"Milestones & Landmarks in the lives of people"....Can it actually be said any better? Mr. Knopfler nails it! Thank-you sir for the moments in time your music takes me back to
Yes - exactly. I was under a car doing an oil change when I first heard Sultans. The local record shop looked up their released LPs - and we were all surprised to find there were already 2 or 3 ..... I picked one and ordered it. Eventually they we saw them live at the Wembly Arena.
every single song is written in a key, so yes he can make any random notes in the key of d minor sound like this song. it does take a lot of knowledge to know the scales of said key and incorporate them into a song
I love in one video how he talks about when he picked up a certain guitar the first time and Romeo and Juliet just fell out. Like there just wasn’t a choice
Way back in 1976 myself and a friend found ourselves in the Old Covent Garden in London wandering around the various bars and pubs there. Early in the evening we came by the Rock Garden Bar/Restaurant/Club where there was a bunch of guys unloading instruments from an old van. We didn't take much notice at the time but as we passed the Rock Garden on our way back a couple of hours later we could hear this interesting music coming up from the basement. We stood there for a minute or two before paying our entrance fee and we spent the rest of the evening watching this band called Dire Straights. They were brilliant. You could tell they were a band destined to go places. That was one of those nights where you unexpectedly encounter something a bit special. I've seen Dire Straights a number of times since and they have put on some of the best concerts I've seen (and I've seen a few). They never let you down. Mark Knopfler just gets better and better. Almost 50 years later I'm still listening and I have to say thanks for the music Mark.
you can't help but love a virtuoso who still has so much respect for his audience that he gives us familiar touchpoints while also exercising his brilliance...he often talks about circular moments in his life, but I wonder if he knows how many of this he provides his audience. Listening to those familiar notes always takes me back to another time in my life...a time I'll always treasure.
I am glad to be one of them who had these songs as milestones in my life.. Thank you so much for giving the world such a wonderful memorable music. Don't think these songs will ever fade...

He came to South Africa years ago, and I saw him. An intimate kind of show in a smallish theater. One song he just put a simple stool on the stage, only him, jamming away. I can't even remember the song, but I remember the feeling, the skill he had, everything he could do with that one guitar in that moment. It felt like this was a case where a person was doing the exact thing "the universe wanted him to do".

This man is insanely good. His music is beautiful and lilting, almost hypnotic. I went to a dire straits concert and was relatively close to the stage and he plays effortlessly. Beauty in motion.
This guy is the real G.O.A.T. in my opinion. I'm a mediocre guitar player at best but I know genius when I see it. I could sit and just watch him play for days and I learn things constantly.
What a wonderfully well spoken guy. Love the comment about iconic songs like “Sultans” - that the song is a milestone/ icon in many peoples’ lives and the player/ writer needs to respect that.
Sultans of Swing will always be apart of my heart..My best friend and I used to jam on this song so much..it touched us both in a way I don’t understand but it connected us..he passed away two years ago and every time I hear this song until I die I will always think of and remember Tristan Price and the good times we shared! Music is everything!
Every time, when I start my car engine, this was the very first song played, it’s been 10 years. Now, I just bought my Model3, this is first song since I had my M3. LOVE IT. Thanks for creating amazingly beautiful songs.
He's right, songs (and bits of songs) are what people have grown up with and landmarked for generations, and that solo in SofS takes me straight back to when I first heard it!
It was and still is one of my all time favourite songs for more then 40 years all the way back during my early high school years till now. This song has been with me through good times and bad times and it was always one of the first songs when making a compilation initially on the microcassette though CD, MP3, Ipod. Good music never dies, never gets old and never gets boring. Thank you!
One of the pinnacle songs for guitarists to learn. Just look at the number of covers on UA-cam. When it first came out the big questions was, "How is he playing like that?". Before UA-cam, before MTV, we could only listen to the album and unless we saw Dire Straits in concert or on television Mark's technique was baffling to a great number of amateur guitar players. It was so joyous, so brilliant, so fast and amazing we could only take the ride and enjoy the mystery. Mark, thanks for "Sultans" and all your other great songs over the years.
That is really such an amazing song. And you are absolutely correct about these songs that are landmarks sorta speak milestones. Remembering back when I quit doing drugs and decided to put my life back together. I had an interview for a food server/waiter position at a well known steakhouse in Las Vegas Nevada. And when they told me that I had got the job and when I could start, it was the greatest feeling. After being homeless and addicted to crystal meth on the streets of Vegas getting that job gave me such a massive sense of accomplishment and an overwhelming very emotional wave of gratuity filled my entire existence. It’s a little bit difficult to explain. Anyway that song “sultans of swing” was on my phone In a playlist that I had created. I put on my headphones at the bus stop right outside of my new place of work and that song was the first song to play. And I had never listened to that song as attentively before. Just the guitar and the rhythm and flow of the song coupled with the soul and good good vibes that the guitar solo and riffs create just went so so well with the feeling of victory and accomplishment that I was already experiencing. And that there is a major landmark in my life. Sultans of swing signify when I took my life back and knew that I was going to make it and that I was going to be ok and still had a lot of life to live in front of me. Which is something I had given up hope for years before. It was redemption victorious and what I would think love would feel like if love were to be a feeling that’s how it would feel in my opinion. Thank you for writing this song and keeping the original elements and feeling to it. This song is a part of me and it is a part of my soul forever. I am extremely grateful that you created such a legendary and epic song. Sir you are the man...!
