Hi everyone, I helped a little bit with this video. I have an archive of Shigeru Miyamoto interviews and things he has written with over 700 entries. There's a link in the description if you want to check it out.
There were better games than Mario and Zelda posted to user groups from the early 80's and written entirely by single anonymous programmers using BASIC. Mario and Zelda weren't legendary. They were commercially successful. There is a vast difference.
@ZennExile By your logic, those games aren't legendary either because there's better games. The big difference is how influential Mario and Zelda were/are
@@louiepikmin3184 influence is meaningless. You're just a brainscrubbed social media addict fully indoctrinated into the corporate model. You could run for a week away from the elephant and it would still be touching your nose when you turned around.
@@ZennExilewell let’s see. The secondary definition of legendary (after a quick google search) states that it describes something “remarkable enough to be famous; very well known.” Now I don’t know what your criteria for something “remarkable” is but I’d say giving an entire medium a kickstart after a crash is pretty damn remarkable, regardless of who many people wrote it or what language it was made in.
There's probably no greater indicator of how important you are to the video game industry and to the company you work for than rumors of your retirement causing your company's stock to briefly lose half their value in a speculator panic.
Really love historical documentaries about video game development through time. This reminds me of some of the Gaming Historian’s work, which I really love. More like this please!
Insane to think how old Miyamoto is! He's an old man! But man, he shaped so many childhoods for the better! To this day, when I think of a hero, I always imagine them with a sword thanks the Zelda series! It's gonna be sad when he eventually passes. Him, Reggie, and Iwata were the Nintendo trio.
I'd love to see videos on Takashi Tezuka, Yoshiaki Koizumi and Kenta Motokura. These 3 men, along with of course Shigeru Miyamoto, are what I'd consider the 4 pillars of the Mario franchise.
You guys did a great job summarizing how legendary this man is! I personally think if Tezuka and Aunuma are mentioned, who both are legendary in their own right, we have to acknowledge the one and only Yoshiaki Koizumi!

I have heard this information many, many times from other UA-camrs but some how I don’t get tired of listening it and your narration was really entertaining too. I’m 49 yrs old I’ve been a super Mario fan since the first game. It blew my mind when I saw it for the first time, specially compared to my then Atari 2600. I have not stop playing Mario, Zelda, Metroid and many others Nintendo games since then. Great vid!!
To be frank I think the failure of Pikmin, sunshine, and windwaker and the GameCube as a whole can largely jet be attributed to the fact it was just getting so outclasses by the PS2. The quality of the games has nothing to do with it, that's why all of these games are considered bangers today. It's just that Nintendo couldn't deal with the insane success of the PS2
Thank you for that amazing video. There is probably no person that influenced my childhood more and this video was a perfect trip down nostalgia lane. I still have goosebumps
It’s quite a shame how others like Keiji Inafune, the one behind all those Megaman games we got back then and Yuji Naka the guy behind Sonic, all couldn’t live long enough to keep their legacies and reputations as great as Miyamoto’s.
You're only as good as what you last release in the entertainment industry. Keiji Inafune didn't focus on just Mighty No 9 as a single skew, he tried to make it into a franchise at the same time so there wasn't the focus needed to make an actual good product.
Keiji Inafune is a complete fraud and he didn't have ANYTHING to do with Mega Man aside from drawing the art. Inafune is like Bob Kane taking the credit for creating Batman. He had virtually nothing to do with it, it was 98% Bill Finger. Inafune is a fraud on the level of Bob Kane.
@@callak_9974 And I believe this is Inafune's greatest flaw. More than anything, he was the "idea man" behind the franchise that made him famous - and he tried to force lightning to strike twice because he did it once with Mega Man. He focused more on the marketing and ideas behind it rather than the product itself... and woof, did it ever show lol.
yuji naka isnt half as good of the developer that miyamoto is, he's a total belligerent that pretty much ruined half of his own titles by forcing totally unrealistic expectations and deadlines on his teams and gets pissy when they aren't able to deliver a good product by those deadlines. dude is probably half the reason that sega went so far down under given how antagonistic he treated sega of america
Shigeru Myamoto is the heart and soul of Nintendo. It's amazing that how this man has been in every console generations for the past 40 years of his career. He went from making toys to making iconic video games in history. A creative and dedicated hard working man.
14:31 This is a great line, this man understood the people playing their games. I wish recent game companies apply this type of quote into the creating a game
Awesome video ! I learned quite a few stuff about him. Gotta say, Kyoto is not only one of the most beautiful towns in the world, it's also home to 3 of my favorite companies in the world, Fujifilm for photography, Kyoani for anime, and Nintendo for videogames.
Even if he didn’t have a direct hand in them, so many other characters and franchises wouldn’t even exist if it weren’t for Miyamoto. Also, it’s wild that Miyamoto has been through three presidents in Yamauchi, Iwata, and now Furukawa.

