    I watched a bunch of your videos before I got my beloved Zero S. I'm in Belfast, and I got mine from the EEMC, so no chance of a test ride. I was confident I'd made the right choice though, and the UA-cam community's content was absolutely vital. NewZeroLand's channel was great for an insight into living with the bikes, and there are a few channels that review bikes from a journalistic perspective. What I like about your videos is the detail...maybe makes for less entertainment, but your style is comprehensive, which was really useful to me. See, I ride delivering food full-time, so my purchase was a business decision, even though my heart was set. The nitty-gritty you get into, with charge times, battery life, reliability, optionality, etc, really helped me to feel like I wasn't letting my heart rule my head. Most especially, as an economics student and proud miser, your focus on cost/benefit analysis really appeals to the part of me that enjoys working a good spreadsheet!
    As for this video, well, first point is, I see your Caberg Duke II in blue. I got mine because of its unmatched combination of safety performance and low price, and I figure your logic was probably very similar. Very validating! Also, the blue is by far the most fetching available colour. On the subject of Energica...short of unexpected wealth coming my way, I'm left counting down the days until I can access my pension...only another 21 years to go!

      Hey, thanks for the comment and kind words. Yes, you've pretty much nailed my approach and I agree it's less entertaining than many others, many of whom I enjoy - Sam and Jen of NewZeroland being right up there. 👍
      I figured I could deal with a lot of the facts and figures around the bikes rather than talk solely about the ride. As I prefer to focus on the ride while I'm riding, it gives the advantage of being able to pick out some nicer footage and script over that.
      I also believe in being objective and not pretending that all is wonderful when it isn't. That's an underlying gripe I have with some EV advocates. If you go around saying that everything is perfect, there's no reason for anyone to strive for improvement. Honesty will reap far more benefits and trust in the long term.
      Yes, I'm really pleased with the Caberg Duke 2. It's actually the second one I've had, as I was so impressed with the first one. Prior to that I'd had the Schuberth C3 Pro, which people raved about, but frankly the Caberg is every bit as good, if not better in terms of comfort, faired better in tests, and cost a fraction of the price.
      I think the Zero S is a sound choice for what you're doing and I imagine the long-term fuel and servicing savings will be quite substantial. 👍😊

      @@jtchivers You're absolutely right: my income's maxed out at the rate I can deliver food, subject to safe riding at sensible velocities. The game is to reduce costs as far as possible, and from the fuel economy, to servicing, to free road tax, the S is an absolute winner.
      I did say "maybe" less entertaining...no accounting for taste! I recall the old BBC mantra: to educate, inform, and entertain. I've always believed that everyone has an equal right to an opinion, but that some opinions are more insightful than others, and therefore of more use. If you list the facts the way you do, it puts the conclusions you draw into context. Made me a lot more confident about handing over the funds to Alec over at the EEMC, and I haven't had a single moment of regret.

    Thanks for the excellent review can't wait for a test ride. I have an Energica dealer a few miles from my house , that upright position one is on my radar. I saw an Ego , build quality was superb. Real Italian head turner. But to much lean angle for my liking though. I have a Super Duke R which has great ergos. Sure hope I can tour with it using Tesla chargers.

      I agree on the angle on the Ego. Way too racey for me, but like many race bikes it looks good. I rode the old model Esse Esse 9, but I must admin the Eva Ribelle fits well between the two.

    Excellent video John, lots of very good and articulate info and good photography. FWIW I rode the first Energica Ego at the Tuscan launch in 2013, so I'd say the Energica company was started before 2014! (I also first met Livia & the CRP crew who founded Energica when they were racing in the UK back in 2010). I wouldn't call the Ego a 'racing bike' either. It's a sports bike, and of course it has a full fairing, which the Eva lacks, along with its more sporty riding position. Also, it's not really fair to compare the DSR to the Eva Ribelle - you need to compare it with an SR/F or an SR/S (happy to lend a hand!). Nevertheless, there's no question that the Energicas are the new kings of long distance electric riding with that 21.5kWh battery, and I can't wait to have a decent long ride on one too! (It's just a shame that they're not remotely aerodynamic!).You're right about the LiveWire not charging as quickly, despite its CCS. Finally, I spotted a typo in the text near the end, where you said 'do it for me' but the script said 'so it for me'. Keep up the good work! PNB

      Apologies to any Italian speakers if I get it wrong! 😁

    Great review John. I really liked your justification for spending £25k on a bike. Still half the cost of running a Tesla and if you’re doing more miles on a bike anyway…. It’s great fodder for the man maths part of my brain and something my wife might even swallow! 😉

    Hi and thanks for the video. Very good coverage and informative. Only problem is the price. If they can bring it down to around the £20000 mark I am sure they would sell loads. You can just about buy any bike with that amount of money, and that's the problem Energica have. Do I buy a race bike?, perhaps a Triumph Rocket 3? ect.... when faced with these other options it's hard to see many people buying Energica models. What do you think?

