$1,000 Jaguar XJ8 RUNS AGAIN *Completely Re-Timed*

- I bought a 1999 Jaguar XJ8 with only 75k miles on kit for $1,000. After doing some troubleshooting I found the fuel system was completely dry. After replacing the fuel pump the car tries to start consistently but dies after a second. The internet says it's likely fuel washing down the cylinders and lowering compression to the point where it won't start. Today I'm going to try spoon feeding oil into the Nikasil coated cylinders to raise the compression... hopefully it starts and runs after! I hooked up the air intake and sealed it as well, lots of Jag techs mentioned the XJ8 can't run without the MAF.

Thanks for catering your content to your followers in this instance. I know we all wanted to see that Jag saved. Love your work
Something so satisfying about seeing these old Euro barges saved 😮💨
You are very welcome!
Ok I’m pumped!! So happy you decided to fix the jag! That’s why we love your content!! Thanks buddy 🎉
Thanks for watching! 💯
@@WatchJRGo it's funny how you need a "special tool" for a old Pontiac engine timing chain style. This is the same setup for timing as a 94' Grand Am (the one with the intake at the bottom of the engine), and uses the same tool.
I’d say it was always JR’s plan to fix it and he probably wanted it done quickly so scheduled Dana to help him. He was probably just saying he was done with it to build up the suspense and get the comments section going pending scheduling it at the other shop? After all he could have opened his garage door, pushed it back a bit, borrowed the tools and completed the job himself if he thought he could work through it quickly enough!
This is the John Ross we like. Doesn't stop to working on cars. Keep it up!
@@WatchJRGo If you want a quick profit, sell it to Tyler for $5K. He'll buy it in a heartbeat.
Absolutely admire people like Dana. I hope he makes an appearance again once in a while.
He could be stunt man for tom segura
Dana is awesome
That Jag is a gem. Thank you, Dana and the guys for bringing it back to life.
Please don't lower it or replace the original wheels, keep it original.
I know it’s not the same, but glad to see you back in your garage where it all started. And I have a feeling you’re gonna come back better than ever. It’s humble re-beginnings!
Its not the same, its better
Good job, i knew you would sort it out, because it's rare for you to throw in the towel. I do like it when you revive something that someone else has cobbled up, makes it gritty. Not everyone can diagnose that well, takes a lot of skill really. I like a challenge myself, so good on you. G-d bless.

Great to see and I genuinely believed this one was consigned to history. It'll be interesting to hear how it runs once its done a few miles. Congratulations on getting it running!
Yay the jag lives , I knew you wouldn't let it go without doing the job properly, well done JR 👏 👍 😀
I’d throw some Restore in the oil for compression loss. Best additive that I’ve ever used. Some fresh gas and drive that Jag for an hour or so. Anyways great that you decided to push on. Once that car gets a good detail and hoping just a couple more tweaks and it’s gonna be a beautiful runner.
Restore is incredible on cars with super high mileage and especially older cars like this!
Oddly this series really grabbed me.. it was fun seeing it come back to life
She sounds soooo good! Congratulations JR! Thanks for not giving up on her. I bet with a detail, it'll look like new again.
This is so awesome! Thank you to Dana and your whole crew, JR!
F**k yeah dude! your pushed through and got this old thing running. was alot of work for one of these, but you earned yourself a loyal viewer (probably a bunch of us). honestly thought you were done with it but the fact you kept going shows alot about you and what you do. You should get a Land Rover Disco 1 and bring it back to factory as much as you can :P bet it would get some decent views and love
I’m so happy you made this decision! It’s a gorgeous car and they just don’t make them like this anymore. They are pretty reliable once you have new tensioners and it’s done right.
Sure they are....
That's why they are admired for their reliability and durability and that reputation was reflected by their sales numbers vs it's competition and is stellar resale.
