I was setting up my 7800X3D yesterday while waiting on other parts. Had enough to bench it to check for faults. Threw on a low profile Scythe Shuriken 3 with the crappy paste that came with it and it sat happily at 37°C for about an hour while I played with settings and installed stuff. Was a pleasant surprise. I'll repurpose the old Noctua Chunker until they release the new one later this year. Good stuff.

@@tscheitea7735 I guess it depends on the climate, but 60c on a chunky twin tower cooler does seem a little high. Kinda reminds me of the old 3000 series issue where the chips where constantly boosting while idle. A quick tweak to the control panel power setting profile so that it only ever maxed to 99% fixed that. My old 3900X used to idle at around 48-54. After the tweak it went down to 38-41. • @thanatoast4

@@IIHydraII Cant speak for BFV or BF1, but in Apex's case, it preloads maps and assets for the game mode you have selected, and also does some shader compilation. Absolutely eats your CPU alive trying to do it as fast as possible. In my experience, Apex's preload/shader comp routine is literally the highest load my CPU ever sees outside of synthetic benchmarks and stress tests.
FPS limits probably wont help, but if you still want to, you can do so via launch options in steam (+fps_max x). Could also be that fast modern SSD's enable that process to run significantly faster without getting bottlenecked by drive access.

Because suddenly my temps were about 10 degrees higher in each area; idle, gaming. in Last of Us, the pc would shut down during building shadders because temp would go over 90. Other than this, temps were high but still 'usable'... Was a nice experiment though.

I have a 7900x3d and it was running mid 70s on the hotspot using a Noctua redux U12S. That cooler was just a stand in while waiting on a gpu water block to swap over to a custom loop. Now it is usually hitting low 60s on hotspot. I was also running r20 with an ambient of about 24c. In games usually see mid 50s. It's been great! I bought an extra F120P for a push/pull configuration. It sits in the low 40s for idle and doesn't go over 70 C in Starfield or any other game I play. Stays around 25% utilization in game but goes up during loading of course. Even then, it usually hangs around the mid 50s. That might seem high for such low usage, but that's because the boost is running so high. It will throttle down the boost if it hits a higher usage to avoid thermal throttling.
Also, there is a slight temp decrease from running the non-RGB version. The RGB fans don't seem to be as well tuned as the non-RGB versions. Plus, there are two variants of the NZXT non-RGB fans now. The F120Q for airflow(intake and exhaust). And the F120P for static pressure(Heatsinks and radiators).

As for cooling, I had to get a new cooler anyway so even if it really does not need it, an arctic liquid freezer 420 it is, I personally expect to be using that one for future upgrades as well.
Besides, it really doesn't hurt to have something that only needs to run at low pump / fan speeds.
As for scientific workloads on an x3d, they are actually used for that. Certain algorithms just need loads of cache. Are they thermally significant for the cpu, probably not but still it is an actual use case.

86C according to which sensor? Is this "CPU (Ttcl/Tdie)" in HWINFO or "CPU CCD1 (Tdie)" or "CPU Die (average)"? These modern Ryzen CPUs have a ton of temperature sensors inside and they all show different temperatures. It looks to me that Ryzen Master's temperature matches the "CPU Die (average)" at least on my 7950X3D, and also the "Thermal limit" percentage seems to follow that. And that temperature is always lower than "CPU (Tctl/Tdie)" which can even spike above 89C.

From my experience, when people run PBO CO it's mostly to reduce heat output so they can run lower fan speeds for less noise. If anything, they're expecting to lose a bit of performance rather than gain anything but the performance loss is often so marginal it doesn't matter, while the temps/noise are usually improved a fair bit. 7000 series made this especially prevalent for ITX builds because I guess no one at AMD ever stopped to think about how a 95 C target would affect noise levels.

    • @colesym84

You mention negative values on CO _increasing_ temperature, but my experience with the 5800X3D is that negative CO values correlate with a _decrease_ in cpu temp. It’s also the only way I can get 4450 on all-core workloads. I’m using a 280 liquid AIO (Arctic LF II).
Should negative CO values increase or decrease temps? Did something change from 5000-7000 series?

    • @Xelnah

Decrease temps by decreasing voltage for a given clock speed

    • @faithful2008
      @faithful2008 Рік тому

Off course it's increase the temperature on multi cores scenarios, did u just watch his graph table with prism vs aio while he apply pbo??
Aio being able to run the test with -20 pbo while the prism fail? prism fail because the heat was increased ???
Well he just proved it to you the fact that with negative pbo in multicore scenarios like cinebench r23 all cores will boost at much higher frequency and generate more heat, that's why he say the prism fail the test because of the temp.
Negative CO values correlate with a decrease in cpu temp only for a given cock speed! ,or for the same clock speed!, not when the given clock for all cores are going to boosting at much higher frequency,in mullticore cinebench scenarios!
Did something change from 5000-7000 series?
Nothing change it's just like before, only that the fact that you don't understood how pbo working lol, when you use -20 to -30 negative CO what's happen is that the all the cores will boost at more higher frequency in multicore scenarios and generate more heats.
So in multicore benchmark you will see a increase of your temperature because all your cores will boost at much higher frequency than without pbo.
Yes you see decrease in temperature but only at at idle! when is the same given speed at idle!, or when browse net or watching movies or youtube or when you using applications or games that do not use all cores but just few cores ...
At stock frequency my 7800x3d with pbo off, all core boost to 4825 Mhz in multicore, and on single core/ any of the single core hit the 5050 Mhz in hwinfo while browse net or youtube. While with negative -30 on pbo all my core boost will boost to max 5050 Mhz, / and the single core frequency is the same as stock 5050 Mhz because is fixed locked by amd. And yes i can confirm that at 5050Mhz in all cores you get more heat that at on 4825 Mhz stock multicore, not by much if you are on the aio push pull only +3+5C , but on prism you get fail:D
Also is true what he say that is not worth to spend 3 days by tuning you pbo curve per any single core with prime 95 /aida 64 sha3 etc , cause the difference you get in multicore is to little, and on single core the diffrence is 0 gain, cause max freq on single core is the same as stock! cause is fixed on x3d by amd.
In cinebech r23 i'm getting 18460 points at stock vs 18820 points with -30 on pbo ( all cores boosting at 5050 Mhz vs 4825 Mhz at stock multicore, ...so not such a big difference.........., like he said this chip is being all ready tuned for gaming and do not benefit for more single higher clock frequency.