    • @jtchivers
      @jtchivers  2 роки тому

      I'm sure if they could economically do it cheaper, they would. It's already a tough market for normal motorcycle manufacturers and given the greater opposition to the notion of electric motorcycles by many bikers, I imagine they'll do what they can to sell more units.
      The price is indeed high, but people spend three or four times that amount on a car, which I can't personally understand and yes, you might choose to buy a Rocket 3, but I'd have this any day over a Rocket 3 (and old friend had one) or any racing bike, come to that, and the comparative running costs are considerably lower, of course. The economics of ownership don't just stop at the purchase price, after all.
      Everyone has different priorities. For me, I do more miles a year on motorbike than in a car, so I can justify spending more on a bike to myself than I would on a car.
      If however, I was a Sunday afternoon, summer only kind of rider, who did under 1000 miles a year, this would be a rather expensive toy.
      But then again, people quite happily spend money on all sorts to make themselves happy. I never understood smoking on many levels, but people happily spend stupid money killing themselves in that way.

    Top notch review John, thanks.
    It's a beautiful bike but is it that much better than my Zero srs with a 12kw charge tank? They're lending the Evo to me next year and I'll see how it goes. Two immediate things that could put me off are the louder than normal noise and the big possible deal breaker, that chain. I'm sick of dirty, oily back wheels as it is. Cheers. ☺

      Thanks, Russ!
      I have an upcoming video showing my ride from Lowestoft to Land's End in one day. It wasn't without its own challenges, but the ability to maintain true road speeds without compromise and 24 kW charging definitely made it an easier prospect. 👍
      I think whether it's better or not really depends on what you want to do with it. You know that the Zero bikes will cover most riding requirements.
      I wanted to know whether the Energica bikes could viably take the place of my petrol bike too for longer trips and touring.
      I hear you on the chain though. I really like not having an oily mess around my Zero DSR. 👍😁

    i wish they had 22kw AC as well as DC charging

    • @anxiousappliance
      @anxiousappliance 2 роки тому

      Does anything have 22kw AC? Could be faster though; 7.7 would be a nice number to shoot for.

    • @MostlyBonkers
      @MostlyBonkers 2 роки тому

      You’d need some seriously beefy electronics to achieve that. AC charging is the equivalent of carrying an oil refinery around with you. DC appeals because all the power electronics are housed in the pump where they should be. AC charging is great for destination charging and 3kW chargers are a nice sweet spot between size, weight and performance. I think rapid chargers will become more commonplace over the next few years and we’ll start to see them in places we actually want to stop for a coffee or meal. Service stations are soulless places at the best of times…
      Hope this helps. 😊

    Tell that to marc from Marc travels about electric bikes touring he has a naked zero not as good as an energica

    • @jtchivers
      @jtchivers  3 місяці тому

      I've been following Marc since his UK trip and I actually think he is better off with an AC charging bike for the journey he's undertaking and his own circumstances of not being in a particular hurry.
      Personally, I would have chosen the Zero DSR/X (as per my video at ua-cam.com/video/Z1RKE5p655Q/v-deo.html) or my own former Zero model , the DSR, since either are better suited to off-road riding than the SR/F, but Marc bought what he could and he's managing pretty well.
      The reason I'd go for a Zero over an Energica on such a trip is down to the faster AC charging on a Zero and the higher availability of AC charging on such a journey. With a 6 kW charging set-up on my old Zero DSR, I could charge in around 90 minutes. It would take twice that with my Energica, with slower AC charging.
      The 24 kW DC charging possessed by the Energica range is brilliant when you can use it (in nations with higher provision of rapid charging), but not in places with low availability of DC rapid charging, where the Zero range will typically charge faster than an Energica on a dedicated AC Type 2 connection.
      Taking the rapid-charging DC Harley Davidson bikes over the AC charging Zero DSR was a mistake Charley Boorman and Ewan McGregor made on their Long Way Up trip, meaning they were having to wait four times as long to charge on dedicated AC points than it used to take me with my Zero DSR.
      That said, there's little difference if charging wholly on domestic power sockets.

    You could have been the first Englishman to pronounce "Energica" correctly but you failed, and pronouncing it how anyone else does. T_T
    And Ego is technically Latin/Greek in origin, at least that's what I think... I don't know about Energica explicitly stating it.
    So I guess the pronounce with a softer G is better, I heard "eco" instead of ego. Otherwise I prefer the English pronounciation. xD
    You called this message when you pointed that you are a linguist. :P

    • @jtchivers
      @jtchivers  Рік тому

      I'm a linguist but not an Italian speaker. 😉
      However, I do now know how to pronounce it properly now (with stress on the second syllable), as I watched an interview with CEO Livia Cevolini. My more recent video (ua-cam.com/video/_flIPqnjeOI/v-deo.html) has it corrected, as I mention 2 minutes in. 😁👍
      Hey, at least I rolled the R!
      And I do agree on the soft G in Ego. That is how I hear it, which may may sound more like a C to you, but was definitely intended as a soft G
      But perhaps I'll just go with how everyone else pronounces stuff. I have similar ongoing battles with Givi (I say "Jivi", most Brits pronounce the G as and English G) and let's forget about Kärcher! Even their own English language marketing doesn't pronounce their own brand name correctly!
