Remakes can make or break, both RE4 and DS remakes are splendid because they didn’t cut or remove the old areas of what was once there. But they implemented some neat modern gameplay and graphics. The Resident Evil franchise with remakes have been phenomenal, even if RE3 is a disappointment. Remasters are a bit… tricky. My only gripe with remasters is that they fuck up the graphics. Case A: Assassin’s Creed III Remastered. My to god that game looks awful and sometimes weird. Same with Sniper Elite V2 Remastered. Yes the original game is still there but that doesn’t save the excuse that the developers fucked something up. Now onto demands for remakes/remasters like most noticeably the Elder Scrolls/Fallout community, people want F1/F2, Morrowind and Oblivion to be remastered/remade but Bethesda, specifically Todd Howard said that he’d much rather leave those games alone as he wants people to play them in their original state. Your opinion on some remasters being the definitive way is controversial but I totally agree. I love Tony Hawk and Goldeneye 007 but they could’ve gone farther with the latter. But it does seem to go against some of your earlier points about changing the original artists and creators design. So really we should be saying “if I subjectively enjoy it then it’s ok” instead of trying to define objective characteristics that make a remaster/remake bad.
The remake trend only came 4 years ago with re2 and now many of us are already sick of it… if only it was not that heavily abused by triple a studios because i still think remake/remaster is a cool concept
A couple things - George Lucas is the creative force of Star Wars and he decided to return once technology and budget allowed him to put on screen what he really intended to. Also Halo CE Anniversary can be played in the original graphics. I think in for specific cases we should remember that the original remains intact and playable/watchable and perhaps not use them as examples of people other than the original artist ruining it. A note on backwards compatibility- companies could likely do this but it takes away development and support resources that could be utilized to advance the products we enjoy. Games and consoles are challenging to produce and decisions must be made to provide a unified vision of the product otherwise it is lost in an overwhelming and half-baked buggy features. Look to Steve Jobs perspective on producing the iPhone. Just some thoughts. Love the videos and the dialogue it creates.
George Lucas is a fucking idiot and I would quite frankly argue that a Lucas foaming at the mouth about new tech and having been drowned in praise that clearly went to his head was a very different person to the Lucas who actually made OG SW. So no, I don't care that he was the original creator in that case because if anything it shows that even original creators can go back and fuck up the artistic intent and effect of a creation. Halo CE remaining playable in the original graphics doesn't change any of the issues the remaster created. Just because the option exists doesn't mean that the remake being a terrible product is OK. Also, I could not care less about that last argument. That sounds like capitalist speaking points to me. I call bullshit on that entire point. The resources are nowhere near limited enough that backward compatibility is such an impossibility that would truly affect the newer products we get. Just bad excuses for multi billion dollar corporations. Steve Jobs is also not someone I respect or whose opinions I would give a rats ass about. If this comes across as combative, that's fine. I'm not attacking you, just opinions I think are silly.
I generally think very critical of re-anythings and that originality is incredibly important. Unfortunately, familiarity is somehow op in todays meta, consumers have become undemanding drones when it comes to games, films, music and design. I think creative work is great when ambitious and dareing, fandom is a curse; its basicly conservatism when there needs to be progress.
I think it's unreasonable to expect everything to be original and creative personally. However, I do agree that playing on nostalgia has reached a critical mass.
This happens because it sells. Corporations want reliable profits not ebbs and flows. Slapping a well known title on a butchered adaptation for example gets the true fans to see it just to complain it’s bad granting free publicity. The wider appealing story adaptation then hopefully reaches a mass audience. It’s a crappy playbook but folks keep buying into it.
The gameplay in the DS Remake is actually improved too. Most weapons in the OG frankly sucked compared to the plasma cutter. The remake managed to rebalance all weapons and make them useful. Even upgrading them is better now that no more energy nodes have to be used to fill empty nodes in upgrade trees of your weapons and suit. Same with doors that used to require energy nodes now need security clearance levels which get upgraded during story progression etc. etc. Dead Space Remake is the definitive version of Dead Space 1.
The changes with upgrading and nodes are absolutely one of the best improvements. It's so nice not having to hang onto random upgrade material IN CASE a door requires it as a key.

Honestly my only point of contention is on Immersive Sims being a "genre". Don't get me wrong, many games considered to be Imm Sims have plenty of defining attributes such as role-playing aspects and a high amount of player choice through emergent gameplay. That does not mean they'll always play the same tho, sure plenty of them are in the first-person view but Weird West also exists where its more of a top-down shooter instead. Its kinda why its more of a developer philosophy since not very many games give the player as much freedom to choose how they want to play than Imm Sims in the vein of Dishonored, Prey (2017) aka Typhon, Deus Ex etc. To be fair and clear tho, its kind've a game by game basis and up to the personal definition of the player of what Imm Sims truly are. For example i don't really consider Bioshock or Bioshock 2 to be Immersive Sims even if they share plenty of elements with their System Shock Predecessors. I am by no means trying to get angry at you cause god can people get *really* upset when they talk about what makes or doesn't make an Imm Sims. My rambling aside...I feel i agree with you in terms of remasters and remakes, i try to gauge on a case by case basis but we should always look to preserve the old versions if not just for a historical reason, the last thing we need is art being forgotten to the sands of time.
