Guys, he was playing a damn near acoustic show, he was making everything different, stop worrying about the tone being the exact same, it wasn't even the same as the album live back when they first toured it, sheesh.
I've heard many of Gilmour's solos to this song that he has played live. The one thing that all of the solos have in common is that not one solo is played the same live. So many guitarists now a days don't tune into their soul, it's all about hitting the same note because that's what the people want to hear. It looks like Gilmour doesn't care what we hear, and that's what makes him incredible.
Honestly, I LOVE the tone on this. No, it doesn’t have that singing, soaring sustain of other performances, but if Dave wanted that, he would have gotten it. The snap of the string attack has such a lovely sound; not un-like a good Telecaster, but with it’s own flavor. Someone else here referred to it as a “grunt”; I like that analogy.
i just "love" it when people judge musicians like david gilmour...when i saw the thumbnail of the video i thought "oh,he's got the wrong guitar, what happened",but when you listen to him play...especially if you have played a bit yourself...you know...all you can do is be thankfull that you have the chance to listen to somebody that has the talent to give some of his life to an instrument made of wood and metal,so that he can communicate with us through it...respect...
I've never played one, but I imagine it's a really fun guitar to play. I feel as if I'm listening to the song in a different language. I wouldn't want to go back in time and convince him to use a Gretsch on the studio version, but this makes for a very nice variation on an all-too-familiar solo. Yeah, I said it: I get tired of "Comfortably Numb" sometimes. And if a fan can get tired of it, imagine how HE feels!
I think this is a brilliant version of this solo and the gretsch offers a clean jazzy and blues like sound yes it's tone is a dirty big muff style sound but this is different and a change can be good. Can't it? No, I think the gretsch did good in this situation
+Barry McAllister it's good not only from change perspective but also good for making observation, especially his bends and vibratos are much more clearer here and also those small nook and cranny sounds that make his playing so unique and toneful. This video is a goldmine for any guitarists who aspire to play like him, anyone who complains about that gretsch should open their mind.
I WAS a teenager in the 70's... Saw em at Cleveland Municipal Stadium in the late 70's, around when "Animals" was released.... A split second before the first note was played, a very low flying jet pierced the sky and did a fly over and i a flash the band began to jam... It set the tone for a GREAT CONCERT !
My all time favorite solo of comfortably numb is on the PULSE DVD... it is abselutley mind blowingly amazing!!! if you love guitar... that solo will leave you with goose bumps... 4 minutes of just pure beautiful guitar love...
the man is a genious makes guitar playing look simple the way he plays , very clever and still going strong , alltime legends people will still be listening to the floyd in another 1000 years.
Tone sounds more bluesy with this guitar but when he plays it with the fender + FX it is phenomenal, especially the intro, just fucking wow. It's like all your emotions just twirl in to that single note. Definitely Gilmour's masterpiece.
The fact that I have a big passion for this kind of music (and others) is why I'm interested in both the technical and musical stuff. If you're not interested in the technical stuff you'll be the kind of person( and i suspect you are) who puts 6 strings in a broom, and while covering a song you say : 'yeah this sounds like the real thing!'!
The Gretsch was one of the few guitars he held onto when he auctioned most of his collection for charity. He says it's more difficult to play than a Strat. As the owner of two Jets, I can confirm access to the highest frets is quite tricky due to the large neck joint. The ones with Filtertrons do sound fantastic, though.
I see your point BUT this concert was totally different in all aspects. It was more intimate, more quiet. If I compare this to the 80's ones when he was freaking electric and amazing, this is just as peacefull as great too. I love it because you can see how versatile he is by choosing the mood and tempo of the songs. You have lots of this solo in a "crazy" mood, this is appreciated because it's soft, short and perfect. You go to sleep with this. With the others, you get up.
@YearraeY LOL...That "gay dancing" man is Bob Geldorf. He played the role of "Pink" in the the movie "the wall" by pink floyd, sang lots of the parts in the movie. He was also the initiator of Live8, he is is the reason for the standing ovations and the "thank you Bob" that's being said in the end of this little video...
@hubbalol Holy crap. Yes, it's a Gretsch, not a bloody LP. Don't know about you guys but for me correcting a one year comment is a "one time to do thing". But thank you, all the 28 or so guitar geeks. It's a Gretsch, nothing else. :)
They are filtertron pickups, u get them in the duo jet (the guitar David is playing)...and also the electromatic pro jet (usualy silver ,gold, and black )
totally agree....not even closer....the feeling and the sweetness of a strat increase the performance of david.... i dont understand why he played with that brand...well....long life to David ( and more to Roger )....
It was on the movie The Wall. There's is a scene when the final solo for Comfortably Numb starts where Bob starts smashing guitars and goes crazy. I think. I never actually saw the move, but I saw the scene somewhere on here.
Laughing my ass off with these comments on the Gretsch....it could have sounded way dirtier than a strat ever could....if Gilmour had WANTED it to....in the setting of this performance he didn´t....
The power of the pentatonic.
I don't think anyone has ever been able to utilize it as well as Gilmour.
Eric Johnson
i clicked on the video because he was not playing the strat. It made me curious.
Me also
Me too hahaha
Same
The sound is a million miles away from the strat.
Guys, he was playing a damn near acoustic show, he was making everything different, stop worrying about the tone being the exact same, it wasn't even the same as the album live back when they first toured it, sheesh.
Dave could play this on a $10 fisher price Walmart guitar and it would still kick ass.
True. That saying has been kicking around awhile ... I first read it as "he could make a toy ukelele sound like a Stradivarius."
+Sluff Adlin or any broomstick that you could take from one of those harry potter kids
+Sluff Adlin yes, you are right. No matter the instrument.
jack white did in white stripes he played walmart plastic guitar %90 of the time and sounded phenomenal
Doesn't sound so well here
This song and this player will send chills up spines for a hundred years.