The jags after 2010 are all fomoco....the 5.0 is the f150 coyote engine trans. Same as Lr4 and RRSport. Great vehicles.
@@williamegler8771 Yes exactly! I’ve seen an 2001 XJ8 with 330k miles and it was mint inside out!
I have to give you so much credit for the amount of patience you have. I would have thrown every tool I own way before this.
Hitting it out of the park with the content at the moment jr! My favourite car youtuber at the moment. Love that you are back to fixing old cars and not the shop. Still miss the old beater honda days but hey bentleys and jags are always entertaining!
Hmm, it was probably for the best to have Dana do this, since it was more than just the timing. If you add the cost of Dana's work (assuming he didn't give you a special discount), are you still ahead in the cost vs. it's re-sale value?
Do they have any real resale value?
So happy you kept working on this beauty, I love this model of jag and she looks great and can't wait to see it clean and running good. I wish I had an old jag like that!
I am so happy you guys brought it back. This may be my favorite car you've done to date. #SavedTheCat
ITS ALIVE.......ALIVE!
JR do a buy merch raffle on it, so we can get a chance for Jag goodness.
The Bentley might be more suited to that, I'll look into it but you have to have a 3rd party put the whole deal together 😳
@@WatchJRGo Randy from Auto Auction Rebuilds is doing a give away, maybe he could help
Yes! It lives again, watching now, good job😎
So happy you stuck with the Jag, there is just something about them, they are one of the few cars that still have a personality :)
Am I the only one that want to see a series of this thing? maybe an exhaust and som wheels? That will be cool.
Glad you decided to check the timing. But, "Slamming' a car to the ground is so "Aaron and Richard " from GMG.
Oh I absolutely love that Jag! So happy she’s alive again - much kudos to proper techs like Dana. All she needs a good run and fresh gas now - an I-talian Tune Up, some Berryman’s B12 and feed her the onions!! Really great move fixing her and not giving up JR!
That engine has a high likely hood of eating a Rod bearing or something.
The Mention of the no Oil issue thing reminds me of what happened to my 2002 Lincoln LS. The plastic of the Timing chain guides Broke off, and clogged up the Oil pick up. that could be happening to this engine as well. It WILL kill the engine, its just a matter of time.
I really recommend Dropping the pan and checking, just to make sure this isn't the case. Id hate to see this thing Lock up after all this work.
That exactly what happened on my '15 Audi A6 3.0 TFSI at 74k miles.... so frustrating
Untrue you should remove your comment. The reason why there's no oil in the system is that it's a fairly high flow drain down design and when the engine is running it is more than proficient enough to provide the cushion that is needed to code everything and that's why you don't see almost any of these motors with spun bearings or rods. Again the only reason why all the engine was down in the pan was because the car had set for so long. helloooo
@@lyleg.9192 Considering he had been turning the engine over for a couple days trying to fix it? No there should have been oil at the top. I know this engine family VERY Well. and as much as that engine had turned over, Before this work, It should have had oil in the top end.
@@HeavyTanker-vx4oq the engine wasn't even probably cranking at 800 RPM doing so for 60 seconds or 90 seconds and then letting the oil drain back down is not enough and again the engine set for years so what little bit did try to make it up just simply went back down these engines actually need fortifier to keep some of it clinging to the parts, but again I challenge you to find an engine that was running fine and just had spun the rod or the bearings because of oil pressure or even had lost all its oil pressure even though maintenance was kept up.
@@lyleg.9192 My 2002 Lincoln LS V6. Was running perfect, No noise. Then one day while on a trip it decided to have a bad case of Rod knock, Diagnosed as a Spun/damaged rod bearing from a clogged oil pickup/or failed oil pump.
Much better than an LS swap. Congrats. Great series.
That’s a funny looking Bentley.😂😂
Hey the #4headlightgang is parked together now! 😂
Man, Witchita is amazing.. you have more parts, specialists, cars than I could ever dream about in San Jose.. Maybe I should move..
