    Watch how I become a cheetah sandwich ;0 This is the long version of a clip I posted on my Facebook page awhile back and decided to expand and show some context about it. Stars Eden and Faith; two very special loving cheetahs. Not all are like these two, so don't get the idea you can just lay down inside a cheetah enclosure and expect this to happen.
    I have to take cautionary measures myself with them and discuss this briefly near the end of the video. Faith has a habit of biting and Eden can get an attitude sometimes as well. They can't speak English but they communicate with you by their own body language and it's mostly posturing, facial expressions, and voice vocalization (grunts growls, chirps and groans). Point is, they can get annoyed and if you don't read their behavior, it's 10X worse than a house cat when swatting, biting, or scratching you. They even play ruff sometimes and damage you because their claws always stick out. I've trampled on by Eden at 40MPH while I was sleeping in their enclosure one morning. They will use you in their cheetah games they play.
    CHEETAHS DON'T MAKE GOOD PETS. Someone suggested I mention that fact. Not only because it is an endangered species, but they need VERY special care; way beyond a common house cat. Their health can deteriorate due to many factors to include nutrition, genetic inferiority, boredom, stress, and loneliness. They get moody like a cat and will hurt you.
    Dedicated researchers and scientists have spent decades studying them and ever changing their handling and care for cheetahs. For instance, recently they discovered captive cheetahs need more fatty acids in their diets because they were not getting it from game animals by not eating the organs and skin of wild game. Captive cheetahs are getting processed chicken (an unnatural diet) that is skinned and the organs removed. That causes all kinds of health problems from skin, eyes, kidneys, and mental health. The need constant care and observation and their health can deteriorate quickly.

      Thanks for watching and commenting. It is an amazing experience and why I go back (day and night) again and again. Some people think its dangerous, and in a certain sense it is with certain individuals, like Faith who likes to love bite to damage, but you can teach them what not to do.... just like they have rules, so do I. The most important is for Faith not to bite me. I react crazy when I feel her mouth open and after awhile she learns I don't want her grabbing me. After a few days and nights interacting with her, she no longer tries and we both relax.

God bless you for taking such good care of them while you are there. 😻💜

      Male cheetahs and mothers with cubs tend to be famliy oriented and semi-social. Once the cubs reach near maturity, the mother leaves them and the males and female cubs go their separate ways. Males can form coalitions of other males, but females are solitary.
      I do think these cheetahs see me as their mother. They do all the same things a cub would do. Nibble, purr, suckle, groom and want to be next to you and rub their cheeks against yours. Staff and volunteers are seen as the mother that never left them in the wild.

      These two are fairly safe, except for Faith who love bite to damage, but once you teach her not to bite, she is trustworthy. Just have to leave behind any plastic, toys, watches, no bunned up hair and she will relax with you. Eden can be trusted 100% if you respect her. Thx for watching.

      That's why i learned to set the bed, take my position and not relent... but these big cats pile on and end up moving you anyway... i don't dare push them around. I pretend to be a cheetah and then gently step back into place like they do. it works.

      Your Welcome Dolph I love animals Esp Cats of all types, I have noticed with my Herd of Cats you can start with that determination of claiming your part of the bed BUt they have a way of worming in on it Like sitting across your legs , after a time you just slide them apart to get a bit more comfortable and they slide in and you either end up with legs wide apart or having to move one of the legs around the cat to get more room , The cat wins yet again

    • @CheetahWhisperer
      @CheetahWhisperer  7 років тому +1

      Thanks. It is totally rewarding. I trust these two about 99.9% with Eden and 95% with Faith. But never for them to become aggressive with me and I can totally relax with them. Faith tends to like love and play bite sometimes and I have to watch out for her and just keep away from her mouth for about 10 minutes until she settles down... then I can wrap my arms around her for the night as well. It's not hard to avoid her... she is terribly handicapped and not that strong so I just play keep away :) She is not always like that as well. Maybe 2 times out of 20 encounters.

      Cats purrs have healing properties to them and one reason they purr. They purr when in pain and not just because they are content. It is a very relaxing sound and vibration and intended to ease tentions. The cat is letting you know their intentions are friendly.

