Great job, man! It's awesome that, despite getting rid of the HVGN name, you're keeping up the great quality of work you've always had. You handled a great game too! Jumping Flash doesn't get enough love. Keep up the good work.
Just wanna note: This early PS1 game has your feet always on the screen when you're looking down but many games THREE GENERATIONS LATER still don't bother with that detail.
+benbmusic88 You friggin beat me to it!!! I was going to say that Sony has a great IP in Jumping flash, perfect for their upcoming PS VR!!! The clean cartoony graphics would be easy to render fast, the mechabunny robbit provides a stable cockpit environment, and the verticality of gameplay would be thrilling!!!! But it would have to be a full remake in order to work properly with VR
benbmusic88 Agreed, that would be amazing. I've been pining for a (spiritual or official) sequel to Jumping Flash for well over a decade, but a VR one is even better than what I had in mind.
I remember playing this way back when and then for YEARS after, having NO idea what it was that I had played. And trying to get info from friends with "it's that game where you play a giant robot bunny that shoots lasers and jumps over castles and ferris wheels" did not give any results other than "...what?"
I've been watching Derek's videos for about four years now, and I feel honored to of seen him succeed and bloom over time. Really hope that you'll be able to do this full time man! You deserve it!
Holy shit... dude, this game was my favorite back when I was a kid! I got a demo disc for my ps1 that had a trex tech demo where you can move him around and make him roar and this games first 2 levels were on the demo disc as well. I loved it so much that I made my mom go buy the full game lol. My fave three games on ps1 were FF9, novastorm and jumping flash. You bringing back so many memories man, thank you.
Nice to see reviews from here again. I actually remember playing that Ghost in the Shell game when I was kid, renting the playstation from blackbuster video, I remember getting stuck on the time bomb level, I was never too good at scavenger hunts under time limits. At the time I didn't know it was based on an anime, I Was only like 10 at the time so I was too young to see it even if I was aware of its existance. I hope to see you review that game or just review games in general here, Derek.
My friend just randomly gave my a shoe box, about a year ago. And when I opened it up, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the box was full of PS1 games. The box contained games such as Metal Gear Sold, Wip3out. And of course Jumping Flash! Nothing beats having a good friend give you a shoe box, filled with video games. Thank you Alexander!
Stop Skeletons From Fighting This may be the whiskey talking but.... I LOVE YOUR REVIEWS MAN Refreshing to see an online reviewer that hasn't jumped the shark to lets play. Keep up the great work! Glad your back from Alasksa or wherever
Haven't enjoyed one of your videos this much in a while! Love the new more focused direction, but on the shots of you, might wanna pull that camera back a few inches, too zoomed in.
No joke, when I got my Playstation, this and Wipeout were my first games for it. I still, oddly enough, have both games, too. I do still wish we could get an HD Jumping Flash, though... but sadly that'll probably never happen.
Yeah, there were a lot of things going against the PS1 Ghost in the Shell game. It was released 2 years after the movie version of GitS and didn't even use the same art style. It was also released years before the version most people associate with it which is Stand Alone Complex which ran on Adult Swim.
That whole jerking the camera down at your feet when jumping thing is the same thing that Bubsy 3D does. Besides that, this game is giving me SERIOUS bomberman 64 and... oddly enough, Ganbare Goemon vibes.
Keep up the good work, Derek. Glad to see you putting out content again. Can't tell you how many games I've added to my collection because of your recommendations.
Welcome back, Derek! Interesting review/retrospective as always and a nifty bit of history as well. Looking forward to an eventual GITS video, too. That game is amazing!
YES! Finally someone who loves Jumping Flash just as much as me! This was my second game I owned for the ps1 when it came out and I was addicted to it. I thought the graphics and the 3d environment were the greatest thing ever when I first played it. Thanks for making this video.
Genius!!! When I saw the video title I was like "oh my god! This is like peanut butter and jelly!" You (formerly HVGN) talking about Jumping Flash! It's just so perfect to me. I was like "how did none of us ever think to ask you to talk about this game? It's cool you give recognition to some games from the mid-90's (Clock Tower, D, and this game) when 3D was still new and developers were a lot more experimental with how games could be developed with this new dimension on consoles. Earlier 3D games like Jumping Flash are magnificent examples of games that were overlooked and sort of left behind after 3D gaming had advanced and evolved at a seemingly exponential rate away from its infancy, and consumers and developers started to get a feel for what worked, sold, and what didn't work in 3D.
Great review, SSFF! Personally, I find that a lot of the psx games have aged fantastically. Gems like Strider 2, Gex 3, & Rival Schools are still as much fun to play today as they were two decades ago.
Just one suggestion: if you're going to be so "animated" while in front of the cam, you may want to back up away from your face a bit... it kinda has me going "whoah!" every time you come on screen.
Richard Craig we're still finding the right lens/lighting combination with our new apartment. we shot the live action stuff twice and we thought about reshooting a third time but at a certain point you need to leave well enough alone and push forward.
Stop Skeletons From Fighting Glad to see you still putting out content. I'm not sure if you're looking for constructive criticism or not but if you're looking for examples of what looks good / less in your face - Check out how 'Best Week Ever' on VH1 did/does it. That way if you feel the need to talk with your hands it's in the shot as well. All in all, glad to see you back on the scene :D
Richard Craig I concur. Remember when people watch this stuff on their computer screens, they are usually just inches away from the screen. You were WAY to close, and it felt like you were violating my personal space. Please film from further away.
Jumping Flash! for me was one of them games that made me who I am today, It got me into gaming in a big way and I wont forget that! Its 20 Years old today so we finally got to put out our video if it! I never managed to play 2, Hopefully we'll get to it soon. I loved what you did with this video, the use of music was great. Maybe thats because I'm a fan and I love the music but it really made the video work!
