onmas909 it’s an anime that aired in Japan for six months during 1998. It’s not connected to Yugioh Duel Monsters, but both series are in fact based off the Yugioh manga. So, basically most North American kids never knew of this series because it didn’t air internationally.
This scene is even darker when you find out that the pharaoh can will his deck to give him whatever card he wants. Ishizu explains this during the final duel.
This duel demonstrated how much Atem had come to depend on Yugi being the voice of reason in their relationship. Atem's normally the one coming up with strategies, pulling off magical bullshit, and doing a lot of the heavy lifting in terms of overall dueling. Yugi, on the other hand, is the one who brings compassion, empathy, and a modern-day conscience/moral center. The Pharaoh, without Yugi to ground him, is incredibly ruthless, even more so than Kaiba, and that's to be expected: living during the reign of the Pharaohs in Ancient Egypt, one had to be pretty ruthless to keep their grip on power. Weakness would not be tolerated, and would be quickly swept aside to be replaced by someone who at least appeared to be strong. This mindset was demonstrated during his duel with Kaiba as far back as Duelist Kingdom, where Atem was willing to KILL Kaiba if it meant victory. It was demonstrated when he nearly killed Raphael and relied on the Seal of Orichalcos when he thought he was going to lose the duel. It was demonstrated here, when he overkilled Weevil to the point that he wasted any sort of opportunity he COULD have had to ask Bug Boy about Yugi's whereabouts, instead giving in to his rage and beating what was essentially a corpse until Tea had to forcibly restrain him. People give the Atlantean arc of Yu-Gi-Oh crap for technically being non-canon, as well as some rather glaring plot-holes, but I genuinely believe it ended up being integral to further demonstrating the bond Atem and Yugi shared, and how both of them brought something of great importance to the table in their personal relationship. It also was an eye-opening experience for the rest of the gang, seeing the Pharaoh essentially lose his shit for like a week. It also helped Tea snap out of her fangirling over the Pharaoh, realizing that she'd put him on a pedestal when in reality the person who'd been the kind, caring boy she'd fallen in love with was Yugi. It helped the audience realize how important having a moral center is to a person's character, and the drastic changes that come about if that's suddenly taken away. Overall, good season.
don't forget the incredible focus on Joey ad his development as a duelist in this arc, he even was one of the chosen 3. also on a side note: I cosider the anime and manga having different canons, like this is still canon to the anime, it happened. and Pegasus is still alive in the anime which we also see in gx, in the manga he is dead. another canon difference is KKaiba beig presennt in the ceremonial duel in the anime compared to the manga
I know it's ajoke but Bah, it's not a CCG.... more like Takahashi reinventing Poker stuff I like how in GX there's an epsiode with a Vegas stuff expert, who was actually interested in the YGO card game as a next level challenge.
Well at least in this arc the seal of orichalcos card was like a real life spell, so when they played the card everything within the circle became totally real and players could actually feel pain from monster attacks and such. That's one of the best things about this arc.
@@borreloadsavagedragon Even I thought of that. The Dumbledore thing, ,, Harry, did you put your name in the goblet of fire'' said Dumbledore calmly. You and I having the same thoughts.
Fun fact, Berserker Soul in the tcg is written in a way that allows you to continue the effect even after killing the opponent, so you can mimic this scene with your friends (or hated side characters) 😆

