Shows how much you know. Potential Yakuza members must always have those tattoos before they become actual members. Once a Yakuza, your children will also be Yakuzas. Japan implemented a series of Yakuza exclusion ordinances back in 2000s. All Yakuza members will not be allowed to mingle or do business with regular Jap citizens. I've seen fans speculate that the HAC on the Nintendo Switch stands for something like "Handheld and Console". A more far-fetched theory is that it's short for "hachi" since this would be their entry into the 8th generation of console.
I'm pretty sure this was BEFORE Japan's birthrate truly became a problem, so kicking out single people when they turned 30 just seems needlessly cruel!
This was an excellent piece of research on Nintendo's Yoshio Hongo and his translated interview, regarding the topic of trump cards during the Russo-Japanese War, while it could be true, there is something that could start to doubt whether the trump cards were created in that war or not. A few years ago, it was discovered that in a museum in the US there is a Nintendo trump card that dates back to 1903, remember that the Russo-Japanese War began in 1904 and ended in 1905. This added to the fact that trump cards became popular among the aristocracy in Japan between 1880 and 1890, could indicate that Nintendo created the trump cards long before the war. Regarding the Yakuza issue at Nintendo, this is information that is not entirely confirmed and assuming that it was the only company that was associated with them is somewhat doubtful when in reality there were card/karuta shops that were associated with the Yakuza. Also, the photo shown at minute 1:04 is not of Fusajiro Yamauchi and there is no real photo of the founder of Nintendo, only the Yamauchi family owns the photo of Fusajiro. And finally, the issue of Nintendo jackets, it is mentioned that they do not give away uniforms but in 2015 there was an exception. In a special Gamecenter CX video about Super Mario Maker for Wii U on the official Nintendo Japanese channel (currently does not exist), Shinya Arino, the host of the program was given an official Nintendo jacket, more specifically the photo at minute 11:27 That's all, greetings from Captain Hanafuda🎴👺♠
Gameboy Pocket and Gameboy Light are two different products. American kids growing up in the 90s would have been pretty upset to know that their Japanese counterparts got a backlit Gameboy while we were desperately trying to use streetlights through the window (or some add-on monstrosity).
(3:52) It's pretty easy to make the mistake of assuming the car company itself was distributing the products, but it wasn't the car company itself, but rather, another part of the Hyundai Group, Hyundai Electronics (which itself would eventually be spun off as Hynix), that distributed Nintendo products prior to the GameCube. The car company is basically the only part of the Hyundai Group it was spun off from that the west largely knows, hence why it's easy to come to the conclusion that the car company was the distributor. Though, I think a separate video on Nintendo's history in South Korea (or other regions outside of EU, USA, and JP) would be very interesting regardless. (4:04) You mention that the Comboy 64 is more like the American console, but it's actually a Japanese console, with the games using the JP cartridge mold. The only 4 games (Mario 64, Mario Kart 64, Star Fox 64, and Diddy Kong Racing) that released for that specifically ended up using the American ROM, hence why I think you would come to that conclusion. Though the part where you have to tinker with the console a bit is true though. You can even replace the plastic cartridge tray in the console with a custom one that allows a NA or EU/JP cartridge to fit no problem. (4:19): The embargo was only partially lifted at this point. It wouldn't be until 2004 that South Korea would lift the embargo entirely. -Though burying the hatchet in this regard is an understatement, but that's something else entirely that I won't touch up here.- Fun fact: Just like how the Comboy 64 was a JP console, the official HK, TW, and Southeast Asian releases for the N64 were also just JP consoles. They also came with the correct power supply for those regions.
The playstation logo was and is very much 3d. Learned this years ago watching corruptions of the PS1 bios, sometimes the corruption simply moves the camera, other times stretches the vertexes into oblivion.

