  • Recreating a journey I did in 2017 over six days on my Zero DSR electric motorbike. Five years later I did the same journey from Land's End to John O'Groats and then to Skaw at the very top of Shetland with friend and fellow EV advocate, James Coates.
On this occasion, we're both riding Energica EVA Ribelle electric motorcycles. I'm riding my own 2022 Ribelle, which I took delivery of on 28 April, 2022 and James is riding the higher spec 2021 Ribelle RS, kindly on loan from Energica UK and The English Electric Motor Company.
I'll be publishing further materials, including a breakdown of each stop and various stats on my website (www.johnchivers.com/lejogskaw....
James' video account, focusing on the Land's End to John O'Groats part of the journey is at • Lands End To John O'Gr... . You can subscribe to his and Kate's channel, / james0852 , which features a wide arrange of EV models and know-how presented by James and Kate.

Thanks for highlighting whats possible and also the issues with these bikes.
Im wanting to get back in the saddle but really unsure what to get,
In the past i commuted for a year though winter etc so got a fairly good grounding, later on got a xv535 rode it as a fun machine, went all over the country but ultimately found its tank too small for that and wanted more power, rode my mates gpz900r a few times and then got married and kids came along etc, 20 years on and im thinking its time to get back to it.
I like the idea of electric , the xv535 was nice because i didnt need too much gear changes.
The zero sr seems a perfect fit but i read a lot about issues with it, the biggest worry being water getting into the electronics and battery causing very expensive repair costs.
The ribelle is tempting , but id be buying used , no way im oaying new prices.

Greetings from India, I am a doctor and ride multiple EVs as it is my passion, now have a tiny electric motorcycle Revolt RV400 with an electric scooter and a Harley Davidson. I have watched multiple videos at UA-cam, but this is the first time I watched a video multiple times. Wow man this is so neat and helpful. My heartiest greetings to you two and invitation to come at my place with those giants. You really have skills to stick people to watch the video.

Amazing to compare your trip to our Austria trip of 1000 miles 29hrs & 19 stops 20mins average stopage on 43kw AC.
    Well done.

Cheers, Pal! Your Zoe trip was epic!
The bikes are definitely still behind cars in development, but it just shows the difference in tech over the last five years, when it took me four days on the Zero DSR (ok, I *could* have done it faster), compared to the 29.5 hours that considerably faster charging enabled: 20-24 kW compared to 3 kW. 😂

I just had Alec from English Electric Motor Co up here in Ayrshire doing my annual service on my Zero DS. I am still riding my DS 11kW with the 7.2 battery as a light runabout and it's doing great for the low mileage I put on it. Over the past four years it has only done 3300 miles, give or take. I don't commute and I don't tour so it makes a wonderful, fun and affordable runabout for the local farm shops and the odd trip to town.
I understand why you upgraded from your Zero as the charging situation in the UK has changed a lot in the past couple of years.

I've been neglecting your channel for a while. Apologies for that, John. We bought an EV last year, and it kind of took over UA-cam EV viewing. It was James's video which sent me back here! Great Video John, thanks for a ll the detail! I too have the same concerns about the cruise control button placement,, it needs to be on the left control area. I've killed the bike before and had to pull over to restart, not ideal when on a dual carriageway with no hard shoulder!

    Hi John,
Fantastic and thorough coverage in your video thank you. You said James RS bike setup was hard/uncomfortable for him, I understand the front & rear suspension is adjustable, did he try that or was it more technical than that, I'd be interested to know please? Cheers.

      Thanks, Gary.
He didn't adjust it, so if it had been a matter of keeping the bike for longer, I'm sure he would have done. As he was borrowing it, it was just left as he picked it up, so there would have been scope to soften it out a bit. Mine was fine for me. 👍

Picked up his loan Ribelle on Friday 10th June eh? So that's why EEMC suddenly cancelled my loan of the Ribelle with 2 days notice after I'd planned a whole week off! Well, looks like my £25k won't be going there then!

    • @jtchivers
      @jtchivers  Рік тому

In their defence, we'd had the trip planned for months, so I don't think it was a case of the rug being pulled out from under your feet because James borrowed the bike. They'd agree to lend us both bikes for the week months in advance, before I decided to buy my own. I know they had dealership events on around the time and needed the range of bikes at those, so perhaps that was the issue. Initially, he was going to be riding the Ego, then they changed it a few months before to the EssEsse9 and then again a few weeks before to the Ribelle RS. He got what they had available, but as I say, it was booked in months before.
Not great if you'd planned time off though. I appreciate that.

@@jtchivers Just checked my emails and mine (RS) was booked 15th Feb. I had a hiccup in April but managed to get two of my instructors to change their holiday plans for this. EEMC said one had been dropped on a demo but I'd already enquired about px-ing my bike so it wasn't like I was a typical test vlogger, I had the money waiting if the ride went well but their priorities were elsewhere. Your friend was offered the RS only 2 weeks before your trip so you can probably understand why I'm miffed, they took my demo away and got their priorities wrong.
I'll be doing my long term owner's review when I can be bothered but safe to say with my overall experience of Zero and dealers I'll be leaving electric for now. My two year warranty expires October so I may have an expensive paperweight if it packs up again
Hope you had a good holiday and your friend bought the RS. 😉

@@RoadcraftNottingham Obviously James and I weren't aware of any of your plans, but we originally approached EEMC in August last year and got agreement. He was due to do the 2017 trip with me, but he missed out on that for the reasons I cover in this video. We booked ferries and holidays months in advance, so none of it was last minute from our perspective, but it sounds like he did have prior booking on that basis and he did put a deposit down on the EXPERIA actually while we were on the trip.
None of which makes it any better from your perspective, of course, but I don't think any resentment needs to come our way. Clearly, I'm not privy to any arrangements EEMC made otherwise or plans which had to change, but they obviously did need to change plans, given the change in bike they offered James.
Sounds like you've had a bad time with your SR/S anyway, and that's lousy. I really enjoyed my DSR and once they resolved the dying onboard charger issues, it was rock solid for the last three years of ownership. I was extremely taken by the SR/S (and the SR/F before it), but I couldn't justify swapping the DSR for what was little benefit to me after I'd had the 6 kW Charge Tank fitted to my DSR. And it looks like the Gen3 bikes have presented their own issues, which is profoundly disappointing. I won't entertain another Zero again until they adopt DC, though I have to say, I had few complaints about my DSR and I do miss it. I just couldn't do longer touring trips on it in any sensible time scales.

    • @jtchivers

Well, the lack of liquid battery cooling makes it a potential issue, but I think our journey demonstrates that with the right approach, very long journeys are possible. We were riding or charging for the best part of 30 hours on the main leg from Land's End to John O'Groats and the bikes coped admirably.
