If you know this job well you can do the job with no special tools except a degree wheel, a dial gauge and a couple of flat steel bars with a central hole drilled thru ... but as you say, the kit takes all the risk and hassle out of it and it's not too pricey.
Just be happy Jaguar put the timing chains on the front side of the engine. I was working on a Touareg Voltswagon /Audi engine that put everything on the rear side and requires pulling the engine, remove the transmission and plate just to get access. It's a terrible design.
#1 is driver side, front of engine. TDC is when the #1 piston reaches the very top of its stroke. TDC on the compression stroke is what you want, not exhaust stroke. You can confirm compression stroke by checking the position of the flywheel. It's a very strange method for sure.
