If you watch videos about dime and see older musicians from the area and time where he was, apparently he was just a humble guitarist who went to go see local bands all the time even when pantera was at its fame and not touring it shows how powerful someone who is so in touch with the music and what they can leave behind
I love that. How he starts it off. The boring dude that was repping for Randall shuts up, Dime walks out, doesn't even look at the crowd, just yells "Sup!" Thats awesome. He seems like he was such a great guy
@@XtremeKillah101I think hes just high on life and being the most badass guitarist and person in the world at that time..maybe a little weed and alcohol too lol
I really love how Dime makes that comment about how he would get an album expecting to get his ass kicked but then be let down and then go back out to find a band that would lay it down on the level that he wanted to hear... This attitude is really the heart of metal music... If you want a job done right and you wanna pulverize the listener, do it yourself!!! I miss you dude.... You truly define the essence of what this craft is all about. RIP
Partied with him in 2001. He’s exactly how he seems. We were two dumb 18 yo kids in their dressing room after a show with Pantera, slayer, static x, and morbid angel, and Dime and Vinnie treated us like we were old friends. Drank black tooth’s, threw beers to me in the shower, signed shit and took pictures on my disposable camera. Dude was an absolute legend in every way
You know it's truuuuueeee!" 🤣 anybody else say afterwards "Everything I do, I do it for youuuuuuu?" Or just me? I wonder if that was what Dime was quoting lol. What a great character to go with his metal guitar chops. A real artist, every real artist has unique characteristics and Dime was no different. You know it's him when you hear him. Hoping that the two Abbott brothers are reunited somewhere, ripping a few licks and chillin. RIP fellas, God Speed🙏🎸🥁
I never was into Pantera. I’ve heard “Walk” maybe ten times but that’s about it. But from Darrel’s lessons he wrote for guitar world. (I think) His personality came through on paper, so I always read his articles because I liked his attitude. Though I never sat down with a guitar and took in his “guitar lesson” what I did learn from him is to check my attitude. “What you habitually think largely determines what you will ultimately become”….. So I “TRY” to lose the negative thoughts and only focus on the positive. Because it’s easy to become depressed from all the negativity we’re constantly being fed. So choose the positive. You have a choice. You are master of your attitude, so choose the positive and the constructive view. Optimism is the faith that leads to success and happiness. “Absorb what is useful, discard what is not, add what is uniquely your own” ~ Bruce Lee
There's so many out there, we need to support them. Some day I will become a musician too and I wish I had a little bit of Dime's humility than talent, he was insane. Rest in peace, buddy.
I come back to this every so often. His scales and grit are so recognizable. He's up there with David Gilmour, Jimi Hendrix, and EVH as far as throwing down a solo and knowing exactly who's playing it. I always think of him as a raunchier southern-fried EVH mixed with some Randy Rhoads splashed in.
Hell yeah dude. Some people you just know instantly. I think that's a sure sign of greatness. To not just be very good at your craft, but to be defined.
That's the only good thing EVH ever did he was a smart mouth drunk and blamed Randy Rhoads from stealing riffs from him amd Randy didn't do it George Lynch said the same thing
@@isopropyltoxicity Wtf does Eddies personality have do with anything ? Dime held Eddie in high regard bc he's a guitar player , while everyone in the comments are fans ! I just turned 13 years old when Vulgar Display was released. I remember obtaining a new cassette, opening it, smelling the plastic, carboard sleeve, and ink. I remember seeing the colored pictures inside with their names. I remember seeing Dime's picture and thinking this is the guy who is on guitar, and still didn't think he was real. Their music was a big part of my teenage years. Memories that I'll treasure until the day I die. Thank you, Dime.
Ahhh...memories. The smell of new tape plastic. For me, I would have to add the smell of old fast food in a hot car in Texas as I pop the tape into the deck.
That’s a very cool story. I was a bit older so I went to the shows. It was everything you imagine and more. Now crank up the VOLUME in your imagination X 10, turn the lights off and on real fucking fast and have a churning melee of crazed, drunken, stoned, hardcore PANTERA fans flying all around you. WITH THOSE DUDES as the deafening soundtrack for this sensory overload. It was a scene for damn sure.
