- Mr. Goodpliers brings the latest Malaise Rescue, this 1979 Oldsmobile 98 Regency coupe. Come along and have a first look, walk around and start up!
Those Olds engines were great. I've been running a 403 in my 81 GMC pickup since 1986. Smooth, strong and trouble free performance all these years.
I absolutely LOVE the 98’s!!! I hope to afford one someday.
Oldsmobiles. I just love them...
I had a 78 olds 98 regency brougham 2 door when I was 17
It had a 403 and I had headers and dual exhaust with trans am firebird dual tips
That was an awesome car
It had every option
Great car! I have a near mint ‘79 98 Regency coupe in Dark Camel Metallic with only 61k miles. I love that car! So elegant!
Well alright! That car deserves a second chance man! I wish you put in the road with all magnificent again! 👌 I believe it wheel be a joy you working on this car. Nice video thanks for sharing,
cheers from Portugal 👍😎
Nice find fabulous shape
Nice looking ride! Good luck getting her back on the road.
The seats remind me of a booth in like an old dimly lit pizza parlor.
Nice shape for the year 👍👍
Mr. Good fliers did you notice that the 98 had the CB radio option that's cool?
Hope you'll take us along as you work on this car.
my favorite car
Beautiful!!! I wish it was a Diesel! Watching from NW Arkansas.
I was born in 1965 and when I was in junior high those cars were brand-new and I remember they were nice cars my dad bought a brand new 1978 Ford Granada Gia we looked all over for it for The fully-loaded model power windows power locks tilt Cruise lighted vanity mirror believe it or not I had everything even the clock am and FM 8-track? It was silver with silver interior silver vinyl top the color wire wheel covers it was a nice car but I always liked those Oldsmobiles you could get a nice Oldsmobile wire wheel hubcaps would look nice on there if you can't find those special road wheels you're looking for cuz you can find those wire wheels a diamond dozen probably. I do love your videos I enjoy all these old cars I wish I lived close to you because living here in Oregon we have hardly any junkyards and I have no friends to talk to cars about so that sucks
Cornoring lights were optional, nice Cutlass Surpreme Brougham? in the background. the road wheels were rare, wirewheels were common. the 2 doors were rare. Factory CB was rare too. WOW a Bricklin... very rare....
I had a 78 great ride
Love it. As old as me.
My parents only bought Oldsmobiles; they bought a '79 new, also maroon four door 98 Regency, loaded for $8300 off the lot. I learned to drive with that car. Great cars despite the times and Gov't regulations of, yes, the Malaise years!!
That would make a nice daily driver!
My dad had a 1980 Regency. 1989-1994. His last car.
I had a grey 78 Oldsmobile 98 regency 4dr it also had the red leather interior non vinyl top they and the cutlass from 78-85 had two versions of the full cover aluminum stainless hubcap similar to the road wheel edition caps,5.7 350 Oldsmobile v8
Watson is still in Nebraska...some nice factory aluminum wheels would be excellent. I use a set of Mopar cop wheels on my '76 Valiant (V8/A51) as well as a set of Lincoln LSC 16" turbine wheels (only had to enlarge the center register holes by about 1/16-1/18" and they bolted on). Both wheel sets look right on the car.
I sold Chevys and Oldsmobiles for three years starting in 1985. That was the first year of the new body style 98s. I sold a bunch of those and took in on trade a lot of the older body styles, including some coupes. Those trade ins weren't much different than the 79 in the video. I always liked their floating cushion interiors. Some of the most comfortable I have experienced.
Loved the wild cat
That noise on start up is probably the torque converter missing its bolts.
Exactly!
Oh man those full size heel covers look great on Squarebodies
Cool 😀
I did videos on,a couple of these cars last year! I sure had fun playing with them!
I had one when I was 23
If only I was closer I could overhaul that transmission. 👍❤🇺🇸
Surprised that it even started
Great video ! I love driving old cars, I drive my 1981 Oldsmobile Delta 88 daily in the summer. I prefer driving my Oldsmobile over my mum's 2019 Toyota Hilander.
I have a 1985 it runs very good it old farmers car
I hope you do a video about the dodge also
'I know you hate my 98..so now I gotta Bronco!'- Public Enemy.
