I dig this guy's reviews. He speaks his mind, he doesn't sugar-coat things and his subjective assessments seem well-founded and relatable. And... he's not afraid to tell you he as a long torso.
Love this review, minus the fact that people are always harping on the hard plastics of the interior. I own a 2019 veloster turbo and i'm happy that they chose to focus more on performance per dollar, over having things feel softer to touch. It's a sporty vehicle, not grannys living room. And i dont want to pay extra for squishy materials that also add more weight and slow the car down as a result. Just the opinion of an actual 2019 vt owner.
I liked the design and features of the new Elantra, test drove one and what killed the deal was just too many cheap plastics. It was well styled but felt cheaper than a Civic or Mazda 3 because of that.
I'm disappointed that North America won't be seeing the i30N (aka super version of the Elantra Hatch) that's available elsewhere. As another poster noted, that car is the true GTI competitor. The Veloster is stylish; no doubt about that. And the third door makes it at least possible to take along more than one passenger (though it strikes me as more appropriate for the family dog.) But it simply is not the "do everything" vehicle that the GTI has always been. Not to mention that rear visibility is a nightmare. The Korean manufacturers are definitely on a roll but I think they've missed the mark (for North Americans) with the Veloster.
I totally agree. It seems like they really didn't do their market research because 4 doors always does better than coupes by a significant margin in North America. While the Veloster has the quirky undersized third door it is really just a coupe and just too small both in rear seat room and cargo capacity for those of us with kids. I like the Elantra GT Sport Manual but unfortunately they really limit the options on the manual version in the US. Hoping they at least address that since they offer the new Velsoter with a fully loaded trim even in manual form.
Jesse James: To be fair to Hyundai I suspect there may be more to it than simply a marketing mistake. Hot hatches are much more popular in Europe and in Australia where they fill much of the niche occupied by compact crossovers in the US. Peugeot, Seat, Renault and even VW offer alternatives to the GTI. Hyundai may feel they are more likely to get a better return on their investment in the i30N in those markets than in North America. That's especially likely if one takes into account the price premium for hot hatches in Europe compared to the US (i.e. more profit) and production constraints that Hyundai may have for the i30N. Keep in mind that automakers cannot simply flip a switch to churn out more copies of a particular model. It appears that the i30N is very popular where it's available. Hyundai may already be facing challenges in filling the demand. The Veloster, on the other hand, really needs a shot in the arm in the US market. Given the greater price sensitivity in North America and the fact that the Veloster can be produced at a lower cost, Hyundai may believe it's better to hype the smaller, cheaper Veloster with the hot engine here. None of that eases the disappointment of those of us in North America who cannot get the i30N but it might explain Hyundai's decision..
You both have a point there but if they are to consider the performance of the Elantra GT and its sport models id the North American market they perhaps should consider bringing in the I30N. I have followed reviews in Europe, Australia and Middle east where many customers from both North and South America have requested that Hyundai brings the I30N and the new fast back to their market. In my home country Ghana, we are not having any of the those unless it is a specified order package. You can't get any of those N performance models at our dealerships and its a shame.
RIcky Morty: Important to distinguish between the i30 and the i30N. Hyundai says (according to C&D) that the Veloster is the only "N" model destined for the US at this time. Obviously, though, marketing plans change. I'm still inclined to think that Hyundai's plans may have more to do with production capacity than an unwillingness to give American consumers what they would like to see.
