- There are over 1000 Spirits Battles in super smash bros Ultimate, which means that some of them are inevitably going to contain some errors and mistakes. Today, I’m going to cover a few of the spirit battles I would change in super smash bros ultimate and how I would fix them, whether it be by changing the character’s alternate costume, the stage, the items, or even adding in DLC. I will mostly focus on franchises like Mario, Zelda, Minecraft, Pokemon, and Animal Crossing since I know them best, however I’ll be editing a few spirits from other franchises as well. So Join me as I fix some spirit battles in super smash bros ultimate!

its so weird to me that pre-dlc spirits refuse to have the characters using the default alt for spirit battles, it makes some of them really weird as the default skin wouldve been the most fitting alt to go with them
I’m pretty sure it’s because the alts are the “fake” version of the characters since the default ones would be the “real” versions of the characters?

I think it's that they are DLC. Characters that you have to pay for. Why would they be in the base game?

I think it’s for the lore accuracy, because spirits canonically use clones of the fighters instead of actual fighters, which is why they use alternate costumes to distinguish between the “real” fighter and “fake” spirit fighters. hope this helps
I agree with Gooey being the black alt. Gooey is a very dark blue and Kirby's blue alt doesn't fit that.
Plus, Gooey's a Dark Matter, so it just lines up.

It’s a very dark blue
One spirit I'd fix is the Pac-Man Ghosts, because they're all represented by a different character and don't look similar at all (including Pac-Man himself representing one for some reason??), but there are 4 Kirby alts that look EXACTLY like each Ghost's original design, so I don't understand why it is the way it is now.

Sure there could be other similar spirit fights, but I'd rather have the fight be accurate to the character it's trying to be rather than be different.
If it needs to have something, maybe you can have Pac-Man as an ally who you can't let die like some other ones, y'know?
I just want to mention that the only reason the Ribbon Girl spirit battle was changed was because she NEVER had a battle before the ARMs DLC. She was only craftable before. But I guess they decided to add Spring Man and Ribbon Girl to the board in order to have the full cast.

I'd also have the Kirbys in the Ghast spirit battle spam dash attack, because it turns Kirby into a fireball
Yeah... But on the other hand, Ghasts wouldn't really charge their frail bodies at you.
Would be better if Kirby could start with Mario or Ridley's copy ability or something

Personally, I think the Ghast spirit battle is perfect. Nobody on the roster could’ve nailed its role better than Andross.
Goro Akechi’s spirit battle should really use Joker with… you know, the alt that is obviously referencing Akechi’s colour scheme
That would also reference how Akechi himself is far too jealous of Joker and is a foil to him, so using Joker is far better. If the Akechi battle was hard, that works even better because then it would really show Goro Akechi up. He would think “even possessed Joker fights better than me?” And curse him out in a Saturday Morning Cartoon Villain manner.
I’ve always wondered why didn’t they use white Joker with a beam sword?
For Flash Man's spirit, the Timer item is used to represent his weapon, the Time Stopper...even though Shadow the Hedgehog stops opponents in place for a brief moment after slowing them down in Ultimate, which is a much better match for the Time Stopper than the Timer.
Ignoring the Geno Mii Costume since it was added later, Sheik was still a pretty lousy way to represent Geno in his Spirit Battle. I personally think the best possible option would have been Mega Man in his brown alt
Good point; Geno’s most powerful attack is a blaster attack which is a Mega Man thing.
Shadow should just be a Default Joker that spams Neutral B.
For his Neutral Special, he wields a G.U.N. truck!
or bayonetta spamming down and neutral b

the reason the spirits you listed are not in their default costumes are because they appear in World of Light, I belive that spirits that only appear on the spirit board can use the charecters default. it makes sense lore-wise why charecters can't appear with their default costumes in WOL
shadow isnt in world of light i think, and yet he's represented by a light blue sonic (if it was meant to represent the actual sonic then why wouldnt they have changed the alt to default sonic?)

There are still Game & Watch Spirits in World of Light, though, that use his default costume.
Not ALL OF THEM, because your forgetting about Mr Game & Watch WHOOOM you can face in their DEFALUT costumes in all of the Game&Watch spirit battles.
One other one I’d personally fix is fawful, i feel like it would be much better to face a giant kirby in his dark alt, who will spawn after you defeat bowser in his blue alt (who will turn giant after taking a lot of damage)
If DLC fighters adjusted base game spirits, then the White Piranha Plant should be used instead of Pac-Man for the Nipper Plant spirit battle.
I Guest That in the Super Mario™️ Waluigi Spirit Battle You Should Replace the Peach’s Castle Stage with the Figure-8 Circuit Stage and also add Mario in his 6sth Alt & Dr. Mario in his 7th Alt as Enemy Allies
they do, actually. specifically for the cuphead and mugman spirit battles, i believe.

