There's a bit more to one of those reviews that criticized the control scheme in Alien Resurrection. It's already funny to look back on in hindsight knowing it has become the standard for FPS controls, but the reviewer also said people should just pass on Resurrection and wait for Aliens Colonial Marines (mind you it was originally scheduled for a 2001 release on PS2). Yeah that actually happened.
True
THE PLAYSTATION CAN PRODUCE MIND-BOGGLING EFFECTS
Well, an effect of all this is my mind being boggled.
They still have a certain charm that's been lost since the PS3
@@Brian-jv8iy slim and super slim are the worst versions in my opinion, my favourite has to be the one with 4 USB ports and a bunch of unnecessary ports including a freaking SD card slot
@@mischiefthedegenerateratto7464 Red Ring Of Death. the old ps3 models had horrible heat dissipation, and would literally melt from the intense heat inside the console.
**insert spoopy skeleton**
Fun fact: A hack dropped fairly recently that actually *does* add mouse support to the Super Famicom version of _Clock Tower._ It also adds the exclusive rooms from the PS1 port, but the fact that it works with the mouse is a definite selling port all by itself.
This is the definitive way to play Clock Tower.
You saying the PS1 _Clock Tower_ has exclusive rooms? Might need to install that, then. 🤔
I just sold my PS1 Clock Tower...now Im sad.
That is not how fun facts work.
@@musicdude1540 why not? It was fun to learn and it was a fact
My dad worked on the Die hard trilogy. Interesting fact (which is probably widely known by now) the faces of the enemies are the faces of the game developers.
That's awesome!!!
See, that multi-mice necklace may be a funny joke for now but when the apocalypse comes Derek'll rule the streets with that getup
Election day is coming
When apocalypse comes? You mean it hasn't come yet?
"the PlayStation can produce mind-boggling effect"

No one deserves the title of "Console Mouse King" more than Derek. Just sayin'.
That's Uncle Derek to you.
imagine having almost 300k subs and not knowing how to play import games. this is what is wrong with modern game collectors. a true turd of a channel.

@@romein138 yeah you are
Facts
Every time that Tube Tv smashes against the ground... I cry a little inside. Thanks alot man. ;(
yeah CRT tvs are the best for retro gaming. ps2 games never look as good on modern hdtvs even with a framemeister
Nah, it wasn't a Sony Trinitron.
That would have been an absolute tragedy.
Where did that video come from? I can’t find it anywhere. It’s hilarious!
"it's so smooth, it made Virtual Cop look like a slide show" - showing Die Hard 2 with abysmal frame rate and Virtual Cop with smooth frame rate.
C'mon Uncle Derek...
So true.
Also game play wise you gotta be smokin crack if you think Die Hard 2 is better.
@@mikecontra8844 That's what they say about most good things... i don't need drugs to enjoy progrock! Yet haven't played Die Hard 2, it looks fun.
What he meant was that Die Hard 2 has so many things happening all at once with a solid framerate, that Virtua Cop feels like a slideshow in comparison since VC is not as hectic as DH2.
@@jju00 , vouching for that. Die Hard light-gunning gets frenetic with the enemies, destructible environment and avoiding civilians while finding bonus items and event triggers/cancellation to shoot. Solid👍
Playstation Mouse with Dune 2000, totally my jam back in the day. It worked (for the most part) pretty seemless.
Too bad the graphics look like garbage compared to the PC version...
How does it play compared to Dune 2000 (or tbh Dune 2) on PC?
IIRC, as with Command & Conquer Red Alert PS1 titles, the mouse controller worked best alongside a second controller's face buttons via the other controller jack in order to access functions / command units, etc. without having to click upon the on-screen menu.
... If anyone's curious, the first C&C release on PS1 does NOT support mouse controller.
Did you ever do system-link play between a couple, earlier equipped PS1s in Dune 2000?
I loved Dune 2000 on Pc, are you talking about a PsX port or played it with the mouse on pc too?
I swear Derek was trying to go so long on that "Don't play Clock Tower Ghost Head" tangent while actively keeping himself from just saying "Nitro Rad suffered through the whole thing already, go watch him."
SSFF: "[Lemmings] is a PC game classic" Amiga fans: Snubbed once again.
The Amiga is a personal computer.... right?
