"Nothing Shocking" is an album that continues to amaze me and you have to give it multiple listens. You'll find it is incredibly nuanced upon further review. My favorite Jane's Addiction songs are "Summertime Rolls", "Ted Just Admit It" and "Three Days". It is required listening lol 🎶
Hi Nick, David the requester here... thanks for getting to this one! I should note that where I hear the Gilmour influence is Navarro's capacity to soar high into the air, hit these intensely beautiful passages, then bring down the bombs... I'm actually thinking more of Gilmor's work in The Nile Song and Echoes than the later "classic" period. Hendrix could exhibit similar qualities (e.g. Voodoo Child, Slight Return). Echoing Tony S' recommendation of Three Days (from Ritual de lo Habitual) as the next must-listen Jane's tune. I'd go so far as to call it the "Stairway to Heaven" of the 90's.
Jane's Addiction and this album in particular was part of the soundtrack to my high school years. Alternative hard rock would be the classification I give. Maybe hippie glam post punk would work too. Recommend Mountain Song or Summertime Rolls.
Great band. I recommend the song Three Days, it's pretty proggy. And Mountain song by them is my favorite song to ski to. "Coming down the mountain!". P.s. Jane's Addiction created Lolapoloosa.
Big fan of Jane's Addiction. Perry Farrell (VocaIs), Dave Navarro (Guitar), Eric Avery (Bass) and Stephen Perkins (Drums). I can see what you mean by Perry's vocal style. It took me a few listens to get into his voice. He's not the greatest singer in the world, but his voice really suits the music once you get used to it. I was lucky enough to see them 4 times between September 1990 and March 1991 before the original line up split up. They are are still one of the best live bands I've ever seen. So much energy and passion in their performance, especially back in the late 80's to early 90's when they were at their peak. You can't go wrong with anything off the "Nothing's Shocking" and "Ritual De Lo Habitual" albums. I can highly recommend tracks like "Mountain Song", "Ted, Just Admit It", "Three Days", "Stop", "Ain't No Right" and "Then She Did". Such a great band.
Thanks Nick! This band was so great and it’s puzzling to me how overlooked they are today and almost entirely forgotten about. I guess it was a long time ago now and it’s only musicians in the know who still value their contributions. I never had a problem with Perry’s vocals, he was a great frontman, but I agree that’s he’s not the world’s best singer. With him, it’s more about the energy that he adds to the whole vibe of the band.
LA band Janes Addiction released Nothing Shocking not at the end of hair glam metal but at the peak. They were selling out clubs the same weekends Vixen LA Guns and Faster Pussycat (all great bands) were. Total different edge being born at the same time Guns N Roses and Motley Crue were the biggest bands in the world. LA club scene in the late 80s was legend.
Discovered these dudes back in the late 80's. A remarkable and talented group. Nick, I actually put in a BMC requests today for a track from their debut album. Very nice request David! Haven't heard these tracks in a while.
The live version of "Three Days" on Ritual de lo Habitual at sonic ear-bleeding levels is just amazing. Saw them on one of the last touring festival versions of Lollapalooza. They were the headlining act after Queens of The Stoneage, Audioslave (!!!) and Incubus. Freaking amazing show. Took a week for my ears to stop ringing. Also check out Been Caught Stealing on Ritual de lo Habitual, a fantastic groove and a pretty popular radio track at the time.
Have you ever listened to any of Dave Navarro's solo stuff like "Rexall" or "Hungry Girl" You can't judge Korn by one song. I hated Korn when they first came out, but now I love me some Korn. I guarantee you'd love their song "Got The Life."
Feel you, i was not impressed by Perry Farrell's singing at first but now it's like OMG Perry Farrel! My fave song besides Ocean Size, and Jane Says is MOUNTAIN SONG...looooooove it.
Awesome! Always liked what I heard from the band at the time but also forgot about checking them out further. Thanks for the reminder! Also #nicknlexrequest please 🙏 remember to fulfill your old promise to get to Joni Mitchell's Jericho (Don Juan's Wreckless Daughter version with Jaco!😍)
Definitely in my top 5 all time favorite artists. Nothing Shocking is a Masterpiece from start to finish no fillers every song is a Gem!!! Great reaction! Check out Whores , one of their best imo
There's a school of thought that says that if they hadn't broken up when they did, it would have been Jane's Addiction and not Nirvana to break underground rock into the main stream. They were right on the verge.
I wouldn't say post glam if by glam you mean 80s LA glam. Formed in 85 released albums in 87, 88 & 90. Both Def Leppard and GnR release their biggest albums and Motley Crue release Girls, Girls, Girls. 1988 Poison, Bon Jovi, Van Halen, GnR, Kingdom Come & AC/DC. By 1990 the writing was on the wall but bands like Cinderella and Poison were still putting the makeup on and releasing albums. I see Jane's as in between the rule following punk bands that were not allowed to sign to a major and the glam bands that would do anything to sign to a major. Jane's was going to do what Perry wanted or nothing and there was no room for compromise. They get a deal under the cover of night and it's kept quiet. When the all majors do come to see the band at a club Perry verbally abused all of them . 9/12 major record stores won't carry the first album because it has paper mache breast on the cover. He's asked to change it and the response is "I like my art" To smooth it over The album is sold in a brown paper bag. He makes a video for MTV that has 5 minutes of nudity in it and he won't remove it. When asked to remove the nudity his answer is "No." He did what he wanted and always gave the middle finger to the man.
I'm not really a fan but they had a side i like. Up the beach is short and very good and his singing functional and pleasant. Ocean size isn't that bad but his singing...in successorband Porno for pyros his vocals sounded much much better, not manic. Back to Janes addiction, Jane addictions best songs are Classic girl, Jane says and the last and longest one, their magnum opus three days. What child in time is for deep purple, Stairway to heaven is for Led Zeppelin or Bohemian rhapsody for Queen is Three days for Janes addiction...Magnum opus.
I love Janes Addiction seen them in concert in Seattle in the 90's I like the live album best, it has a version of "Sympathy for the Devil" a Rolling Stones cover I think is way better than the Stones did. I agree some of my favorite songs and albums I hated before I loved it. You must be a young kid. I am 51 and lived in Seattle during the late 80's and 90's right in the grunge era. Seen many of the bands Seattle had to offer. I remember when Pink Floyd The Wall was out and played on the radio all the time. Seen Pink Floyd in concert in the early 90's in Canada, Then saw Roger Waters at the Gorge in George Washington OMG that was a show. Jumbo Jet buzzed the stage right as the concert started. Freeken unreal. If you were down in the bowl around the stage you never saw it coming until it was hitting the afterburners and veering off to the right climbing up out of the desert next to the Columbia river.
Jane's Addiction is best if you're a virgin. Not kidding. Good call on the pre-grunge; there was a mini "progressive" rock transition between so-called hair bands and Seattle. But pay attention to the lyrics next time. Deep and florid stuff.
Lol, Perry’s voice is an acquired taste. For a little historical context, before there was a genre called “alternative,” Jane’s was one of the few new bands that developed a big following despite getting no radio or MTV airplay (and when they finally did, they were already on their final tour before breaking up). Their shows were huge mixes of the audience making up the musical underground of the time - i.e. glam rockers to goths, punks, metal heads and hippies, new wavers and art rockers, skaters and surfers, straights and gays, freaks and geeks etc… So while Nirvana gets the credit for destroying the formulaic sound rock had sunk into in the 80s, bands like Jane’s, the Pixies, Sonic Youth, Fugazi, and others were doing it years earlier, laying the groundwork for Nirvana’s success and the explosion of new rock bands in the decade that followed.