Eggman's spirit should've been on Midgar with Scrap Brain playing. That would give the sense that you're fighting on his home turf.

Madame Broodal: Peach in red alt with a large golden PAC Man
Topper: Luigi in normal colors
Harriet: Daisy in blue alt and the only items are explosives
Rango: Yellow mega man that spans neutral special
Spewart: Donkey Kong with white alt and poison floor
Knuckletoc: Kirby in blue alt with an invisible little mac who only uses neutral B with icy floor
Torkdrift: White ROB with the blow vacuum item
Mechawiggler: Purple Yoshi with super scope in reference to the tanks used to fight the mechawiggler
Mollusque-Lanceur: Purple inkling who mostly uses up+B but can use other moves
Cookatiel: Falco with red alt with a lava floor
Ruined Dragon: Ridley in default colors with electric floor
Bowser: Bowser with a lava floor
Mechabroodal: Large ROB with green/brown alt with 3 small red falcos, with only explosives and the ROB is distracted by explosives
In mechabroodal it would be cool if the falcos helped you

Also, PAC-MAN should be gold as well, because Chain Chompikins is a golden Chain Chomp

For the Blooper spirit, I would love to change the Inklings running away from you to fighting you. No way they avoid you in the Mario platformers, they are the bane of my existence in water levels.

the bloopers try to swim above your height
you can avoid them using that trick in the super mario series

Just so you know, the reason why Mallow is Robin is because Mallow is the mage of the team, able to use various elements for attacks. So you're kinda right that Kirby is closer to the look and Robin is closer to the function
Now imagine if they gave Kirby Copy abilities in Spirit battles. Kirby with Robins lighting shock move would work too well!

Which is why it makes sense for they're to be two different versions, of course Mallow's spirit would pick a body closer fit for his fighting style, meanwhile Geno's spirit just copied Kirby's body to represent his good ol' pal Mallow!
The idea of having (almost) no one in the base custom is only applied to spirits that appear in the (rightfully ignored) story mode, were lore says that they are "clones" so they have to have a different custom
For the ‘kid’ spirit, you could also have peaches/daisies spamming forward smash with the golf club!
It straight up angers me that the toad spirit uses a mii with the toad suit and the super mushroom hat even though there is a literally toad hat.
I think it would be funny if the Happy Mask Salesman was just Mario in his purple alt (since he has a Mario mask on his bag)
I would change the Pauline spirit battle to be in omega 75m instead of normal 75m because that stage sucks and makes the battle terrible

Yea, and Rayquaza is a Primary Ace Spirit, the chance for Mega Rayquaza was right there!
Or to be honest they probably didn’t include it to not remind us of the Days of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire Online Battles. And in case your wondering Mega Rayquaza was banned even from Ubers to a Tier of its own.

I think the reason Waluigi is fought on Peach's Castle is because of the bumper, which is one of the hazards in Waluigi's Pinball course.
Gooey is dark blue so I think dark Kirby actually fits better than light blue Kirby. It might even be a nod to Gooey's relation to Dark Matter.
Fun fact in the instruction manual for dreamland two or three I forgot with one you do actually see gooey as a black blob instead of a blue one
You forgot to mention Rex got a mii fighter costume that could be used in his spirit battle
One that I feel needs a change is the Smoky Progg cause outside the Stage it makes no sense at all
Mario as a fighter makes no sense given it's a frog like creature so give it a K Rool or Ivysaur for the fighter. Making it occasionally be metal I mean its immune to poison but it literally emits poison gas from its body as it walks so change it to a Poison floor or fog (to represent the smoke). Also its boost as a spirit to give the player Urina (idk how to spell it) makes no sense when again Poison based stuff is a mechanic in the game. And if the issue is that it's the first spirit in the game... then put a Mario spirit first and just put the Smoky Progg a bit later
it's not even as if that's an iconic character, there is a good percentage of people who have even played pikmin 1 that never really met this dude

Another obvious change to make is to make the Aegislash spirit represented by Pyra/Mythra. They're literally the Aegis.

