Dudes, dudes...you simply must react to this song at the Pulse Concert live...David Gilmour, the band were just at their apex...the guitar solo, the light show...just incredible
The Pulse concert is a must for a live version of this song. Not only do they sound wonderful, but the light show they had going during the song was amazing in itself. David Gilmour's solos are out of this world.
I get not reacting to a song for the first time live, that the studio version is better, but, this is the exception. The Pulse concert performance is (in my biased opinion) the best live performance of a song ever. As for the solo live… you’ll see why it should be this version.
Everytime I hear this song I alternatingly want to weep and laugh. After almost 43 years I've come to regard it as a 'prayer' of sorts, a 'liturgy' in some sense. It is imperative that I experience Comfortably Numb at least once a week, with earphones.
such an intense song ! and the solo, EPIC ! i had this same 'balloon hands' when i was 8 yrs old with the flu and 103 fever. my hands felt large, tingly, fuzzy and i couldn't put them together . (like magnets) i am 60 yrs old and still remember this experience vividly
The thing that is so damn clever about Pink Floyd is that even after hearing the songs hundreds of times, everytime feels like the first time of hearing for me. So layered and complex.
So, as the designated old guy, when I went to college at WKU (Western Kentucky University), there were quarterly Pink Floyd laser-light shows at their Planetarium. You'd get there 30 minutes before sunset; get a comfy-reclining chair with your favorite mind-altering substance, watch a virtual setting of the sun and 5 minutes of education about the night sky and then it would kick in to either Darkside of the Moon, or the Wall. It would include music generated laser-light show, (state of the art during 1979/1980-ish). My preference was DSotM, but Comfortably Numb was great to watch. You then stumbled out and went to a club because it was still early. It was an event that even eclipsed going to the Rocky Horror Picture Show.
Laser Floyd was Awesome! 🙌🏼😁 I too, thoroughly enjoyed those shows, & the mind altering substances 🍃 of the 70's & 80's paired perfectly with Pink Floyd. 😂
I think it was wise to start with the original song rather than the live version. Many of the reactions on UA-cam start with the live version. But it was this version that dominated rock radio back in the day. We heard this song over and over and over again, and it's one of those classic songs you never tire of. In fact, I think the best of the classic rock of this period is going to survive long past the boomer generations. I think it stands with some of the greatest music in history- Bach, Beethoven, Mozart. Add the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Who, Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd to the list.
I'm a rare person that got to see the original Wall shows in 1980. Pink Floyd only performed The Wall tour in three cities in 1980, L.A, NYC, & London. I went to one of the shows in Los Angeles, February 1980. Greatest concert I've ever attended.
Plus, seek out the film, with Bob Geldof playing Pink. Once, while listening to this track, I "felt" myself "leave" my body, a truly unsettling, but, dreamy experience, which strangely tasted divine, too.
I've never quite understood why this song seem to evoke so much emotion in the listener! I have seen many break down into tears after the song! And I will admit, it does me that way!
I've listened to the entire album so many times, it's hard for me to hear a lot of these tracks out of the context of the album, but it is just so brilliant.
This song is IMO Pink Floyd's best. I love the way that Roger sings the downbeat verse and Dave sings the uplifting chorus (and did that amazing guitar solo) - the contrast between the two singers' voices and styles is perfect for the song. The Wall was largely self-therapy by Waters, who had never fully gotten over his father dying in World War II when Roger was a young boy.
This song is even better when you listen to it along with the whole album The album is mind blowing, my dad brought it home when I was 10 yrs old and I couldn’t believe what I was listening to even at that age
i remember being sick as a child and beng out of my mind with pain. I was given Demoral and had the trip of a lifetime. I identify with Comfortable Numb in a very personal way.
About David Gilmour's guitar solos. Many years ago I read in a guitar magazine that David Gilmour is deemed the Undisputed Dean of the Compound Bend. He admits he never was a fast playing guitarist. His solo's aren't necessarily difficult. But his note placement is pretty much flawless. Pink Floyd is my favorite and always will be. And this is my favorite song of all time. Now to your reaction on it. Thank you for actually reacting to it with insight instead of listening and saying, "Well, that was good."
There is no band that compares to Pink Floyd. You'll love the album Animals! Listen to it in it's entirety.. it'll be one of the best experiences of your life. If you're not already in a head change, you will be after riding this album! Love you guys! You are the best music reactors on YT❤️ HAPPY 4TH!
