- When should YOU REPLACE the TIMING CHAIN?
First, engine start at cold could reveal noises that, if left untreated, could lead to major repairs.
Many newer cars come with a timing chain instead of a timing belt, and most people think that they will never replace the timing chain simply because it is a chain. Nowadays, timing chains are thinner than they used to be in old cars, and together with long distances between services or services missed, they are prone to stretch, and then they become noisy at first before they completely fail. When replacing the timing chain new chain tensioner, new sprockets and new guides should be replaced ideally. However, as was the case here, we could reuse the tensioner and guide rail as they were still in good condition, and we have minimised the labour cost.

Good job and fairly easy to do with this engine unless one slide rail has to come out. Then the engine would have to come out, as already described here!
I just happened to have the injectors out on my W204 CDI 200 and then took the cylinder head cover off to inspect the chain, spur gears and camshafts. Everything is still super top, the chain has not been stretched, the sprockets and camshafts have no visible wear ;-))
Can the chain be unlink using that tool for any vehicle, like Toyotas Hondas etc?
It’s a great video, but you missed the most crucial part of the rebuild. How you actually got the cam shaft back in, how you set the timing, how you got the tensioner back on and tension on the chain. This is the meat and potatoes of the build and it’s unfortunate that in such a great video you missed this.

This engine yes seems poorly maintained. But i think in a lot of cases. Not only om651. They are ignoring the route cause. The oil filter housings drain dry Back to sump overnight. Causing delay on cold start oil feed. The oil drains back to sump via fiter supply channel. Try this. Remove your oil filter. Before a morning cold start. Ok i know oil housing is designed to empty to sump on removal. But a filter. Seconds before removal was immersed in oil. Filter would be dripping wet. If yours is bone dry. Your filter housing drained back many hours before. You got a drain back issue.

How to set the timing after the cam gears are removed?
My e class has only done 47,000 kms and the engine has this symptom on morning starts and hot starts when rpm is below 600 is this normal? doesnt feel normal to me, considering the car is only 40 odd thousand kilometers in!

Yep this is exactly what my gmc terrain was doing. Idiots at the place I bought it from said it was the throttle body and then had me continue to drive it assuring me it was fine. Now I need a new engine and only had the 12k car 4 months.
Damn, the two times my throttle body went out on my Malibu, my car would shake horribly if I went over 20 mph. My car physically couldn't. So idk how the mechanic would say it's fine to drive
How much it would cost? Thinking to do it on my merc too is the exact same model, there is no rattling noise but I want to change the chain tensioner and sprokets just is case .

Tsb says no consequential damage expected. So it's not necessary to do check valve and tensioner upgrade? Or is it just Benz trying to downplay the problem?
The latter. MB will never admit to this problem and my garage does not admit it either. They have been told to deny it as people at my dealer have said "the chain on these engines don't need replacing"
I have no noise on cold start. I only have an iron level noise at low rpm when I accelerate, once I let off the accelerator it disappears, or it disappears after 2000 rpm what can it be

I'm hoping to spread the word. If u have a 2012-2014 MB C-class and u have rattling sound and ur mechanic think it's the timing chain, call up ur MB dealership and get it diagnosed and fixed. The repair will be completely free. The timing chain issue is related to the camshaft adjuster issue, and it's part of the camshaft adjuster recall, in which MB corporate has extended the original factory warranty to 120k miles. So if u have timing chain issue, the camshaft adjuster is prob an issue as well and ur local MB dealership will repair it for free. I just had mine done recently.

I have an intermittent noise on idling on my 2013 SLK AMG and no one including Mercedes can solve the problem it’s only when the engine has been running for 20 mins or so and not all the time only occasionally it’s fully serviced no expense spared and runs like a dream otherwise ! Drives me mad 3 years of it now
Maybe engine mounts or a pully needs to be replaced.
Thanks I’ve not heard it for days now it is only a second or two when I do anyway I forget about it and if the radio is off and I hear I only remember it then ! It’s an annoying gremlin that appears rarely !!
I sounds like it could be a frequency noise.
Odd noises that only appear rarely can often be a frequency noise. Let me explain. Just like tuning a radio, you have to get the frequency on your radio just right to receive the radio station of your choice, turn the dial a fraction to the left or the right and nothing.
Often on cars you will have a loose bolt (The heat shields behind the exhaust is a common one.) that will cause something to vibrate and make the noise. It will only vibrate at a certain frequency, this frequency can only be achieved when the temperature is just right, the engine rpm is just right and sometimes even the air humidity can play a part.
I have a 1991 Land Cruiser, never had a vibration until i fitted a new exhaust, now the running board will vibrate but only at certain times. I have changed one of the parameters that was required to hit that frequency.