Yooooooo, the same guy did the industrial designs for the SuFami, the AV Famicom, SuFami Jr., _and_ the N64? And he was only in his 30s? God damn. No shit he's a legend... Nevermind how prolific he was, the sheer quality and timelessness of the designs he came up with are the sort of thing you expect from a world-renowned designer twice his age! Did he do the packaging for SFC too, or just the N64? Because as baller as the whole N64 neon look is, the SFC box with its lineart console, reminiscent of the original Apple Macintosh branding, has always felt super cozy. 😌 Also, woah woah woah! We finally have confirmation of the meaning of HVC and SHVC? Last I knew, it was pretty much universally assumed that it was (Super) Home Video Computer, but it'd never been confirmed! Haha, holy hell. Zapper-wielding Korean Mario is _amazing._ 🤣👌 40-50k yen, for a 128Mbit flash cart with 256Kbit of SRAM? That's insane. The idea that the PS1 splash screen isn't 3D is an interesting bit of Nintendo propaganda there, Hongo-san. 😏
3:00 Game Boy Pocket and Game Boy Light are two separate systems. The Game Boy Light only released in Japan and had a backlight, hence the name "Light". It's NOT another name for the Game Boy Pocket.
8:32 This isn't correct. That particular arrangement of intersecting prisms has 64 faces, but the resulting cube if intersections are removed has 24 faces and would require a minimum of 80 triangles (88 if topologically closed). To make it out of the intersecting prism shapes shown in this video, you would need at minimum 128 triangles. The N64 model isn't standard across games, ripping the Majora's Mask one shows 96 tris, Diddy Kong Racing's 90 tris. So neither are made out of that particular arrangement of intersecting prisms.
10:00 well, there's also the piracy factor. N64 had no chance of competing worldwide when (pirate) PSX games were 1/10 the price most N64 cartridges were. Even rich families bought pirate copies because many of the popular games weren't available legally (here in South America, the only way to play Dragon Ball Final Bout with Japanese voices or the Spanish dub of Soul Reaver, was via piracy). The markets from Latin America and Southern and Eastern Europe were flooding on socially accepted piracy.
Amusing irony that creating a more robust anti-piracy console would have resulted in lower sales... though I suppose that the counter-question would be "would they have sold well in the first place" or would people go for the Playstation anyway if it was easy to pirate?"
@@goranisacson2502 Hard to speculate how the overall tendency could have been, but I can talk for myself: I loved our PlayStation, but as soon as I had a computer capable of running Nemu64 (around 2007?) I emulated Diddy Kong Racing, Ocarina of Time and Conkers. I really REALLY wanted to play those games by my own instead of playing them for a few minutes at my friends' homes (and by "friends" I mean 2 friends, the rest didn't have an N64). What's crazy is that, in this country, Super Nintendo was king, by then "Nintendo" was almost a synonym of "video game console", so Sony taking over the market was no easy feat. The "Nintendo" brand was imprinted in the minds of parents. For sure the game prices were key in making them take the risk and buy that "unlocked" bizarro Sony console their primary-schooler was asking for Christmas.
I guarantee someone got up the hill they thought was unclimbable. As a kid I would have loved testing these games for free. As a teen I often beta tested WC3 custom games. Pretty sure Element TD was one of the ones I beta tested.
Nintendo: Yeah, we almost made DK a ninja. Not a good look. That's why we rejected it. Sega: Guys, guys, we made Sonic a storybook character! We made him a knight complete with a sword!
I remember websites mentioning the name Ultra Donkey Kong back in the day before it came out. Mostly in reference to Japanese gaming news because a lot of English speaking people nicknamed it Donkey Kong Country 64 before the name was revealed. People knew Rare was developing a DKC game for N64 so they called it DKC64, but i believe the name of the series was Super Donkey Kong in Japan (translated to English). So Ultra Donkey Kong made sense for Japan.
The biggest reason why the N64 and Gamecube flopped (and moreover why people are surprised about this looking back) is because the bulk of the most appealing games were focused on multiplayer. One person would buy one, and bring over a lot of friends to play. So one console purchase would appease upward of four consumers. The consoles were basically played just as much as their Sony-branded competitors, and remain a cherished memory by millions, but it just didn't translate into actual sales.
At least in the West, the "kiddie" stigma was just very hard to get rid of. Playstation entered the contest with just the right marketing, and the games to back it up. The N64 and Gamecube also handicapped themselves with their formats. CDs were in now, not carts. The Gamecube's minidiscs held only about 1GB compared to the 4GB PS2 discs.
