Crazy to think this song was written about the biblical tale of Samson: he was betrayed by his love (Delilah) and his eyes were gouged out by his enemies. He was chained to the pillars of a temple and ridiculed. Meanwhile, his hair (the source of his strength that Delilah had cut off while he slept) grew back. Over time his renewed strength allowed him to pull the temple down on those that had injured him. This song builds and builds, the baseline steady, till the crescendo of the story comes to the end, in a freakishly powerful way. I first heard this song back in 89' and was gobsmacked, "WHO ARE THE PIXIES?!" This live version might be their best version.

One of the few live songs that i’ll listen to repetitively, just the delivery of the line “chained to the pillars, a three day party, i’ll break the walls, and kill us all” wow, wonder is that’s a delilah and samson reference?
The whole song. Samson's eyes were gouged out. He is saying to the Phillistines, sure, gouge my eyes, torture me, just stay here and do it, don't do anything but that... and just wait.. in a little while my hair will grow back, and then during your 3-day party, I'll collapse the temple by pushing down the walls with my "holy fingers", killing us all, ultimately getting revenge.
Used to play a cover version of this in one of the many bands I played in over the years. Always went down a storm. A fantastic song. Driven by the bass with some tasty guitar lines. Perfect.

Quelle Basse ! ces changements (presque imperceptibles) de rythme (surtout dans l'intro) ! Wahou !
I miss the 90's, loved it!
One of the best live performances I think I’ve ever seen perfect band perfect song
Saw them at the Hammersmith Apollo in London about 8 years ago. One of the best gigs I've ever been to. Dancing like a man possessed & had to wring out the T-shirt I'd been wearing when I got outside into the cold air & buy a new one from a vendor.
Rádio head ceremony
I was there my guy! And at this gig in the video
I saw them there in 1991!
@Milly May True, true
I loved this band when I was young, 30+ years ago. Can't believe how much time has passed. I used to bounce off the walls to their records. Incredible stuff.
Oh yea I remember !
Why is THIS song so addictive?😎
Half the audience weren't probably even born when this came out... What a testament to their timelessness.... Fucking Epic!
J'ai 46ans, j'écoutais ça aussi il y a 30ans, c'est toujours aussi bon !
Magistral performance......PIxies é uma banda fantástica!!!!!!!
Bless these people! I wish them all the best in these weird days...OMG theor sound has always made me sooo happy...im deeply in love with the bass player btw..
Never gets old, always has a distinctive pulse.
This is the one of the best live performances in the history of live performances
Too true!!
That bass is insane. Her tempo is soothing and chill.
But is it? Her tone is so mids-heavy and her pick-style is very light. She seems like she doesn't have much confidence. I'm not a fan of her bass style or her performance, but to each his own, I suppose.
@@BenWard29 oh I think she's plenty confident. Look up "Perfect Circle - Judith" here on YT.
Kevin Skomsvold exactly. Paz is well skilled! I think folk just want Kim back.... I’d love Cliff back in Metallica:( some things just ain’t gonna happen, so we move forward
J T ... That bass is average to say the least
It's fine, it's not her fault she's not Kim Deal
Une ligne de basse incroyable, meilleure performance des Pixies, Love it
Will always be one of the best songs penned, rehearsed, and played.............Pixies live..... forever.
50 Years old. Listening to music for atleast 40 years. How could I have missed this? But I did. Shame on me. What a bloody great song!
Where have you been with your head, shame, shame, shame, lol. Pixies epic 👍😃👍
Best version I've ever heard of the song - one of the best live recordings of all time by any band!
The nth time listening to this... That bass... The build up. Frank Blacks' voice. Joey Santiago's wall of sound. It's perfect.
My favorite live videos of all time.
One of the greatest performances of all time.
With holy fingers indeed , you guys are legends in your own time , who else can say that still alive and that young.
La magia de la canción esta en la tensión que se genera entre el verso y el estribillo y va aumentando hasta llegar al ultimo estribillo donde explota todo, en esta versión se aprecia perfectamente eso, una genialidad
Zampa eso refleja fuerza y poder.
Zampa I can understand enough Mex.to know you liked it.
Los ví en directo en Amberes, en el tour de 2016 y siguen siendo muy bueeeenos.
@@evinghamhoffnikel5644 What is Mex? You mean spanish right?. I can understand enough North American(...English) to know you meant that
Pues porque son los Pixies....
So far the best performance of this song, better than the album version... This is what I call a 'POWER SONG'.
Damn. Listened to it a hundred times or more. So good.
Lucky to see them in New Zealand in March , just before the Pandemic hit. Epic gig.
You win lottery's too!?
I had tickets to see them in March in Sydney. I was literally jumping up and down when I got tickets, and walked around for months with a skip in my step knowing this show was coming up. Then out of nowhere everything went balls up, and they cancelled 2 days before this show. The right and responsible thing to do and all, but damn. Absolutely gutted.
