I find this song (Caribou) haunting. I saw Black Francis (at the time) getting out of his big white Town Car before a show and told him this was my favorite song (that week), he said they hadn't played it on tour yet and he played it that night and dedicated it to me. Coolest thing that ever happened to me.
I don't know how to link it, but the documentary included with their greatest hits DVD has this live show and clips of Bowie and others like Vlur talking about how this show influenced them

I bought my first pixies cd on a whim. My cousin was in town. He, my brother, and I went to tower records in fresno. The plan was to each buy a new cd to listen to while we played D&D that night and drink jolt cola. I walked past the pixies cd with the taxidermy monkey on the cover, and I immediately froze. I felt something. I just new there was something good in there. I showed my cousin the cd I was going to buy. He asked if I'd ever heard them. I said no. He thought it was dumb to buy a cd of a band I've never heard of. But I did it anyways. I don't remember what he or my brother bought. Cause we never got a chance to listen to them. We played that pixies cd over and over all night long on repeat. Ever song was a hit, and we all were big fans from then on.

Doolittle hadn’t been released and nobody had heard Hey yet, so when Charles said ‘hey’, some people in the audience said hey back :)
Imagine hearing Hey for the first time at that show :0
The response to Black Francis saying "Hey!" started as (planned?) coincidence and became a tradition.

In my extensive viewing of Pixies videos, this must have been one of the best shows they ever did?
I'd have to agree. Caribou was glorious
May 1 1988 - I was there!!! It was incredible.
The town n country is famed for it's live sound, which is why a lot of bands record live albums there. I've no idea why that is but it definitely is
Town n Country was a great venue - worked in Kentish Town and 10 minute walk to Hampstead Heath for lunch - nice!
I concur
This is something that we will listen in 30 years from now and say holy shit! that was history.
