      What is "essential oils" ?

  • @jennacablair
    @jennacablair 6 років тому +713

    Very helpful however i advise against the essential oils. Or at least just use them prior to your flight if you have to use them. A lot of people have scent sensitivities. There is nothing worse than being stuck in a tube, filled with recirculated air and having someone use a scented product that ends up giving you a headache or a worse reaction. So while it may help you relax it could potentially put someone else in agony for hours.

    • @jennacablair
      @jennacablair 6 років тому +102

      Kristiana Chancy Yes it still can give someone a headache. You obviously do not have scent sensitivities. It doesn't matter if it's the worlds best essential oils. When you have issues with scents, no matter what the ingredients it can still trigger an extremely severe reaction. Don't comment on something when you have no idea on the matter.

    • @kristiananoel
      @kristiananoel 6 років тому +8

      jennacablair lol okay. I know more then you’re assuming. But I’ll keep using my essential oils all day, everyday - whether I’m on a plane or not. Hella better then people who bring fish, eggs, or fast food on a plane. Those stink up a plane so bad

    As a working flight attendant, I'd like to say thank you for this. A lot of these "hacks" are things we do on a daily basis. Most of this is very good, there are a few issues, though. 1, Personal liquor is a NO NO. It's against the law in the United States. Don't even try. The consequences can be very severe; 2, While it may be less expensive to purchase WiFi in advance you may run into an issue where the WiFi is out of service. Be sure to know how to get a refund; 3, If the TSA does call you out on bringing too much to security, be prepared to toss some of the less essential items so your items do fit the quart sized bag. Don't try to argue with them. They always win. Anyway, for all your followers, enjoy your flights and this big beautiful wide world.

    1:33 this only works if you’re on a non-discount airline that occasionally flies with a less than full plane. On Southwest, Ryanair, et. al., the plane will always be full or they would never be profitable. I fly Southwest often and it’s bad enough to be stuck with a middle seat, but then when I get there, I find a couple that has selected the Aisle and window seat and placed their personal belongings in the middle seat to discourage anyone else from sitting there. Ahem, cough, sir and/or madam, that’s actually my seat, and if I could sit in it that would be greatly appreciated. Now if you want to sit together that’s totally fine, and I’m more than happy to switch seats with someone. but don’t roll your eyes and huff and puff at me for wanting to sit in the seat that I paid for and thus foil your ingenious plan to get an extra seat for free.

    When I was a travel agent a lot of times when people were flying from say NYC to LAX they would have a choice to connect in either Chicago or Dallas. If they were travelling in the winter, I always suggested going through Dallas. It might seem obvious, but I was shocked that most people didn't think of this themselves. Dallas isn't as likely to have heavy snow and blizzards in the winter, so it was worth it not to risk a canceled flight or delays. No guarantees, but better chances.

    The best travel hack is to be considerate of the other 100 + people traveling with you and understand that this is not your plane to do anything you want. Dont take up too much room, accept what they give you to eat, drink etc. and dont be demanding. Look after yourself.

    The only one I don't entirely agree with is carry-on only ... as an Australian we tend to take lengthy trips, 6-8 weeks aren't unusual. We're just so far away and the flights are so expensive we make sure we make it's worthwhile. So most of the time you have to check your bags in.

    • @hopscotchtheglobe

      Kristen & Siya fair point! I couldn't do it mostly traveling into a northern hemisphere winter. Plus I've always said I've paid for checked luggage already, might as well use it.

    • @ttm387
      @ttm387 6 років тому +7

      If you travel infrequently, 6-8 weeks at a time, tips like TSA precheck, checked bags, etc are less of an issue. If you travel frequently, carry on only is essential to save time (I've waited 2 hrs for bags) as well as allow flexibility (standby for earlier flight or other changes in flight). We have reduced it to traveling with just a personal item for a week! It's very liberating when you see how much you can scale down, but only if you are motivated.

    being a flight attendant and working various jobs in the airline industry, a lot of these "tips" or "hacks" make me absolutely cringe. you are allowed to bring mini alcohol bottles through security but they have to adhere to all the liquid restrictions and include them in your liquid bag allotment. IT IS AGAINST MANY AIRLINE'S POLICIES TO CONSUME YOUR OWN ALCOHOL ON BOARD. Be aware that doing this can cause a lot of problems for yourself. Also don't come across as that rude passenger. Now a days almost all seats in an airplane will be full. Pick the seats you actually WANT and stick with them. There is less stress and confusion during boarding. Although people may get away with jumping into the wrong lines, it isn't a good look for you and ticket agents can make remarks on your profile in case you make this a habit for your trip. People pay a lot of money to have these privileges in the airport or fly so much that they are never around their families. You can ALWAYS ask if they don't mind helping you since there is no line. Usually people want to work and help pass the time and you wont come across as trying to "cheat the system". Know the baggage policies for the airline you are flying on and don't be the person trying to sneak on extra baggage. It slows down the boarding process if they ask you to adjust and adhere to the policies. That can create stress for you and other passengers. Honestly you could go through your whole traveling experience using these sneaky hacks and not have any issues, but if you get caught, it really isn't worth the headache or added stress. I DO LOVE THE TIP TO ALWAYS HAVE A PEN!!!!!!!

