Great video as always! I love the car and I find myself checking up on it. The best BMW engine yet but there are always problems if the owner isn't diligent. With great power comes great responsibility. People are willing to spend a good chunk of change on a vehicle and they want power and to not even think about it. With the simplicity of an electric system I can't see engines going on as the primary power plant for cars. Hopefully governments will see the novelty and understand why buyers want the drama.

More boost can create more crankcase pressure, but a proper PCV system will prevent an excessive buildup of pressure. Other manufacturers do lots of boost without issue. It's a design problem.
I'm Chinese and I barely use Chinese parts for my N52 as genuine BMW parts last longer and less issues afterwards, unless the CCV on the valve cover has to be changed individually (without changing the valve cover as the CCV is built in the cover and no genuine BMW CCV for the black cover N52)
My friend had issues @ 5k miles with the engine consuming too much oil. It got so bad to where the car was spitting out so much fumes and “hotboxed” the cabin of the car
Boost pressure is not going to be the root cause of oil pan/valve cover gasket leaks. Those have been bmw issues since forever and trust me, that's long before they were turbocharging their street engines. The root cause of those leaks boils down to gasket materials and heat cycling. It's going to happen to literally every car out there today. Coolant loss can be as simple as replacing the main circuit reservoir cap, you'll see the residue on the threads if this is the case. Worst case you have a leak from the intake manifold where the liquid to air intercooler is located and will have to replace it. Also keep in mind that these engines reverted to a mechanical water pump mounted to the engine block for the main circuit and therefore it can leak. Head gasket failure is quite rare for these engines. Pcv issues are common on this engine series. The first gen b58 has a serviceable pcv diaphragm that can tear which will cause a crazy amount of smoke at idle, luckily it's a $30 part that's easily replaced. The 2nd and 3rd gen b58 do not utilize this and if you have one you will have to replace the valve cover. Fuel injectors can be problematic for this engine and a leaky injector can cause engine damage, ive certainly heard of more than a few injector failures occurring with this engine that have caused serious problems for their owners.

I'm getting an m140i pretty soon, heard of the usual coolant loss, oil filter damage and exhaust valve spring rattle. First I've heard of the ignition coils, that was a snag on the N55 35i engines and older straight 6's, never heard of it on B58 40i engines until now. Coolant loss almost always shows up no leaks when checked so just keep topping it up and it doesn't seem manifest itself into anything. Most common is exhaust valve spring rattle, easily fixed as you and many others have shown. Only other thing I can think, servicing wise I don't think they have a service interval for the ZF gearbox fluid, but ZF themselves recommend something like 60k miles off the top of my head? Worth considering if you're going to be owning the car long term as I believe even at an Indy you're looking at £300 minimum. And that's one thing you should be careful with who you trust to do that gearbox service. I'd only take mine to a BMW Indy that's done plenty as there are quite a few things to go wrong by all accounts.
Wait till mid 2022 before buying a m140i used car prices are off the roof at the moment, I was gonna grab a 2017 shadow edition with 25k miles for 17 grand auto box, now same cars risen to 22 grand
They will leak, when I bought my car I did a visual inspection of it prior to purchase and it was clean, replaced my brakes a month later and caught it leaking so brought it straight back to bmw and had it resealed under warranty. They utilize rtv for the gasket, it was like 40 bucks for the sealant and all the oil pan bolts, 1300 bucks for labor cause the front subframe has to be dropped to remove the pan.
If this is considered a reliable bmw engine, I'm scared to find out what the less-reliable bmw engines do lol. I'll postpone my purchase for now. Thanks!
I can't understand why BMW persists with the silly plastic valve cover. Mercedes does not do this madness and doesn't have these silly issues with valve timing solenoids etc. I think a Merc might have similar "issues" in terms of quantity to a BMW, but the Mercedes seem to built for better long term durability. On VANOS solenoids, change the oil every 7,500 to 10,000 km instead of the silly long recommended interval and you can avoid that issue in my experience. The oil filter issue is shocking. They never had this issue in the past in my experience but they also never used to bury these under the freakin' intake manifold which BMW chose to do on this engine for a reason that is beyond comprehension. On ignition coils, I swapped all of mine at 180K km when they didn't fail on my N55. With BMW's failure to address these issues and the stupid oil filter and timing chain locations, I'm thinking it's time to switch to something simpler and better thought out.
Yeah i have a b58 gen1 m140i it take not even 2min of driving and it up to temperature then it foot to the floor i haven't had one problem i don't know what this guy's talking about
Nearly any timing chain vehicle you buy has plastic guides, ive been in this business for nearly 20 years and never heard of metal guides in any modern engine so there's that. B58 utilizes a mechanical water pump bolted to the block for the main circuit, so if it fails you'll at least spot a leak instead of just having no coolant flow out of nowhere.
Really wish I could. No word of a lie, I have just been diagnosed with a illness and my doctor and hospital said its because of the stress of the car and UA-cam in my life. So I can vouch for that and say you're right, But these cars are a bad bad addiction like a drug im not joking. NOTHING ELSE feels the same and level of technology I cant live without as I love technology and the latest stuff, Otherwise I think my health would re improve and so would my quality of sleep all together. As I don't even sleep worrying about the things over night getting robbed or stolen or not starting or if I'm gonna be able to source parts. BMW is a constant worry and think of it as having a wife and baby, These cars are for people who don't have anything else but there car to care about, and believe me if I didn't have this channel I would drive a Mercedes.