"The Jag Whisperer" Did you resolve the "wayward cam" issues?
Yup, pulled all the cam sprockets and phasers, then retightened everything to the book specs. Didn't see any more slip 🍻
Ayyyy, always pushing out these great videos. Thanks man
This is what and why we love your content Jr. because you take the most difficult problems and explain them to your audience in a manner that everyone can understand and comprehend. This is what other channels are missing. Keep this content coming. Great work!
So good to see the Jaguar nearly there. Well done JR we want more of this car please 🤩
Great job! What did you do to stop the coil pack fuse from blowing?
Maybe I missed it but what was causing the fuse to blow? Don’t think you mentioned how you got it to run lol
yeah that slammed jag looks absolutely awful. jags are supposed to be classy. yours might need a bit of polish but at least it doesn't look like some 16 year olds attempt at street cred.
Great video, love to see these old jags that deserve another life bought back from the brink. This old car would make a great daily driver.
Congratulations on the Jag, Great work, Engine sounds very good and thankfully the valves are good.
Very cool. Happy you were able to bring it back to life. Hope to see you drive it around “the block” before you send it down the road. Either way, glad you gave it another chance.
That man literally saved this car. Also shout out to 100%Jake, for slowing the Monster energy drink population's rapid expansion, single handed. The heroes we need.
I think they're an invasive species. I do what I can.
Great job everyone involved in getting the Jag running again. I think some heat cycles, and about 50 miles driving might clear up some little issues.
Thanks for posting this video. I am the owner of a 99 XJ8 (Champagne metallic, matching leather) that unfortunately was taken to an unscrupulous mechanic for code diagnostic work and had to be flatbedded home. The car wouldn't start when I went to pick it up. He explained that it needed a whole new engine and that he just so happened to specialize in engine replacement! The poor Jag has been sitting in my driveway now, forlorn, for 4 years.
thanks for the follow through brother we really appreciate it!!!!
You are such a good mechanic wow you got the jag going .good job.
Thank you for carrying on with the Jag i think we all appreciate your efforts .
I must admit, I never expected to hear this one run. Right on JR!
Me personally, I want more Dana Jag stories from Florida 🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤷🏽♂️🤪🤪
That Was a wise decision.
Outstanding! Glad to see it back up and running!! LOL If I had more than $1500 in the bank I'd offer to buy it!!
Awesome!!! So glad you decided to fix it 😀😃🙂🙃😊
If I could work on the Jaguar XJ8 with Watch Jr Goes, 100% Jakes, and Danas I would drink the shot of whiskey and the cold Bartle Skeets with them, and pack up the Hash Pipe with Rocky with them and get all schmoked up.
Fantastic video, so glad you got it sorted, I’ve had mine for 15+ years, 400,000km so still going strong. When you cranked it before the repairs the first thing that stood out to me was how fast it cranked! So timing makes perfect sense.
Do you still have it?
I’m so happy to see it run! Let’s see some driving next and WOT!👍👍
Bet you're glad now you didn't scrap it. On some UK cars you need a specialist who knows the ins and outs of a particular make. Dana is one such person..years of training and experience. So pleased to this this cat run again.
Well done, i really was gutted when you said that you were given up on the jaguar especially with the low mileage and it is in great condition body wise, i thank you sir for saving my favourite car excellent
Does Elliot Alvis still have the M parallels that he had for the Z4? If so those looked sooo good on that other Jag.
I think he sold those, but I'll ask him 🍻
Winners never quit. You done good, very proud of you.
So pleased you gave the old lady some care and attention to have her running again, it wasn't her fault she was abused, neglected and abandoned 16 years ago. From the UK.
Congratulations, I'm glad you didn't give up on the Jag. Nice job boys
Seemed to be more clanking under the hood...But it is a Jag after all .....Sell it quick before it quits!!!!
Absolutly love watching Dana work. He was the guy I tool my Boxster to before Johnny went independent.