    • @blondevlogger
      @blondevlogger 6 років тому +4

      Jennifer Henke thank you for saying this! I thought the alcohol thing was common knowledge as it says it on the airline menu and/or seatback pocket card.
      Also just picking the seat you actually want and stick with it because it makes it easier for everyone. Especially if someone has a special request or special meal. As someone who requests a special meal every time, I try my best to be as polite and not-needy as possible for flight attendants

    • @islandmama

      I love the tip to bring something nice for the Flight attendants.
      Although not for the reason she said.. special treatment.
      Most people don't realize that serving passengers and being at their beck and call is not the full job description of a flight attendants. GA's are there to keep you safe. Yet people are so rude to them. People tip servers but not FA's.
      Here hack should be be polite to your flight attendants, they are not there to be your slave but rather to keep you safe and that is why they want you to follow the rules.

    The TRVL pillow or knock off is one of the best things out there. I sleep so much better on planes now. Face masks also. Hotel slippers. Ear Plugs if you need it. My kids have flown Business Class and grumble when they pass it to head to economy- I make them an amenity kit of snacks, treats, toys to elevate the economy experience. They love it and are worried they will not get it when we fly Business again. To promote carryon only, ebooks and not books. Packing light and never checking is key to saving time, flexibility. I rarely even use a carryon anymore. We started using personal item (18x14x8in) so there is no additional costs for discount airlines, international short flights. Just returned from a 7d trip to Peru where my daughter and I shared a personal item.

    Miles and points are the best kind of rabbit hole to get stuck into. Especially when you get into the more advanced tricks :
    Like the idea of booking a round trip award ticket with United on Swiss from say Paris to Geneva and back just so you can use their obscure "Excursionist Perk" to get a free flight between those dates from say Cape Town to Accra, Ghana. Just have to leave a big enough gap in your schedule to nest in that African flight
    16,000 United miles and $80 to fly round trip in Europe and get a free $400 flight across Africa is a win win IMO

    I’m a working gate agent. Nothing annoys me more then passengers trying to pass off extra bags as shopping items or food items. It DOES NOT matter!!! You are allowed one carryon size bag that FITS easily in the Airline you are traveling on baggage sizer, and one SMALL personal item that can fit under YOUR seat. This is a FAA regulation! It is not the airline or agent trying to make your life harder!! You as the pax can be fined for this as well as the airline. It could also cause DELAYS in flights causing others to miss connections. So PLEASE please be considerate of your fellow pax riders and abide all rules. The rules are there for YOUR safety.

    FYI, you totally CAN bring the alcohol bottles in your 3-1-1 bag with other liquids. You however ARE NOT allowed to mix your own drinks in flight. It is against the law, and getting caught is BIG trouble.
    And ditto to what others said about scents. Even essential oils can be too much for people who are sensitive. Use them in the more open area of the airport when you land if you must, but do NOT use any smelly things on the plane. That goes for smelly food too!

    True story! I recall last year’s vacation to Santiago de Chile to meet family members, and on the MEL leg of the flight, we had so much carry-on (checked baggage tends to have gifts for family members) to the tune of an extra bag of souvenirs. Gate agents had question marks, but flight crew fortunately confirmed there was space in the utility closet (all the bathroom tissue is stored there) on the plane, to store all the extra baggage when there is none left in the overhead. Ask nicely if there is empty room in the utility closet, you never know.

  • @missmayflower
    @missmayflower 6 років тому +66

    Nope. You can carry those little bottles of alcohol, but it’s illegal to drink them on the plane. Very rude to use essential oils as they give lots of people allergic reactions. Note: quite often, if you check in online and print your boarding pass and go straight to security because you’re not checking baggage, the agent at the gate will need to verify your passport for international flights. So go there first, before they start calling people to do that and a lineup forms.

    • @jackywingfield2300
      @jackywingfield2300 5 років тому

      I’m not going to tip-toe around because somebody “may be” allergic to essential oils. It’s not rude at all. I’m allergic to latex but I don’t find it rude that doctors use latex gloves, or there’s latex balloons at parties. It’s life. It happens. I just keep allergy meds on me, like most people do when they go into public and they know they could be exposed to their allergy at any time.

    • @DOOMGENERATION
      @DOOMGENERATION 5 років тому +3

      Just looking at Jacky's thumbnail shows she's a young girl without much life experience. A latex balloon or latex gloves is quite a different thing than the air you have to breathe to survive. It's a small packed airplane where you can't just open the window for fresh air or avoid it in any other way by choosing a different seat. Said allergies can cause life threatening situations for some people. From asthma attack to allergic shock. I had no idea there's a doctor with latex gloves sitting next to you and touching you every moment of every flight. And don't get me started with all the balloons on airplanes! Jeez!

