    Call the show on Sundays 4:00-6:00pm CDT: 1-512-686-0279
    We welcome your comments on the open blog thread for this show.

    UA-cam comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of UA-cam comment sections, in our experience.
    We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

    WHAT IS THE ATHEIST EXPERIENCE?
    The Atheist Experience is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared at a non-atheist audience. The Atheist Experience is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
    The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop and support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing and friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of state-church separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists and to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
    We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

      At least Wikipedia has citations to back up what's in its articles. I'm not saying it's a totally credible source but there are at least citations. And you're right, "research" doesn't mean just googling something, which was my point.

      I was born into a family that professed to be C of E. We never went to church, we never spoke about religion. Our religion was purely for putting on official forms. Saying that, during my early teens I went through a period of examination. It probably took me a couple of hours to come the conclusion that there is no god. I already knew, at age fourteen, that there was no way of proving god could exist.

      I’ve had a creationist ask me if I was raised this way, which personally the question took me by surprise. Most people will assume I was raised in the religion and defected later, but that was the first someone thought that I did not come to this conclusion on my own.

    This caller is extremely dishonest. The Richard Dawkins quote isn't don't ask "why" questions. It's when people ask why are we here, why is there something rather than nothing, what is my purpose? He argues that we are asking the wrong question of why, because it's begging the question. Assuming that there is some sort of reason for it all. Instead we should ask how the universe is here, how did we get here, how is there something rather than nothing. This is dishonest and it seems purposefully taken out of context.

    • @oscargordon
      @oscargordon 5 років тому +20

      Apparently why there is something rather than nothing is because there are other realms with sentient beings in them that caused our realm to exist. Our purpose is to tell the beings in the other realm how really awesome they are.

      oscargordon ...okay, well I think that if Leprechaun’s could just know how awesome and great I think that they are, then perhaps they’d be willing to share the gold with me. The claim that the gold is usually found at the end of the very rainbows that god makes is to show us that he feels bad about drowning millions of his children that he loved soooo much, but he then realized that he made a mistake and gave us the rainbow to make up for his cruelty and promised to never do that again, is also awesome. However I assert that the Leprechauns are much better in the gift giving department, but whatever.

      @Sun Flower I'm not sure. I'm more inclined to believe that religions are in decline because of laziness, people don't like to get up early on Sundays, pray 5 times a day nor having to different sets of china in two virtually separate kitchens for dairy and meat; that combined with people being very little informed about history, geography, religion, art, etc. the contact or exposure to religion is even lessened. In summary the fact that conspiracy theories are such a problem and misinformation/fake news is growing rampantly leads me to think that is not that people are "waking up", people's epistemological toolkit is as shitty as always, but that religions are just falling out of favor for multiple reasons and haven't been able to keep up with society's needs, for a second line of argument look up Christianity in China and how it is growing under the CCP authority, some bishops have even replaced Jesus with Mao, adapt and survive.

    I would get ridiculed by others and in a sense atheist shaming( which was the weirdest thing because the teachings would say to love on another and have an open mind to listen)

    • @timhyatt9185
      @timhyatt9185 5 років тому +3

      to be fair...a LOT of rock strata are named for the region they're first described in, particularly those studied early in the rise of the field of Geology. The first geologists were in England and so the Cambrian, the first location that strata was studied, was near Cambridge....it's also why there's epochs named Pennsylvanian, and Mississippian.... But his miss characterization of the Cambrian Explosion indicates he got his info from a YEC Creationist site...like AiG....

      I actually know people who think in a similar fashion, not as bad as this example was, although they also tend to not be religious.
      In fact the way folk are dumbed down these days, the distinction between learning disability and merely not educated, or resistant to education has become blurred.
      For some time learning has been seen by the young as not cool or upper class or posh, and many come to believe education and learning things is not necessary. Many cannot wait to leave school or college, so they don't have to learn. Then they imagine they will magically have some kind of skills or knowledge that an employer would be willing to pay them for.
      Many imagine they will simply get more intelligent as they get older kind of automatically, with no effort, reading or learning.
      We need to mend our education systems. For the working class majority of boys especially.

    The "young earth" argument is a complete waste of time when you consider that young earthers ultimately admit that some things were created "with the appearance of age." If this is the case, then why not be consistent and accept that the earth appears to be 4.4 billion years old for this very reason? Why argue that the earth is 10,000 years old only to eventually concede that stars only appear to be billions of years old due to the "appearance of age"

    • @martingrundy5475
      @martingrundy5475 5 років тому +1

      Probably because they have not begun to consider that. They also seem to have been conditioned to try to not concede any ground. I don't think most see much past that, until half way committed to an argument or position.
      Most of them have very little in the way of interest in actually understanding anything, and the only real reason and impetus comes from using it to attempt to prop up or bolster thier belief in a deity.
      They often appear to merely assume they are every bit as educated and just as understanding of a subject or topic as everyone else is. After all, why not. They are after all just another intelligent human being, who has gone and done some research, so are on an equal playing field. Right? They assume.
      They fail to realise that what they assume is research is really doing the very minimum possible, and could really only be called basic homework in the loosest fashion. They very often fail to recognise when someone who quite evidently, obviously, clearly knows thier subject and is patently highly educated and with breadth and depth of understanding few have. More often than not they either don't see it, or down't or won't recognise the fact. Embarrassingly continuing to bang on and on, all whilst being constantly corrected.
      It is, or invariably becomes the very embodiment of the Dunning Kruger effect, on Acid. Hyped up to a level of incorrigibility, and arrogant stubbornness only possible with years of indoctrination into a dogmatic ideology.
      Intellectual honesty and integrity, actually knowing and more importantly understanding, all take a back seat in preference of preserving what they have been conditioned and coerced into accepting as thier belief.

      And having High IQ is measured on how many tabs someone has open, remember?

      @@PengwynLOB - That sounds like flat earther justification. If you look at a flat earther video, and they happen to show their computer screen, have a look at how many of those tabs are UA-cam pages. Seriously high IQ research.

    "Of all the great inventions and discoveries that go to make human life easier, happier, more rich and glorious, not one can be laid to the work of theology. These triumphs all belong to science.... If man had no knowledge except what was got out of the Bible he would not know enough to make a shoe."

    Kind of disturbing to hear this guy use the word skeptical if an old book convinces him of truth.

    Notice how Theists wants to question Atheists reasons for being Atheists, but gets triggered when confronted by the very same concept.

    'Perspective' seems to be the new word the day on this guy's calendar. He hasn't yet figured out what the word means but he tries to use the word in whatever context he erroneously surmises that it might fit. 'If you understand information theory'... Wow. Mark is a wonderful example of the Dunning-Kruger effect - brightest guy in his living room.
