    Great shiny and clean mint survivor!
    In early 2001, a Chevrolet-Oldsmobile dealer in the west end of Toronto (Courtesy) had a 1978 98 Regency in Maroon with a matching vinyl top and the same colour interior as this example was for sale in the indoor showroom. I preferred it to the newer offerings available at the time.

      Back in 1988 I worked at a sizable used car lot in Bloomington MN. I had an older woman trade an old Towncar for a very nice used 79 Lincoln Versailles. We had to put in a windshield and clean it up as it was just traded in. When the woman picked up the car, she pulled out of the lot, onto the busy cross street right into an oncoming car and Totalled the car immediately - she didn't make it 3 blocks in that car. I felt so bad for her...

    Bill you never fail to amaze me! What a treat to see a car that came out when I was 11 and in elementary school lololol. What a time capsule !! Also a gorgeous color combination, and the lack of vinyl roof undoubtedly help this car survive without rust! This Era of cars was never my thing but I can appreciate them and at least they had style unlike todays cars. Especially the interior with all that detail and plushness. The door panels alone are made up of dozens of parts, material, bezels, faux wood, lenses, lights, etc etc etc. todays cars door panels in most cars are like 5-8 basic parts and all crappy hard plastic. These were cruisers for sure. Supreme comfort!!!

    This is one gorgeous '79 Regency and best color combo. I remember seeing the chrome wheel option in the sales brochures I picked up as a kid from the New York Auto Show. Those coupled with no optional vinyl roof give it a very sporty look. It's unusually equipped - besides the rare factory rims and rare steel roof, it was optioned with the auto A/C and dual power seats but no power door locks or cruise control.

    The best I can discover is there were 3 engines available in a 1979 Oldsmobile 98. A 350 Oldsmobile VIN R, a 403 Oldsmobile VIN K, and a 350 Oldsmobile Diesel VIN N. The 88's (and other Oldsmobiles) in addition to those 3, could have come with a Chevrolet V8, (G,H or L) plus the Oldsmobile 260 (4.3ltr) V8 gasoline or diesel. There are even a few 88's with the 301 (4.9ltr) Pontiac V8, and 3.8ltr V6 Buicks, but the 98 and Custom Cruiser (both C Bodys) were limited to the R, K, and N Oldsmobile V8's.
    This car also has the incredibly rare option of telescoping (plus tilt)steering wheel. Incredibly rare on an Oldsmobile that is. It was originally a Cadillac C+D Body option and the Buicks got more of them than Olds. My understanding is it was a C Body only thing. They are easy to spot because they only came with the 3 spoke steering wheel (ala Cadillac). I'm kinda surprised that this car doesn't have delay wipers or washer fluid level warning indicator, and cruise control, because those plus the 403 were very common option upgrades and the telescope wheel the rarest (and probably the most expensive option).
    And for the record, my 1979 Oldsmobile has that same clock and it still works just fine. Lol

      Remember the big class action lawsuit in the late 70's where is was about engines. I think someone bought an Olds 88 and found out it had a Chevy 350 and they sued GM saying they bought a Olds and expected and Olds engine not a Chevy. I remember later on a sticker with wording with a disclaimer that GM may used engines across divisions and all the brochures had the same disclaimer.

    • @oldsguy354
      @oldsguy354 Рік тому

      @@groovy1937 I'm well aware that the engines used across GM lines caused consumer perception problems, I was just pointing out that on the 1979 model year 98's that wasn't a problem because they all came with an Oldsmobile engine. If you find one with a Chevrolet, Buick, Pontiac, or Cadillac engine you'll know it wasn't factory equipped as such and it might be a good idea to find out what else was swapped. The A and B Body cars could have an engine (other than a Cadillac engine) from a division other than the cars brand, but not the C Body Oldsmobiles (98 & Custom Cruiser). The full size (C & D Body-there was no B Body Cadillac) 1979 Cadillac's could have come with an Oldsmobile Diesel V8, but the Cadillac 425 (7 ltr) was standard equipment, and a much better engine in my opinion.

    • @groovy1937
      @groovy1937 Рік тому

      @@oldsguy354 Oh yes, I get what you were pointing out and I understand. Agree, the Cadillac 425 was a great engine.

