing the brake pads.
Well I ended up finding this video a tad too late. I put the car in service mode the second my friend unplugged the caliper from the motor. We stopped got the caliper tool and thought we would be okay except he suggested I take it out of service mode and put it back into service mode. The caliper was connected this time and it pushed it all the way out and indicated a braking failure on the dash. Lesson learned, I replaced both calipers on the rear of the car. However, while the car was in braking failure I was not able to get it back in service mode. They were replaced while out of service mode I believe. With everything replaced on the car, I'm at a loss of what to do in order for the car to reset the braking system. It's in failure on the dash lights. Do I need to unplug calipers from motors first and get into service mode? I don't want to buy new calipers again. Any help would be appreciated.
Wow, I have not come across that situation before. The first thing I would do is try to reset the brake system with a capable scan tool. If the system will reset, try putting it into service mode (with the brakes assembled and on the vehicle), then take it out of service mode.
When your original calipers were plugged back in, and service mode was triggered, were the brake calipers and pads installed on the vehicle? Or were they already off of the vehicle?
Hello did you find out a solution to this problem? I seem to have done the same exact thing. Do I need to buy new calipers?
@@EXPCRUMSYwhat was your solution?
Super clear and informative. Good job !!!
Thank you!
Seems a bit '' complicated ''. Guess i will have to watch and watch again. Until I get the sequence. Thank you.
Nice video. Short and sweet right to the point.
Thank you
Just saved 350 dollars just for labour. Saved that money to buy new rotors and pads on all 4 wheels. Thanks Sir. ✌️👍🤜🤛
OK I think I almost got it but I just want to make sure, You said push and hold the gas pedal then push and hold the parking brake switch while you push the ignition button three times. It didn't look like it it was held down unless you have three arms right? So only push the parking brake once then push the ignition switch three times. Then again why your hand had a glove on when you push the parking break then a hand without a glove pushed the ignition switch?
Sorry I just happened to notice that.
joe valenzuela - With the ignition in the “on” position (warning lights on in the dash), push and hold the gas pedal to the floor. While holding the gas pedal down, push and hold the parking brake switch down, then push the ignition button 3 times. It takes two hands (I usually use my right hand on the parking brake switch, left hand on the ignition). In the video, my camera was in the way of my assistant sitting in the driver’s seat, so I pushed the ignition switch while he held down the parking brake switch and gas pedal. I hope this clears things up for you!
@@AKJeeper It worked very well. I was lucky enough this video shows up just moments before while I'm setting everything up. Thank You
After the fix brake pads , before activevate parking mode on position before brake pedal need to press or pump ?
thank you, thank you, thank you. this vid was well put together and made things so much easier. I got it first time around. big up yourself brother.
One thing the video did not show was what to do with the RFID key? Should it be in the vehicle? Kept away so the car won't start? Sure wish I knew.
The key needs to be in the vehicle so that the ignition can be cycled to where the lights come on in the dash as shown in the video. The car will not start if the sequence shown in the video is followed.
Excellent...thanks!
Great job, very well said. Easy to follow. Unlike our president
BANG,BANG THANK YOU MAN!!!!!!
Thanks for posting this video, my brakes started vibrating after a hard braking I had to do. I think the rotors got warped as per mechanic and thanks to you!!!! now I can do it on my own. BY THE WAY MY CAR IS A MAZDA 3 2017 6 SPEED MANUAL AND THIS STEPS DO WORK ON IT!!!!!!
Thanks...
I've changed a lot of brakes on my older vehicles over the years but never heard of this operation before. I couldn't figure out why my caliper was so tight. thanks for sharing.
Glad to help! I love that I can share my knowledge on UA-cam.
I didn't know about the servide mode before taking the pads out and now im screwed 😐
@@Addi_Teacha509 Sorry to hear that. But now that you have the pads out, won't the electronic release still work?
I have tried to do this but the service parking light does not turn on, is this a sign to panic?
Just fix my daughter's car today 2/23/21 thank you for this helpfull video.. you are awesome!👍
Thanks for sharing this practical video..Changed my cx 5 rear brake flawlessly..saved me from buying piston compression tool..
Excellent thank you best tutorial I’ve seen on this works a treat.
I have referred to this video like 3 times already in owning this car thanks for the video man
Hello. Good video. But Before watching this video, I removed the caliper and hung it by the spring. Then I activated the service mode. the piston stepped forward to its extreme point and now I can’t move piston back. I tried to just push and rotate with push, but without success. I tried to remove the service mode, but the motor is working, and the piston does not move. Have you encountered such a problem? have any ideas?