    • @Omizuke
      @Omizuke Місяць тому

@@sam-gz1ql Oh, I made another comment on this vid a month later, after I got it, with a bit of development.
Thing is, I never tried the Prism, I really liked it. how it looks, so I order a new/open box. But there was some problems or something at post office and was gonna take longer than expected. And a tower cooler I had on Amazon watch was on sale so I got that, it was already cheap, Dual 120mm PWM Fans, was gonna use whichever came first. The Raijintek won. I think the Prism would've worked as well. But there are other factors.
My case is the Fractal Pop Air, which came with 3 fans, and is well ventilated, I set the 7800X3D with a PPT of 105, which was unnessesary, I'v never seen it getting anywhere near that. Not even 88W so I could've set for that. My Curve Optimizer is a -39. Don't know if that's the average or I have a good bin. But I haven't had any problems with it. I've run a number of benchmarks and never throttled. Oh also I have a temp limit of 80c. So, PBO with PPT 105W, Curve Optimizer of -39 and temp limit to 80c. And gaming is not a problem because I'm already limited with my GPU, having a RTX 3060 ti.
Also, my room is hot, so the ambient temperature is on the high side. 90f (32c) is an average, with 80f (27c) been considered a "cool" day. And summers can get really hot. Also, my PC is on top the desktop, With only a slightly higher dresser on the side, to be safe it doesn't fall off, 7 inch (bout 17cm) from the back wall, and to it's left, there's not much, the monitor, keyboard and space, then the window, at 43 inches (108cm) window is always open, unless it's raining. So although hot, I have optimal ventilation. Like in buildzoid case.
I don't know how well it would work if you build like a HTPC, and put it on a poor ventilated TV center hole, it might be different. Or if you have AC and don't have to worry about ambient. There's also the dust factor on a box. I, eventually change the fans, adding 2 140 at the front intake running at performance, moved the 2 120 from the front to the top, running silent, the back is balance, or performance, cant remember, I know it's not silent. The purpose is that if your negative pressure is more than what the intake fans supply, air sill start entering through all places, bringing dust with it. When the positive pressure is higher, air goes out through the exhaust fans but some will get push out the case itself. The Fractal Pop has a LOT of holes. The case blowing helps prevent dust from entering through those holes. While the intakes been the arbiters of from where the air gets in, the front mesh gets really dusty on a weekly basis, you can see the 2 circles of dust where the fans are. Easier to clean, and the PC inside has remain clean.
I have seem some good low profile coolers that perform well, and better than how the Prism perform. And although in most cases I believe it will be enough. Unless you are somehow maxing our CPU at all times. But it should be enough, as long as you don't have the worst conditions for where you locate the PC.
I am still considering trying the Prism cooler. But life has been crazy lately. I'd like to log my temps for a week or more of usual use, not benchmarks, but daily activities and gaming. Then try the Prism. Because I really like the Prism look, and that feature that change color with temps. The other coolers I like are the ones that have temp monitor. But most of them shipped to my location at the time of building. And the one that did were too expensive.
If you do build you low profile PC let me know if it works well. I'm building a 2nd later this year, will go with the same CPU, but considering a mATX or even mini ITX.

I use a DeepCool AK620 with my 7800X3D in a Fractal North case and an undervolted RX6800XT.

Oh my... 77°C on full load max in all tests? My die is always around ~83°C with a CO of -39 and a 420-AIO. Also was looking for a 7800x3D voltage "guide" but didn't found any quality one yet.

I am planning to upgrade from i7 9700k. Using classic evo 212 right now. Fan is 10yo but running like a champ. I need to do a little research to check if its compatible with am5 or i need to get an extra bracket. Its got 4 copper pipes and 2 120 fans, hopefully it will work 😂

I did the same chip upgrade, 7800x3d is 11% usage where the 9700k was 100%. This is with a 4090 at 4k. You probably don’t need a better cooler because it just won’t be challenged by games.

      Buys a $450 cpu and likely a $300+ motherboard and can't spend $30 on a new cooler....

@@username8644 I can spend a way more then $30 on a new cooler or aio))) It has nothing to do with money, I just really hate throwing away good functioning device (or any other electronics i own) that gets job done to garbage only because it is not brand new.

So it’s safe to run just 1 cpu cable to mobo instead of 2?

Absolutely. There's never an instance where it's not safe as well, it could just mean your cpu won't get enough power potentially. A single 8-pin cpu cable is rated for 336 watts btw. Most CPUs are not using more than 336 watts.
