    Oh hey, VW made a serviceable transmission... Amazing!
    There's actually a neat little trick to working out torque specs for parts like that, so you don't have to go nuts trying to find it. What you do is take the circumference of the cap, root it over the inverse of the cube of the diameter of the base, multiply by Beethoven, and you get the sum of Plastic and Aluminum, which I believe you'll find is "Snug." ;D
    Sorry, felt like being a dork. :]

    Standard procedure is to let it drain for 20 minuttes. At 6:55 there would still be around 2-400 ml fluid in the gearbox which needs to be drained. This is due to the oil hiding small places. Therefore it is incomplete. Now you know. I am pretty sure that it is NOT stated in the workshop guide, which is a bit odd. The same counts for the 1. gen TSI (BMY) where even the engine oil needs to drain for at least 20 minutes. If not almost half a litre remains in the system.. Very odd design by VW.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  6 років тому +7

      I took possession of a car last year that had been sitting for 10 years... I looked down the oil filler cap hole and saw oil sitting in the top of the head... 10 years!!! Engine or transmission... you can't get all the oil out. 500ml is nothing to be concerned about... that's why there's no mention / no need to mention it in the service info. Good to know that you are doing it correctly... I'm sure many of my viewers will take the extra 20min. Send me your mailing address and I'll send you some of my channel stickers.

      If your transmission has an oil pan at the "bottom" of the transmission, then you have an "automatic" transmission that has a filter inside the transmission. This video is for a DSG (standard transmission with automatic controls)... which has an oil pan at the "front face" of the transmission.

    • @EXOVCDS

      +François-Xavier Wiart It is brake parts cleaner... it evaporates quickly, so it has less chance to soak-in to something if that is what you are worried about.

    If you first drain the oil from the gearbox then the oil running out the filter won't happen. Also no need to remove battery to change the DSG filter. Just remove air filter and you will have place beside it. But nice and clean work.

    Hello Thomas, many thanks for such an excellent and detailed video. I would like to know if the oil has to be at any specific temperature before draining it. Many thanks in advance for your support.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  3 роки тому +1

      No specific temperature for draining. If your engine is cold, you can let the engine run for 5 minutes... to warm up the transmission oil "a little bit". You don't want it too warm, because the warmer it is, the longer you have to wait for the temperature to come down below 35c (for checking fluid level). Even if you add cold fluid, the warm transmission will warm up the fluid and fluid temperature will be more than 35c before you even finished putting everything back together.

    Hi. I recently bought a used Mk6 Golf Gti with 78.000Km on the clock. The previous owner had the dsg oil and filter replaced on time but i'm not sure if it was done properly or even the correct oil was used because he didn't do it to vw mechanic. The car runs well but i'am thinking about going to the dealer to change it again. Is this method good enough or should i ask for a full flash where special equipment is used to drain everything out of the box? What would you recommend in this case?

      Check power & ground supplies at the main harness connector of the DSG... a wiring diagram will tell you what fuses need to be checked and what color the wires are. Look for any damage to wires (due to corrosion, impact from an accident etc). If everything checks out OK, then the mechatronic is probably bad. A fellow youtuber is a DSG Guru... his channel is:

      It is impossible to drain all the fluid out... that is why fluid level is checked at 35c. At minimum, add the same amount that was drained. But to get the level correct, a slight overfill has to happen... so that the fluid can be drained to the correct level at 35c.

    Thanks for the video. I've done one DSG drain and fill the usual way by removing the battery tray and bottom filling followed by running up to temperature and draining until you get drops rather than a stream. I am now due again for this service on my Golf. I plan on draining, measuring and top filling. Do you suggest just adding 5 liters even if only 4.5 liters drains out? What is the harm, if any, just to leave that small excess behind? Keep up the good work!