@@BusinessZeus Yes and no. PC has multiple meanings, but is most commonly used as a shorthand for "IBM-compatible PC". An Amiga is a "PC" in the same sense that an iPad is a PC.
Please let the Amiga fans in peace at their retirement homes.
@@Sameeer_Saker I'm 36, the retirement homes won't let me in yet.
@@blahdelablah I'm 18 they won't let me on either!
Yo that resident evil survive playthrough is one of my favourite things you made back in the day. I still quote this on your videos ever since: DO WHAT IT DO PHONE HANG UP!
Made myself laugh during this video. I didn't notice the Nitro Rad shirt until Derek started ragging on Clock Tower 2 and it reminded me of his video on it. I wonder if that was intentional.
Edit: Oh man, I remember Sorcerer's Maze from when I was a kid. Do not remember that box art though. That's amazing.
That metallica lars ulrich napster reference. God bless your soul for that uncle derek.
With the terrorists being metalica i can't help to think of their leader screaming "YEAH" at the end of every sentence.
I wish I had dubbing equipment to make that a reality.
I'm from Brazil and i was one of the few curious kids that chosen the zeebo instead of a PS2
it was the "pre-launch edition" (like the NES in NY) and lacked like half of the accessories that were incluided with the later one (like a keyboard, a better gamepad and the boomerang thing)
I actually don't have it anymore because it broke twice, and when i took it to get serviced, the Zeebo was discontinued mid-fix and they just gave me half of the money back.
Ah, those were the days...
I feel like there's a Three Blind Mice joke to be made about playing Time Crisis with the PlayStation Mouse, but I just can't see it.
19:42 Funnily enough someone recently released a patch for the Super Famicom version of the first Clock Tower that adds mouse support and the extra content from the PlayStation version. The Windows port is still the best version, though (has higher resolution graphics).
8:55 Dude you have no idea how many years I've been looking for that game (Jumping Flash) I'm 30 and I played that game for hours at a cousin's house when I was like 8/9 but I never knew how it was called, crazy to think this is not the first time I hear Jumping Flash but I never saw the footage to realize it was that game, so thanks a lot for that!
Emulate it now so you don't forget!
It’s on the psone classic. You can get one for a buck and a half I think
When he started talking about Clock Tower 2, anyone else remembered Nitro Rad and been thinking about him to the point where you noticed that Derek was wearing a nitrorad shirt at 20:18
Oh mannnn the "Is It Really That Bad?" era with Maya. Those were some G O O D times.
X-Com on PS1 is pretty slow, and has some bad bugs (start with 2 empty memory cards, and alternate your saves between them), but it's still playable and fun. And the mouse is highly recommended for a *way* better user-interface experience.
Thankyou for mentioning alien ressurection, It truly is a hidden gem. One of the best hidden gems ever
Already watched on Patreon, watching again for the almighty algorithm!
thanks it got in my recommended and i hadnt watched the channel in a while
gaaaaaayeeeee
Good man
@Joey Maxon The irony of leaving a youtube comment like that...
The PS1 mouse is so amazing. When I got Die Hard Trilogy on release day, I could never get more than halfway through Die Hard 2 with a controller and I never had a light gun. I got a mouse a few years ago and beat it on my first try and it is such a satisfying experience with the mouse!
"ENHANCE THE DESTRUCTION"
I doubt that would have been possible on Die Hard 2! 😅
Man, so many hostages I shot with the explosive shells equiped shotgun! Jeez... Sorry!
You monster
I love this channel honestly there always teaching me something new about quirky little add-ons that we just forgot about growing up I love the fact that we get to peer into what these peripherals were really like. By the way my name is actually Derek and I approve of the hey Derek hey it's Derek I'm Derek. ssff ♡
I'm not Derek but this comment is cute, so I clicked like.
"Hey I'm Derek-" WHAT THE FU-
"-it's me, Derek." Oh thank god
I just started watching your videos this past weekend and I'm so glad I stumbled over your channel! Today I come to find out you guys are situated in Lynwood, which is epic! I live in Bellevue. That's all. Oh, and you have a new subscriber (bell notifications and all!)
A fun fact I learned from researching the Super Famicon Clock Tower recently: Yes the SNES version doesn't have mouse support, but not because they didn't want to! When Hifumi Kono pitched his idea for the game (a game where you run away from the threat instead of fight it), his peers told him it wouldn't work. Because they figured it wouldn't work they gave him a very small budget and team, and so they had to scrap mouse support and also had to make the mansion significantly smaller. So it makes sense that mouse support would come in the later ports.
