Crazy to think this song was written about the biblical tale of Samson: he was betrayed by his love (Delilah) and his eyes were gouged out by his enemies. He was chained to the pillars of a temple and ridiculed. Meanwhile, his hair (the source of his strength that Delilah had cut off while he slept) grew back. Over time his renewed strength allowed him to pull the temple down on those that had injured him. This song builds and builds, the baseline steady, till the crescendo of the story comes to the end, in a freakishly powerful way. I first heard this song back in 89' and was gobsmacked, "WHO ARE THE PIXIES?!" This live version might be their best version.

Wow, just wow.

This version just feels so raw and aggressive and very emotionally charged like he's remembering why he wrote the song and the rest of the band is matching his intensity and the audience is feeling the electricity in the air and don't care and want to scream along, and do, and it's perfect. I can't even listen to the regular version anymore.

the 1991 version, they've just improved since then in my humble opinion... also the 1991 mixing is not gonna give it much of a fair chance, so maybe my ears just rejected it as i've been treated by 20 years of digital mixing

You took me down the Rock N 'Roll path and thanks to you I developed my own musical tastes. Today, I discover that you left this world of your own free will, taking an overdose of pills until you were sound asleep. Dear brother, when I found out about that, coming to listen to this song was the only thing that occurred to me at the time, and here I am! listening Dark Necessities at 3 in the morning, while singing loudly and enjoying the music as if you are still with me to listen to it together. Brother, when you first showed me this song, you told me that we all had Dark Necessities hidden within us, but we weren't brave enough to show them to everyone. Now I understand it and I am sorry I understood it too late. I love you, brother, and I will always love you. Thank you for showing me these musical wonders. The song is about Samson and Delilah.
Samson is punished by God for wielding the jaw of a ass in battle; as a Nazirite he had taken an oath to keep himself sanctified, which meant (among other things) never to pollute himself by touching a dead thing. His holy fingers hence rubbed the bad charm, and so his unbreakable arms are broken and his invincible eyes are spooned.
The story ends with Samson chained to the pillars by his enemies, who celebrate in his defeat with a three day party. Samson calls out to God; his strength returns enough for him to break the walls and kill everyone, including himself.

Nothing against them, they're excellent, I just didn't have very eclectic taste as a kid. Most of my favorite rock bands were never played on commercial radio. I just said Pavement 1) to be a smartass and 2) because I genuinely think they represent what I loved in 90s music with a fuller range of songwriting and musicianship. Not the best, or most interesting, but significantly better than most, always, and probably the best of the "indie" bands that blew up in popularity.

@@johnnycrapford8811 its about how the notes are played man. Its badass and propulsive, do you thunk this song woukld be better with fancy triplets, octave work and fills. It wouldnt. Bassist is great in the peter hook mould of bassperson.
also the backing vocals are sick

Would you know that this is a song from the 80s. Pixies inspired the 90s grunge sound.

Worst version I've ever heard going back to 1990....how to crush a masterpiece, so glad I haven't seen Pixies since the Doolittle anniversary tour 2009. Brixton. Look it up. Not the best ever but it was still seismic back then. Also Into the White.
