The Duel Monsters Championship seems to occupy on Lineal Championship rules. Whoever beats the Champion (Legitimately) is the Champion. This is why Joey isn't considered Champion after his technical victory against Yugi, when he was mind controlled and Yugi threw the match to save him. So at this point Rafael was the Duel Monsters World Champion.

Hearing that Yugi has lost a duel, Kaiba explodes (meaning he's going crazy). He's so furious that he can't stand that a rival like Yugi has lost a duel while being the defending champion. He should at least understand that Yugi not only lost a duel, but that he also lost a friend (i.e. little Yûgi).

@@LucarioShirona No, Yami told him explicitly (in the Japanese version anyway) during the Battle City arc during a helicopter ride recap episode. And Japanese Kaiba was always a little less “that’s hocus pocus nonsense” and more “wtf, that’s aweso- I mean, uh, I don’t care”
I always interpreted this as Kaiba freaking out a little and immediately transforming that fear into something more palatable for him to deal with, ie the angry: You LOST??!?
Hearing Joey and Duke laugh about Kaiba in the background makes this my favorite scene in this series. lol

I like how this proves Kaiba care about Pharaoh and have utmost respect to him as a true champion duelist. The time when Pharoah has a rematch with Raphael and Kaiba was watching almost the whole time, Kaiba look worried when Pharoah is gonna take a hit from Eatos celestial sword blast. He even said to himself he was hoping Pharoah to take back his King of Games title (just a prideful talk) so he can be the only one to take it away himself.
Duke’s impression was almost spot on. 🤣