Changed my life! And now I'm a drummer
I saw Jane's Addiction on a double bill with Nine Inch Nails and was blown away by both. The energy was incredible.

One of the most underappreciated bands of all time.
A girl I loved named Michel really loved jane's Addiction, went to see them at the Akron Rubber Bowl with her, we were both 17.
F1rst!!! I’m a 80s teen and don’t really know much JA. Looking forward to this.
One great concert I was at in the '80's was, Living Colour, Jane's Addiction, and then Supertramp. WOW! Love them all.
Cheers Nick 🎵👍🍁
Wow! What a combination throwing Supertramp in there! Great variety 😊

Holy s***! I love this band.
😌 TY David for starting Nick on this journey! 🥰🐰

Late to the party. Up the beach has always mesmerized me and for no lyrics really hit me in the feels. Very moving

🤗 OK, all caught up on your Jane's Addiction reactions! 🥰 Seriously can't wait to see your reaction to them! ☺️🐰

I think it's the vocal sound that's an acquired taste. Ritual is a great summer driving album.

Jane’s broke it for me Not nirvana. Jane’s was such a fresh slap in the faces.
Big dramatic guitar sounds. The missing link between the hair metal of the 80's and grunge.
Pre-grunge and post glam, Jame's was the bridge to the future. This album rocks hard.

Respect to your Jean Luc Ponty album in the background
Love this. Kind of a pre-cursor to Porno for Pyros, "Tahitian Moon"

Mountain Song would be a great reaction.... Great song!
They keep reminding you of Tool but Tool should remind you of Jane’s Addiction. Jane’s came first and started the Alternative revolution.
Jane's Addiction was cool. I personally got a little more into Perry's other band, Porno For Pyro's, though.
The 80s were so bad that bands like Jane's Addiction started the 90s early.
I guess that is one way of describing it haha👍
Or another way to put it: The '90s just took the '80s underground and put it on radio.
Just a heads up Nemophila has an awesome new song out called Style, that is bringing some late 90’s style back!
You want to hear something different. Try The Paul Winter Consort doing "Icarus"
this album is a great listen 8/10

U were totally fair but if u don't buy into perry 100% it's hard to love Jane's. All the guys are great musicians but perry IS the show here ✌
I just discovered your channel, and if you have to listen to a song from this band it's three days especially if you like guitar solos