If Numb had been on Wish You Were Here, it would've sounded like this. :D
This is, hands down, the best guitar solo of all time. I wish musicians could still do this these days.
i just "love" it when people judge musicians like david gilmour...when i saw the thumbnail of the video i thought "oh,he's got the wrong guitar, what happened",but when you listen to him play...especially if you have played a bit yourself...you know...all you can do is be thankfull that you have the chance to listen to somebody that has the talent to give some of his life to an instrument made of wood and metal,so that he can communicate with us through it...respect...
Obviously the people who knock the Gretsch, never played a Gretsch... Or probably don't know how to play...
+Paul Bresler AAh at last, a good comment. ;)
I currently own 6 guitars. The Gretsch is by far the best!
I swear I’m gonna have a proper Japanese made duo Jet one day. Such a lovely versatile guitar. Neil Finn has made me want one.
I hope to own one next year. Absolutely fantastic guitars.
That's one piece of music I will never get sick of listening to - but ONLY can be played by David.
He is the best but I might suggest listening to Irene Ketikidi's solos which are on YT.
What a great tone to the guitar he has :) Great performance
I think this is a brilliant version of this solo and the gretsch offers a clean jazzy and blues like sound yes it's tone is a dirty big muff style sound but this is different and a change can be good. Can't it?

The reason for live concerts...hearing different interpretations of the artist music. Digging it!
Nice to have a video with such a clear view of David's fingers. Thanks.
wow...brings tears of joy and admiration...guitar gently weeping.
'That Great Gretsch Sound'! Sounds quite different from the 'strat' version, much more grunt and crunch! I like it very much indeed!
Everything in its context -- I seen this concert, absolutely wonderful.
My all time favorite solo of comfortably numb is on the PULSE DVD... it is abselutley mind blowingly amazing!!! if you love guitar... that solo will leave you with goose bumps... 4 minutes of just pure beautiful guitar love...
Great tone from that Gretsch!
Love the Duo Jets
C'est toujours beaucoup trop court quand c'est très bon comme ça ! Merci Monsieur Gilmour . . . .
Oh men this made me shed tears of joy.
the man is a genious makes guitar playing look simple the way he plays , very clever and still going strong , alltime legends people will still be listening to the floyd in another 1000 years.
The one of most beautiful solos on earth!

Thank you very much indeed.Good night.
the best guitar man in the rock !!!
This sound is great for a laid back kind of version of this solo. Which is just as good as an explosive version.
holy shit that little riff right there got him number one spot
best song for ever
when he plays his strat, the heavens sing.
What's not to like? Gilmour is a genial legend!
awesome man!
He looks like a guy who just understands the guitar and music in general, inside and out.
Bravo. Encore.
Super ,dziękuję bardzo ,pozdrawiam ☺
Tone sounds more bluesy with this guitar but when he plays it with the fender + FX it is phenomenal, especially the intro, just fucking wow. It's like all your emotions just twirl in to that single note. Definitely Gilmour's masterpiece.

Excellent!

The only word that come to mind when Gilmour plays 'Comfortably Numb' is Majestic.
Best solo ever! No doubt about that.
Sounds waaaaaaaaay nicer on his strat :-)
Ellis Dee nope.
blankblank all Strats sound the same...a Gretsch is a gift from god. If this was originally recorded on a Gretsch you would say that sounds better...
@@officialWWM i like both but gretsch are my favorite.
Crikey 😢 that’s the first time I have seen David playing this track with his black Gretsch…wow awesome
Not sure I can quantify it, but there is just something magical that happens when the original artist plays his own riffs.
The Gretsch was one of the few guitars he held onto when he auctioned most of his collection for charity. He says it's more difficult to play than a Strat. As the owner of two Jets, I can confirm access to the highest frets is quite tricky due to the large neck joint. The ones with Filtertrons do sound fantastic, though.
the most original guitarist on the Earth
you try find someone else who can replicate the perfection in this solo, with the same equipment he is using, praise the lord for fingers
I see your point BUT this concert was totally different in all aspects. It was more intimate, more quiet. I don't think I've ever seen another guitarist who could bend the strings like Gilmour.
@YearraeY

That guitar sound That everyone is chasing this is it.
da BOMB maaaan, yeah sooo SWEET !
ORGASMICO ¡¡¡¡¡¡ DAVID GILMOUR EL MEJOR.
Gretsch sounds like heaven on the song "Where we start". Listen to it again both the CD and the Gdansk versions.
My hero forever!
@hubbalol

Wow!! David Gilmour with a Gretsch. Like it!!
That will even more godlike!
They are filtertron pickups, u get them in the duo jet (the guitar David is playing)...and also the electromatic pro jet (usualy silver ,gold, and black )
Incredible.....
totally agree....not even closer....the feeling and the sweetness of a strat
increase the performance of david.... i dont understand why he played with that
brand...well....long life to David ( and more to Roger )....
this is a beautiful old man

Can you imagine the level of thrill that he got when he played this the first time in front of the crowd??
You're my man, David...
por dios que grosoo !! idoloo
Genius at work here.
wonderfull !
Он не только певец, поэт и композитор, но ещё и гитарист классный...
Laughing my ass off with these comments on the Gretsch....it could have sounded way dirtier than a strat ever could....if Gilmour had WANTED it to....in the setting of this performance he didn´t....
David still feels every note......
Just as good on his Gretsch as it is on his Strat.
Not a Gibson, it's a Gretch. This man is a Guitar hero, he can play any damn Guitar that he chooses.
Love this version...a bit stripped down from the usual version we all love.