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  3 роки тому +1

      Overfilling can cause aeration... air in fluid reduces its effectiveness and can also cause oxidation (due to moisture in the air bubbles) in areas that are supposed to be air free. That would be my guess... I'm not sure if 1/2 liter will be an issue. In "hotter climates", fluid level is to be checked at a hotter temperature, which results in more fluid draining out / less fluid staying in the transmission. Adding 5 & draining to the correct level (at the correct temperature) is not that big of an undertaking and is well worth the piece of mind / second guessing oneself.

    • @shith00k
      @shith00k 3 роки тому

      Thanks, I can drain the excess easily enough but I am only going to refill slightly more than what is drained. The procedure I followed last time had me bottom filling 6 liters just to have upwards of a liter and a half go into my drain pan. Pretty wasteful.

    hi Thom. I am pretty desperate with my stupid jetta mk6. so it's 2011 jetta with the 2.5l and a dsg. the car started giving me a very shitty problem lately. it will sometimes (more and more often) not engage into reverse when I put it in R. it makes a slightly different noise than free-reving, but it certainly is not moving. then if I change the gears it will be fine again. doesn't matter if I am going from d to r or from p to r. it will do it rvery now and then. I scanned it with vcds and there are no codes for anything. the car has only 59 000kms on it. dsg fluid was changed at 50 000.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  8 років тому

      +Rumen Hristov I've got no DSG experience aside from changing oil & filter. I don't know if your DSG is part of the early generation that had mechatronic issues... my guess is that it would still be mechatronic related, as the rest of the transmission is standard mechanical items (aside from the clutch pack).

    I have an 06 2.0 B6 passat with 138k. I got it w 82k in 2010, so it's not driven a ton. However it has started a slight whining when put in drive vs. in neutral. It's clearly a drivetrain noise, and likely the transmission. I thought about a transmission oil change and inquired from the dealer, but they said that was likely not a good idea with the higher miles. Would you agree that doing this on a car with over the 125-140 miles is not good? Or is this just a bunch a baloney from my local VW dealer? thanks D. BTW- thanks for posting your video of this

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  4 роки тому

      There is some truth to that. If the whine us caused by a bearing or gear(s)... changing the fluid is not gonna help (in my mind). If the whine comes & goes while you are at cruising speed, the noise could be the differential ring gear. As the gear is loaded & unloaded between pulling the car and being pushed (vehicle inertia), a noise like that is quite common on older vehicles in general (no matter the make & model).

    thanks for the video. i'm planning to do my own dsg when my tdi reaches 40k miles. i've watched and read a lot of video/threads. just wondering if you have measured how much fluid drains out? quite a few said consistently about 4.5~4,6 liters comes out, just fill ~4.6 liter from top and call it a day. when filling from bottom, it often underfills. i'm still debating which filling methods to use......

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  6 років тому +1

      It can be done from the top (I have not done so, I have heard of people doing it that way)... but it takes
      a long time. Blauparts sells the adapter that is required to fill from the bottom.
      www.blauparts.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=dsg&cat=3
      All you need is a long hose so that you can fill while standing in front of the car. The long hose will allow you to stand and the fluid will run down the tube, and up into the transmission from the bottom.

