I love when I know the answer to a question before it's asked. Do cheetahs prefer cold concrete or warm blankets and company?
These captive cheetahs were bred and born at cheetah breeding centers in South Africa; one at Cheetah Experience. All are quite tame as they are groomed for the breeding program so when they have cubs, they can be monitored closely. An accepting and approachable mother allows that. There is a plan to release one of these cheetahs into a protected wild in the near future.
I was granted special permission to spend my nights with the three because I had watched them grow up and built up a relationship with them during past volunteering.
It is natural for a family or friends of animals living together to share warmth. It is a survival behavior that is innate. In our human survival schools, we are taught to huddle together if lost in the wilderness; conserving heat by sharing warmth. They recommend you do it without clothing because fabric acts like an insulator and you don't get the maximum efficiency of heat transfer to your body.
I think it is really cool these cheetahs trust and like me enough to share their most vulnerable time at night to snuggle, purr, and share their warmth and sleep with me. It is an extraordinarily rewarding feeling.
I don't get much sleep due to the constant getting up, readjusting, and laying back down. Cheetahs are very skittish and wake up at the slightest sound or vibrations, so I don't get much sleep, but I don't do this to get rest but to experience something quite unique and special. I don't sleep with these cats, they sleep with me. They come to me which makes it more special. They enjoy the company almost as much as I do.
There is a cameo visit from Lucas the Jumping Spider at 01:45. Even spiders enjoy warm blankets, pillows and good company. Who doesn't?

Cheetahs actually aren't big cats because they can't roar 🙂
Cheetahs are delicate so they don't really hunt large animals the way some other large cats do. Would not snuggle with lions, tigers, or jaguars.

If they don't actually kill you, this looks like the most relaxing thing ever. Imagine sleeping with a team of 100-pound ruthless killers who could take down any person that threatened you but who also are the equivalent of giant warm fuzzy body pillows.

This was special. It REALLY shows the true nature of cheetahs at night. Nothing about this is trained, staged or fake. I enjoy showing the other side of predators people and documentaries never get to show or choose not to. Glad you enjoyed the video. I do too and watch it sometimes.

We're also predators, and cheetahs don't want any of this smoke... which is good because while Cheetahs may be dangerous predators, like us, they're also timid and friend-shaped.
Also, fun fact, Cheetahs have dull, non-retractable claws and a bite only about 1/3 as powerful as a Leopard. They're generally incredibly anxious animals (relatable) and sometimes in captivity they get emotional support dogs. Fascinating creatures.
Mammal predators doesn't want to eat human flesh since it wasn't as appetizing as other meat unless they're starving to death and has no prey to hunt and eat other than human

@034bloodas I know... Neo, her name, had some blanket. She also is sometimes 1st to the blankets as I've done this many times before. They all have grass to lay on or even hay with heated tile floor inside another cheetah house but they prefer this high treehouse platform.

From the countless videos I watched, I got the impression that cheetahs are even friendlier than domestic cats. It's unexpected but still welcome.
It's true and I find cheetahs are more complex than domesticated house cats. For one they have an amazing repertoire of voice and sounds they make. From chirping birds high pitched sounds to low rumbling growls to the nice loud vibrating purrs. And they love lick lick licking you.

For sure... wish I was an insomniac so I could just watch and pet them all night. Cheetahs sleep at most for 20min then wake up. Survival trait to keep alert to dangers like lions and leopards which are active at night.

@@CheetahWhisperer It's annoying. Cause it's true. And God forbid you don't wake up when they want you to. They'll make sure your butt is awake. My mom used to have to kick her cat out of the room cause he would try to knock the lamp over, paw her face, knock down his water cup, anything. Then he'd sit outside the door and cry until she woke up. Eventually my mom stopped caving and wore earplugs but that turd was obnoxious... He's a little better now but my mom no longer keeps cups of water 🤣

I have fifteen cats, and a number of them take turns to sleep with me at night. Nothing beats it!
That one cheetah snuggled in his arms is like me and my kitteh boi. Cheetahs are my favorite wild animal, and I would happily go sleepless to spend the night with them.

I have a female cat that straddles your forearm at night. She persistently tries to line her entire body up on the small space of my forearm, digs her claws in to hold herself in place.. and bites softly of you try to move it away?? Do yours do anything like that?

They are actually quite nice to most everybody. It is the nature of non aggressive cheetahs.
They purr out of stress, in this case the rain, but also because they're frinedly.
Purring does not necessarily equal trust. Cats that can purr, do so for many reasons.

I've watched this video a few times, and I'm just blown away by the mutual trust between you and this coalition. The leader resting fully on your chest and neck is an incredible show of trust from both parties and I can say with certainty that they see you as one of their own. These cats are amazing. My favorite video. Nighttime for cheetahs is extremely peaceful. They want to snuggle, keep warm and enjoy company of those they like. Cheetahs don't hardly ever hunt at night. Very rare so they want to sleep peacefully.

Yeah! They are lessor cats and why. Smaller and not top cat so they have to be nicer, run away from larger predators and not fight or they would die. So made them skittish and more non aggressive.

Yep... I've seen that as well. Thought the same thing. Was terrified when I met my 1st cheetah face to face and realized they all have minds that function outside instincts too.
I know this is also incredibly dangerous and that this man has gotten to know these creatures and learned how to interact safely with them...
But I have never been more jealous in my life.

Cheetahs are one of the less dangerous big cats. They are too nervous to do much. They are still dangerous of course but more likely to run away.

An absolute madlad. Not only does he snuggle with cheetahs but he responds to comments 2 years after he video has been posted. On a side note, I've always been obsessed with cheetahs and wild cats in general but I doubt I'd ever get to actually touch one.
Yes... I discovered cheetahs to be a non aggressive and decent temperamental cat very similar to house cats. That makes them very easy to work with to help save as a species in a captive reproductive and release project and why I was there.

It's crazy. Cheetahs sleep no more than 20min uninterrupted. Mostly less. Anything wakes them.

@@dublewr2194 It is mostly the nature of the cheetah. They are considered non aggressive, much like most all lesser cats. These were hand raised and tamed so making friends with them is much easier. Takes some work and effort, but always love and respect with positive interactions, playing, feeding, and time will win them over rather quickly. Only a few weeks a year for me, but someone else raised them.

Kitties are not all night sleepers. They constantly get up move around and go back to sleep…. On your head.
The cats are trying to help us compensate for not wearing nightcaps to bed anymore. Nothing keeps the human head warmer than cat ass.
They are very cute. Light sleepers so they are aware of danger.
I would want this experience 100%. Another thing on the bucket list (that probably will never be fulfilled).

Imagine a cheetah curling up next to you for a nappy nap. That guy is so lucky. I know they trust him but that must be a dream. Just a bunch of big cats warming you up and knowing if anybody comes to mess with you in the middle of the night, they got your back. PLUS, the patterns make you look stylish.

Cheetahs getting up in the middle of the night to readjust makes a ton of sense when you consider how cheetahs can be anxious creatures. Like in capitivity they're given dog companions to adjust enough to later bond with potential mates.
Any one with anxiety can probably vouch when I say when the anxiety is hitting you need to readjust a lot at night. Some behaviours under similar psychological conditions seem to have strikingly similar patterns across various the animal kingdom including with us humans.

just like house cats, they change sleeping positions a lot.
It's funny! Cats and dogs sleep lightly to alert then to dangers and survive, especially cats. They are hunted and hunting depending on their sizes. Have to be awake, alert, and wake up easy to live.
Being warm and comfy is no more or no less about survival than it is for us. Which really means, we like blankets because it's a good survival strategy.
