    This was an extremely well explained (esp. on Hall effect, easy to understand!) and contextualized review of HE boards. It paints the right picture of what’s on the market when you come from an enthusiast side.
    It might have been fun to also have seen a big retail brand in between to further contextualize expectations.
    A lot of respect for the time and effort put into this. 🎉

      I would like RTS games get testest with that keyboard! You're spamming modifiers a lot with shift and ctrl. Sometimes its hard to get them going well enough buy releasing the keys if you're spamming 200-250apm constantly. I am not sure about buyinng the Wooting 80HE but would be interested to see it in hands of an good rts player. Would test it myself even, because i am super intersted. Myself coming from an older Razer Black widow. Also i am an 100% tactile entousiast because i am typing also very fast with 10fingers and i like the feedback. Is there something comparable with the wooting keyboard?

    I feel like the true potential of HE keyboards are currently being limited by games themselves. If there was an "enable analog input" option, you could have player movement speed tied to the % keypress, much like is possible in Trackmania, instead of it just being a binary "moving" or "not moving".

    • @Keybored
      @Keybored  Місяць тому +2

      I do agree with you! Even in forza, it took a bit to set it up so that it was effective. But when I did, it was a huge impact!

    • @BenedictTanShanWen
      @BenedictTanShanWen Місяць тому

      There is also an incentive for mainstream developers to design HE capabilities out of their games over time to defeat rapid trigger from giving a hardware advantage which could potentially put off the wider player base from buying their games because they feel that in order to be competitive; money needs to be spent.

    • @Asparagaceae
      @Asparagaceae Місяць тому +1

      Not just games but also game companies. Valve just banned snap tap from CS2 which is understandable but still disappointing because it was a clear advantage that HE has over mechanical.

    • @zeffmalchazeen3429
      @zeffmalchazeen3429 Місяць тому

      @@BenedictTanShanWen i use wooting 60he on WoW. Rapid trigger does not work there due to the global cooldown. Snap tapp is also useless. But, the multi tap feature is great because you can bind up to 4 keys in a single button.

    • @samkerski
      @samkerski Місяць тому +1

      @zeffmalchazeen3429 these are all valid concerns, but everybody here is still talking about converting the analog signal of the keypress (0-100%) into binary (0 OR 100%) movement, which is where all the snaptap and wrappy snappy spanky wanky hey macarana comes from. Ban that, whatever. What we really have yet to see is truly analog movement. Like, if you have "A" pressed down 71%, your character strafes left at 71% speed. Thing is, while this could give players another interesting tool for controlling their movement, it would 100% have to start from game devs coding fully analog 0-100% movement into their game. Which I actually think is really good, because it wouldn't even be appropriate to add in every game (like CS, that game is balanced around very specific movement speeds and should stay that way) and should be left in control of the devs.

    I feel like the wooting has a good amount of customization available that you can kinda bridge the gap between an enthusiast mechanical keyboard and a hall effect board. Me personally I'm running it with Geon Raw HE switches, gummy o ring mounted, and an FR4 plate. Sounds pretty good, nowhere near as good as my customs BUT very good for a gaming HE keyboard for not that much effort put in.

    Wooting PCB not only is compatible in terms of switches, but that universal tray mount and standard GH60-style layout (including the USB) makes it even more versatile since there's still a good handful of keyboards with USB cutouts for GH60 left-handed usb ports. Frog Mini makes for a good option for top mount, and I actually like doing an o-ring mount in the redux case. Also did basically one of the day-1 frankens by putting the lekker stems into the Geon Raptor housings, combine that with a CF plate (or get an alu plate from hypekeyboards), and overall I'm really pleased. It still noticably has that signature HE sound but it's a lot more approachable, just maybe a bit thin on the sound. If the RAW switches come up to the hype, then I think HE will be in good hands soon. I just wish the wooting 80HE didn't have that f-row FC660 layout and didn't use that plate-silicone mount.