When I was 7 years old, I wrote an “article” for the elementary school magazine about Shigeru, I didn’t really know a lot about him and wrote a bunch of lies (saying he owned Nintendo lol) but praising him and his games, I was a gamer kid and loved my N64. I can truly say his video games shaped my childhood and part of my personality. I cried just thinking about the moment we will miss him. Thanks for all the fun Mr Miyamoto
Nintendo’s creative attitudes and philosophy is why they have survived all these decades and still continue to be successful. It’s not about hardware capabilities. it’s about having fun games that anyone can pick up and enjoy.
He had a hand in almost every paradigm shift during the cradles of the gaming industry, seeing how games evolve along with his works is amazing. Excellent video.
This man was one of the biggest influences in my childhood, and his works have shaped me into the woman I am today, and I'll forever be grateful for it
@PrussianKami , oh my! A newer fan! That surprises me. Most die-hard fans are from the 80's, when he created Donkey Kong Arcade, Mario Bros., and Super Mario Bros. 1, and they're mostly boys, well, men now lol. I'm surprised Shigeru Miyamoto gained fans even in the 2000's!!
If I ever had a chance to meet this man, I would love to tell him thank you for making my childhood so much better and more fun. Jim Henson and Miyamoto-San are both my idols.
Fascinating- I’m preparing to write a paper on Miyamoto and learning all of this about a childhood hero of mine is the cherry on top of my preparation. Thank you so much!!
Incredible that one man can have such a defining influence on an entire type of media. He came into this world at just the right time and took his chance to change it for the better. Legend!
Maybe halfway through the video I started just drowning in thoughts, first about how this man gave us these experiences in our childhood, the joy of playing these retro consoles and handhelds and sharing good times with friends and family... To the grim reminder that Mr. Miyamoto is reaching an age and a fate that no one can escape sadly. Getting to the end, I felt so sad but as the well-known saying goes: All good things must come to an end... In the end I am glad he insisted on working for them. He was practically their savior. Anyways, I hope he enjoys the rest of his life and lives as long as he hopes!
I wanted to cry out of nostalgia and excitement watching this summary of his career, I am not exaggerating in saying that Miyamoto san molded my entire childhood, he and his games are the reason why I wanted to dedicate my life not just as a gamer but also as a game designer. I always dreamt of meeting him in person, and probably that will never happen, but I swear I will always honor him in spirit with the games I have the chance to be a part of. Thank you deeply for all the precious memories you built in our hearts and minds with your games and that you continue building with your unmatched legacy. 🥺🥺
Limitations breed creativity. A lot of people I know would fold under the pressure AND having to work with self-imposed limitations of the hardware they needed to repurpose... but they buckled down and made it work. Snatching victory from the jaws of defeat will make anyone a legend in their field. He truly did the impossible.
I cannot express the admiration I have for this man, thank you for so much, thank you for Mario, Zelda and all the hours of joy you have given to me since I knew what Nintendo was, thank you for the driving inspiration you have given to me. I hope this life can provide me with that dream fulfilled.
Shigeru Miyamoto is the king of gaming. His games will forever be beloved no matter how many years pass they are true wonderful classics. Also he is a knight that's amazing he truly is a legend just like his game The Legend of Zelda. Cool video. ^_^
Arguably, you really can't match it. Without his creative genius, video games might never have recovered in the west from the crash of 83. In some ways, he's the father of video games. No, he wasn't the first to make a video game, but without his initial massive successes, gaming wouldn't be where it is today. AND now that it is as big as it is, no one can take Miyamoto's place. Sure, some will come along, and start up a new megahit franchise or genre (re)defining game, but it isn't likely that they'll be responsible for basically saving gaming as a whole, or setting the foundations for gaming as we know it. Hell, Miyamoto spawned 2 mega franchises in the 80's in two different genres: Mario and platforming, and Zelda for RPGs/adventure games (and in some ways open-world games in general?). And then created pikman nearly 20 years later, before deciding casuals and the elderly should join in with fitness games. It's somewhat difficult to be a gamer and not have played a game he touched before the mid 2010's. With the advent of smartphones and shovelware, it's no longer as surprising, given how much crap is pushed on the app stores. And now he's just "Fellow at Nintendo." He gets to work on theme parks and movies, ensuring they feel genuine. He's the GOAT creative genius of gaming.
Not like anyone but me would really care, but it's cool to me to see Hyokkori Hyoutanjima get mentioned in some form. Hyokkori Hyoutanjima is a really old Japanese puppet tv show from the 60s which was a musical comedy. It is mainly about a school of kids who take a trip to an island called Hyoutanjima, however when they get there, a volcanic eruption occurs, causing the island to float on it's own endlessly, as the class are stuck there. To make matters worse, the class is totally oblivious to the fact that a bandit, named Machine Gun Dandy was there. all sorts of other characters like a pirate named Torahige, and the character mentioned in the video, Gabacho (yes that's his name), who is the mayor of the town. The show was originally created in the 60s, but the original series is lost now due to the film being damaged. Since the materials from the original still existed and were in good condition, in addition to the series being popular long ago, a remake was made in 1993. Some of the first episode of the remake is available on UA-cam if you search hard enough.
What I love about Miyamoto when I was watching the video is how he loves to take old ideas that he previously worked on, but didn’t see the light of day, and create something brand new and innovative out of it. Game Developers should do this more. Take old, abandoned ideas, and make something new and interesting out of it.
I never knew he got his foot in the door with Nintendo through his father's relationship with the president of the company but at least he didn't squander the opportunity and proved his worth by being consistent and true to himself. I also didn't know Gupei Yokoi had mentored him into the game making factory that he became. The funny thing as a kid was my mom would tell me I play video games too much and should go outside. Meanwhile, across the world, Miyamoto who's the same age as her was building wealth and prestige to a company that was revolutionizing the world and not just video games in real time. May he continue to thrive and poke his head back and forth into video games into ripe old age. 😇

