Watch Ron Paul's Farewell Address!

  • On November 14, 2012, retiring Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) gave his farewell speech to Congress.
In a public career that included three stints in Congress (1976-1977; 1979-1985; and 1997-present) and a run for president as the Libertarian Candidate (1988), no living elected official has done more to advance the ideals of limited government and a libertarian approach to federal government.
His longshot bids for the Republican presidential nomination in 2008 and 2012 radically altered the national conversation on entitlements, fiscal and monetary policy, foreign policy, and crony capitalism, and his success with online fundraising and organization has set the example that others will be following for years to come. The groups he has created, including Young Americans for Liberty and Campaign for Liberty, will continue to grow in size and influence.
Paul used his final address in the House of Representatives to draw attention to growing violations of civil liberties, a chronic economic crisis brought on out-of-control government spending and debt, the ease with which the country goes to (undeclared) war, and the immoral willingness to use violence to achieve desired social ends.
As Paul's biographer, Reason staffer Brian Doherty, noted, Ron Paul is "a true American original. No politician talks like this, and I suspect it will be a long time before another does. Ideas like this will be much harder to find in the House of Representatives with Paul gone, and we will all be the poorer for it."
Go to reason.com/tags/ron-paul for Reason's coverage of the congressman known as "Dr. No" for his refusal to sanction legislation the he felt was not authorized by the U.S. Constitution.
Produced by Zach Weissmueller, text by Nick Gillespie. About 50 minutes.

I'm 36 now, I was in my early 20s when Ron Paul made his name known. I was always independent and, at that time, identified more Libertarian than liberal. While I have shifted to be a bit more liberal on my social policy views, as far as my overall politics, I still admire Ron Paul very much. He transcended party lines and spoke to Americans, not parties. I supported Bernie and I think they have more in common than not. Economic policy be damned, they both care for the soul of our nation and can agree to disagree like gentlemen. I ways wonder what things would have looked like now if Ron Paul would have won.

I liked Ron Paul during this election but this made him a much better person in my eyes then before. That is because he understands that the battle that needs to be fought is not a political battle, but a moral battle. It is not about a smoking gun that wipes away statist government, but a large educational campaign to teach people about the evil of physical force and the principles of a free society. As he said only a moral and virtuous people can live with and will demand limited government.

Ron Paul was the most brilliant person I ever followed other than Regan and Candace Owens. The media had a HUSH order on Ron Paul. He was totally black balled by the media, sigh, VERY SAD.

This will forever be my inspiration. He is still the only presidential candidate I've ever campaigned for, when I was in high school and college. 🤷‍♂️ Love you Dr. Paul and thank you for everything you tried to accomplish and stand for.

"If I were in Congress in 1996, I would have voted for the Defense of Marriage Act, which used Congress's constitutional authority to define what official state documents other states have to recognize...to ensure that no state would be forced to recognize a “same sex” marriage license issued in another state. If I were a member of the Texas legislature, I would do all I could to oppose any attempt...to impose a new definition of marriage on the people of my state."

Ron Paul never had a chance of winning or getting much accomplished and he knew it. You can't take on the gov and the military-industrial complex and expect to be president. But what he DID do was get the word out, like he wanted. And people DID listen. People DID support him. Libertarian votes have been very high as shown in the last election with Gary Johnson. Change takes time, and Ron Paul did his part to get us there. May more like him come.

then Gary did better then Jorgensen tanked the party. I love the LP but if we can't get our act together America is doomed to authoritarianism, and we aren't doing a great job right now.