Actually, the ghast being metallic/artificial has some lore significance. In an official book that officially confirmed a bunch of theories to be true (such as the creeper having a TNT inside of it and being plant like) also directly shows us that a ghast is made of redstone components. This is straight up an official source of lore too btw.

What has me surprised is that Blaze the Cat's spirit isn't a Lucina mod, or even a subtype where it's a spirit for Sir Percival- Laura Bailey voiced both Lucina and Blaze.

Wouldn't one of the Belmonts be better for the Hammer Bros spirit because of the Axe? I mean it travels in the same arc as it, it goes through blocks, and is closer to a hammer than Yoshis egg.
I guess Yoshi is Mario-related so they went with a character in Mario versus a character not in Mario.
@@iantaakalla8180 Fair enough. Yoshi looks more like a Hammer Bro than the Belmonts (and is as equally annoying). However I always thought the process of spirits went down a ladder of importance of sorts. I.E they base the battle on the moveset similarity before basing it of looks

The Spirit Battle for The Odyssey is actually programmed wrong. The conditions list says it uses the "enemy is hard to launch" condition, but in the actual battle, the "easy to launch" effect is applied instead. This can be easily seen by the fact that the easy to launch effect makes the launch physics floatier, while the hard to launch effect makes the physics stiffer. It also increases the knockback the opponent (Jigglypuff) takes from set knockback moves like the first hit of Chrom's up B, and in Ultimate, set knockback moves ignore all knockback modifiers in the game EXCEPT the easy to launch effect in Spirit Battles.
I think this actually breaks the Spirit Battle, as the other conditions are that Jigglypuff is giant and she shields often. If the hard to launch effect were applied properly, Jigglypuff would be a lot more resistant to knockback, so the easiest way to KO her within the time limit would likely be to break her shield, which as we all know KO's Jigglypuff instantly. Perhaps this represents the Odyssey getting damaged and crashing...idk but this seems to be how you were INTENDED to beat the Spirit Battle, but because they applied the wrong effect, Jigglypuff is trivially easy to KO normally.

I can understand your issue with the defaults being better, but I think the reason Sakurai went with changing palettes a lot was to link with World of Light's lore on spirits and the clones. I personally didn't mind that decisions since I do like details that make things more fleshed and planned out, but I can see where the issue lies. Side note, I love that game mode, despite what the fanbase says.
The shadow spirit is the one that I was confused because they should have use the black alt for sonic I glad you fix that

One change I’d make is change the Lucina for a Byleth in the Mòrag spirit since Byleth's weapon resembles Mòrag's weapon the closest!

I honestly don't know who I would choose to represent Mallow's spirit...
Spolier alert for Super Mario RPG:
Mallow is someone who was raised by frogs and he believes he's a tadpole, until he learns the truth that he comes from Nimbus Land, a cloud area. So yeah, he's a cloud person... And his powers are weather based like rain, lightning and snow.
So I thought of using Lucas or Sora because of their specials but they use fire attacks which Mallow does not. In Mario RPG, Mario is the one with fire attacks so I don't think he would fit that well.. Maybe Lucas would fit better because both of them are described as crybabies and Mallow uses sticks as weapons like Lucas but I have no idea of which costume to pick, maybe the one with the purple t-shirt to represnt Mallow's signature color in SMRPG which is purple.
I would also change the stage to be Rainbow Cruise or Skyworld to match the sky theme better.
I think Kirby with Robin's hair would be the best of both worlds; it keeps Mallow's thunder magic without giving him Robin's full elemental set.
When choosing a character, most people use their default costume. Most of the spirits use alts to not confuse new players
I like mask seller battle because it's like he corrupted Link and order it to battle, if deku link was playable it will make sense for me too.

I've said this once, and I'll say it again: Smash Ultimate is the perfect game for UA-camrs, because a game which such a massive amount of content as this game is bound to have plenty of minor nitpick-able details within it for people to talk about in their videos.

I think the reason that the Shadow spirit is represented by Sonic alt 3, is because Shadow did originate in Sonic Adventure 2, and since Sonic didn’t have his Soap Shoes in the game, but the Crystal rings on Sonic r actually a reference to what he wears in the first Adventure game, so I guess it kinda makes sense, but then again it’s weird they didn’t use the black alt
To be fair, gooey has attacks that resembles zero 2 and using the dark Kirby alt represents that.