I just tried this car at the dealership yesterday, manual turbo. I agree this is a fun car to drive. However, I don't think we should compare it with the GTI, instead we should be comparing it with the Mini Cooper or Cooper S, as they are both funky looking small hatch backs with less focus on practicality. I am a long time Mini driver, and I like it. There are two complains, 1. Cheap plastic everywhere 2.It doesn't come with enough punch that I'd expect from a 1.6T (for most of the time, I didn't feel the T at all for some reason)
When you drove the Veloster Turbo, did you get the engine fully up to temp? The G4FJ (the 1.6t) cuts boost until it's totally up to temp to keep you from ruining the engine
I own the Elantra Sport, and it can take a bit to warm up, as it is a small displacement engine. I had the same first impressions when I first got in my car to test it. Thank god the dealership I got my car from just let my friend and I take it out by ourselves, did a good 10 mile test drive
Good review, but I think the Elantra GT is more of an alternative to the GTI than the veloster. The Veloster just doesn't have the practicality to make it a useful hatchback. The pillars in the back are gigantic holy crap. I really like that new front end, it looks really good.
Here in Canada we don't get the R Spec witch really sucks for Canada but haha because we did end up getting the N Brand name so ahh thanx so much Korea for not just giving it too the States because Korean's love Canada as well I guess
In the US, the type R is the best bet to get the turbo with the high-performance suspension and summer tires for well under $25K. Keep in mind there are no aftermarket wheels yet (according to Tire Rack), so you would need to use the stock rims and mount winter or all-weather tires for winter commuting here in the North East or in Canada.
Really well done review. Agree with all your points. I actually think the older Elantra Sport is a better value but do love the VT as well. The lower price is greatly appreciated as well
Great review. Hyundai/Kia needs to up thier interior materials and they will be up there trust me. Its one thing talk about a lot. With this level of quality fit and finish they need to introduce soft plastics on dash up doors and holders
Peter...In virtually all other Hyundai/Kia cars, the interior is a real strong point. But notably, this one and the new Hyundai Kona have too much cheap, scratchy plastic. It's a shame really, cause I'm a big fan of Korean cars.
I have a 2017, the dealership lied to me last year when I bought mine and said they arent making them anymore, I wish I would have waited till the 2019s came out, Im thinking of trading it in on a 2019 turbo, I got a great price on it but I decided not to go through with it last min. I had my 2017 parked next to the 2019 when I was gonna buy it and I just like the look of mine better. I do have a lot of aftermarket things added to my car but Im so confused, i think Im gonna wait a few more months and see if they grow on me more before I trade mine in on it.
I don't think the dealer was lying when they said it was discontinued, there was a point when it was confirmed the 1st gen was going out of production after the 2017 run but the 2019 hadn't really been announced yet.
@@hellokittygirl1978 just trade it in? You'll get a butt load more car compared to your current one. Make sure its th ed 1.6l turbo and not the slouch 2.0.

I understand and believe Hyundai does as well about interior plastics needing updated. If you look at the refreshed Elentra, new SantaFe and Forte you'll see soft touchall over the cabin. It's the one area Hyundai/Kia still needed improvement. I believe both the new Veloster and Kona will get them addded like Elentra and Forte have once they're refreshed. Regardless the new Veloster is still a great value IMO.
I dont understand fascination with sunroofs. Have had them in cars and never use them especially opening them. they cost money add wieght mess with head room ( Should be a singular option). Not part of a tech package where very often all I want is the better stereo as I dont use a cell phone. Also if there is a screen nav should be in there. How much does nav cost? Ive owned Targas, T tops and verts. Obviously verts are way easier to operate but ive used all of those so like open air but sunroofs seem useless to me and useless cost. somebody explain what I dont get.
thats why I'd get the R-spec version of this car, all the performance without all the extra tech, R-spec even comes with a B&M short throw shifter and only cost 23k
I tested a Turbo Tech model last week. It drove pretty good, but I noticed it didn't have the sound enhancement that I've seen on the American Velosters even though it states on the Canadian website turbo tech models have it. What gives...?
This have cooled seats? I was squinting at the shots of the center console trying to see. Love that companies like kia/Hyundai are making these almost standard. Great review, I am so excited to see you in the N version.
No, the Elantra GT Sport has them, but the Veloster's are only heated. I did see some shots of a Korean model that looked to have both heated and cooled seats, but they are not available at all in North America.