I have this problem as well with my W212 2009. My mechanic said always that the noise was not that serious to do an intervention. At the end I got a broken guide: a small peace was visible in the chain when the cover was removed.
Now my mechanic says that in fact even if the guide has lost a small peace of it, it is not really necessary to replace the guide together with the chain. His argument is that if the new chain is installed, it will never touch the guide any ways and so the risk in practice near to zero. The local Mercedes would have said that they never replace the guides neither, but I dont know whether they don't do that even in case of partially damaged guide?
My question is: Is my mechanic right in his reasoning regarding neglecting the guide replacement in case of small damages? What would be risk? Why should I replace the guide in case of damage?
So what did you do? If the guide is breaking up it will be going into the oil supply - could block / damage something else
I think you should have shown how to use the tool to remove the reset.

Had this a few times but repaired it every time with hydraulic tensioner that fits in the head

So if the camshaft sprockets showed wear and they were replaced, then the one sprocket down below on the crankshaft is worn as well and should have been replaced also, otherwise it will eat the new chain and this repair is very shortlived. There is a reason why the dealerships will change everything and not just something.

why would the engineers put the timing chain on the back side of the engine? Sounds like that completely makes the process of replacing much more time consuming and difficult.
They had to make an engine with the same harmful technical characteristics as the chain breaker bmw n87 2000. BMW and MERC have agreed to build vehicles that are beautiful and deliberately expensive to repair… (if you think about it, they are similar in concept). Mercedes needed a drive gear between the high-pressure pump and the camshafts that could do everything with maintenance-free gears. Customer MUST EXPENSE for maintenance.

Changing chains on these engines is a con job. Never recommend by manufacturers and chain should never be tight 😂😂😂
Good video but ok poor maintenance high miles can cause this. But i think ive found the reason. Especially on chain rattle om651 The real reason that sets some chain failure scenarios in motion. The oil filter housings are draining back overnite into engine sump. Try pulling your oil filter out before morning cold start. Ok i know removing filter and stem the oil runs back to sump yes. But in some cars oil filter is bone dry as if oil disappeared many hours before. Not a drip. From filter. This means you are starting car in morning and oil pump has to fill oil housing first. So oil feed delay. And no its not oil filter bad stem o rings. The oil drains back down feed side. Ok changing chain and tensioner shuts it up for a limited time. Yes. But if you ignore route cause. Failure soon returns. So do it remove your filter. Before a first morning start. If your filter is bone dry and has no sign of oil immersion seconds before. You have a drain back issue. As yet im not exactly sure why. But my focus is on cap on side of oil cooler manifold. Pull it out its got long stem with spring loaded Pointed end. Some say its a oil cooler thermostat. Others say oil pressure regulator. But its directly in feed supply line to oil filter housing and looks more like a one way anti run back valve. I own a b class. 60000 miles. Merc genuine oil n filter change 3 times a year. Not exactly under maintained. ! But chain rattle cold start. 3 seconds then silence all day. I remove oil filter stem place in cup filled with oil. Fit cap. Cold start total silence !!

@@samsonacc8081 No obviously not ! but it proved. Oil drain back overnight is my cause of cold rattle. Empty oil housing. Delay in oil pressure feed to hydraulic chain tensioner. I have made a simple silicone disc that fits in bottom of oil filter housing. Lets oil past under pressure. Then when engine off Stops run back drain. And it works perfect. No cold start rattle. Ok ive removed it for now. Till i get more info on suitable silicone material and refine design. But what im saying is. If your oil filter is full at cold start. No oil feed delay. Not allways the answer to every chain tensioner / chain failure. Some are high miles poor service fails. But id say a lot are also dry start filter cold starts. That can also accelerate fail. This video yes shows a poorly maintained car yes. Chain does rattle. But ask yourself this. Why does it stop rattling. After a few seconds. Also it shows slack chain between top pulleys. But if engine is stopped and tensioner is pushed home due to being empty. The left hand cam might be pulling hard clockwise due to cam position and thats why slack. Showing between pulleys Has anybody actually measured just how much these supposedly stretched chains have actually stretched.

Yes, it would have cost more, but it will costs even more when it goes, all will have to opened up again.
Those engines have the water pump on the front of the engine driven from the auxialiary belt, so no need to change it when changing the timing chain.

Then i just worked on a Suzuki outboard engine with the chain basically in the same location.
From an engineers perspective it's actually the best location for the timing chain. Much less vibrations (hence less wear) and due to the fact that it's a very short chain, there is also much less wear.
Unfortunately the bookkeeper took the remaining minimum required strength as an advise and decided a little cheaper would still work...