Figured you might enjoy that tidbit!
(though there is a large chance you already knew)
Can we talk about how amazingly smooth Elemental Gearbolt is? I swear, just like with F-Zero X, a great framerate absolutely trumps using the processing power for extra visuals.
I'm sorry to say it, but I would really like a full clock tower 2 review for the playstation. Come on!! just one more time!
Derek doesn't really do reviews anymore but if you want a comprehensive review of that game you should check out Nitro Rad's video on it (which Derek is wearing of shirt of funnily enough)
"An Atari Jaguar classic." Now there's something you don't hear often. (but he's right Tempest is a jam)
Quite a treat getting 2 videos so close to each other.
Your videos are getting more and more interesting and with whackier jokes and editing which I'm loving.
Great work as usual.
Hold on... There's a Saturn mouse!? How have I never heard of this????!!!!
That's because it techincally didn't release in the states?
Just gotta say, this channel has consistently been making top tier quality content and I greatly appreciate this team and the effort here. Research is off the chain, and it shows. Over the last 10 years this remains one of my favorites.
Creaky appreciate these punching weight videos. Entertaining and educational, cheers.
Dude u r nailing it with interesting content lately. Keep it up! Glad I found u again.
I love Derek bringing up PS1 games I've never heard of before; the (usually) positive discussion of them always make me want to check them out!
It's your attitude and energy, bro.... THAT is what keeps me coming back to your channel, along with the dope content.... but you set it off right bro!
Thing I wanted to mention and think you would love Derek:
Dune 2000 on PS1 also uses the mouse in tandem with the controller and it's such a clunky and fun way to play. Thinking about the sad fact that Starcraft 64 doesn't have mouse support, makes me happy that this forgotten RTS DOES have support.
Welcome, to the TEST DESK.
AKA MY DESK.
Legit thought we were getting a new show. 😂
Cracked me up with that. He's a funny guy.
Oh awesome! Great to see more uploads. Neat vid
I've been wanting to get light gun games for my ps2 for years now. I just have no room for a tube tv and have no money for the games and peripherals
Few things make me as happy as a new SSFF vid. Let's gooooo
The amount of editing and researching going in those videos is insane! Thumbs up my man!
You guys are awesome! Thank you for making my week a little brighter.
Yes! I've been waiting for i don't know how long for someone to talk about Project Horned Owl.
It is nice to see Derek including Elemental GearBolt in the video. That game was absolutely amazing, and a real challenge for light gunslingers. Working Designs(God I miss Working Designs) even had this cool contest when the game launched. I wonder who won those coveted GunCons?
Happy to see you and producer Grace back in action, Derek! Great video as always.
4:07 the "left hand controller" + "right hand mouse" is ridiculously GOOD. You move with the left thumb, whereas in WASD you move using one-two fingers
I needed Uncle Derek's enthusiastic attitude today, thank you
Great vid as always
19:40 Hey Derek, someone actually recently made a rom hack of the Super Famicom version of Clock Tower called "Clock Tower Deluxe" that adds SNES mouse support. It also adds some of the bonus content from the PS1 version, fixes various bugs, and lets you run on the stairs.
I have not finished the video yet, but I already love the inclusion of the "The PlayStation can produce mind-boggling effects" in the background
19:12 I have a tokimeki memorial box set that came with a mouse, the box plays a little song when you open it
I got a PS3 in the last 2 years of its life and have been a Sony boy since. When I played Astro's playroom on the ps5, I was fascinated by all the old and bold tech I never new about. Amazing video too!
I am 0.01 seconds into this video and I'm already loving that wallpaper lol
Literally one of the few channels i have notifications for cuz of the retro content. Such a breath of fresh air compared to the same old youtube “news” channels that chase the youtube algorithm
Love you, Derek and Grace!
What a throw back. I found you by your review of Clocktower and I still watch your horror reviews. Hope you bring some spooky skeles back during this October!
Also while watching your footage, can't help but think the mouse would be perfect with a one handed controller. I used to have a black one for the PSX and while I was a child honestly would rather play some games on that one handed controller
that "Playstation is capable of producing mind boggling effects" snippet from a magazine preview is one of my favourite images ever
I really enjoyed this video. Great work team :)
Loved the jab at Lars. Made me happy, made me smile.