I think it's because of the format mini discs /cartridges what made the ps2 the best selling console was the DVD format and global sales in most country's like Easter Latin America and the Middle East European gaming is an expensive hobby so the ps2 and Xbox eas of piracy and the DVD format cheapens was a facter that is the reason the ds and the gba was so successful if wana successful console you have to except piracy to most the game cube was expensive had little games and those games caused a lot then you have the ps2 that more expensive but you can get a bootleg games for cheap most people aren't American / japanese rich
8:31 It has 48 faces, not 64. (8 parallelepipeds = 48 faces.) Apparently the misinfo comes from a guy who recreated the shape in Blender with more faces than needed.
Funny enough, due to the Korean localization, the Sega Master system was localized as the Samsung Gameboy. Hence the Nintendo Gameboy was localized as Hyundai MINI COMBOY SEGA: "Who's the OG Gameboy now"
That opening was interesting, I'd like to hear more about obscure pre-order bonuses. We always hear about the US and Japan ones and the controversial ones like the Dead Island[?] zombie woman torso statue, but something simple like playing cards with cool art is real fuckin neato.
Rare & Nintendo should've made a Kong character who is a ninja/samurai named "Choppy Kong". Who parodies Jago from Killer Instinct and wields a banana katana.

17:25 “Checking titles for copyright…” And yet the name Donkey Kong led to a Universal lawsuit so significant that it may be the reason for Nintendo’s aggressive litigiousness to this day. But I mean Nintendo did win the lawsuit so I guess it worked out
IKR? A samurai is like the _opposite_ of a ninja, in a class struggle kinda way... if you define them as "dude with sword from Japan," then I guess they're similar?
Real life ninjas are just spies disguised as farmers, merchants and ordinary people. The glamorized versions came from the Japanese theater, i.e. assistants in black costume
A very nice series of insights this time around, even if Nintendo cornering the market on playing cards for Yakuza AND that photo being of the man you say he is is being disputed in the comments... then again the comments also has racist people equating Donkey Kong, a gorilla 'samurai', to Yasuke the African Samurai from history / Assassin's Creed so sometimes it pays off to comment-dive, sometimes it doesn't. What got me the most interested are the answers giving us a behind the scenes glimpse at Nintendo from before they started talking to the West, feels interesting to see things from another perspective like the Answerer saying he came up with the DK name. I have no real reason to believe him over Miyamoto, but I am amused that there ARE different stories out there. Also, the Wide Boy... man. I sometimes wonder what the word might've looked like if Nintendo did more stuff like the Super Game Boy- made adapters that let the people play NES on SNES, or SNES on N64, Game Boy on N64 etc... just generally done more to connect machines with previous generations. Mind you I don't know if that's ACTUALLY a smart thing! If it'd actually sell or be a desired product. I just think it'd be cool to have... but profits rule, especially when you had such a bad crop as Nintendo had with going from SNES to N64, and then the 64DD... REALLY curious if that one could have changed things if they managed to get it working earlier. Or if giving the Gamecube DVD-playback functionality would have helped, or if that too would have just brought up the price while the audience would just not be there.

As a kid I would have loved testing these games for free. As a teen I often beta tested WC3 custom games. Pretty sure Element TD was one of the ones I beta tested.
Whoa, this was epic! Keep it up!
8:18 the PlayStation logo after the orange one is made with polygons, so basically it was 3d
HAC on switch stands for Home/Handheld Advanced Console
8:31 It has 48 faces, not 64. (8 parallelepipeds = 48 faces.) Apparently the misinfo comes from a guy who recreated the shape in Blender with more faces than needed.
Funny enough, due to the Korean localization, the Sega Master system was localized as the Samsung Gameboy. Hence the Nintendo Gameboy was localized as Hyundai MINI COMBOY
SEGA: "Who's the OG Gameboy now"
That opening was interesting, I'd like to hear more about obscure pre-order bonuses. We always hear about the US and Japan ones and the controversial ones like the Dead Island[?] zombie woman torso statue, but something simple like playing cards with cool art is real fuckin neato.
If Donkey Kong was a samurai, he'd definitely have a Banana Blade.
Rare & Nintendo should've made a Kong character who is a ninja/samurai named "Choppy Kong".
Who parodies Jago from Killer Instinct and wields a banana katana.