    Hi Thomas, hope you're doing great.. I've got a 2004 A4 1.8T AMB engine with CVT Multi-tronic transmission.. I've recently attempted to change my ATF fluid and Exterior filter.. Had few issues, wondering if you would offer some of your expert advice, possibly shedding some light.. Car is in the Air on jacks, on level ground..
    1 -- Engine was running until trans was hot enough to drain the fluid around best around 45c (A little over 6quarts flowed out, while engine off).
    2 -- I then replaced the Exterior filter (Made by Cohline $130).
    3 -- afterwards I pumped 5.5 quarts in with a hand pump that looks like a bug sprayer, system was pressurized (10-15psi small hand pump bug spray type) with an adapter for the audi fill plug which screws on to fill port.
    4 -- While adapter still on the fill plug and hand pumps small valve shut, I attempted to cycle through the gears PRNDS, however a terrible sound came on (like making a bad shift on manual car or traction control going on), felt resistance from the brake pedale against my foot, with the ABS light coming on, indicating possible brake failure.. Not sure if the brakes are somehow in sync with the trans.
    5 -- Possible mistakes made, the adapter not removed from fill port, prior to starting engine/shifting through gears..
    6 -- first attempt didn't allow trans to reach 35 to 40c to allow excess fluid to drain out, or add more fluid as needed, then allowing excess fluids to completely drip out and stop without allowing heat to get passed 42c, possibly losing too much fluid in that instance.
    7 -- Second attempt removed the fill plug adapter that screwed on with the hose and valve, which attached to the bug spray style pump hand pump that pressurizes.. Used different pump, multipurpose hand pump from Harbour freight with two hoses, one inlet, the other outlet (fit inside fill port perfectly and was not screw on style, completely blocking fluid from dripping out once reaching required fill temps).
    8 -- Fluid was pumped in with the harbour freight pump ( allowed excess to pour out), afterwards when no more was possible to be filled at recommended temps, fill plug was put back on, and I attempted to shift through the gears again with foot on the brake, 2 seconds on each gear..
    9 -- Although that aweful sound happened again as though making a bad shift on a manual car, or when the traction control goes on and makes a strange sound.. it seemed as though the trans had a hard time shifting into reverse, (neutral was fine) then it had hard time again shifting to D.. I felt pressure again from the brake pedal pushing against my foot again, the ABS light came on, along with traction control light, and another light indicating brakes failed..
    10 --I am not sure if the sound was the ATF fluid going through the system forcing out air bubbles, or whether the abs/brakes responding the way it did along with traction control, was because the car is in the air with the tires dangling freely.. I fear i might have caused damage to the Trans or abs system/traction control..
    11 -- Any advice or feedback you can offer, would be great help and very much appreciated..
    * I might attempt to drain the fluid out, and retry the process, measuring how much comes out that i filled, and using only the harbour freight hand pump this time to fill the trans, allowing excess fluid to pour out at recommended fill temps without plugging the fill port, allowing excess ATF fluid to drip out.. Hopefully this can also help others who might attempt to replace their ATF fluid & filter in the future!
    Best Regards,
    Tony

    hi , Thomas,
    do you have one video doing it for Passat B6 / 09G trans?
    also you know a web side where i can buy the complete change fluid kit?
    thank you.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  6 років тому

      No video... here's a kit:
      www.blauparts.com/vw-passat-atf-transmission-fluid-change-kit-09g.html
      Confirm with blauparts that this is the right kit for you.
      Pretty much similar... drain fluid, remove oil pan, replace filter, install oil pan, fill fluid, start engine, go through gears, check / top-up fluid (if it does not run out) at 35c till fluid drips from inspection / fill hole.

    • @EXOVCDS

      It really isn't... it looks more difficult than it is.
      Drain, fill, check level at correct temperature, done.

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  5 років тому +1

      When a transmission is "dry / not leaking fluid"... it's usually OK to assume that fluid level is OK / does not need to be checked. If a leak were present, you'd have to find & fix the leak before checking for correct fluid level. Since recommended service of filter & fluid is 40k miles. It's not a frequent thing that needs to be done... manufacturers removing engine oil dipsticks is more of a nuisance.

      Thanks bro 👍any idea how much the dealership charges to flush and refill the transmission or an oil change last oil change my wife took to pep boys and I was scared they used the wrong oil

    • @EXOVCDS
      @EXOVCDS  5 років тому +1

      It is what it is... Canadian prices will be different than US. Independent shops will charge less than the dealer. Depending on where you go, they might do things differently. Drain & only fill what was drained (not check at correct temperature). I understand wanting to DIY... tools & service info are readily available. Depending on the job, having someone do it can be cheaper in the long run. I've helped guys fix something over a two week period... that could have been done buy a shop in 6hrs. 6 x $/he might seem a lot, but 2 weeks without a car (for me) sounds worse. If you already have all the service info, you're ahead of the game! =)