I've seen lots of them in the auctions and when they put it up for bid and no one would jump in, I would wait to the last minute and toss a twenty five dollar bid in. People at the auction knew that if they tried to run me up, I would just walk away. On those cars someone would invariably ask me later if I wanted it for what they bid and I would say no, I bid what I would pay and they would then say sold if I would give the twenty five bucks. I had a good couple kids that liked to earn money and they would detail those rigs to like new paint and smell nice plus power wash under the hood and places needed. I bought mostly diesels as they were the most common and would hold up real well. I have a great story about heading to work and a patrolman tried to stop me when snowing/LOL.. kinda long so won't right now. I bought them for twenty five and paid the kids on how well they did. One hard to do car was a real nice rig and it was funky. They put their hearts into it and done a excellent job... I gave them two fifty apiece for that nice work and after that they busted hump to make them all that nice... they went on to start a detail shop and made a ton of money. All in all, I would have normally about five hundred into a olds like that one and sell it in a few days for advertised twenty five hundred and take on the dicker seventeen hundred. Good money for just spending some money.
That is what I always say...If it was good enough for GM it's good enough for me! My daily driver is a 1980 4-door cutlass. It has a 1988 Monte Carlo SS drive train in it. VERY DEPENDABLE DAILY.
This unit looks pretty good. Are you selling? I love the malaise years cars!
Love this body style of the 98. Too bad most of these and the custom cruisers were used as demolition cars
The docking fees for that boat are going the be pretty costly lol .
@@dcformee123 I'm 65 years old and yes a 59 Caddy is bigger , but the 79 Olds 98 is still big . I'm glad he is saving it .
Tim you read my mind again, I own a cutless Supreme 1984 excellent car w great gas mileage, wished I still had it.
Are you sure were not related? Alot of similarities again
Vice grip garage is looking for parts for an old truck, maybe you all can get together on some parts.
Reminds me of my boyfriend grabbing me and pulling me close to him in the front seat. Kissing while waiting for the light to turn green. Who the hell needed a motel room when you had a back seat? Lol!
I can tell you EXACTLY what is up with that car. Some Kid decideed to do Reverse-drops with that car. Pull the trans and you will find a Broken Flex Plate. I knew that is what heppened when you started it, that is how they sound. That trans is TRASH it probaly has a Broken Input shaft. New flex-plate and different Trans and that car will be Good to go!
Old cars like these are popular now because of people being rebellious of modern tech computer bullshit cars...not to mention all the ugly SUVs on the road now.
Amen, and pre wrecked looking Camry's! Now they come from the factory with squished up front ends and wrinkled sides!
Do you still have this car and what are you doing with it please comment back thank you very much this this is a nice car
You are right and unfortunately that's the way it is.
Could need a shim for the starter
I've been seriously thinking of doing a rescue of an Oldsmobile 98 Regency from this vintage ('78-'84) for my next daily driver in a few years. Any tips on where I could find one, find a quality shop to do it or anything else I should know?
I have a 4 door that runs and drives, with good title. It needs a few repairs but it is a good solid car. I would happily sell it. They are good durable cars, with straightforward maintenance. Most sales are happening on Facebook Marketplace, but there's still some action on Craigslist
@@mr.goodpliers6988 I'd love to buy it but moneywise I'm in no shape to right now, I need to save for probably 2-3 years before I can attempt it, like I said in a few years. I'm doing some research now because I previously had a late 80s Delta 88. I loved everything about it, but soon after I got it it fell apart one piece at a time. Then to compound some questionable repair places there was also the issue of extremely questionable replacement part quality. Even brand new AC Delcos were failing after a year, usually less. I'm trying to avoid something like that happening again, so I'd prefer to get something that either has had a fair amount of work done on it already or a junkyard rescue like that. Even if it drives when I get it I know it's going to have issues with seals and rubber parts going bad soon afterwards.
@@mr.goodpliers6988Something of an update, I figure I'll have enough saved to try to buy one in this coming February. I'm ok with it needing repairs as long as it doesn't need body work (ok paint and no rust), hopefully it will be at a price I can afford so I can keep it on the road. I'll reach out again in a few months if you still have it. Thanks.
It looks as though it can use some TLC.
Your welcome
Would have been a nice car when it was new.
Ok
Olds version of Coupe de Ville.
So sad to see it in this condition.
But I not understand, is it for repair or (scrap & parting)???