Holy shit. I've owned a mouse for my SNES, but I never knew about this.
Awesome episode!
imo consoles having mouse support should still be a thing. Like, they throw cities skylines on PlayStation plus but who wants to play that without a mouse?
If they did then maybe the FPS genre wouldn't have been ruined by console shooters.
Don't current gens support keyboard and mouse?
Edit: I'm not sure every game supports it but xbone and ps4 do natively support usb keyboard and mouse.
Two episodes in a row!!! Woooo! This is what I thought you would upload the other day cus the community post, but I still love the content lol
Great video! I was a huge fan of Elemental Gearbolt as a kid!
Holy crap, someone talking about Project Horned Owl. I played that game a few times back in the day. I remember really enjoying it. Elemental Gearbolt as well. I didn’t own a Guncon, but I’d play every lightgun game I could with a controller. I’d completely forgotten both of those games, but as soon as you said the names memories of them came flooding back. I can’t remember if I knew about the PlayStation mouse at the time, though I probably never even would have thought about using one with lightgun games. Really awesome video. If I ever have the space to get back into classic game collecting I really need to get a hold of one of these and re-experience some of my favorite lightgun games.
The image at 8:24 is the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. Imagine a much darker timeline where that image actually released as a peripheral.
Oh damn! Gunfighter, I remember playing that as a kid, I wouldn't have recalled that easily until you showed it. So now I have another PS1 game to the list of games I've lost possession of over the years.
Ahhhh you tease us with that Vampire Night port on your desk. So many extras on that thing. It's such a stupid, dumb, glorious game and I wouldn't have it any other way. I love it.
03:25 for a random appearance by F1 driver Jean Alesi
Derek: This is what the mouse was made for.
Me, who's been waiting the entire episode for Clock Tower: Boy was it ever!
Like the mvps that they are, Derek and Grace upload a video just as Im about to resign myself to eating my burger with nothing to watch.
Excellent work, guys!
Love your channel guys 🙂
Whoa another SSFF vid already? Hell yeah
28 minutes of greatness... Great video as always
Love the content
That quake 2 controls scheme that you called "bonkers" was the best one in the game! It was like almost like wasd + mouselook
hell yeah, new SSFF video
Loved this video Derek. Reminded me of the style of your videos from a few years ago. I would love to see more Re:Certified Classics and Past Mortems. Hope you also do some Halloween videos soon. I love your videos on horror games. Love you guys!
So I am just minding my own business, watching an interesting video about console mice.. and then this guy just deadass mentions A-Train! Holy hell, I have absolutely never seen or heard anyone mention this game outside of my house!
Heeeey! another upload so soon? :D i never get sick of your energy for the odd steps in video game history C:
Keep your amazing energy and great content!
I first heard of the PS mouse when Game Informer used it late into their Super Replay of Cyberia.
I am loving the King's Field screenshot wallpaper Derek
I have a place in my heart for videos about "useless video game peripherals" keep up the great work! Stay safe and have a great day!
I love all the dumb peripheral Punching Weights, Derek and Grace. Awesome job, as usual.
A new video so soon after the last? Awesome!
I gotta say Derek, that ad was actually entertaining, but only because of Dracula quoting 'Smooth' on your monitor.
Hey guys it him it’s Derek!
Uncle Derek!
That's him! Derek!
Hey Derek, its he Derek!
Sorry, who was it? I didn’t quite catch that.
Chad:yes it is!
god I will never stop laughing at that Alien Resurrection review you clipped.
the kicker is at the end of the article, which you didn't show, the reviewer says he'd rather wait for Colonial Marines to arrive "soon" because it'll be SO much better...
This was freakin’ cool! I forgot about a lot of these games!
Ghoul panic was my game back in the day, I'm so glad it's getting some love. Even if only a short mention. Had no idea it never came out in us. Make me so sad
Rescue Shot: Bubibo also supports the mouse (as said in the manual); that one is another Namco Guncon lightgun game but developed by Now Productions. It's very good!
There are also 2 other ps1 mouse bundles that I know of: Tokimeki Memorial and Shanghai: The Great Wall.
Thanks for the video
TWO SSFF videos in the same week!
Awesome!!
Keep up the good work :)
These mouse secrets videos are really fum to watch. Would definitely want to see more.