I graduated from high school in 1980, we picked "The Wall" for our senior song. When the printed programs came, and the teachers saw the lyrics to the song, they made us glue the pages together so that no one could see it at graduation. Kind of proved the message of the song.
Once I had a dream that I was walking in the woods and saw this really goofy looking bird sitting on a fence or something. It looked at me and starting making this regular repeated squawk...It was the alarm going off...
The Pulse version is so crazy you should react on it... And I was there (don't say I'm old, please!)... The David Gilmour guitar solo is long and completely amazing, he's not just a performer, he's mainly a story teller, the best guitar solo ever... Pink Floyd is my favorite band, but I'm a real fan of bands from UK in the 70's, Queen, Led Zeppelin, Genesis with Peter Gabriel... And David Bowie, of course... More and more, the UK is the land of big music anyway, you have so much to discover and have real pleasure... Pink Floyd is the band you must listen to the entire albums because most of them have no pause, everything is unchained and it's crazy... The Wall is also a movie, you should watch it with a very good sound, it's a kind of Roger Water's life, some pieces come from his life... My favorite one is "Atom Heart Mother" but it's special, "Meddle" is amazing too... In fact, every album is crazy... Thanks for your reaction, you're young but you like music, love from France 🇫🇷😘
I used to jam to the album on my flute as a teen. Nailed the guitar solo on this piece note for note. Of course, on a flute, embellishing with runs and trills is acceptable, which made this one a real treat. Running quarter time runs in each arpeggio was a real workout! Good times.
Great reaction and review, guys. David Gilmour's guitar work almost always serves the song, and never sounds like "time for the required solo." He creates melody that ties to the song, and one can't imagine the composition not having what he creates. He's a true artist, as well as the other members of the band are or were.
Some of the shimmer is a "high-strung" acoustic guitar, which is basically a 12-string with the lower, wound strings removed, leaving only the thin, higher-tuned strings to be the first ones struck on the downstroke. Brilliant work.
One of my favorites...the entire song is like an ebb and flow, the instruments are a rhythmic come and go...it's the line you're only coming thru in waves...the music is doing that the entire time. Love it!
Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2 has one of the David's most iconic solos ever, along with Comfortably Numb and Time. Other songs with face melting solos worthy of checking out are On The Turning Away, Have A Cigar, and Money. Some live performances are also iconic, such as Sorrow and Learning to Fly from PULSE (the latter being played by Tim Renwick, the guitar player on Life in Dark Water by Al Stewart). Another Brick in the Wall from the same concert is also amazing, with both a CD and a DVD version. Then we have the two long masterpieces that are Shine On You Crazy Diamond and Echoes.
Pulse is great. That being said, I think the studio version should always be heard first. That's the way we heard it when these songs first came out. I saw them live three times in the 80's. There is nothing like it.
ua-cam.com/video/MzypeYQrv5U/v-deo.htmlsi=hpEvxSPhZ0yzHESi Above is the link to a cover version of the guitar solo from "Comfortably Numb" by Kent Nishimura, a 20 year old solo acoustic guitar fingerstyle prodigy. This was a rare time where Kent did not perform an entire version of the song with a guitar arrangement and without other instruments. It's near impossible to match the genius guitar work of David Gilmour, but Kent is a talented musician nonetheless.
I saw this performed live on the Division Bell Tour at Texas Stadium in April of 1994. It had just begun to lightly rain, and the laser lights going through the mist as they played and sang was a sight to see; one that I won't ever forget. Very surreal. Almost like church. I was only 23. Excellent reaction.
I hope you guys will check out Echoes LIVE in Pompeii!! The video with the guys in an amphitheater in Pompeii. No audience, shirtless . 1972 before Dark Side !! Freaking awesome 😎
Michael Kamen was also co-credited with Eric Clapton on the EP of music from the BBC series 'Edge of Darkness,' one of the best drama series of all time. Although I can't find mention on IMDB. I remember seeing the credits on the cassette tape (C1983/4 for filming, 1985 transmitted, first on BBC2, then within months repeated on BBC1) Bob Peck, Joe Don Baker et. al.
I was 17 when I saw them at Madison Square Garden back in the late sixties/early seventies, and I was feeling "comfortably numb" & they were beyond amazing. One of the best concerts I've gone to & I saw a lot of great bands.
