I bumped into him randomly on a trip to Brighton, (England). I couldn’t believe it, no one around recognised him, he was just wondering the shopping lanes, albeit with a few young female entourage. I just had to go over, shake his hand and bowed courteously and thanked him. It was a very magical moment for a life-long gamer.

It's no exaggeration to say we wouldn't HAVE the modern gaming industry without Shigeru Miyamoto. Not just all of Nintendo's beloved characters, but the idea of video games as a household medium flow directly from his work. The man is Walt Disney/Stan Lee-level influential.

@@tlst94 That wouldn't be smart idea. I'm not saying they can't keep going without him. They can still make fun games, but there will be a noticeable something missing, just like after Iwata died....the soul and heart of Nintendo left...the NX became the switch was not what Iwata originally planned. It was lacking the Nintendo charm of a game console Nintendo Directs lost a lot of heart without Iwata being in them. Then Reggie retiring meant Nintendo of America lost it's charm. They can still make good games, but it's just going to be...not the same...new people will grow up and enjoy a new Nintendo. Just means my time with them has run it's course...all things must come to an end.

The quality of the games has nothing to do with it, that's why all of these games are considered bangers today. It's just that Nintendo couldn't deal with the insane success of the PS2

You're only as good as what you last release in the entertainment industry. Keiji Inafune didn't focus on just Mighty No 9 as a single skew, he tried to make it into a franchise at the same time so there wasn't the focus needed to make an actual good product.

Arguably, you really can't match it.
Without his creative genius, video games might never have recovered in the west from the crash of 83.
In some ways, he's the father of video games. No, he wasn't the first to make a video game, but without his initial massive successes, gaming wouldn't be where it is today.
AND now that it is as big as it is, no one can take Miyamoto's place. Sure, some will come along, and start up a new megahit franchise or genre (re)defining game, but it isn't likely that they'll be responsible for basically saving gaming as a whole, or setting the foundations for gaming as we know it. Hell, Miyamoto spawned 2 mega franchises in the 80's in two different genres: Mario and platforming, and Zelda for RPGs/adventure games (and in some ways open-world games in general?). And then created pikman nearly 20 years later, before deciding casuals and the elderly should join in with fitness games.
It's somewhat difficult to be a gamer and not have played a game he touched before the mid 2010's. With the advent of smartphones and shovelware, it's no longer as surprising, given how much crap is pushed on the app stores.
And now he's just "Fellow at Nintendo." He gets to work on theme parks and movies, ensuring they feel genuine.
He's the GOAT creative genius of gaming.

Not like anyone but me would really care, but it's cool to me to see Hyokkori Hyoutanjima get mentioned in some form.
Hyokkori Hyoutanjima is a really old Japanese puppet tv show from the 60s which was a musical comedy.
It is mainly about a school of kids who take a trip to an island called Hyoutanjima, however when they get there, a volcanic eruption occurs, causing the island to float on it's own endlessly, as the class are stuck there. To make matters worse, the class is totally oblivious to the fact that a bandit, named Machine Gun Dandy was there. all sorts of other characters like a pirate named Torahige, and the character mentioned in the video, Gabacho (yes that's his name), who is the mayor of the town.
The show was originally created in the 60s, but the original series is lost now due to the film being damaged.
Since the materials from the original still existed and were in good condition, in addition to the series being popular long ago, a remake was made in 1993.
Some of the first episode of the remake is available on UA-cam if you search hard enough.

I also didn't know Gupei Yokoi had mentored him into the game making factory that he became. The funny thing as a kid was my mom would tell me I play video games too much and should go outside. Mario bros arcade in 1983 was another hit. While I appreciated Nintendo as a brand by then, it wasn't until I experienced Super Mario Bros in the arcade in 1985 that I felt something special beyond Nintendo's previous efforts. Whatever I feel about Nintendo these days, they will always have a huge influence for me as an older OG gamer. I owned a NES, SNES, Gameboy, Gameboy color, Gameboy advance, Gameboy DS, Gameboy 3ds, N6, and Gamecube. Shigeru Miyamoto is an icon that should be cherished.

What a lovely video. I really like the more dramatized narration. It really pulls me in more than the (also wonderful) straight fact videos.

SO cruel that Gamecube era sold so low... It was easily in the top 3 best era of games. People just not wanted to be seen owning a "lunchbox"... Shame given how many amazing games this console had...

I know. The damage that Sega did in the 90's with their spectacular marketing, about Nintendo being "kiddy" and only for little kids, took a toll that it is still felt to this day.
I would know, since I was, and still am, an avid fan of Nintendo, and have dealt with the reputation of being a Nintendo fan, and a happy one, despite all the insults and shame that non-gamers, Sega gamers, and Playstation gamers, have given me. 😂

The last console my mom ever bought me was a GameCube and she asked me directly one day before the birthday she bought it for me for if I would rather have an Xbox or a GameCube. I said I wanted a GameCube and have since then bought for myself every Nintendo machine since and reobtained a Super Nintendo and a Nintendo 64 which I have managed to keep, alongside my Switch and 3DS, all three of which I still play. Now, I confess to being one of them who switched from NES to Sega Genesis, but I kept my NES and still played it and my dad bought a Super Nintendo, so I was able to play Super Mario World, Super Mario All-Stars, and a small handful of others when I went over to his house, but by the time Nintendo 64 was about to launch, I wanted in on that and even got Mario 64 as a pack-in title, Ocarina of Time, and Pokemon Snap for the Christmas I got it and a fair few Nintendo 64 games I no longer have physical copies of for birthdays and Christmases for a few years until the end of that console's life cycle. GameCube was the transition console for me, most of the games I had for it were gifts for my birthday or Christmas, and also the GameCube Zelda Four Swords game which I never finished as part of a graduation present, but I took over buying games for myself after getting my first job rather than saving up what little money I got from allowance, my birthday, and Christmas and blowing it on a single game like I did as a child.

If you ask me, I think the only reason the PlayStation 2 sold so many units was not because of the games but because it was like a cheap DVD player so even those who don't play video games would get one

6:27 OMG! All because a Popeye license didn't work out we got DONKEY KONG!
Such a small thing created such an amazing chain of events because of the two character designs we ended up getting in this game!
    I love this!