    • @jackywingfield2300
      @jackywingfield2300 5 років тому +1

      scalpelli My throat literally swells as well as my eyes, and I get physically ill. Believe me, I know what life threatening allergies look like. Also, latex is in MUCH more than just “balloons and gloves”. My last attack was brought on by a nipple on a baby bottle. I didn’t even touch it. But I’m not going to demand people not bring it on a plane. It’s one thing if people are using a diffuser and filling the plane with oils, but if someone chooses to rub a little on their temples you probably won’t even notice. Life needs to move on, people need to move on. If you’re not prepared for certain situations that you know can cause life threatening harm to you, that’s nobody’s fault but you’re own.

    I love so many of these tips. Here are a couple you recommended that aren't great, though: carrying more than two items on the plane, even if you got a bag from a store, WILL get you stopped by gate agents, and it should. Please don't recommend ideas that violate the rules and affect the space available to other passengers on the flight. That's not cool. Also, same goes for the essential oils. Just no. Even if you use them before you get on the flight, strong smells are a no-no. Personal alcohol is an FAA violation, so you're actually recommending that people break the law. You can be kicked off of the flight for that, so I would definitely NOT suggest it. Booking in the back may have gotten you more likely to get an empty seat in the past, but it doesn't now. Flights are nearly always fully booked, so the back gets you a lot more noise, late getting off the plane, and nothing else.

    • @lindsey3261
      @lindsey3261 6 років тому +2

      Totally agree with carrying more than 2 items. I find it extremely annoying when I see people do this, and I do almost every flight. Especially being most airlines allow a FREE checked bag. Not only that, they make some people check their ONE carry-on bag because others are taking up available space with this "hack" you use and are encouraging. Not cool or fair to the ones abiding by the rules and regulations.

    Yes the TSA will allow you to bring minis of alcohol. It's illegal, however, to drink any alcohol on a US flight that is not provided by the flight crew. This is a law and not an airline rule; it's intended to allow the flight attendants to monitor your drinking and not to drive alcohol sales onboard. Note that this also applies to Duty Free purchases; don't drink it on the plane!

    Hi thanks for all the tips. I'm going to Canada this summer and i'm quite anxious (i've never taken the plane before and i'm all by myself). I have to make a stopover which brings me to my question: does anyone know where my luggage goes? Do i have to go to the checkout again? Or does the luggage travel to my final destination without me and I only have to take care of my carry-on?Thank you!

      DED Bear Yes! Your checked baggage goes to your end destination. (You've probably learned that already, but I saw that no one had answered you, so I wanted to help.) :)

    Travel hack: Don't drink the water on a plane. They never clean the water tank, and the fill connection for it is just inches away from the sewage drain connection.

      oy thanks for the warning! not that I drink much water or anything on a plane as I hate having to go to any public bathroom except if necessary & so fewer liquids mean fewer visits as possible! lol

    I'm going away for a week and I was wondering if I could bring only a bag for under the seat and an overhead or could I bring a third bag as well?

    When I fly it's nice to give chocolates to the flight attendants. They love it and they offered free drinks to me 😍

    With my 300+ flights in 6 years I prefer seats at the very back of the cabin. I've even had a couple of flights with the whole aft cabin to myself. Let alone the g-force in the unlikely event of a direct impact is 2-3 times less than that at the nose of an aircraft(where it may reach unsurvivable 12-15g). Some other hacks: 1. you may wanna exploit the nursery/infants room to change, have a sit when (and typically) it is empty. 2. Carry lil handy scales to check you baggage everywhere you go (keep it in your carry-on) - and allow 0.5kg less than what is included. Airport scales are not always precise and may trigger the agent to show you who you really are. 3.play with the put-on, personal items, carry-on and checked-in combination. You only pay for the last one. Make sure your carry-on doesn't look big even if it's within limits. Agents are different. You won't win this court case in front of the counter with 1 minute till the check-in deadline cutoff. 4. Check the upgrade at the counter/boarding. Some airlines upgrade really cheap when seats are empty. 5 many more, but got tired of typing. It takes experience to become proficient, but its never late to learn from others mistakes.

    Maybe because I am a frequent traveller, I didn’t hear anything I don’t already know. I would like to add more. Check out the airport site map if it’s your first time there, especially if you have a short transit time. You can even check out where the Gates are, though be prepared for last minute changes. If you have a long layover , check out where rest areas are and what food is available so if you don’t use a lounge, you can have access to these. Some airports like Incheon , Changi and Ho Chi Minh even have areas you can snooze comfortably so if you arrive late at night and don’t want to check into a hotel till the next day , you can avail yourself of these. Some airports have shower facilities that you use either free or with a small charge , good for transits.