I always thought they were talking about life on the road. It’s a hard life. You live separate from the rest of humanity. Your lifestyle is sleeping during the day and living at night. You get sick on the road, but the show must go on. The doctor is giving them something to make it through the night’s performance.
Wow, so once, again you taught me something i should have known a long time ago. I have heard this song so many times... But i never knew what it was called. So i thought i was going to the reaction blind. Nope i know the song. Not only that, i don't know how many times i have sang that "Hello, is anybody in there" to my friends and family if they are not listening to me. 😂 Gotta be in the mood to listen to it. They have great talent! Brick in the Wall is on my playlist. And always interesting to hear the background of the song.
Pink Floyd in Hockenheim Germany on The Division Bell tour is and probably will continue to be the the most musicaly perfect concert I've attended..... Absolutely stunning show from start to finish 🖤🖤
Here's a link to the best live versions (when you're ready, be sure to wear a seatbelt for the outro): ua-cam.com/video/7kWl-ZGMwkQ/v-deo.html Then follow that up with "Sorrow" for guitar sounds that don't exist anywhere else (Gilmour is the guitar GOD): ua-cam.com/video/JdPTec5ADFE/v-deo.html
I think you're absolutely correct to listen to the studio version first, even here. As great as the Pulse version is, and it is amazingly great, hearing it after the studio version will enhance the experience even more! Great review!
Nice reaction guys and thank you for pointing out the orchestral arrangement. All the best from the far north of New Zealand and hey, you'll absolutely love the PULSE concert version of this masterpiece, so much going on!
David Gilmore has the voice of a God and plays the guitar like one too! Just outstanding, every time I hear it and that's many, many, many times. I will never tire of hearing this magic! This music gets into your very being. Pink Floyd are true geniuses. Their music has changed my life.
Such an amazing, amazing song always brings a tear to my eye with the imagery this produces and the arrangement of it. C'est magnifique! 💯✌️🙌 Also makes me feel immensely sad as it reminds me of my late uncle who passed on last year... More of a father figure to me than my own dad was 😢 Great reaction as usual! Definitely react to more of their songs!
I keep telling y'all that music from my day is better than from your day. I was a sophomore in high school when this album was released. What was released when y'all were sophs?
roger waters is the doctor speaking to a patient and david gilmour is the patient trying to respond to him - also on the song TIME did you notice how there are 12 bass drops before the song kicks in - one for each number on a clock face - its all there for a reason - genius - never be another band like them
Well, as a guitar player myself I wouldn't call the second solo like that. It's dramatic but nowhere near hellish or furious. Maybe angry but if you want furious go listen to Dimebag Darrell from Pantera and other guitar legends. Gilmour always has that sweet, bluesy tone.
@aimfuldrifter given what was going on during the recording of the record and given the phrasing, the tone, how he's attacking those licks - I think it's a defensible claim.
Dude.....LIVE. Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes...Zepp.......always choose the LIVE versions. And I felt exactly what was described when I was a child as well.....remember it like it was yesterday. It was like a souls view of your meat suit.
Seen this song branded about for many years but first time I have listened to it in full.Only other song I've heard is Another brick in the wall.Very enjoyable to hear and found out why this group is mentioned in same breath as ELO.....quite similar vocals.good stuff.
I think you find quite a few of their live performances are on a par(some better) w/their studio versions...plus there is the elaborate staging. Try the Pulse live version of this song.
The Albert hall show on pulse is the greatest solo by anyone ever. The pulse live version actually cut out 2 minutes of the second solo… WTF for?! You can find it on you tube. I cry every time I hear it.
Dudes, dudes...you simply must react to this song at the Pulse Concert live...David Gilmour, the band were just at their apex...the guitar solo, the light show...just incredible
The best version of this classic song. Yes, I have seen this song live twice with Floyd, it is that good.
ABSOLUTELY, A MUST !!!!
👍
You really must watch the pulse concert. It will blow your mind.
@@rosemarywoolley8394 If they performed it at Pulse, I don't even bother with a studio version of that particular song
The Pulse concert is a must for a live version of this song. Not only do they sound wonderful, but the light show they had going during the song was amazing in itself. David Gilmour's solos are out of this world.
Yeah, he added a wail to his last solo that made it even better, hard as that is to believe.
Couldn’t agree more. The whole concert is a masterpiece.
The production was basically given a blank check for the 1994 tour.
I saw Pink Floyd in 1994 on the Division Bell tour. My parents got me tix for my 19th birthday. Possibly the best concert I've ever seen.