I experienced the original DK arcade machine as a 6 year old in a Brooklyn NY supermarket in 1981 and was immediately hooked. DK Jr the next year in 1982 was a hit in the arcade as well. Mario bros arcade in 1983 was another hit. While I appreciated Nintendo as a brand by then, it wasn't until I experienced Super Mario Bros in the arcade in 1985 that I felt something special beyond Nintendo's previous efforts. Whatever I feel about Nintendo these days, they will always have a huge influence for me as an older OG gamer. I owned a NES, SNES, Gameboy, Gameboy color, Gameboy advance, Gameboy DS, Gameboy 3ds, N6, and Gamecube. Shigeru Miyamoto is an icon that should be cherished.
SO cruel that Gamecube era sold so low... It was easily in the top 3 best era of games. People just not wanted to be seen owning a "lunchbox"... Shame given how many amazing games this console had...
I know. The damage that Sega did in the 90's with their spectacular marketing, about Nintendo being "kiddy" and only for little kids, took a toll that it is still felt to this day. I would know, since I was, and still am, an avid fan of Nintendo, and have dealt with the reputation of being a Nintendo fan, and a happy one, despite all the insults and shame that non-gamers, Sega gamers, and Playstation gamers, have given me. 😂
The last console my mom ever bought me was a GameCube and she asked me directly one day before the birthday she bought it for me for if I would rather have an Xbox or a GameCube. I said I wanted a GameCube and have since then bought for myself every Nintendo machine since and reobtained a Super Nintendo and a Nintendo 64 which I have managed to keep, alongside my Switch and 3DS, all three of which I still play. Now, I confess to being one of them who switched from NES to Sega Genesis, but I kept my NES and still played it and my dad bought a Super Nintendo, so I was able to play Super Mario World, Super Mario All-Stars, and a small handful of others when I went over to his house, but by the time Nintendo 64 was about to launch, I wanted in on that and even got Mario 64 as a pack-in title, Ocarina of Time, and Pokemon Snap for the Christmas I got it and a fair few Nintendo 64 games I no longer have physical copies of for birthdays and Christmases for a few years until the end of that console's life cycle. GameCube was the transition console for me, most of the games I had for it were gifts for my birthday or Christmas, and also the GameCube Zelda Four Swords game which I never finished as part of a graduation present, but I took over buying games for myself after getting my first job rather than saving up what little money I got from allowance, my birthday, and Christmas and blowing it on a single game like I did as a child.
If you ask me, I think the only reason the PlayStation 2 sold so many units was not because of the games but because it was like a cheap DVD player so even those who don't play video games would get one

Hi everyone, I helped a little bit with this video. I have an archive of Shigeru Miyamoto interviews and things he has written with over 700 entries. There's a link in the description if you want to check it out.