Yep I did , living in a country without fucked up leadership, smashing pack the pandemic.
was planning to see them in Yokohama (small club) in MARCH 2020 ... then the shit hit, Pray for 2021, gotta see Black Francis....
Saw them in Glasgow in October 2019. They were absolutely brilliant.
Their concert could just be 1 hour of that bassline + drums and I'd be happy.
His crackling voice makes makes it so much better tho.
Igual yo
A 4 minute intro would be great.
Bass line so like So far away from The Offspring
Sheer power! This band always radiated an impressive strength, and this song really comes at you like a wall of unstoppable, hypnotic rhythm...
I’ve been enjoying music videos on you tube for so many years now… literally years of great music videos and live songs of the greatest musicians of all time and I’ve literally obsessed with shit on here sometimes replaying the same song over and over and over and I will put my hands down all time best live song of a band is this live version of gouge away! Thank you pixies! HAIL BLACK FRANCIS !!!! AND STAY ALL DAY!!!!
I get goosebumps everytime I hear this song whether the studio version or live....
man...the location, the sound..and frank looks so tired but explodes with such a power with a voice that´s better than ever. they definately aged well.
Gouge away, you can gouge away
Stay all day if you want to
Missy aggravation
Some sacred questions, you stroke my locks
Some marijuana if you got some
Gouge away, you can gouge away
Stay all day if you want to
Sleeping on your belly
You break my arms, you spoon my eyes
Been rubbing a bad charm with holy fingers
Gouge away, you can gouge away
Stay all day if you want to
Chained to the pillars
A 3 day party, I break the walls
And kill us all with holy fingers
Gouge away, you can gouge away
Stay all day if you want to.
thank you!!
@@Rom2Serge have you heard of google
Samson
@@Jon-cw8bb no man i wrote a reply so this comment will have more responses and UA-cam had lifted lyrics up in the comment line.
@@Rom2Serge as it should be
I be 69 yrs old… and this song cuts the groove… faith no more… ashes to ashes tremendous..
Best performance iv ever seen of this song !! You can feel the gouge
One of the few live songs that i’ll listen to repetitively, just the delivery of the line “chained to the pillars, a three day party, i’ll break the walls, and kill us all” wow, wonder is that’s a delilah and samson reference?
Aaron Hopkins yeah it is
Agree 100%🙏
Yes it absolutely is
The whole song. Samson's eyes were gouged out. He is saying to the Phillistines, sure, gouge my eyes, torture me, just stay here and do it, don't do anything but that... and just wait.. in a little while my hair will grow back, and then during your 3-day party, I'll collapse the temple by pushing down the walls with my "holy fingers", killing us all, ultimately getting revenge.
monkey gone to heaven has lots of religious reference too.
Feels like there's something left, like this still isn't the top of the mountain.
Maravillosamente maravillosa
Well, I'm 62 and I just found this. and you know what, I like this.
YAS
🤙🙏🎸⚡❤💯
Never too late! They are still touring, although the last time I saw them live was 1991.
Saw them in Montreal on march 2019, they were so loud, weezer did the opening for them, solid show and Frank Black still sounds amazing
wtf i missed weezer and pixies, im just a 3hr car ride from mtl :(
Bass guitar is bad ass. :D
bilguun itgel absolutely true
100% agree man!
Bass and drums...heaven. my car windows will blown away
Babass
I've learned how to play the bass because of both Kims. :)
Love those little flourishes that Charles adds at 3:59 and 4:07. Those are the cherries on top.
"Exceptional performance" no fkn doubt, the best performance of this song they have ever had in the studio or live.
best version ever. its better than the studio version. words cant describe how good this is
Frank Black has to have the best scream in rock n' roll history.
No! But he arguably has one of the best consistent screams in rock history
I get it, but still.. quite the overstatement though
@@jeroenverbeeck7925 Who do you think has the best scream in rock history?
this bass riff is a master piece!!!!!!!!OMG
Hell I'm 70 still love them
The guy with the grey hair at 4:03 is rocking it man! 🤘
We?
I was there with all the other ageing surfers reliving their dirty youth. It was awesome.
Regarding vocals, I agree with you. However, the bass is much better, even thru the song.
Year?
Were you there with Rosa?
Used to play a cover version of this in one of the many bands I played in over the years. Always went down a storm. A fantastic song. Driven by the bass with some tasty guitar lines. Perfect.
I love this new girl, she has the energy and a beautiful voice, congratulations!
One of the best bass line entry's ever ..... very underrated band.
I mean, The Pixies are pretty well known to everyone that "gets into" music. If they're underrated then they're sitting just below the surface; everyone both within and surrounding Music loves The Pixies. They typify a sound ahead of so many others in their field. They have inspired so much that I challenge you to engage the world of musicians and become pleasantly surprised. They're great cover/warm up material. Get the juices flowing.
"Underrated" only in certain commercial eyes. Today they are still one of the best!!