Aw man, you guys talked about the Super Comboy, and showed a commercial for the brand, but not THAT legendary commercial??! (The one with Mario directing a choir of characters from like 10 different company's IPs...you know the one. IYKYK. ;) )
Was having such a bad work day and this cured me thank u 💕
17:25 “Checking titles for copyright…” And yet the name Donkey Kong led to a Universal lawsuit so significant that it may be the reason for Nintendo’s aggressive litigiousness to this day. But I mean Nintendo did win the lawsuit so I guess it worked out
Seriously... "Why didn't the N64 had a startup screen?"
Complaining that your console booted too quickly is dumb...
The secret frame at 6:34 got me LOL
Missed opportunity to have a clip of Ninja Kong from DK Jungle Beat in the video. Or a pic of a little Ninjape from the same game.
That picture at 1:00 is NOT Fusajiro Yamauchi! It is Shimizu Jirocho!
The HAC in my head is “Handheld And Console.”
What if Donkey Kong's whole name is Don K. Kong?
Wasted opportunity.
That's his uncle in the mafia.
Then why DK doesn't stick with Donkey Kong III, which DK Jr. named him?
In his heart he will always be a ninja.
13:06 how the heck did Superman 64 get past the Mario Club?
N64 needed all of the games it could get. Superman was popular.
I appreciate and am inspired by the amount of work that goes into these videos! I miss DK :(
6:30 so sonic is technicially on n64
12:12
the super mario club is club of fat italian men wearing red caps and blue overalls all conveniently named Mario
what did you think it was
My guess would be that the product code of the Switch, HAC, stands for "Handheld And Console"
My theory has always been that HAC is "Handheld And Console"
"Does this kid have any brains?" I feel that about some adults
The Game Boy Light is not the same as a Game Boy Pocket. It has a backlit screen.
When I was a child I thought it was called Don King Kong, no wonder universal sue them 😅
1:03 That's not Fusajiro Yamauchi. That's Shimizu Jirocho.
...maybe the HAC on the Switch is an open invitation for something. Or something like "Handheld and Console".
13:08 well that sure didn't stop Superman 64 from being released or that mission impossible Game.
In another timeline, we would have Donkey Kong Samurai and Ninja games. I want that.
12:50 this is just QA department with extra steps
So Nintendo has the same uniform policy as Hooters? “Shirt don’t fit? Gotta quit.”
🤔 😂
I remember being excited for the 64DD and always trying to find more info about it. I wonder how things would be different if it had worked out.
Being able to play Gameboy on N64 would have really helped a lot, especially with Pokemon emerging.
Great video !
3:22 I always thought HAC stood for "Handheld And Console" for the Switch being a Hybrid.
The video keeps saying "samurai," yet the title says "ninja."
They're different things!
IKR? A samurai is like the _opposite_ of a ninja, in a class struggle kinda way... if you define them as "dude with sword from Japan," then I guess they're similar?
The title has since been changed to say "samurai."
Real life ninjas are just spies disguised as farmers, merchants and ordinary people.
The glamorized versions came from the Japanese theater, i.e. assistants in black costume
2:28 Nyaaa!! Look at those adorable Lucas and Claus plushies!!! > w
Don't worry everyone, they said 'Ninja' in the title cause the Samurai-based Kong in _Jungle Beat_ was named Ninja Kong.
An interesting video and fun facts about Nintendo's history. So keep up the good work.
Do Princess Peach Showtime next!
I'd love a one-off game with Samurai Donkey Kong lmao
"Terrible dramatisation" 🤣🤣🤣
Another awesome dykg vídeo
3:23 HAC = Handheld and Console
Funny enough, we did eventually get a Samurai Kong in Jungle Beat...
...okay, Ninja Kong actually, but close enough, right?
Great video, though maybe the title could have mentioned the other content a bit more?
Honestly I see Diddy, Dixie, and Lanky Kong as better ninjas.
I could see DK being a Samurai.
HAC stands for Handheld and Console
13:07 so the Mario Club thought Superman 64 was it least a 70 and was good enough to launch?
3:34 HAC may be “Home and Car” idk
I was not expecting to hear the glorious sound of a PS1 booting up🙂
Thank you
Dmg is the easiest one turn the console to the front and read the top
The S stands for Sixty-Four. I like it.