***** WOOOOOOOO HANG ON, WHATS THIS DIVE BOMB AND SPEED THING? OMG 20 years and I've Never played that part!!! well thats the new thing I learnt today. Thank you Derek!
If LSD: Revamped is anything to go by, maybe there's hope someone make remaster this game. We could only dream of this gem getting revived with modern controls and updated graphics.
I'm going through a rough spot right now and your videos always help, Thanks Derek PS I miss having you on the Space Money Octagon streams. They're now less retro lol but I still love Calvin and Toben
I bought the Japanese import of Jumping Flash at the time it was released and it was one of the best PS1 games I've ever played at the time. Really blew me away. First game to really give me a sense of vertigo being up so high. The subtle sounds of the wind blowing as you reached higher heights. Groundbreaking title.. and this was before analog too.
Oh, I'd almost forgotten about this one! I loved it. It was strangely soothing, yet also the first game that gave me a real physical sense of vertigo in a few spots. I didn't even know there was a sequel until now. Thanks!
Also, coming out on steam in June is "MANOS" The Hands Of Fate Director's Cut. It's a retro platformer based on the movie. I'm curious if you know about the game and if you weren't aware of it, I recommend picking it up! I have the original version on my Iphone and it's a fun retro game! Anyways, your choice if you want to review it, let alone play it, but just felt the need to give it a shout out.
Great to see reviews again! I played the hell out of the Ghost in the Shell game as a teen. I loved the anime movie so I picked it up blindly, and was rewarded with an awesome game.
There was a place near me at the time that had 3 PlayStations, and was letting people pay to play them per hour. I got to know the owner a bit (as a kid) and since I also had a PlayStation I was exchanging some games with him occasionally. One of those games was Jumping Flash, and that's how I got to play it. Also I played the crap out of the Ghost in the Shell demo from OPSM back in the day too.
I remember playing the jumping flash demo on the kiosk they had in a Toys R Us. I was severely disapointed by it. I remember trying to find out the controls, walking about three feet, falling off an edge, and then waiting WAY to freaking long for it to load the level again. That experience soured me toward the PS1 for a while.
Lol wait, your from Alaska? I saw the dimond mall ice rink, at fist assumed it was just some generic mall, then you mentioned the K B toys or whatever it was called, I used to love that store so much always messed around with the PS and and N64 while my parents where Christmas shopping. Anyway, was tryna find a review on this game, cool to see a fellow Alaskan reviewing it! Kudos man, from Palmer, AK.
I played this game when it was first released and I was amazed by how high the robit-thing can jump and the colorful graphics. This game was my first introduction to how odd Japanese sensibilities could be. There definitely should be a remake or a sequel for current gen systems.
The footage of you talking is shot uncomfortably close. I dunno if it's because you don't have the space or what, but if you can I'd shoot those from further back next time. Nice to see a new review from you.
I played this game when I was a kid, but the Japanese version. The early model ps1 consoles in the U.S. had a hack where you could use a paperclip and can read Japanese games, originally you couldn't play Japanese games, but it was pretty cool at the time.
I've too always felt that this series contribution to 3D gaming was underrated, however Geograph Seal is the true/original innovator. Ultima Underworld (and System Shock) did free look and true 3D before Jumping Flash, Duke 3D and Quake, though enemies are sprites.
Good video, but that was a very sudden ending. Felt like it just stopped, rather than finished. Other than that, glad to see you making video game reviews again. :)
Jason Lee i know what you mean. we had shot a call back goof to the "jump and go" thing for the ending but it wasn't working and we didn't have time to reshoot it. i'm trying to improve production quality and release time, and this video had already been delayed long enough. so ending or no ending, i had to get it out
Great job, man! It's awesome that, despite getting rid of the HVGN name, you're keeping up the great quality of work you've always had. You handled a great game too! Jumping Flash doesn't get enough love. Keep up the good work.
cool how you are here antdude
Dude... it's Nitrorad!
Just wanna note: This early PS1 game has your feet always on the screen when you're looking down but many games THREE GENERATIONS LATER still don't bother with that detail.
I love simple PS1 polygon graphics with minimal texturing - this game looks sweet.
A remaster of this with VR would be incredible
+benbmusic88 You friggin beat me to it!!! I was going to say that Sony has a great IP in Jumping flash, perfect for their upcoming PS VR!!! benbmusic88 Agreed, that would be amazing. I've been pining for a (spiritual or official) sequel to Jumping Flash for well over a decade, but a VR one is even better than what I had in mind.
That’s freakin brilliant especially with the PSVR!!!!!
not for people with motion sickness.
Jumping flash came out on ps4 and ps5
Love your reviews, man. You got the right balance of opinion and fact with wonderfully eloquent narration.
Awesome video Derek, thanks for all of the entertainment over the years.
I remember playing this way back when and then for YEARS after, having NO idea what it was that I had played. I loved this game! My sis would watch me play this on Christmas morning before we could wake our parents to open presents.
Nice to see reviews from here again. I'm a heterosexual guy but when i see Derek in a new video...i have to question myself sometimes...
You are not alone.
Salokin Sekwah Same here...
God damn is he a good-looking guy.
Same here,
My friend just randomly gave my a shoe box, about a year ago. And when I opened it up, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the box was full of PS1 games. You have no idea how much it makes my day seeing a video from you in my subscription feed. Thanks much sir!
This was my first experience with a 3D “playground” style of game and I loved it.
Great video brother.
I can hear Ian saying "Cutesy doom" with a hint of venom in his voice. Thanks for that flashback.
Stop Skeletons From Fighting This may be the whiskey talking but.... I LOVE YOUR REVIEWS MAN Refreshing to see an online reviewer that hasn't jumped the shark to lets play. Keep up the great work! Glad your back from Alasksa or wherever