I'm surprised the Tiki Tak Tribe spirit battle wasn't covered in this video. It resembles them to absolutely zero extent other than the music being from Country Returns. So here's what I thought of instead:
Seven Mii fighters wearing a Skull Kid mask to match the tribal aesthetic of the Tikis' designs and some other outfit (haven't thought of which one yet). One of the first four will start with a Pokéball containing a Meloetta, and your left and right controls will reverse, nodding to how they use their music to hypnotize.
Mallow's trademark is his ability to use lightning based attacks. Kirby is shaped like him, but Robin has more lightning skills of different strengths, just as Mallow does.
Mii Gunner as a stand in for Geno is fine enough since Geno is all about projectiles and never gets in close.
I think the reason why the pre dlc spirits didn’t use defaults is that they were made for WOL where the defaults are the main characters, so it wouldn’t make sense to free a character only to see them again being evil

so the spirit vs diancie i really want something is fixed so the main fighter is peach white color to match the same dress color and 4 tiny blue kirbys to make sure these 4 tiny blue kirbys match the same as the carbinks, also the main goal vs the spirit is beat the main fighter to win
the sonic alt in shadows battle is supposed to represent sonic himself. the reason they didnt choose the default option was because of the equipment sonic gets in the sonic adventure games one that looks really similar to his glowing wristband

I think Sonic's appearance in the Shadow fight is a reference to Sonic Adventure as a whole; His blue alt. has blue wristbands, which are a reference to the Crystal Ring from Sonic Adventure.
For the Andross one I think Old Manondorf fits perfectly

If we're going to be changing Spirit Battles I'd like to mention that despite his Mii Costume coming back, Knuckles The Echidna *doesn't* have a spirit *at all.* So on top of giving the Tails Spirit his Mii Costume if purchased for the Spirit Battle I'd say we give Knuckles a Spirit Battle of his own with either Mario in his default costume (which would reference the rivalry both SEGA & Nintendo and their respective fanbases had in the process) or Roy/Ike (which references both Sir Gawain from Sonic and the Black Knight and Knuckles association with fire in some games) if you didn't own the costume like how if you didn't have the Cuphead Mii Costume it would be Mega Man instead. The stage would be either Palutena's Temple (which references Sky Sanctuary and it doesn't matter which form it's in) or Tortimer Island in either Ω or Battlefield form and the music would be Angel Island Zone.
Now for a Spirit Battle I'd change.
Tora and Poppi α. While it is nice that they picked someone who has glasses/goggles, *Jigglypuff* is the last character I would've picked. I would've gone with either a Yellow or Orange Luigi instead which references the numerous time Luigi has been depicted to tinker with machines (and also matches Tora's fur and orveralls) or an orange/yellow Kirby which references both Kirby Planet Robobot and the not so well known fact that Kirby is a genius with machines (he literally pilots the Robobot Armors without struggling with the controls and several of the Air Rides in Kirby Air Ride are more machine-like rather than Star-like) while Poppi is represented by a Mii Brawler in the Maid outfit while wearing a Lacy Headband in both her and Tora's Spirit Battles.
I'm not sure I'd keep the other fighters in Poppi α's Spirit Battle considering one of the represents a late game form for Poppi and have her be a Mii Fighter in the Maid outfit while wearing a Lacy Headband represents both the weird ideas Tora's family has and Poppi's second form QT. But if she had to be represented in her α form specifically I'd go with the Bionic Suit while keeping the Dixie Kong's Hat instead, the Chibi Robo Outfit just doesn't look right but if the Mii Gunner did have to be used then I'd used the same outfit combo from before. The Maid outfit is available for all of the Mii Fighters so it would still work. Not sure what to do about Poppi's final form though.
I believe they didn't have a majority of Spirits in their defaults because of World of Light. Since it wouldn't technically make sense story-wise somehow. I guess it's to show that these are just copies of the original fighter, and not the original fighter themselves, so even if the character's original color pallette makes more sense for the Spirit they represent, they use an alt. Spirit Board battles and DLC Spirits don't abide by this rule since they don't take place under the context of Galeem and/or Dharkon controlling the Spirits.

It's a bit of a stretch but I think that the Sonic in the Shadow spirit is possibly meant to represent Maria? That would make it an even stranger choice, but it would explain the Light Blue alt
I think the reason why they chose Peach’s Castle for Waluigi was because it’s an N64 stage, the system he debuted on.