@@philstone3859 I can't even imagine that. We can't choose the times we grew up in but that period of the early to mid 90's will never be replicated. I absolutely LOVED VDOP, to the extent that the album cover patch of the guy getting punched is sewn on the back of my leather jacket with two circular CFH patches sewn on either shoulder to commemorate the best metal band I ever heard in my life...
I’m so jealous of the people that were there for this. There are so many questions I want to ask him, I wanna tell him how influential he would be to an entire generation of guitar players. How he doesn’t understand his own importance.. he was born mere man, but ascended to Godhood. Rest Easy Dime. We miss you!
Jesus. Go easy on the religion. He was one of the best guitar players (and probably the most social one) but that don't give him godhood. One of the things to likeable about him is his down-to-earthness. Would he have known of his importance, he would have lost that and become a jazz player. So be glad he didn't know his value.
@@domanz1 shit imma start the church of Dime and the tithes will be riffs and we’ll squeal harmonics in prayer and services will be dissecting different Pantera and Damageplan Riffs. Don’t mistake my hyperbole for idiocy. I’m not going to worship a man. You need a chill pill my guy.
He knew. I think he did understand his influence. But this man had ZERO ego. He remained this way even later into his career, based on some accounts I've heard from the early Damageplan days.
I would have given anything to have been there that day at this clinc! The playing was insane but..... My favorite part is watching Dime with his fans. R.I.P. Dime, you were truly a man among men and a stand up guy!!! You are so missed
I was disappointed they all seemed too star struck to really engage him and talk. It seems like that's what he wanted (to be engaged). Hell I would have gone full technical guitarist with him and really drilled him about his ideas!!!! Still awesome, though.
It's amazing to see him play the songs that I've come to love. So effortless and he seems like such a cool guy. I didn't get into them until years after his death so I wasn't even a fan until he was gone. Amazing artist.
It’s so crazy to see this because his guitar is literally an extension of him as a person. And those are the people who will always be remembered generations from now
Always made it all look effortless 🤘🏽. Something that I always felt was under appreciated about him was his willingness to share his “secrets”. Dude always showed his tricks and was happy to break it down. He had no ego. One of the coolest individuals to grace a stage. Blessed to have met him a few times and seen him crush it with Pantera.
@@henrywall6802Steve Vai did all the innovation on the whammy. You can literally find footage of Dime saying he stole the idea from Vai. Scooped mids? Lol wrong again, every metal band was doing that, he just did the most extreme version of it and it sounds like shit. Whammy pedal dynamics? Again done by Vai and really mainstreamed by Tom Morello, not Dimebag. Suspended chord leads? Do you even listen to music? Do you even know what that means or did you just watch a UA-camr say that’s what he did (answer: Yes). Face it, he was a great player and songwriter, that’s all. He’s not Hendrix, EVH, Malmsteen, or Vai. The world would have lost some great records, but if Dime was never born the guitar would look basically identical as it does today. Butterfly effect notwithstanding, of course.

I have my one year old sitting on my lap and he has a big old shit eating grin on his face watching dime play ... forever missed but never forgotten- vinnie and dime jamming together again! What an era it was, glad to of been a part of it!
Dime was so fucking cool man...hanging out with fans after everyone already left and just bullshitting with them. And at the end he's asking the guy if the tone of his guitar sounded good.....so he was still wanted to know what it sounded like to the crowd....idk. Just one cool dude. I met him once and it was one of the best days of my life..very surreal seeing your favorite band and guitar player a foot away from you....
Yeah, tears right off the bat. Dime had so much life in him and he showed it. Must have been so cool to hang with him. His energy is infectious. Seeing his playing in this format is incredible too. RIP DIME.