I can see your point there, but I think it literally as you say depends on what criteria someone uses to define imm sims, as to how easily it can be categorised as a genre or not. Glad you agree with most the points in the video however and yes I do still think the original versions should in some way be accessible. It's why I found it so infuriating that rockstar removed all the original games from online stores when that abomination remaster came out.
I'm torn apart on this one, I do feel that some games do deserve a remaster because they are gems and by today standards are outdated , it make sense from a marketing view point too, newer audiance and less creative work, for example, imagine your older brother who grew on playing prince of persia (or any other game at that matter) and he just told you how good it was, you still wanna try it, but at the same time you don't, the gameplay mechanics are outdated, the graphics are outdated, even the story might be cheesy and redundant by now, so yes, these older games do deserve a remaster/remake. Or maybe the game graphica and stabilization is bad much like fallout new vegas or fallout 3, these do deserve a remaster since the story is good. However, some don't, I didn't play the original crysis, but got the remaster on sale, and I have no clue what they remastered, watched the gameplay of the old one on youtube and it feels the same. Lets just hope this remaster trend ends already, I long for a fresh creative new game.
The terms are pretty much purely semantics at this point. I went with two definitions that some sources agree on and worked from there. To me there's honestly no difference. Just, are they good or are they bad.
I dont like re4make as a better version, I like the campiness better on the original, but it IS a very good and carefully made(ada notwithstanding) homage, that's certainly better for new players... Also, played demons souls remake, and liked it better than the original(which I played to completion at launch)... To each his own
I like it better gameplay wise. Which is the single most important element to me. It feels better to play. But I do appreciate the campiness of the original.
I think that at the time there wasn't as established control scheme for PC FPS games is more where I'm coming from with System Shock. So it's aged even worse because of the horrid control scheme they tried for it.
@@literallylaw the thing is system used an established rpg control scheme found in games like ultima and early elder scrolls. I wouldn't say these games have aged more so that they were always impenetrable to all but those who cared the most.

That crysis remaster was so incredibly pointless. Agreed.
Both bluepoint games ARE remakes. Them being nearly 1-1 doesn't matter, it's the technical aspect that qualifies it as a remake.
Agree to disagree.
@@literallylaw Someone respectfully disagreeing on the internet ??? That's impossible 😨
🤣I know, what a time to be alive.
u really like the pong analogy
It's a good analogy. 👀
The Demon Souls remake is an insult to the original artistic vision. The re-designs are horrible.
LITERALLY fLAWless
💜
Most of the remasters you mentioned are remakes, very faithful ones at that, remasters don’t alter really anything significant.
The terms are pretty much purely semantics at this point. I went with two definitions that some sources agree on and worked from there. To me there's honestly no difference. Just, are they good or are they bad.
Re4make fumbles the bag ngl
I enjoyed it 🤷🏻♂️
I dont like re4make as a better version, I like the campiness better on the original, but it IS a very good and carefully made(ada notwithstanding) homage, that's certainly better for new players... Also, played demons souls remake, and liked it better than the original(which I played to completion at launch)... To each his own
I like it better gameplay wise. Which is the single most important element to me. It feels better to play.
But I do appreciate the campiness of the original.
Seems silly to say system shock has aged cuz for one games don't age but the first game was impenetrable even when it came out
I think that at the time there wasn't as established control scheme for PC FPS games is more where I'm coming from with System Shock.
So it's aged even worse because of the horrid control scheme they tried for it.
@@literallylaw the thing is system used an established rpg control scheme found in games like ultima and early elder scrolls. I wouldn't say these games have aged more so that they were always impenetrable to all but those who cared the most.
By the time system shock came out id say there was two established control schemes the id control scheme and the looking glass control scheme
You'd still agree that it being completely impenetrable makes it a good potential choice for a remake however, yes?
@@literallylaw yes I dont think anythings wrongs with the remake j think remake something like system shock is sensible
How could you not mention Warcraft III? Shame on you!
Jokes aside, interesting takes, I feel like having always been inclined towards the recent indie rather than AAA there is little space for having games re-done. Which is why I am very surprised at the news of a remake of RoR, but we'll see how it goes, hopefully it'll fall in the latter category, but I'm not trusting gearbox.
Mainly cause I'd have had to get footage of Warcraft reforged. And I'd rather die 😂
Yeah, I recently saw there was gonna be an RoR remake. Curious to see how it turns out.
@@literallylaw Understandable, lmao. Keep up the good work :D
Thank you :))
Bro just kneecapping everyone in RE
God gave them knees so I could cap em.
I am mad bioware changed Miranda butt shot .
I love to look at good female body , why remove those fantasy things .
Don't really mind changes like that since there's guaranteed to always be a mod that restores it.
Remake bad
Not necessarily 😜
