Pantera was arguably the heaviest, most popular band during the 1990’s. Ruling the metal scene for a decade, infighting gradually fractured the band. When the September 11 terrorist attacks happened they cancelled their tour, and Pantera would never play another show again.
Bobby Tongs was an insider in their camp. With them from the beginning, he’s best known as the videographer for their genre breaking home videos which continue to introduce new fans to the band.
I speak with Bobby about everything from the early glam days, the arrival of Phil Anselmo, the changing of their sound, their tours, Phil’s drug addiction, how the Down side project began to splinter the band, their break up, Dime’s gradual frustration with Damageplan, and Bobby’s relationship with the remaining band members.
This is the story of the world’s most important heavy metal band between 1990 to 2001.

Trendkill is criminally underrated. One of the best albums ever in my opinion.
As a Texan Pantera is my Metallica if that makes any sense. Vulgar is my fav for being heavy. Trendkill is lyrically and vocally my favorite album. Far beyond is my fav because of the drums. Cowboys is my fav because it’s classic. Reinventing had a couple great songs and some stellar guitar work but not being a huge fan of this album isn’t surprising knowing now of their strained relationships at the time. Of course the work may suffer. When Reinventing is sizzling it’s masterclass groove metal and the other songs aren’t bad they just aren’t great great. Trendkill is such a boss ass record though. Not a bad song all the way through.

It's not that it was a bad album, it was an awesome album by metal standards, it's that it had to follow Vulgar and FBD which was impossible and also I do know that the relationships within the band were not once they once were on the earlier albums which contributed to them not even wanting to be around eachother.
@@joshhuatheg3m3ni5 Makes perfectly sense once when Metallica start going downhill Pantera all sudden got better and a lot heavier obviously. Although I felt that Metallica should of done something different especially after Justice but the black album wasn't what I had in mind. So with that being said Pantera not only filled the void with the Metallica letdown but maybe Metallica in my opinion should of changed their sound by being more heavier instead of going commercial.

Still to this day the best shows I have ever been to was Pantera shows in the mid 90s.. The unity and connection between the crowd and band was unbelievable....

I grew up in Arlington close to Dimes house. I would walk to a club on Division St called Metalworks to see PANTERA play.
The walk home took half the time because I was inspired and had to get home to practice after watching Dime play.
He had that effect on us younger guitar hungry dudes.
he still has that affect today i found out about dimebag/pantera in 2018 and ive been playing guitar ever since hes my idol i hope to one day be close to his skill level and be in a band if my own

It's heartbreaking to me that Dime wanted to start Pantera back up after Damageplan. Not saying it was a sure thing but a possibility nevertheless.

The guy was a schizophrenic, they found journals of writings saying "Pantera" as a singular entity were in his head stealing his thoughts. He told people he had written the lyrics and they had stolen them from him. He wasn't egged on by any articles, he wanted to kill "Pantera." He had been caught at a show months earlier acting shady and kicked out in another city.

I moved to Dallas early 90's and my first Pantera show was with Skidrow. They killed it, both bands. Pantera came out at the end of Skids set and they played KISS' Cold Gin. I remember Dime had Coors Light 12 pack boxes on his arms & was painted up like Ace of course. It was nothing to be at a Mercyful Fate or a GWAR show and in would walk Dime & Big Vin. No pretentiousness whatsoever. Just hanging out and buying shots for everyone. Just fans of the music like everyone else. Those were some of the best times of my life that I'll never forget. I joined the Airforce in 84 and got stationed in Ft. Worth...stumbling on to Pantera at Savvys was the best thing that ever happened to me! So much fun seeing them play, one night in 87 Phil was pouring beer into my friends mouth from the stage, he choked and blew it back at Phil, he got pissed ! A bunch a dudes were ready to kick his ass! But he explained, things calmed down.
Pantera was my life from my teens to my late 20’s.
They need to make a Pantera Movie now! they did it with Queen, NWA, and a bunch more, but i would love to see them do a movie!

Great questions... Bobby has a strong heart for doing this interview. And even the VH1 behind the music one. it must eat at his heart when everyone asks him questions and he answers with, “we didn’t really talk about that.” Or “I think it was around this time”

I saw them 3 times during Cowboys from Hell Tour. On the third show they introduced stuff for their new up and coming album. I also met Dime atone of the in store gigs he was doing. Cool funny ass talented dude. Miss them.

I'm a huge Pantera fan myself, and listening to this whole interview was awesome. Bobby's voice sounds exactly the same as it did back in the home videos, which I know all the words to by the way !
Watching those home videos as many times as I have, the whole crew along with the band members feel like family to me, and so to hear Bobby's speak of his memories was so nice.
I thought the questions you asked were great, and the openness of Bobby to answer each and every question was awesome.

Pantera was so gigantic no other band could touch it.
I run into Bobby at local shows all the time. Most of the time he’s there with Rita. He was also in Ft Worth’s local band Warbeast for a while. They were badass live and we shared a jam room with them which was cool.

I loved Dime and Vinny and was real excited when that came out, but I couldnt get into it at all.
If it wasnt for the solo's sounding like Dime I wouldnt have known it was them.
Maybe it was just transition blues and they were going to come into it.

Anything with the Abbott brothers, right? Not to say it was guaranteed to be awesome. But to hear ANYTHING I've never heard from them would be amazing.

Dime entered the talent show at Gunn Jr High. I was a 7th grader and Dime was a 9th grader. Dime dressed as Ace Frehley and ripped on the guitar and took 2nd place. A Chick playing the piano took 1st. DIME WAS ROBBED!
First of all, Glamtera rules! Nothing to be ashamed about. They were literally children writing better music than almost anything that comes out these days. Especially in the heavy metal community.