I think that this car’s best attribute is that there is nothing out there that looks like it. With Volkswagen ... all models, including the Legendary R, all look like VW’s. I love VW’s (my wife drives one). But there simply is nothing that looks like this Hyundai and besides... doesn’t this come with ‘something’ like an 8 year warranty? Too small for me... but I love seeing them on the road. Thanks for the great review.
I really wish this and the N had the D shape steering wheel, also I'm very curious how much the Veloster N will be in Canada, i hope it's around 35k, not close to 40k
I don't think you have to wonder if it will be more reliable than the GTI. All new Hyundai/Kia cars are! They back it up with the best warranty in the world! You can have that peace of mind.
Cross shopped them both. I think it depends on whether you want to combine a manual transmission with a top-level trim, because you cannot do that in the Elantra. If you want say, the Infiniti sound system, you get that in the Veloster ultimate with a manual, but the Elantra GT Sport forces you into a DCT at that trim. I also think the top trim Elantra looks a little too plain and similar to the lower trims. If the Sport GT is to be the best we can get (no N model in North America) it needs a sportier looking front grill and to ditch all the cheap looking chrome trim all around the windows and front end (IMHO). That aside, they drive fairly similarly, both have the fully independent suspension, both have large sunroofs (if you like that sort of thing - the Elantra's is true panoramic). I did not like the Elantra's central door lock placement, and the top trim Veloster can be had with an amazing tire and rim combination for $500 that gets you Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tires that provide a significant improvement in grip that the Elantra cannot match with its stock Nexen tires. For me, I wanted all the toys and a manual transmission, and that ended up driving me to the Veloster over the Elantra (also, I don't care about the practicality of four doors vs three as I don't have kids and very rarely haul other people around).
Jacob I did Ford Family is trust fund babies No Passion !! & General motors is like Swamp in Washington dc & Chrysler Corporation is Owned by Italians! Toyota puts much $$$ in Lexus & Honda eco friendly! SUV or Crossovers bring $$$$$ I know I use to work for all of them 30 +++ years Experience
This vehicle looks terrible from the midpoint back exterior wise. Different tastes for different people but in this case it just is outright ugly. The interior is so cheap it actually makes a Ford Focus look good and the third side door is some convoluted designer's idea have cut on whiskey coming up with. This isn't even remotely close to competing with the Hot Hatch benchmark...the GTI Great review as always Zach
How do you think that Hyundai and Kia are able to provide fun for the masses... something most manufacturers have gone away from .... I would rather have cheap plastics on the inside than a boring car with "soft touch materials" any day. You can't have it all, everything costs more these days including labor and materials.... if you want a better interior get the GTI and don't forget to take an extra $7000 out of your bank account.....Thank you Hyundai for making cars that most of us can afford!
The i30N destroys the current GTI on performance and fun factor, that same engine will be in the Veloster N. The GTI wins on utility and being more family oriented than the Veloster.
If it is meant to seat up to four people; in the case of an accident, not having a door on one side will make it extremely difficult to rescue someone if the car is crumpled.
Sure but you cna say that about any 2-door coupe that seats 4... but it's easier to get them out of this than those right? This is basically a driver focused coupe that just happens to have the 3rd door for practicality.
@@HelloWorld-uw5wj Yes, however this car is larger in the rear and more oriented towards seating four people rather than a typical coupe (i.e. a car that has two doors not three doors). Therefore, it is more appealing to sit in the rear of a Veloster rather than a conventional coupe; but you still lack a rear door come an emergency situation. Therefore, I view this car's design as having a major flaw.
@@user-wv9mr2nh8h fwiw, if you will be carrying 4 people around then the Elantra is more suitable, but I’ve never had more than 3 people in my car and usually only have 2, so 99% of the time the only thing that goes in the back seat are bags of groceries...