    • @oldsguy354
      @oldsguy354 Рік тому

      @@groovy1937 While I prefer (preferred) the Oldsmobile 425 (most were high compression monsters with 360+ HP 470+ lb/feet torque, ended in 67 or 68) the Cadillac 425 (77 thru 79) was incredibly smooth with a better than mild sensation of torque on the low end. I can't remember for sure but I think it was an under bored, de-tuned, reduced compression 472/500. The Cadillac 425 had similar performance specs to the Oldsmobile 403 (available 77-79 only also, which itself was a dramatically over bored 350 small block). The 403 was the largest displacement engine available and widely used across the BOP (Buick-Olds-Pontiac) full size cars 77-79, and even many Fire Birds with automatic transmissions, but Cadillac had to be different and wanted to claim a Cadillac engine. The funny part is, by 1987 Oldsmobile got the 307 up to decent output numbers, and finally made a tough version of the TH200-4R transmission, so the RWD Cadillac Brougham came with them as standard equipment. The only option was a Chevrolet 305 with a 3 speed automatic (I'm almost certain that it was a TH350C transmission), and no Cadillac engine was available. Lol The 2 things I liked about the Cadillac V8's over the Oldsmobiles were the distributor was upfront and the intake manifolds weren't prone to leaking out the back. The bad part was the Cadillacs had the huge A6 A/C compressor right in the middle on top of the engine taking up whatever space was left next to the distributor and made getting at the Quadrajets (and everything else) tougher.
      Anyway, sorry for the long story, it's not very often that my area of (presumed) expertise comes in handy to add info to a youtube video. Lol And whatever you do, don't get me started on the header panel likenesses and differences for 1977 thru 1979 88's, 98's and Custom Cruisers, I can put gorillas to sleep with that story lol

    Oh forgot to mention the Regency option was the Oldsmobiles version of “De Elegance” that Cadillac had with the pillow tufted seats and all the wood and trinkets that made it special. I personally think that the Regency interiors were just right. The Cadillacs had too many tuftings which bordered on ridiculous/insanity!!! Lolololol

    • @jtralongo1
      @jtralongo1 Рік тому

      Actually, the Regency came first. My old friend Blaine Jenkins designed the Regency interior for Old's 75th Anniversary. He told me when Cadillac saw it, they tried to steal it for the DeVille, but the 14th floor said no way. So, in 74, Cadillac created its own version of the pillow top seat, and as you say, went way overboard.

      Don’t get me wrong if I had a choice of an 80s or 90s Cadillac reg trim spec or DeElegance I’d chose the DeElegance even if a bit much! Lol my late father at one time owned a 77 Eldorado Biarritz. That interior was a bit much but in the day I felt like a million bucks when I drove it. I swear the pillow top seats in that car were filled with feathers but I’m sure in reality it was just foam.

      Don’t be surprised on the paint. I’m surprised how Great the paint still looks over all !! I worked for Buick 1985-6 and recall people coming in with 1-3 year old cars with paint dulling, pealing, wear through etc. one guy had a Champaign color Electra Park Avenue with brown leather seats fully loaded sunroof 8 cassette CB radio etc. his paint was already very dull. Our service Manager told him some bS that it’s a metallic color and metallics in general don’t have much shine etc. he then said “My brother in law just bought a new Light metallic blue Lincoln Towncar and it shines like a Diamond “. The service manager had poker face and said I’ll try to work with a Regional Rep to see if we can touch it up”. Customer replied “ EXCUSE ME??? I want the entire car repainted not touched up! For what I paid it should NOT look like this already !” Eventually going back and forth our local body shop that did warranty word did a base coat clear coat on it (A new type of finish back then only used by some car makers on some of their vehicles). It looked awesome after that and the guy smiled ear to ear when he got it back and thanked everyone. I recall he gave the manager a case of nice wine!!

    • @groovy1937
      @groovy1937 Рік тому

      @@jakereal3604 Yes, I forget this was before clear coat. I remember our cars in the 1970's, we kept them in the garage and I waxed them twice a year - that helped a lot. If you kept them outside and not protected by wax they went to heck fast, especially the vinyl tops. I remember when armour all spray came out and that was like a miracle for keeping vinyl tops protected and gave a nice shine. I used to put it on the tires - no one did tire dressing then. 10 year old kid that took care of cars - unheard of today. Dad had me working with him on the cars when I was 7 years old - tune ups, oil changes, radiator flush, carb rebuilds, etc. Had me wax those cars too. Turtle wax was hard to buff off, not like the easy polishes of today. I remember when NuFinish came out and I loved it and have been using it for 45 years. I agree that certain GM colors faded or had problems. I recall seeing some on the lot especially metallic paints that had issues (light spots). I recall I read somewhere that the 1977 Lincoln Versailles was the first American car to start with clear coat, so Lincolns had clear coat early on. I recall seeing a Mustang on the showroom floor in the 1986 that had a hideous factory paint job. I think all our GM cars we had when I was growing up had decent paint jobs that lasted well, of course I took care of them.