"Jumping Flash Twooo! Biig Trouble in Little Muuu!"
Keep up the good work, Derek. Glad to see you putting out content again. Can't tell you how many games I've added to my collection because of your recommendations.
nice one! good to se new stuff from you. i have this one already as one of the few psonegames i own.
Changing "I Gotta Believe" to "Jump and Go!" was freaking brilliant.
the new video quality and format is great, though I felt the ending was a little abrupt still great work dude
Great to see you making videos again, Derek.
Big fan of your work!
Greetings from the Netherlands
Welcome back, Derek! Interesting review/retrospective as always and a nifty bit of history as well. Looking forward to an eventual GITS video, too. That game is amazing!
Really loving the new aesthetic you have for your videos. Great stuff! Has a sense of your own personality just as much as HVGN did.
YES! Finally someone who loves Jumping Flash just as much as me! This was my second game I owned for the ps1 when it came out and I was addicted to it. I thought the graphics and the 3d environment were the greatest thing ever when I first played it. Thanks for making this video.

I think JF2! is better than the first. You're right, they NEED a remaster or sequel!

OK I'm really really digging this new style of Reviews, Loved the scenes of you goofing around Keep them up Derek.
I love that you are talking more about 3D games. I love my bits and pixels, but I grew up during the 3D polygon era.
Just one suggestion: if you're going to be so "animated" while in front of the cam, you may want to back up away from your face a bit... it kinda has me going "whoah!" every time you come on screen.

Derek, all I can say is that your review of this game encourages me to add this to my collection. Keep up the good work!
yo Derek love your new stuff...but im just wondering you still gonna finish edf and shatter hand
YES! Always glad to see a viideo from ya Derek!