It's the angle of his wrist and hand, when he tilts the neck, he can get his wrist to be almost straight and not too bent, that way he can exert a good amount of force while still looking badass. ^ ^
I've heard he spent 6 months straight in the shitter as a teen with his axe and when he came out he was god. Maybe his toilet has something to do with it.
Some of my best memories in life involved being within a few feet of dimebag at the many concerts in many cities, catching guitar picks, moshing and singing along. Priceless!
21:36 "You ever get a chance to meet [Steve Vai] or anything? Talk to him?" "No, I heard he's into us though. I heard he's got a singer and made him skin his head back a little" That was in reference to Devin Townsend.
If this interview is in 1993, that would've been literally the year he was starting to become a name in music. Weird to think about considering how big a deal he is now.
He was so kind and genuine to his fans. Guitar aside, he was just a great fucking person. You can learn a lot just watching him interact with everyone while signing autographs. You know it’s true!
Watching dime just sittn there towards the end of the vid just signing all autographs , talking to everyone and anyone.. ...he looks so chill and happy makes me wanna cry...

Started guitar because of mick mars and Kirk hammet and slash but now my biggest influence In tone and guitar is Dimebag. Watching this makes it almost like I know the guy. No clue how anyone could kill this amazing genius. Rest in rock n roll paradise. We love and miss you so much Dimebag
You're literally watching a video on the internet of this.. recorded just like someone would do today but it's with a camcorder and not a phone, and you're freely able to enjoy it due to UA-cam and the internet. People definitely asked for pictures after with Dime, and people took bootleg pictures, recordings and videos back in the day during shows also.. The only difference is everyone couldn't afford a nice camera and camcorder. Like imagine if someone had turned to this dude video taping this and said " Bro just live in the moment, why do you have to video tape? " Same thing.
Started playing guitar around age 12. Desperately wanted to learn sweeps and all that crap. Found Dime (and the boys) at age 16 and said, "Fuck sweeps" I mean they just sound so pointless... Decided from then on, to just go for it, learn a couple of his techniques, but over all, just have fun jamming his stuff!
NOBODY ever got that tone out of a Randall. I had at least 6 friends out here in Hollywood who were "Dime-minions". They had the exact same gear, they were good. Tried to....but NEVER had that tone. It's all in the player, tweaking the tone. It's why it's better to go for your own sound, not someone else's sound. You'll never be anyone if you're always chasing others.
That and I know he would switch and mess with his pick ups and raise and lower them it’s hard to get an exact sound as someone. Same goes for synyster gates he has a distinctive sound that’s hard to recreate
@@oscarHarrison-pp3kycowboys was E 432hz and D 432hz, vulgar was the same, FBD was E 425hz and D425hz and he used that for the rest of Pantera stuff except for Drag the Waters, The Underground in America and Sandblasted Skin, Drag is C# 425hz if I remember correctly and the other two is that D 425hz but with the D tuned all the way down to a G, so the 5th and 6th string are an octave apart
Met him (and the rest of Pantera) at an autograph signing in Golden Valley Mn back in ‘97. They were all super cool. They must’ve been signing for hours but were still so appreciative of the fans. They shook hands & let everyone take pictures. Dime even asked me & my buddy if we were going to the concert that night. We said yes, & he was like “Hell Ya dudes”! Such a giant loss. Darrell's lead tone and the way he attacks them in general on this video are nothing short of priceless. I took guitar lessons at that very store -Jam music in Arlington, Texas(CFH).I remember when he did that clinic and a few days afterwards VHS copies of the entire show were available so naturally I purchased.
'Dimebag' Darrell Lance Abbott, guitar player extraordinaire! His interpretation of music, and his crafty and witty use of pentatonic scales are unlike any other guitar player before or after him. Along with his hard edged tone created a musical legacy that will inspire guitar players for the next one hundred years. A true artist with a one of a kind sonic signature!
I bet they were too stunned to speak/ask questions at first... I would be too. He's such an amazing and down to earth dude, done his best to make everyone feel confortable and not intimidated by his presence
I think he developed such a personality because he was so good people probably felt intimated around him so he got real good at breaking the ice and was very likeable