Do know he has the ultimate fully loaded pool ackagr worh EVERYTHING. Do more research buddy. You can get an R-Spec for 24k. DO YOUR RESERCH. Some reviewers just don't explain anything.
That's true. But you don't get much for that base price. To equip the GTI with features like the Veloster will run just north of 35K. So it is significant.
@@konkise I hope you realise the cost of ownership after just 5 years of owning a GTI compared to a veloster TurboTech/Ultimate. Its around 6k more expensive after 5 years for a GTI base model with no big tech or sunroof
I saw one of these in person one day, driving my 18 civic hatch, the front looks nice, but from the rear it kind of disgusted me. Also I still don't trust hyandai quality,l. Looks cool but this is in a class of it own, cant be compared to a civic, focus, or even a gti.
I still think it's stupid for Hyundai to push this over the i30N / Elantra GT Sport "N". It's like (mean girls quote) they're desperate trying to make the Veloster a thing. Honestly, will America even miss the Veloster if it was axed? Clearly the base model is not worth it. Hyundai isn't even trying to market it. People who need cheap transportation have the Accent. People who want sporty with cheap won't bother with the base Veloster - they'll look elsewhere and/or used. The Turbo looks fun to drive and all, but I'm stuck with a Veloster interior for everyday of ownership. A Veloster Turbo already creeps up to Civic Si and almost base GTI price, but at least I get a Honda interior or VW interior. Hell, even the Elantra GT interior isn't bad and the Elantra Sport interior is fantastic. But with this? I'm stuck with hard plastic everywhere, AND this is smaller than the above mentioned. I don't get an LSD still. Why would I even get this over your Elantra Sport/GT Sport? People claiming the Veloster Turbo is worth it for the driving experience are just blind to having to LIVE with the car everyday. This tiny, hard plastic filled car will get old after the first year, yet I spent about the same as the competition. The same goes for the N. I don't care how much fun the N end up being - I'm still left with a Veloster interior...only now I spent 30k+...and hell I have to get the performance pack option on the N just to get an LSD? I'm sorry but LIVING with a Veloster everyday is not worth that much.
I couldn't agree with you more. This is kinda analogous to Tesla's shitty interiors. They look good from a far, but they're far from good. Tesla sculpts their interiors nicely with cheap-feeling materials.
See the thing is that in the State's primary give everyone else a complete run around when they want to buy a Veloster but here in Canada it's just completely different kind of story about it because they just always let you drive the car frist long before you even buy it k then they do whatever possible too get you into the car if you can't really afford it and they always listen to you and they always care about yourself as well people so I just plainly guess that here in Canada people it's definitely much better too buy a car here in Canada people then the State's because I have always hear nightmare stories after nightmare stories about people trying to buying a car in States
Jesus! For the Last Time. The, so called, "Cheap Plastic", is for Weight Savings. It's the same on the Veloster N. How about they give you you heavy, plush, thick, heavy, door and dash panels, adding 120 kilos, and you can remove them for race day. You car guys are never happy.

For me, I wanted all the toys and a manual transmission, and that ended up driving me to the Veloster over the Elantra (also, I don't care about the practicality of four doors vs three as I don't have kids and very rarely haul other people around).
Can’t wait for the N!
What trim is that? It has leather seat
Who would’ve thought we would ever see the day where the Koreans would catch up and we would be looking at Hyundai’s with more than just price in mind
Price difference aside if it were your money would have this Veloster or a Mini Cooper S?
mini cooper has pretty bad reliability, unless you want to lease it for only 3 years
The Mini Cooper S comparably equipped is more than 35K CA. But, you get a nicer interior. Also, a less reliable car. Tough choice.
is this comingto europe?