  • @kenguru_kbd
    @kenguru_kbd Місяць тому

    Hey Scott, I think you did a pretty good job describing all the stuff around HE keyboards.
    I think, even though this particular combination was not really your thing sound and feel wise, the concept of a universal tray-mount PCB like the Rakka you showed with Wooting switch compatibility and all that combined with a 60% case that suits your preferences might be the most interesting option for people that are a little bit deeper into the hobby already.
    If i was looking for an HE keyboard I‘d mainly look at layout compatibility (split backspace and right shift matters to me, as well as a 7u bottom row) and how independent the software is from companies and how much is open sourced.
    In addition, I can just slap that in any case I want then, combined with a (probably better stiffer) plate I enjoy. I think even gummy o-ring mount could potentially work out.
    In this particular field you can definitely see a few things happening already, with Geon apparently starting to make PCBs that seem to suit these kind of needs as well.

    • @kenguru_kbd
      @kenguru_kbd Місяць тому

      If more PCBs like that come out in the future, I would actually be interested to explore that new technology and play around with it‘s sound and how far you can go in terms of mounting/feel also.

    Best software at least for Wooting so far, as for keyboard parts it's all about preference, i would recommand getting the 60HE PCB kit and slap it in your favorite ( compatible ) 60 % case, as for the 80HE i don't really see the need for this format but once again everyone have different needs, and i will change my lekker switches soon as i find one that have a sound i like.

    • @Keybored

      F keys always at the ready and separate from the rest of the keys is a big reason why as well as extra side keys and arrow keys separate. It's insanely useful for non-competitive games that use a lot of keys like Elite Dangerous, Star Citizen, Arma 3, Squad, some strategy games, Flight Simulator, Mechwarrior, Baldur's Gate 3, WoW and FF14, etc etc. Essentially a ton of non-FPS games.

  • @Dad_K
    @Dad_K Місяць тому

    Since many don't like the sound of HE keyboards, could you do a short-form video of the most impactful/best mods to improve the sound of an HE keyboard? I would assume steps would be to lube everything, tape the PCB, install sound dampener (e.g. kilmat), get thick/good keycaps?

  • @dahuman
    @dahuman Місяць тому

    The Q1 HE is good for wireless gaming because the dongle is 1k polling and you are never super far away from your computer, I also immediately changed the key caps out to cherry and just top lubed the switches which made it sound pretty darn good. You need to update the firmware right away though, I was a KS backer and the initial firmware had that key push problem but it's no longer there after the firmware updates. I do still have my Wooting 60HE and it's got the aluminum case with other mods on it but I don't use it anymore because of the wireless on the Q1 HE, I also have the non pre-build version of the 80HE coming then I'll have the best balance of both depends on what I'm doing. :-D

    Great video and I've been contemplating an 80HE so it helps -- I don't really like this scoring format though.
    You could have a keyboard be "sliiiiiightly better in most categories" and then be absolutely horrible in another category, but it would still get the biggest score.
    Similarly, say a keyboard has a feel that is way-way better than all the others -- that wouldnt really be represented in the score, it'd still just be 1 point higher than all the others.
    I think it'd be a lot better if you just rate them all 1-10 on each category, independently of the others. that's just me though, thanks for the comparison!

    I'm glad Meletrix that is selling the HE module for the Boog separately so you can actually build a Zoom75 with the Boog module if you want the Zoom75 aesthetics.
    The software was definitely a bit clunky but they are still developing it and I'm hoping that this improves... I still actually want SOCD control and they say they're still working on it. Rapid trigger works and macros are hard to understand but as a board, it's basically a worse sounding Zoom75 with HE trigger sensitivity.
    Meletrix also maintains a list of compatible switches. But honestly they're all still pretty weak compared to even a good Speed switch like the Gateron Smoothie Silver.

    sorry I don't like my keyboards to sound like a transformer operating a jackhammer. I like them as quiet as they can be while still being snappy so I am not distracted and so I don't distract others. Why the hell would you want your keyboard to make noise? Ridiculous.

      It's a good keyboard. I think there was a bit of software bug with mine, but it was fine as long as I didn't set the actuation to .1MM

      @@Keybored hmmm that didnt happen to me i had q w e a s d on the lowest since i play FPS games but i set it later to .2 since i didnt like that sometimes i touched 2 keys at once and i have also a typing and gaming profile that i switch ( if the stabs would be better stock and more switches then those 3 they have on the website it would be a wooting killer i just like more the build quality of the keychron )

    Wooting has demonstrated how the entire MX custom keyboard industry has ignored and failed gamers.
    There is nothing to prevent MX custom keyboard firmware having a UI to QMK that is as easy to use and provides functionality similar to Hall effect keys.
    The custom keyboard community is guilty of being anti-gamer.