1:44-1:46 If you ever wanted to know why a lot of the music to the Mario games features the banjo or bluegrass, there's the answer.
Mario and Zelda alone is legendary but he kept creating more master works. A true creative genius.
They’re masterworks all. You can’t go wrong

The day Miyamoto-San passes away is the day the entire gaming world cries. 😭
Good thing Japan has one of the longest average lifespans in the world.
At his funeral which I hope isn't until many years from now, they should play the mario 64 Staff roll music.
What a legend! Very grateful to him for all the joy his games delivered to us!
Thank you for that amazing video. There is probably no person that influenced my childhood more and this video was a perfect trip down nostalgia lane. I still have goosebumps
Got to love a good ole Shigeru Miyamoto documentary.
I find the fact that Shigeru Miyamoto, famed game designer from Japan, loves bluegrass, to be hysterical.
Same here. I did a double take while listening.
And was made a FRENCH knight
all his games show love and are clearly influenced by american culture. Probably had to do with the Disney and Western movies he watched
I guess that explains a couple of the songs in Zelda
Right, a Namekian "blue grass". lol
Keiji Inafune and Yuji Naka are still alive
yuji naka isnt half as good of the developer that miyamoto is, he's a total belligerent that pretty much ruined half of his own titles by forcing totally unrealistic expectations and deadlines on his teams and gets pissy when they aren't able to deliver a good product by those deadlines. dude is probably half the reason that sega went so far down under given how antagonistic he treated sega of america
Shigeru Myamoto is the heart and soul of Nintendo. It's amazing that how this man has been in every console generations for the past 40 years of his career. He went from making toys to making iconic video games in history. A creative and dedicated hard working man.

This man single-handedly made so many people into gamers. His impact on the world will never be forgotten. Great video as always.
The story about donkeykong always baffles me. From a panic to an international flex crazy fast.
Yo nitro rad is great at these he kept me focused on the video for the whole length
Shigeru Miyamoto is the king of gaming. His games will forever be beloved no matter how many years pass they are true wonderful classics. Also he is a knight that's amazing he truly is a legend just like his game The Legend of Zelda. Cool video. ^_^
A legacy that will probably never be matched.
The end of the video, "So long Miyamoto san, and thank you for all the games" made my heart skip a beat. (He's still with us.)
Nintendo worrying about you like a loving mother or a caring big brother 😢 priceless!
You did a Really good job ask the Narrator of this video

A titan of the industry, he changed the way we interact, both with each other, but also with media. A legacy that will be remembered for a long time.
Miyamoto truly is the Disney of Video Games. Very lucky to be here as it's all still happening.

While I appreciated Nintendo as a brand by then, it wasn't until I experienced Super Mario Bros in the arcade in 1985 that I felt something special beyond Nintendo's previous efforts.
I loved my GameCube. Though I played mostly melee on it i was able to play a ton of awesome games like windwaker which still holds up
The last console my mom ever bought me was a GameCube and she asked me directly one day before the birthday she bought it for me for if I would rather have an Xbox or a GameCube.
Dvd drive would have saved it
If you ask me, I think the only reason the PlayStation 2 sold so many units was not because of the games but because it was like a cheap DVD player so even those who don't play video games would get one
The ending was so emotional, we'll never forget this Nintendo era. Peak gaming

DYKG forgot to tell the video editor and script writers that this is not a eulogy.
great man, thank you for all the good times.
Myamoto will forever be a legend, without him, we wouldn’t have the gaming industry we know today, thank you Mr Myamoto…for everything
Why end with "so long"? He's not leaving lol
Made it sound like he passed away, hate hearing that haha
DYKG doesnt know how to finish a video docu on a person without making it sound like a eulogy.
Kojima and Myamoto both deserve biopic movies
Kojima? No way.
Konami will make a fuss about the isolation and other unethical work practices they put Kojima through to force him out. Also theres those NDAs they gave out.
this is super well researched and produced. But I feel like it could have been at least 3x longer. Please give yourselves more space and more time to tell stories like this!
this video is awesome and informative but man the ending is a little weird. definitely feels like the kind of thing that would be released after he died 😬