Would have been great to hear about Rebel Meets Rebel and in particular the scrapped phil vocal tracks too. When they were recording it there were several interviews talking about Phil tracking vocals, one of the tracks being a duet with DAC and him, them when it came out later on Phil's vocals are nowhere to be seen.... would be great to hear that stuff released one day

No matter what you listen to or love most in music, you have to understand how special this band was and what they stood for, to have everything lined up imperfection in four human beings at the same time to produce the music they did is remarkable and I'm forever indebted to this band and for my brother turning me on to him as such a young age I'm 36 years old now and I miss that metal nothing against these newer bands because I like a few of them but nothing will ever replace Pantera and that's all there is to it Jack.
In 1995, on march 15 in Indy after the show I got to meet these guys. Totally fn killer🤘

my first show at age 14 was Pantera/Sepultura vulgar/chaos tour1994, then 95, backstage in 96 Pantera/WhiteZombie all the guys signed everything gave us pictures , dime & rex guitar/bass pics, shirts & full signed posters, 97 tour, 98 Pantera/Black Sabbath ( my birthday), final tour 2001. 4 DOWN shows & 2 Superjoint Ritual shows all in Portland, OR NOW 42 YEARS OLD still have all tix and gear BEST LIVE BAND PERIOD! STRONGER THAN ALL

If you ever get to speak to Bobby again, ask about the Cowboys demos and what came inbetween power metal and cowboys. I heard a few rumours back in the day that they were working on some quite different material to follow up power metal but ended up scrapping it then doing cowboys?

I ran into Tongs at a festival about 10 years ago. He was walking around taking footage for Slipknot. He thought it was hilarious that I recognized him. I grew up with Pantera and saw them many times. We all watched the home videos. They are great . Anyway, he ended up giving me passes to get to the back area. Great day. He was awesome. We talked about Dime for a little bit and he couldn't have been nicer. Hope he's doing well. Pantera were the greatest. I wonder if he'll go see the tribute shows?

Very nice interview. I was really hoping "Gasoline" would be mentioned to solve a question I've had for many years. I got to see Darrell & Vinnie jam 'Gasoline a few times with Thurber, from the band 'Pumpjack' and ST playing bass. I've got many photos from that night and knowing the show was videoed by somebody. There is, one video of 'Gasoline' on UA-cam.....but I'm talking about the shows before & after that UA-cam video. They played at 'The Clubhouse' after that video, and 24hrs earlier at 'The Tattoo Bar' in Ft. Worth. I have plenty of photos from that night too. Hopefully I see those videos before I die cause I was only singing 'Bang Your Head' by Quiet Riot, with a legend playing guitar on New Years Eve at The Clubhouse. Yeah, just about anybody would brag about that too, Anyways..... After we lost Darrell. I have a video of 'Vinnie Paul's New Years Eve Bash' with 'Gasoline' but no Dime. That took place at 'Hot Rods & Hoggs' in Arlington, TX 12-31-2005-2006......I have a video on my channel from that night. I was using my digital cam but I do know it was filmed that night also buy somebody else. The handy cam is on one of my photos but dont see the holder. Rex and Bobzilla played "Walk' with Vinnie that night but I need to know who the other guys where, that where playing as 'Gasoline" with Vinnie that night.........can anybody answer that???

My favorite Pantera song as far as bass tone is Immortally Insane since you can actually hear Rex! Fun fact: Rex wrote the groovy riff towards the end of I'll Cast A Shadow 😎
@@ryanperry7136 the band wouldn’t have been the same without Rex. His timing was perfect, wrote amazing bass lines, and his tone was a large part of the Pantera sound. He knew not to overstep and let Dime shine. He could’ve wanked out solos if he wanted to but that wasn’t what they were going for. Same for vinnie

Bobby see us in the Hotel in Monterrey, Day before, Morning and after the show, and the best story, he saw us been hardcore fans, he handle me a Promo Picture of Pantera all signed by the 4 members (and he told me NOT to mention to anyone at the moment), also i saw him and Big Val on the Ozzfest 2004?! maybe, were working for Ozzy and were really nice to talk to me for a few minutes, Cheers

I met them there, as well. Dime and Rita invited me to the afterparty at Vince's in Arlington. I went. I had no choice, as it was Dimebag Darrell. I ended up losing my job after the 3rd time I partied with them lol. I was 22 and didn't give a shit about that job anyways. I even took my younger brother to a party at Vince's right before he left for Army basic training at the end of '03. They were hesitant to let him in bc he was obviously a 19 year old kid, but they started filling him with whiskey and beer when we explained he was off to basic training in a week. The brothers helped some brothers. It was bitchin.

Ive been to quite a few concerts in my life. I'm sure several people have experienced a PanterA concert before and been to other types of concerts.
Yes PanterA had supporting bands on the tour, and at the concerts but honestly I don't believe they needed them to sell out the arenas that they played in.
I never experienced that special feeling of power and connection to PanterA at their concerts, with any other bands, and those concerts. After seeing PanterA live, they left you with the feeling of, "what band could follow"!!!!???

I really hope we get a dime vision 3 soon, or a pantera 4 (probably wont happen tho). I also REALLY think they should just make a video, of as many of dimes solos and playing as they can find, just make a video mostly based off of dime playing guitar, that would be super cool. Also they REALLY should make some new/more dimebag posters. Ive seen one really cool photo of dimebag, that i really wish was a poster, but isnt.

Phil was an addict, Dime was an alcoholic and it took both of them to ruin Pantera. Booze has ruined just as many relationships/bands as drugs. The perpetuation of Dimebag being some saint and Phil being thrown under the bus is ridiculous!