Oh Mark every time you play that guitar you melt my heart, thanks for the wonderful songs down the years. Saw you live in the 1990's front seats didn't want to leave the arena you were so good. x
literally grew up with this song, a radio staple when I was a kid. Fell asleep listening to it many times. Wicked good song! Never loses its appeal, just gets better with age. One of my fave guitar solo bits at the end, brilliant.
The first time i listened this legendary sound, i was playing “driver” from ps1. Was 2002 i had 11 years old. My sister put this song and i stayed in extasy, i dreaming to play this song one day!!! Today i’m a amateur guitarrist and i can say that i learned to play this song and it is the song that i love more to play with my band!! Thank you, Mark!! Sorry about my english!!
I was 16 when I first heard this song. It made me want to runaway somewhere. Such fabulous sound. Now I'm 52 I'm daring to play it and it's got a whole new perspective. Love this video of you in your element. Love that you play guitar for life! I'm taking my guitar to the nursing home for sure! Thanks for the fabulous music.
Making Movies STILL ranks in my top 5 albums of all time. Every time i listen it takes me back to being a teenager with not a care in the world. Mark Knopfler is a virtuoso.
I was 13 when my life in music permanently changed. From mainstream pop, I was introduced to this song with a crazy simple rhythm section and a crazy complex yet simple solo that would ring in my head for the next 25 years everytime I would look for inspiration in music, and inspiration later on in writing music. That song is Sultans of Swing. It is a landmark of a song in my life because it was the song that laid the foundation for my journey into music production and the genre of heavy metal. I absolutely love that song. And I'm sure people who hear it for the first time all these years later do as well.
Makes me think of my dad driving my sisters Camaro home from the dealership. I was with him in the Camaro, She was with my mom behind us and our other car. I will never forget that. Love you dad see you in heaven.
Thank you Mister Mark Knopfler for this and for everything ! You are one of the reason I picked up a guitar one day for ! Money for Nothing was one of this too !
Greatest guitarist of all time! This song changed so many lifes. Im 30, and i can't even describe how much talent this man has, its such a shame where music has shifted to be in 2021
I love hearing a musician say that they respect the integrity of their old songs. I wish more musicians realized just how attached we are to their songs in their original form.
Indeed. Every song is unique and mean the world to someone. My husband used to LOVE your music.. well Dire Straits. Now 17yrs after his passing I still listen to ALL OF THEM. And then Ticket to Heaven became MY SONG.. and True love never fades. Oh dear I miss the man so very much. Well, please don't ever stop making music!?❤
How nice that Mark Knopfler has a degree, which means the describes very well what kind of Talent it takes to achieve these things with your fingers. Not every Day is the same feelings, you have to work for it.This lyrical type of Songwriting to expres something and create it for posterity somehow reminds me of Sting and Phil Collins, the other british Intellectuals in the music scene.Thank you very much and what an honor Mark Knopfler that we were allowed to be a part of this.
i got my first job at 16 in a restaurant washing dishes, one friday night, this song came on the radio, about 1979ish,i was taken away, literally blew my mind.
I also was a teenager when this song came out and I can remember, like it was yesterday lying in bed one night and hearing it for the first time. I wasn't musical at all but I knew I had just listened to something that was on a whole other level.
Each time I watch this performance and people start applauding at that magical part of MK's solo and he smiles, I start bawling lol. Love what he said about music and songs. What a legend.
honestly I think its cool that he just got up on stage and actually had a discussion about guitar and music and how he sees it and the challenges he and others can face with guitar, all during a live show. I know some people are just there for the music, but as an aspiring musician, that is so awesome to see. So many times artists just go out there and do their thing and its a lot of mystique, most people dont know all the work that goes into it before and after the live performance. thank you for being a legend mark, one of the best there ever was.
He has a 1000 Sultan of Swing variations and they are all masterpieces.

This man is insanely good. His music is beautiful and lilting, almost hypnotic. I went to a dire straits concert and was relatively close to the stage and he plays effortlessly. Beauty in motion.
One of the most influential guitarist and musician as a whole. And on top of it all he's such a down to earth man. Mark is a great example.
