The way these two songs should be heard...back-to-back, just as they are on record! One of the most beautiful one-two punches on any album!
Hi travis and suzy, Lots of jane's addiction still to come, but i wanted to give you a taste of the power of their music. A little background on these two songs, since they are meant to be played together. Their album, "nothing's shocking", is technically their 2nd album, but their 1st album, the self-titled album "jane's addiction" was mostly some early demos and live tracks. "nothing's shocking" was their first proper studio album, and man does it hit hard. We already did "mountain song" from this album, but these (2) tracks are the opening tracks of the album. Talk about a powerhouse opening to an album. This was Jane's addiction announcing themselves to the world. When i heard this album for the 1st time, i was literally speechless. i had never heard anything like this before. I must have played that cassette (remember them?) a thousand times. In fact, I wore it out and had to go out and buy another one just so I could keep listening to it. And when my friends and i would go to beach parties or house parties, you would likely hear this album. kids were just obsessed with this album, and even now, 36 years later, this sounds like an album that could be released today and be a huge hit. Seeing Jane's open to Up the beach for a few shows was magical!
Saw them this Tuesday and they Opened with Up the Beach, it was magical seeing the Original lineup together rocking out.
I was 16 when this album came out and it totally blew my mind, and friends' minds. So nostalgic.
Probably one of my top 10 albums all time.

Maybe it's just me, but am I the only one who thinks that Up The Beach / Ocean Size is one of the greatest openings in a debut album? And to think that Dave Navarro was just 22 when he created these amazing guitar riffs. I wish he would get his due as one of the greatest living guitarists

This album changed my life! Drummer of 34 years. I hadn't heard anything from cover to cover , like that since DEF LEPPARD Pyromania album.
FYI: next whole album to do that to me.....Third Eye Blind debut.
Runner ups. Iron Maiden, Piece of Mind. Van Halen, Fair Warning. Motley Crue, Shout at the Devil. Cult, Electric. Cure, Disentrigation. 2 Pac, All Eyes .. Three 6 Nafia, 2nd Chapter: World Domination. Primus, Frizzle Fry. Cypress Hill Skull n Bones......and so on and so on.

I own this album! 1988 I was in 7th grade. My buddy's older bro gave us this tape. It was soo different.