The live version comments are legit, guys! The PULSE version includes all the greatness of the original and just heaps more greatness into it!!!
I get not reacting to a song for the first time live, that the studio version is better, but, this is the exception. The Pulse concert performance is (in my biased opinion) the best live performance of a song ever. As for the solo live… you’ll see why it should be this version.
*Spot on Louise.*

Absolutely... There are times I have to listen to it every day!!!
"regard it as a prayer" Love this comment!
This album came out when I started high school. What a wonderful time to be alive. We had the best music. This album is a masterpiece ✌️and❤️
Yesssss me too
such an intense song ! and the solo, EPIC ! i had this same 'balloon hands' when i was 8 yrs old with the flu and 103 fever. my hands felt large, tingly, fuzzy and i couldn't put them together . (like magnets) i am 60 yrs old and still remember this experience vividly
The thing that is so damn clever about Pink Floyd is that even after hearing the songs hundreds of times, everytime feels like the first time of hearing for me. So layered and complex.
I agree completely
Greetings from across the pond. Been binge watching your vids over the last few days, good stuff. If you are ever in the UK I'll get you a pint

David is perfect!!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
It’s that reaction at 15:19 from the guy in the middle that basically just says, “this is the greatest sound I will ever hear as long as I live.”
I think it was wise to start with the original song rather than the live version. Many of the reactions on UA-cam start with the live version. I can't agree as the surprise element of that incredible guitar solo will be lost now,my friend.
I was fortunate to see Pink Floyd twice in concert, and both were a feast for the eyes and ears. Guitars want David Gilmour for Christmas.
I had experiences like that when I was young...
My hands felt puffy and expanded...
Balloon like...
Had multiple dreams of this...
Out of the hundreds of concerts I was able to attend, Pink Floyd The Wall at the LA Sports Arena in February of 1980 would have to be the pinnacle.
Pink Floyd are bloody superb! This song is an absolute masterpiece, nice one chaps good choice!
Great song!
I've never quite understood why this song seem to evoke so much emotion in the listener! I have seen many break down into tears after the song! And I will admit, it does me that way!
Arguably one the best solos that soars and transcends like few others. Enjoyed the breakdown.
I've listened to the entire album so many times, it's hard for me to hear a lot of these tracks out of the context of the album, but it is just so brilliant.

How about America⚡ A Horse with no name, James Gang ⚡Funk #49
Tyvm
This song is even better when you listen to it along with the whole album
The album is mind blowing, my dad brought it home when I was 10 yrs old and I couldn’t believe what I was listening to even at that age
Seeing this performed live was absolutely amazing
i remember being sick as a child and beng out of my mind with pain. I was given Demoral and had the trip of a lifetime. I identify with Comfortable Numb in a very personal way.
❤🕊🇬🇧Sending love
This is also a movie. No words can describe. Wish you were here is another song you give a listen.
Great reaction! Also you guys look like meerkats bobbing your heads together .
One doesn't merely listen to Pink Floyd, One experiences them!
About David Gilmour's guitar solos. Many years ago I read in a guitar magazine that David Gilmour is deemed the Undisputed Dean of the Compound Bend. He admits he never was a fast playing guitarist. Did anybody mention Pulse?
There is no band that compares to Pink Floyd. You'll love the album Animals! Listen to it in it's entirety.. it'll be one of the best experiences of your life. Pigs. Three Different Ones.
Yes!! Animals is an amazing album. If I were forced to pick a favorite that would be it.
I graduated from high school in 1980, we picked "The Wall" for our senior song. When the printed programs came, and the teachers saw the lyrics to the song, they made us glue the pages together so that no one could see it at graduation. Kind of proved the message of the song.
Roger Waters explained that the song is not about education. Read his interview with the New York Times.
This song always makes me emotional.
Once I had a dream that I was walking in the woods and saw this really goofy looking bird sitting on a fence or something. It looked at me and starting making this regular repeated squawk...It was the alarm going off...
Love how the three of you were nodding when he asks “just nod if you can hear me”
😎😎😎 Great choice ✌🏼🎧
The Pulse version is so crazy you should react on it... And I was there (don't say I'm old, please!)... I used to jam to the album on my flute as a teen. Nailed the guitar solo on this piece note for note. Of course, on a flute, embellishing with runs and trills is acceptable, which made this one a real treat. Running quarter time runs in each arpeggio was a real workout! Good times.