      Glad you liked the video. It is unbelievable. I was blown away by cheetah temperament when I 1st met them. I no longer fear cheetahs, even the mean ones. They are just afraid and will bluster, spit, slap the ground, whine, and growl but if you show dominance, they will never attack. They are not designed to fight and thus mostly non-aggressive and easily won over by love and affection but it's best to begin at an early age, like under 9 weeks to build a friendly relationship with them. It can last a lifetime.

      This video happened way before that... just saying you could include that info about the endangerment and population collapse of these important insects. Maybe help the children respect them more and not 'bee' so afraid and not stomp them like I did as a kid before I knew how great bees were.

    Are you familiar with the books written by the Englishman Gerald Durrell ? He established a zoo on Jersey and his writings were beloved by a generation. He writes about the necessity of carnivores eating the whole animal and as well supplementary nutition. Not all would agree with his animal collecting but captive breeding of endangered animals was something he helped establish. His story of the Pėre David deer of China is a classic tale of fragility.

    • @CheetahWhisperer
      @CheetahWhisperer  6 років тому +1

      I'll check it out. In South Africa, studies comparing wild and captive cheetahs has determined diet is the most important key to their health. Matching what , when, and how they eat contributes to health. There are many other factors that affect captive cheetah health to include stress, enclosure size, shelter, water, cleanliness, boredom. I'm collecting data so I can provide better care for my cheetahs when I setup a captive breeding program for them.

      Dolph C. Volker Hello again. www.durrell.org Called the Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust. He tried to specialize in endangered small mammals from all over the world. His widow is Lee Durrell . If she is still active in the organization you may wish to try to contact her ,but no doubt others who work at the zoo are just as knowledgeable with their records. I do believe their outreach programs are heavily based on providing information about such things as diet,other details making long term care of animals so that you do not have to experiment as they did.

    Is the cheetah's fur soft like a house cat's? Or is it rough

    • @CheetahWhisperer
      @CheetahWhisperer  7 років тому +58

      I'll do a full 'touch-test' and report on a cheetah one day, using one of these friendly cooperative cheetahs I know. basically, they are NOT soft like a house cat, leopard,or tiger. Overall much more coarse, like a ruff haired dog. In the winter, they fluff up and softer. In summer they shed and sleeker. But their heads, neck, tummy/chest guard hairs are very coarse. Sides are sleek. It also depends on genetics because cheetahs with much larger black spots are softer because the black hairs are finer.
      Because cheetah fur is not soft, poachers and hunters have not sought after them for their skins, which is good.

      While I sorta figured that tiger/leopard fur might be soft it's good to have that confirmation, certainly makes something like a Siberian's winter coat all the more impressive but then given the weather it's not a surprising adaptation.

      AmurTiger I just watch some cool videos on Siberian Linx. They are gorgeous and unfortunately become targets of poachers and hunters who make fur coats.
      To adopt a cat is so much better because you can feel the Majestic coat anytime without harming environment. Plus they are loyal friends for life!

      Eurasian Lynx are very pretty cats, no doubt about it.
      Personally I'm not about to adopt an exotic any time soon since I think it's not legal in my province and funds that could be spent on an adopted cat could be spent on trying to protect wild endangered cats, the Siberian Tiger in particular.

      Zero worry with these two cheetahs who love people and EXPECT to sleep with you if you spend nights in their enclosure. They are more like dogs.

    How can you tell them apart? So glad these cheetahs are in a safe sanctuary where they are protected.

      Faith is handicapped with a curly tail and walks funny and a bit smaller. Eden is a supurb athlete as cheetahs go and her purr sounds way different. Facial features as well.

      Hahaha. So true about the consequences of agitaged cheetahs vs Cats. I've been swatted before and even bitten by cheetahs and it's 10X worse than a cat, although my neighbors 8lb cat injured me more than these two cheetahs ever have. Had to get rabies shots because it was feral. I did NOTHING to deserve it, it just walked by friendly, I petted it's head and then bit my finger and ran... the lil bugger.