@@seijikamuto3425 Season 0 yugi its the first version of him. In summary, instead of dueling he normally challenged people to russian roulette type games, wich in some ocassions ended up with the other person dying or getting traumatized
I wonder it felt as a kid the first time this aired, seeing yugi basically otk and then seeing him keep going after the LP reached 0. Fucking incredible storytelling
I remember when first watching it it was a pretty nerve racking battle. Weavil had Yugi on the ropes the entire game, and his Legendary Dragon card had failed to obey him, which in the parallel duel between Joey and Rex is what let Joey win. Yugi had like a tiny amount of life points left and if he'd even ended his turn without winning some auto effect would have finished him off.
I grew up watching the Dub, but even in that translation, the anger the Pharaoh felt in that moment seemed totally justified in my mind. It seemed scary after the first two attacks that won him the duel, but I understood. He was pissed and Haga (or Weevil), was a dick for pulling that card stunt.
Weevil forced the monster card “Poison Butterfly” into Yami Yugi’s control. Poison Butterfly does 500 points of effect damage to its owner every turn, and Weevil kept Poison Butterfly from attacking him by using a spell card that keeps opponents from attacking with insect type monsters.
@@japanimerica8686 It only really toned down after Duelist Kingdom. More accurately after he basically hanged PaniK. After that Yami and Yugi communicated more and more so Yami toned down because he couldn't take what that did to Yugi. This is Yami without Yugi and we see how much they influence each other.
One thing that makes me think is that Yugi has a powerful bond with his deck, so he treats each monster in it as a true partner. But in this scene, he's so crazy and furious that he's just sending every single monster to the graveyard without even thinking just to continue destroying Haga.
The one line from the English translation that still kills me is, "This just isn't your day..." And mind you, this is at least four monster cards into his attack.
what i like about yugi's decks the most is that he is full of shitty weak monster cards but he comes up with approaches and strategies that make them all count to victory. very humble, very democratic, very noble
He does appear again in the KC Grand Prix arc. Meaning he can survive without a soul in the desert and find his way back on his own... Makes him a pretty badass character when you think about it.
*Reveals Berserker soul* *Look of pure horror clearly saying "It was this moment he knew......he fucked up"* First draw: This is for Exodia! Second draw: This is for my partner! Third Draw: This is because I hate you! Fourth and onward: This is because I can!!
I’d like to imagine that berserker soul and the spells he had already drawn were the only non-monster cards in the deck, and Yami Yugi fully intended to attack him several dozen times before he was interrupted
Looking back at this season. It was the season that brought to the surface the dark side of these dualists. This dual in particular shows just how ruthless Atem can be without Yugi's good nature to balance him out. The same with Weevil, he's a mean and dishonest person and under the spell of the seal of oracalcos amplified that.
That line was so freaking dark. You could tell he was enjoying kicking the shit out of Weevil. Dan Green really sold Atem. Edit: my phone is a prude and won’t spell shit.
I think the most fucked up thing about this scene is the fact that, unlike in the English version of the anime, the monsters attacks in the Japanese version actually inflict pain. Now with that in mind, understand that the millennium puzzle has an effect on the wearer to boost their luck in any game. In some cases the puzzle allows the wearer to actually manifest the card they need to draw at that moment. (it's a thing, look it up.) So, It is very likely that Atem would've drawn literally every monster card left in his deck, therefore attacking Weville again and again and again before finally hitting a trap or spell.... Big oof.
And with the rules of the game as they are for this match, that agony would be Wevile's final moments before what he presumes to be his death. Fun for the whole family.
Where does that boosting luck stuff comes from? Is it from the dub? I remember the Pharaoh being able to alter his destiny with his willpower alone, but it wasn't stated it had anything to do with the Millennium Puzzle. Just asking, I've seen similar comments before
Something I feel a lot of people forget is when the Orichalcos is on the field or its a Dark duel, the monsters are real. So Breaker was actually dealing Weevil physical pain.
@@Empathy_AUS The real life card allows you draw up to 8 cards consecutively, and the chain ends when you draw a spell or trap card. The card that was just drawn goes back to the top of the deck.
Actually, this is undoubtedly the reason why they eventually gave Breaker The Magical Warrior 1600 attack points instead of 1500, so that people wouldn't start abusing it with Berserker Soul to beat the opponent to death and take their soul away.
When even the Seal of Orichalcos says "Haga deserves this." I love how after the third card, Yami's not even looking at it cuz he knows what card he drew.
If Season 0 Yami was here: *Yami calmly takes of duel disk* Weevil:Oh? Are you giving up over your friend? How pathet- *Yami Walks to Breaker and calmly takes Sword* Weevil:Uh Wha- Yami:MONSTA KAAAADDOOOOO *Proceeds to stab Weevil and throw him of the train*
@@MarcosAlexandre-no3qx no hed have bugs tear out of weevil like the spiders in the mist, bursting through his eyes and tearing away his face as the poor fucker screeched in agony.
And for those who doesn't understand why Atem keeps drawing monster cards: Atem has the power to manipulate the destiny in his favor. That's his power and his curse. He is destined to win every single match because that is his curse. Only two guys actually defeated Atem and breaks his curse: Rafael and Yugi. Yugi is the strongest duelist in the Yu-Gi-Oh series. He was the only one, in the canon series, capable of defeat the pharaoh with his full powers. Most of the fandom understimate Yugi's dueling skills but he is very good. I love how in the DSOD movie they make that perfectly clear with his duel against Kaiba.
Basically heart of the cards allows Atem to draw whatever card he wanted/needed, this man knew he still had several monsters in his deck and could have kept attacking until he ran out of cards

Everyone was talking about it at school.
He's pretty savage 🤣
When Atem was close to his original Season 0 self...
Can we admit that it was dark as shit in the manga
@@japanimerica8686 It only really toned down after Duelist Kingdom. More accurately after he basically hanged PaniK. After that Yami and Yugi communicated more and more so Yami toned down because he couldn't take what that did to Yugi.
This is Yami without Yugi and we see how much they influence each other.
One thing that makes me think is that Yugi has a powerful bond with his deck, so he treats each monster in it as a true partner. But in this scene, he's so crazy and furious that he's just sending every single monster to the graveyard without even thinking just to continue destroying Haga.

But c’mon, the little cockroach had it coming once he pulled that trick on the pharaoh.
He also threw away exodia. So yeah.
Ninetails2000 still deserves it
Where does that boosting luck stuff comes from? Is it from the dub? I remember the Pharaoh being able to alter his destiny with his willpower alone, but it wasn't stated it had anything to do with the Millennium Puzzle. Just asking, I've seen similar comments before
When you know that Yugi can draw any card he want to, it just hit different