This vehicle looks terrible from the midpoint back exterior wise. Different tastes for different people but in this case it just is outright ugly. The interior is so cheap it actually makes a Ford Focus look good and the third side door is some convoluted designer's idea have cut on whiskey coming up with. This isn't even remotely close to competing with the Hot Hatch benchmark...the GTI Great review as always Zach
I like to have a emergency break button. Never liked the pull lever or the push pedal. Never used any of them,
That is so Canadian interrupted by a cat! 😂✌🏼😋
This or Civic Si?
very good review
Veloster N is coming in just six weeks? wooha 😨
Yes cant wait too check one out.
How do you think that Hyundai and Kia are able to provide fun for the masses... something most manufacturers have gone away from .... I would rather have cheap plastics on the inside than a boring car with "soft touch materials" any day. You can't have it all, everything costs more these days including labor and materials.... if you want a better interior get the GTI and don't forget to take an extra $7000 out of your bank account.....Thank you Hyundai for making cars that most of us can afford!
hmm i wonder if a rb26(engine) would fit in that.
Great looking car, and nice review! 👍👍
Awesome 😀 😀 Hyundai Veloster turbo review .
Looks a lot like the Focus, with that power it might well be a Focus ST competitor.
Good point. It does
Cat approves 🐈
Good reveiw
Cat likes the car. Bye kitty. Lol!
Kitty: this car rocks!
With that price, with that warranty, Issue with plastic interior. Zack, you don't know what you are talking about. Looks fine to me.
The kitty sold it for me
Why get that car when You can get an Elantra gt sport???
Hey Zack can you list me SUVs in Canada with lowest price to 50k
Getting the 2020 Veloster would get the turbo but I can't afford it
Correct that for GTI replacement
I hate hard plastics. If it is not leather padded. It should be soft injected plastic for top of the line trim models.
Everyone wants to see the N version. This isnt even close to a gti
I get it's supposed to be a joke, but the N in terms of performance is going to be somewhere between a GTI and the R.
The i30N destroys the current GTI on performance and fun factor, that same engine will be in the Veloster N. The GTI wins on utility and being more family oriented than the Veloster.
I'd be more interested if this actually only had 2 doors
U mean get the N model with 275hp
$29000 + tax for this?? That is too much imo.
Keep in mind that's Canadian dollars. Everything is more expensive in Canada.
@@johnholst I'm from Canada, for $30,595 MSRP you can get a branx new GTI!! Why would anyone consider this Veloster for $29,000??
HI KITTY!
I'm sorry but LIVING with a Veloster everyday is not worth that much.
arent you the guy that exports japanese cars
Turbo Kitty 1:19
Rare color G
The center stack and infotainment configuation in this car are enough to keep me from ever considering this car. What a mess!
I couldn't agree with you more. This is kinda analogous to Tesla's shitty interiors. They look good from a far, but they're far from good. Tesla sculpts their interiors nicely with cheap-feeling materials.
interior just doesn't cut it as a sporty car
See the thing is that in the State's primary give everyone else a complete run around when they want to buy a Veloster but here in Canada it's just completely different kind of story about it because they just always let you drive the car frist long before you even buy it k then they do whatever possible too get you into the car if you can't really afford it and they always listen to you and they always care about yourself as well people so I just plainly guess that here in Canada people it's definitely much better too buy a car here in Canada people then the State's because I have always hear nightmare stories after nightmare stories about people trying to buying a car in States
Hello kitty
Jesus! For the Last Time. The, so called, "Cheap Plastic", is for Weight Savings. It's the same on the Veloster N. How about they give you you heavy, plush, thick, heavy, door and dash panels, adding 120 kilos, and you can remove them for race day. You car guys are never happy.
Hello kitty, can I help you?
Sales reps will have a hard time explaining by it uses cheap hard plastic to the would-be buyers....
She cares if it's 7 or 8 inches!
Cat optional
Bye kitty lol
U need a better mic
Just buy a 1 or 2 year old performance pkg Gti and you would be happier
With an expiring warranty? No way. You need the full warranty on those German cars.
other than being ugly af, seems like a cool little car
You like 'now' a lot.