There’s a warning on All data about the CX-5’s and rear brake pad maintenance which I learned the hard way. You should never rotate the piston, just push it straight in, if you rotate it you could damage the inner components on caliper. As for your situation of the piston pushed out to extreme, the motor will still work and try to retract it, but being that the piston is so far out it won’t be able to pull it back. I’ve taken the motor off the caliper before to somehow line both together so they’ll catch but it’s really difficult.
Hey man, same thing happened to me. Any luck on getting it back in?
Dominic East Hi man, I replaced calliper completely and reset error using OBD2 scanner. Old calliper always showed error. I gave up.
@@dominiceast8114 Hey Dominic, I think the same thing has happened to me. Did you have any luck getting this resolved?
@@CountBeans hi Jody. I had to take it to the dealership, cost me a few hundred bucks :(. They had to completely replace the caliper and reset the CPU
best instuctions
Thank you for the video 😎👍🏼 question, this procedure will work on CX-5 2016?
I believe it should, assuming it has the electronic parking brake.
@@AKJeeper that’s correct 👍🏼
This information is invaluable. Thank you.
Thank you, I tought i had to call a tow but you saved my day!!
Nailed it my man! Thank you so much! Don't understand why people could dislike this video, but screw the haters!
I had no idea. I am getting ready to do mine for the first time and had no clue about this. Awesome video, thank you
Thank you
Thank you for this video. I just did all my brakes on the 2017 Mazda 3 and I thought I messed up the motor for the electronic brake
I don’t have that tool and can’t seem to compress it at all in service mode and all that good stuff
What are you using to push the piston back into the caliper? They aren’t exactly that easy to push in without the tool. Can’t really use a different tool like a c-clamp because the EPB motor is in the way.
@@AKJeeper I went and bought a tool just now but the piston is so far out that the tool won’t fit between the caliper and the piston. It’s a 2017 mazda3
does anyone know the torque specs on this model. Both rotor and caliper bolts?
Excellent job. In 3 minutes I went from pre-warned and hesitant to understanding this Mazda's electronic maze and game cheating design. thanks for breaking the enigma code!
I had one today...got it pushed back both sides no problem...but the one wouldnt actuate properly afterward.
Are you getting any warning lights after you exit service mode? If you activate the parking brake, can you hear the motor working on the caliper?
@@AKJeeper yes. The motor worked. The piston would just simply spin though. Not in or out.(I shorted it)
@@jacobz.carson803 The inner brake pad has a locating peg which needs to line up with the notch in the piston. This locks the piston in place (when the caliper is installed on the vehicle) so that it won’t spin. The motor will then move the piston in and out. It is imperative that the pads are installed in the caliper, and the caliper reinstalled on the vehicle before exiting service mode.
@@AKJeeper I get that it was just I feel like an oddball thing that happened the customer just ended up needing a new caliper I literally followed the book to the T for some reason I don't know why the Piston got locked after service mode was disengaged and the parking brake was engaged my only clue as to what was wrong with the fact that the Piston hadn't moved it all even though parking brake was engaged
Does this protocol also apply to 2019 CX5 AWD?
What are the torque values for the caliper sidepins?
Do you enable maintenance before or after jacking the vehicle?
Thanks!
Yes, this should be the same procedure for a 2019. Torque for the caliper bolts 17-22 ft/lbs. I usually wait until the vehicle is off the ground and the wheel is off before putting it into maintenance mode, but you can do that prior to all of that, if you'd like.
Thanks for the video very good viewing to repair breaks with epb
Working on my brothers 18 cx5. So what "bad" happens if you don't put the vehicle in service mode and remove the caliper and then the person that owns the car finds out that it should be in service mode and does it while the caliper is apart?
Was the caliper disconnected electrically from the vehicle when it was put into service mode? And had anyone tried retracting the caliper pistons beforehand?
Excellent step by step video .
Thank you from a Brake tech in Australia!
I just wanted to give a big thank you! For posting this information on UA-cam, just did my brakes today, and did not know about the e-brake service mode 👍
Do you pump brake pedal several times to set pistons close pads before taking system out of service mode?
No - the EPB system winds the pistons out during the calibration sequence which occurs when you take the system out of service mode. When I do brake work on cars with EPBs, I’ll take the system out of service mode before touching the brake pedal.