@@prometheustv2084 The price is only going to rise. It's already a classic.
Love how no one brings up my 540i😌
Is it reliable ? I am looking 2018 2019 540i
Oil pan gasket issues?
They will leak, when I bought my car I did a visual inspection of it prior to purchase and it was clean, replaced my brakes a month later and caught it leaking so brought it straight back to bmw and had it resealed under warranty. They utilize rtv for the gasket, it was like 40 bucks for the sealant and all the oil pan bolts, 1300 bucks for labor cause the front subframe has to be dropped to remove the pan.
If this is considered a reliable bmw engine, I'm scared to find out what the less-reliable bmw engines do lol. I'll postpone my purchase for now. Thanks!
😂
Depends on the x5 bmw you choose lol. Which is bmws most unreliable suv I think it’s really the weight
11k my fuel pump just decided to stop working....
You miss m240i
Ahhh i'm not a mechanic so i have no chance to buy this
🙏🏻🙏🏻
Yeah i have a b58 gen1 m140i it take not even 2min of driving and it up to temperature then it foot to the floor i haven't had one problem i don't know what this guy's talking about
Are they still using Plastic Timing Chain Guides and Water Pump Assemblies??...if so they will never be a vehicle i buy
then dont and fuck off
Nearly any timing chain vehicle you buy has plastic guides, ive been in this business for nearly 20 years and never heard of metal guides in any modern engine so there's that. B58 utilizes a mechanical water pump bolted to the block for the main circuit, so if it fails you'll at least spot a leak instead of just having no coolant flow out of nowhere.
@@JeeperZJ Lexus for the win!
Best thing to do is to avoid this brand alltogether :))) live a more relaxed and healthier life.
@@BMWDoctor I can totally relate, take care and stay safe. Wishing you all the best!
@@BMWDoctor are Mercedes’ more reliable?
@@BMWDoctor I have a Camry V6 that has very low mileage. Silky smooth V6, 0-60 in around 5.5-6 seconds! I’d love to experience a BMW one day, but I think after reading about their supposedly most reliable engine, the most I’d do is lease one. I’m keeping my Camry for another 20 years at this rate.
This guy really knows his beans..
To any talking most the things wrong with this motor is common in most turbo motors
Mechanically reliable, Yes. However, there are still 100s of junk BMW electrical parts on it that make it function.
DR.BMW I REALLLLY REALLY NEED YOUR HELP I WILL PAY YOU FOR YOUR ADVICE DO YOU HAVE AN EMAIL WHERE WE CAN COMMUNICATE. IF SO PLEASE SEND IT .. BTW I LOVE WHAT YOUR DOING . Thanks
I think I'm going with a Q50 after this video 😆
All the same crap as the older engines. Amazes me BMW cannot fix the same issues they had forever.
No your wrong ! It ain’t the engines that’s unreliable, it’s the owners.
At this rate, it’s more of a feature, rather than an issue
Why are there so much PLASTIC components in the engine area amongst German Lux cars?
It's not only germans. All od them use the damn plastic for the same components...
BMW should partner with Toyota Denso more and move away from Bosch
I have n55 in the X3, and n55 update in the m235i in both explode the charge Pipe, in my m140i the engine explode the cylinder #1 with only 7000 kms BMW dont give me warranty, has engine, has company, doesn't recommend.😐🔥🏎️ 25.000 usd to buy a new engine
Bro who is charging you 25 k for a n55 lmao the dealer ??
@@MultiBluedog123 Better question, why is he blowing up so many engines and charge pipes?
Been driving an N55 in a 2014 535xi GT. The car weights over 4K pounds, and no catastrophic issues.
BMW is suck! never rectified thier problem after so many generation...!
Not so sure about reliability after just 105,000 miles...
This is not spam... I really need help with this.
My 2017 BMW 540i G30 just burned a valve #4 cylinder. (105k miles) I had the vsfr high flow cat, upgraded charge pipe, k&n air filter, new B58TU Fuel pump, and Bootmod3 Stage 2+ 93 octane.
I am beyond depressed!😢 I am a Single Dad with 1 special needs, child.
I was told I need a new engine that will cost 21k installed. I just can't! 😭
I still owe 25k, and it is my only car. I have nothing right now and am about to lose my job. I can't get my kids to the doctors, etc... If you can please reach out to your connections and see if they can help, I would be forever grateful 🙏