What a great memory! Hope you still play…..
Pink Floyd has such a uniqueness, it's hard not to at least appreciate them. My top 3 band of all time.
In the 60-70's most of us stayed "comfortably numb".
Great reaction and review, guys. David Gilmour's guitar work almost always serves the song, and never sounds like "time for the required solo." He creates melody that ties to the song, and one can't imagine the composition not having what he creates. He's a true artist, as well as the other members of the band are or were.
I think this is definitely contender for greatest rock solos of all time. It is literally magic.
You guys have got to react to "echoes " by Pink Floyd, specifically the live at Pompeii version
Some of the shimmer is a "high-strung" acoustic guitar, which is basically a 12-string with the lower, wound strings removed, leaving only the thin, higher-tuned strings to be the first ones struck on the downstroke. Brilliant work.
The 'doctor' is a 'doctor feel-good'. He's pushing HEROINE on the character and he's now 'comfortably numb'.
The movie t this album is a masterpiece.
This guitar solo speaks and makes you feel more than a million voices ever could. This and Stairway to heaven have just that something that is special

You guys need to look at a live performance of this song....you will enjoy it even more...Pink Floyd forever
No song deserves applause more than
Comfortably Numb. Others do, but Comfortably Numb draws it out of you with it's brilliance.
I saw this performed live on the Division Bell Tour at Texas Stadium in April of 1994. Please the live version
Guys, the founder of Pink Floyd was SYD BARRETT. You better check it out, because it might blow Your mind. Greetings from Italy.
The Pulse version is the go-to for this one. Greetings from Colombia
SOOOoooooo……..can you do the live Pulse version now? That guitar solo is twice as long…..magnificent!
Pulse live. Epic!
Great reaction.

I think we can safely assume that flat-earthers don't believe in this song! ;-o

Wow, so once, again you taught me something i should have known a long time ago. I have heard this song so many times... But i never knew what it was called. Pink Floyd in Hockenheim Germany on The Division Bell tour is and probably will continue to be the the most musicaly perfect concert I've attended..... Absolutely stunning show from start to finish 🖤🖤

I grew up with this band and still digg them.. i am 59 years now :) Have a nice day.
The solos on gitar.. yes best ever! :)
guys, believe me, the two most brilliant bands are pink floyd and queen
First guitar solo is a teaser...wait for the second!
I always become comfortably numb after a big meal from McDonald's.
Watch the Pulse version, you will enjoy
Live from Pulse, run, now, do it!!!
If you ever want to do the full movie, that would be AMAZING
Thanks for another engaging reaction. I enjoy listening to you guys.
roger waters is the doctor speaking to a patient and david gilmour is the patient trying to respond to him - also on the song TIME did you notice how there are 12 bass drops before the song kicks in - one for each number on a clock face - its all there for a reason - genius - never be another band like them
Solo ends.... followed by speechlessness..... the end
You must watch them live, it's a different world!
"He's a narrator with the guitar".
That's a bingo! Well put.
1st solo: Soaring, heavenly, euphoric
2nd solo: Bitter, furious, hellish agony
Well, as a guitar player myself I wouldn't call the second solo like that. It's dramatic but nowhere near hellish or furious. Maybe angry but if you want furious go listen to Dimebag Darrell from Pantera and other guitar legends. Gilmour always has that sweet, bluesy tone.
@aimfuldrifter given what was going on during the recording of the record and given the phrasing, the tone, how he's attacking those licks - I think it's a defensible claim.
It's the Fourth of July! The birthday of the United States! Let's do a British band! 🤔😂🤣😅
Happy day, ungrateful colonials!
Esta song es mucho más grande y épica en el álbum "Pulse", tenéis uno de los mejores solos de la historia en directo.
Imagine hearing this in 1979. Epic
#1 favorite Floyd song. Gilmore can sing me to sleep any day
Gilmour
I think you find quite a few of their live performances are on a par(some better) w/their studio versions...plus there is the elaborate staging. Try the Pulse live version of this song.
I'd really love to see you guys listen to more Pink Floyd. They really are one of the most amazing band ever. Every song takes you somewhere. 🌈💗
The Albert hall show on pulse is the greatest solo by anyone ever. The pulse live version actually cut out 2 minutes of the second solo… WTF for?! You can find it on you tube. I cry every time I hear it.