I was just coming to terms that the Jag was over, then this wonderful surprise. Now maybe with a fresh tank of gas, it will clean up more, be a great driver
you gotta do more content on this Jag. what a unique car. Dana is fabulous. so glad you persisted with this vehicle !
I'm glad that you didn't throw in the towel on this one. I never see you give up on a vehicle so I'm happy to see this one running and saved. A rare classic that someone can enjoy again. Great work as always J.R.!
I love that era of jags
Awsome John !! I'm sooo glad you didnt give up on it ! Nice one, regards MEC
Great job! This car really deserves to be back on the road!
Curious minds want to know the list of repairs you did while at the shop. What fixed the fuse issue? Was it multiple intake vacuum leaks that caused the surging and non-responsive acceleration? How far off was the timing? What was the issue with the "independent" intake? Love seeing videos for the DIY in all of us.
Been waiting all day for this episode
those trains must have been terrible, IMO you're putting out at least 50 to 75% more videos now than when you had the shop lol
Was hoping you fixed it
Well done you and Dana. It was worth saving!
I hope you will do something nice with the car instead of just flipping it once fixed! a roadtrip maybe?
Great job fixing the Jag. What was the causing the fuse for the ignition system to blow?
So glad you got that car going. Slam it like the other one and keep it.
That other one is static on cut springs… it’s pretty awful. Looks neat though
By the way Scotty Kilmer says Jag good for another 500 thousand miles 🤞
I don’t think he believes in anything that’s not a Toyota 😛
Jake bin everywhere in the last month
He just showed up there right after we started working, 100%Everywhere
@@WatchJRGo he hit me up to get his car aligned, serendipitous you were at the shop too. Though I think that’s what got him moving. 😂
I never heard why the fuse for the ignition coils was blowing. Was there a short in the wiring harness? What actually got it to run after you re-timed it?
This is a car I really would love to see finished
Thanks for not giving up on this one. Even though it's not worth much it's too nice to junk.
That's a really nice Jag now that it runs. With 20:20 hindsight, it was worth the effort.
The timelapse tune is 🔥🔥. What was it? Glad you didn’t give up on it. Cool to see this thing back on the road.
Please don’t pimp it… the BMW rims on the other one look ridiculous.
Yo love the channel
Thanks for watching! 🍻
We’re invested in the Jaaaaaaaaaaaag!
This thing coming back to life was actually quite amazing to watch. Bizarre, but amazing. I had to rewatch it chug itself back to life. That’s something I’ve never seen - car chugging on it’s own like that willingly.
Please don’t slam/ tint your jag..that was hideous
another great video from JR, thanks
YOU COULDN'T JUST PICK UP THE SEATS AND PUT THEM INSIDE THE HOUSE FOR 2 DAYS?
I still drive my 2002 Jaguar XJR that was abandoned at the dealership parking lot, I had to restored and it is not perfect but it is an amazing car! Good job on restoring your Jag JR!
JR is a wise man, always give the people what they want! Awesome story bringing the cat back to life!
I thought for sure you were going to give up on it, I wouldn't blame you if you did but I'm glad you didn't.
I would keep that car after it's running, that's a really classy car. That styling is timeless. You have someone close that knows how to work on jags, that's a big help. It'll probably take a while to bring it back to normal after sitting all those years, but probably still worth it.
I knew ya wouldn't give up on it that easy 😁
What a pleasure to watch and work with properly trained techs. We've all been there....
Wooo. Glad you kept at it
Great job 🎉
Sweet!!🎉🎉
So JR, how much you want for this $1000 car??
Congratulations!!! So F**** cool. I knew if possible. JR would fix. And I agree w Jake. Car now needs a long run at 70-75 mph across Oklahoma to clean it out and really charge it up. 👍
You’re smashing UA-cam. So many videos lately. Bentley looks like it’s going to be a long journey.