Yeah!! And what a terrific band behind him; the drummer is exceptional.
Je t adore.
Driving down a country road near my home in 1979, this song came on and we literally pulled over and turned it up and just sat there, gobsmacked.
My dad told me a similar story, about how he never heard anything like it first time he heard it on the radio he just sat there completely in awe
That song, especially the end still ALWAYS puts a smile on my face. Such an important song in my life. Actually my favorite song ever. Thank you Mark!
I have so much love and respect for this guy. He’s just one of us. God bless you Mark. Such an inspiration to me as a kid. I thank you.
One of the greatest music geniuses that ever graced this world. Thank you Mark for the music.
Sultans" was instantly my no.1 all time song, and in the 40 something years later,it's still my no.1 all time song.
He's one of the great philosophers of the guitar, not merely a great musician. Thank you Mark x
So calm ,cool and collected he makes it look easy. A true master and a humble gentleman.
God bless you sir. I love your music so much . You are the sultan of swing ❤️
No doubt 👍💞
Yeah. He's a sultan of swing. The best sultan.
No thats guitar George
@@dandann8437 No guitar George is his rhythm guitarist, together they're all the Sultans of Swing!
the class of this genius guitar player is rare. Love from Morocco

Another moroccan :D ❤️❤️
Another Morrocan 🙃🙃✌
Anyway that song
“sultans of swing” was on my phone In a playlist that I had created.
Interestingly enough this song reminds me of roadtripping through deserts on my way to Las Vegas
Tears in my eyes while I read your comment Sr. Hope you keep on rocking. You have now a friend in Argentina..
Oh Mark every time you play that guitar you melt my heart, thanks for the wonderful songs down the years. Saw you live in the 1990's front seats didn't want to leave the arena you were so good. x
I love the grin on his face as he gets right into the solo and the crowd cheer.
"Yes honey, I did the twiddly bits this time"
A+😃yes I got the move...
I bet at 3:35 when Mark started smiling playing his "world-wide-famous-solo", all the people from the world, watching this video, were smiling too!!!
I know i did!
I had a tear to be honest !
A smile was formed on my face without me realising until the end of the song
absolutely! And my arms went up in victory!
YES! A big smile at that!!!!
literally grew up with this song, a radio staple when I was a kid. Fell asleep listening to it many times. Wicked good song! Never loses its appeal, just gets better with age. One of my fave guitar solo bits at the end, brilliant.
No matter what Mark does to me Sultans will be his signature song. It IS Mark.
Thank you, Sir! Thank you for everything!
Diego Boari Good for you, Diego!! Your English is fine!! 👍🏾😀
The Legend. The Master . The Artist Mark knopfler on His Red Stratocaster that's the Genuine Artist Ever ... Greetings from Yemen.
I started to play Guitar just because of this song. Good Bless you, Mark.
Thank you Mister Mark Knopfler for this and for everything ! You are one of the reason I picked up a guitar one day for ! Money for Nothing was one of this too !
My wife and I use to play this wide open while going down the road I miss my best friend
sorry that she had to go away like that
aww.. i am so sorry for your loss mate...
Memories live on...
So Lucky to have such great memories, sorry for your loss
im sorry for your lost.i bet that you and her had some good adventures together
Greatest guitarist of all time! This song changed so many lifes.
Im 30, and i can't even describe how much talent this man has, its such a shame where music has shifted to be in 2021
I love hearing a musician say that they respect the integrity of their old songs. I wish more musicians realized just how attached we are to their songs in their original form.
@Erik Von Handorf I wish someone close to Bob Dylan would tell him that :-)
3:20 The guitarist in the back is shaking his head in amazement with the rest of us
No, I think he's probably thinking, "Get on and play, Mark...!"
pretty sure that's not a guitar that he's holding
Incredible. This guy is one of the top guitarists, in the world.
My favorite song of all time. Unbelievable how talented Mark Knopfler is!
3:25 The audience cheering to the best part of one of the most iconic solos in rock history, it's just wonderful.
i got my first job at 16 in a restaurant washing dishes, one friday night, this song came on the radio, about 1979ish,i was taken away, literally blew my mind.
One of my all-time favorites!! Thank you, Mark!
It's amazing how the rest of the band looks at Mark with admiration in their faces
Was thinking the same thing as I watched this :)
By far the best guitarist I've ever heard or have heard amazing man and artist of music .....
That smile on his face when the crowd cheered. Amazing
honestly I think its cool that he just got up on stage and actually had a discussion about guitar and music and how he sees it and the challenges he and others can face with guitar, all during a live show. I know some people are just there for the music, but as an aspiring musician, that is so awesome to see. So many times artists just go out there and do their thing and its a lot of mystique, most people dont know all the work that goes into it before and after the live performance. thank you for being a legend mark, one of the best there ever was.
