I’ve been playing it on my laptop with a PlayStation 5 controller over bluetooth and it’s like I’m on the bus ride home in 2005 and I have a Motorola RAZR
I loved DoomRPG2 back in the day and I always wanted to play the original, I'll definitely check this out. Holding out hope they can bring back the sequel.

Doom RPG helped me get through the boredom of high school, used to play it on my phone during class after i was done with stuff, legit fun little dungeon crawlers!
I also found it in high school, from some hidden free jar game dump. The farther I got, the more astonished I became that the game I was playing was actually a real thing, actually published by id. It was unbelievable, and perfect for school!
Yeah, same! I used to play on my phone waiting for my Masters lectures to start! Was really disappointed when it was over when I finally finished them.
Man I remember actually playing Doom II RPG back in the day. Remember recently looking it up again and hoping to find it in the Android Store, but no dice.
My wife had the first mobile Doom RPG, she loved it and for years she'd tell me about it until one day she saw me watching a video on Doom. I was like damn, I choose right.
13:15 This is also kind of sad, considering that the DS got a full-fledged true 3D dungeon crawler in the form of "Fighting Fantasy." It runs SHOCKINGLY well. It stays at a steady 30FPS, despite having complicated polygonal geometry - no raycasting. If you've never seen it, it might be a good one to cover on Punching Weight someday. (And it's actually a pretty good game, too, although the difficulty is way too high. Then again, that does go with the Fighting Fantasy brand.)
Oh man I didn't even know there was a DS version of Warlock of Firetop mountain. Been playing the switch version and loved that and loved the evil evil evil books back in the day. May have to find a way to play that.
Your sponsor should give you a bonus because talking about death crimson is the only way anyone has ever got me to watch all the way through a sponsor segment
I've played them ALL! Seeing that for years a "dumbphone" was all I had, back when first iPhones were already a thing. Come to think of that, there were many little Java gems I've put hours into - I remember one game which was basically a clone of puyo puyo, came pre-installed on my phone. I've caught a pneumonia due to my own stupidity (T-shirt of your favourite band plus leather jacket on top looks good, but isn't practical when there's like -10 C degrees outside and you are going for a bar crawl with friends) and ended up in a hospital for about a week with high fever. I've started to play it out of boredom and I was so hooked that my phone has ended up being plugged into the charger at all times, because I've spent HOURS a day playing this. BTW. Wolfenstein RPG was retconned as Doom prequel and Blazkowicz was Doom guy ancestor, lol! Yes, the turn-based gameplay has worked great. I wish that these games would get a re-release, even though they are a relic, they are an incredibly cool relic and deserve preservation.
I played through doom rpg on a sony ericsson w300i back in 2009 and I remember finding a debug menu that let me change a lot of of the game's variables, and turns out that the tile to tile movement is the game moving through the map in real time, but super fast, and while fiddling with one of the variables I'd made each turn and move feel like a fps proper. it even ran smoothly on that phone's 160x120 screen!
Orcs & Elves I did play on the DS back in the day and actually enjoyed it. I'm not a big RPG fan. But I love id Software and John is one of my favorite game developers. So I decided to give it a try and was pleasantly surprised.
Well that is probably because SMT copies D&D.... This channel always misses so much. like how Doom was designed using D&D and was a tabletop RPG before an FPS. famously.
Don't forget 1981 Wizardry. Those turn-based DRPG's with party management etcetera such as Strange Journey and Etrian Odyssey has some inspirational from it.
My Nokia phone had a more limited version of Doom RPG and there were a NPC that joked about being a different guy than the other one despite being only a color palette swap due to space limitations.
I specifically bought Orcs & Elves for the DS because I heard the story about this series somewhere before and found it interesting. I have a lot of nostalgia for old Java phone games, and even though I did not play any of these on a phone back in the day, the DS port still gives me a kick of that nostalgia.
Thank god Gunther got some love, I remember I liked him so much that I actually made a “create a wrestler” of him in one of the smackdown vs raw games, forgot how surprisingly good these games were
I've been trying to dev out a spiritual sequel of sorts to Doom RPG. It's on the back burner for now, as the prototype wasn't as fun as I wanted. It's a mix of RPG and DoomRL. I'm thinking about moving to an action point system (Fallout 1/2). Like I said, back burner for now. I started this process because I love DoomRPG, and the lack of it is palpable.
The most egregious example of preserved 1337 speak is that kid in Tony Hawk's Underground right as you're about to leave New Jersey and he calls you a noob and says he's gonna pwn you or whatever. It's amazing.