My only memory of this was from playing it on a ps1 demo disc, I remember playing that one level over and over haha
Great review, and I may want to pick up a physical copy, but what about frame rate/slowdown?
I bought the Japanese import of Jumping Flash at the time it was released and it was one of the best PS1 games I've ever played at the time. Really blew me away. Loving the new style, loved the video, way to go Derek!
This was one of the first 3D games I ever saw in KB Toys, and the level size and moving clouds made me feel really free and blew my mind.
What's the music in 0:25. I listened to the ost in junping flash but i counldnt find it.
its stage 6-1.
Frank West thank you so much
Good to see SOMEONE remembered this game. Glad it was you.
A new video! Awesome! All settled in here in Seattle yet?
There was a place near me at the time that had 3 PlayStations, and was letting people pay to play them per hour. I got to know the owner a bit (as a kid) and since I also had a PlayStation I was exchanging some games with him occasionally. One of those games was Jumping Flash, and that's how I got to play it.

RIP Dimond Center KB Toys. Such bittersweet nostalgia.
This was one of the first PS game I ever played along with Motortoon and Toshinden.
new video, new location...
man, it's good to see you again.
Oh, I remember Ghost in the Shell! That game is awesome! Could we see a review of it in the future? BTW, great review!
I've seen the game in the wild, but never knew much about it. Thanks for this video. Also I loved Ghost in the Shell on PS1.
Great to see you back, Derek!
Neat to see you making videos again!
I feel like they missed an opportunity to call the rabbit Jack.
You're back! :D
Derek, this was a great review! Keep up the good work!

I'm liking this new look, Derek.
Is this your attempt to move toward into the mainstream?
Jumping Flash 2 was the first I played in the series, and it's still my favorite game of all time..
ssff! How do you record all these games in 60fps?
The Jetpods allows you to jump to the other level,
the way you free each piece of the crater planet, is by activating the Exit switch.
Well said I wish fps would go back to the more colorful fun loving atmosphere I'm surprised Nintendo hasn't done that
I played this game when it was first released and I was amazed by how high the robit-thing can jump and the colorful graphics. This game was my first introduction to how odd Japanese sensibilities could be. There definitely should be a remake or a sequel for current gen systems.
Jumping Flash definitely deserves to be revisited, the series freakin rocked.
Fun game thanks for covering it!
The footage of you talking is shot uncomfortably close. I dunno if it's because you don't have the space or what, but if you can I'd shoot those from further back next time. Nice to see a new review from you.
I loved this one and the sequal "Jumping Flash 2: Big Trouble in Little Mu" was great ^_^
I played this game when I was a kid, but the Japanese version. The early model ps1 consoles in the U.S. had a hack where you could use a paperclip and can read Japanese games, originally you couldn't play Japanese games, but it was pretty cool at the time.
I remember playing the demo of this back in the day it was pretty neat, never had the full game though.
Great review, please bring back the HVGN guitar riff at the beginning of the videos!
I remember playing this demo a lot as a kid, cool game, very different.
SegaCDUniverse I'll find a PAL copy someday...
awesome! love JF2 to bits, played it so often...
I'm wondering if all video game reviewers have a bucket list that include "Film myself taking a shower"?
I've too always felt that this series contribution to 3D gaming was underrated, however Geograph Seal is the true/original innovator.
Ultima Underworld (and System Shock) did free look and true 3D before Jumping Flash, Duke 3D and Quake, though enemies are sprites.
Good video, but that was a very sudden ending. Felt like it just stopped, rather than finished. Other than that, glad to see you making video game reviews again. :)

Still great to see you back doing content again. Even if you didn't have it on camera, I hope you enjoyed a glass of wine after finishing it.
Jason Lee I loved you in My Name is Earl and Chasing Amy, Mr. Lee.
Thanks for the new review, I left a facebook comment so I wont go over that again :) Always enjoy your reviews though!
Great video dude!
Had to watch the episode again, this is probably the PS1 game that is closest to my heart.
Holy shit, is that Dimond Center Mall? I grew up there and went to Abbott Loop as a kid.
I really like your new style, Derek.
Never even heard of Robbit before, but now it's something I must have......
Wounded how this will play on the PlayStation Classic?
How do I install Flash on my PlayStation?
lol KB Toys. i remember playing demos of this, espn Xtreme games, battle arena toshiden, and twisted metal at my local mall KB back in the day.
