Science: gather evidence, then come to a conclusion. Start with “I don’t know,” then “Let’s find out.” Anti-science (religion): Start with the conclusion, then try to find evidence to support it. Start with “I know,” then “Let’s justify it.”
He's talking about "intermittent reinforcement". It's a behavior analysis mechanism that rewards a behavior on a random schedule. It was described by B.F. Skinner (skinner's box), and its use as a way to increase the rate of engaging in a particular behavior.

The thing is they do NOT think about it. They have accepted it as being fact from childhood and threatened not to even begin thinking about these things. They have also been sold on the con job of faith, and that it is perfectly reasonable, even laudable to take things as being real or having some veracity simply by dint of will and wishing it to be so. It is also pretty much an emotional and often knee jerk reaction. It can be difficult to get some people to even look at what they think and why, thinking and logic in general are either poorly taught or not at all. Religions tend to worsen and exacerbate this situation purposely, to establish and maintain the flocks.
Most "devout" Christians are going to look at anything an Atheist says with a certain level of suspicion, and probably be questioning their motives the entire conversation. That's why alot of the Theist callers twist themselves into knots to avoid being "trapped" by an argument. But, this particular caller was more open-minded and seemingly more rational than most. I loved the call. John was one of the first callers that actually considered the other point of view and recognized when good points were made. He's on a journey right now. The cognitive dissonance is strong. But it's turning....
Part of John's mess was "no evidence I am correct. Probably never gonna know. But if a side is ever proven...it'll probably be that I'm wrong. "Til then, I have the God-given gift of curiosity to seek answers. And so far, God seems like a pretty handy dandy answer to most of those questions. So..."
"Don't fight evolution, because you will never win. 'Nature never hurries but it is always on time'… KNOWING that is true. I was taught to respect the planet and its process.
I started (as a theist) reading the Bible cover-to-cover every year. After 17 readings, I could no longer "believe" that the Bible was the "word of God". I can no longer justify my (previous) beliefs. Note: Danger...danger! If you are a Christian, DO NOT read the Bible!! Not if you want to remain a Christian!😄
That's a good point. Clearly I've never bothered to think about my beliefs before, I've just accepted everything I've been told. Then I've tried to justify those beliefs by shoehorning and distorting science to fit. I clearly have an enquiring mind like all my fellow believers. My enquiring mind goes only so far to allow my beliefs to stay intact.
This caller is in a position similar to what I was in few years ago when I was a Buddhist and an Undergraduate in Science. I knew science contradicts some parts of Buddhism. But I wanted to be a Buddhist and I tried to justify my believes in a way similar to this caller. There are some amazing sayings in Buddhism that can be related to Modern science. For an example Buddhism rejects the idea of a beginning and an end to the universe thus rejects the need of a creator. And Buddha invites for all living things from all the galaxies ("Chakkawalesu" in old Pali language) to come and listen to him in the start of an Dharma diacussion. He do an interesting explanation on microscopic and strange looking things living in decaying maaterial. And he described 4 others ways that afffect person's life other than Karma one of which included the inherited bilogical factors. So I guessed if he knew about all thsoe things 2500 years ago he must have been an enlightened person. It took me another few years to realize Buddhism has turned in to another religion. It uses the same fear of hell and endless suffering to keep people in the track. And I tried to justify the things in my releion with locial arguments and science untill it was not possible anymore. Now I follow Buddhism just only as a part of my culture. Not as a religion at all.
Ultimately, I think I'm okay with this guy. He engages honestly and patiently with his interlocutors, acknowledges when he doesn't have a good answer, and seems to have a genuine ability to listen. He may come around; he may not. But I have a feeling that in time his curiosity may eventually override his loyalty to ancient doctrines.
Yeah, I'm almost certain he will eventually reason himself out of his beliefs. The fact that he responded to Matt's first three points with "that's a good point" rather than with knee-jerk whataboutisms is a really good sign.
"I don't believe in intellectual lazyness. So here's a long stream of intellectually lazy arguments, that are the result of a lot of hard work creating post hoc rationalizations."
"I agree", "I give you that","You're right". This is the king of responses one would expect from logically thinking minds. No surprise there coming from a mathematician.

John is like he's clinging to a sinking ship . As more and more of the ship sinks below the surface he has less and less to hold on to until only the tip of the mast is left . And at the end instead of just letting it go he continues cling on and follows the ship to the bottom .
I highly appreciate the caller’s calmness and politeness. I think he came to the show legitimately to learn about atheism and his faith and not just to affirm his own pre existing notions. I think if he starts talking on the show regularly or reading up on atheism more, maybe he just might deconvert like his friend.

Matt, you are a very articulate educated liberal human being. You take exception with callers that use personal opinion to color their arguments. It's all about the facts and evidence that drives you to help others make informed decisions about their faith and beliefs. I have your mindset when it comes to belief in any god or supernatural being. For someone with so much empathy toward other humans, to insert your snide opinion about a political figure does not seem to back your assertion of empathy for all. I neither possess your intelligence nor your political view but maintain a respect for your right to have it. In my opinion it places a bruise on your segment of the show that could be tabled for a different platform. I will continue to follow you despite the hiccup.
Did Matt looked guilty about whatever was happening on his computer? His computer keeps making notification sounds and around 32:30 it's like he sees the computer and instantly hangs up. It also seemed like he was trying to hide the screen from John. 🤔
He sounds like me a very long time ago. Same technical mind but still emotionally attached to belief. And I read the bible extensively. It's like being deeply in love with someone so you rationalize their flaws.
On more than one occasion, I've noticed Matt treating a polite, thoughtful theist quite gently, going out of his way to assure the caller that he's not trying to be mean or unfeeling or aggressive. He doesn't always have that line pre-loaded, for example, on this call Matt hesitated before saying he didn't want to beat the caller up. I'd like to help Matt avoid this in future, by suggesting the term, "I don't want to piss on your chips".
If it were true, not only does the devil know god is all powerful, but god knows about the devil, and being all powerful he should be able to just make him disappear, but doesn't. They're in cahoots. Your god is playing games with you.
You should look at the book of Job. It's akin to god and Satan having a bet, with Job getting the bad deal from it. A little like Dan Aykroyd's character in 'Trading places'
A loving god wouldn't have created cancer either. But babies die from it all the time. There is no justification for this that will convince me that a loving god exists. And since xians think their god is all loving, that makes their god either an evil monster or non existent. Based on the evidence I will go with the latter.
We know that God designed and manufactured us using the best ingredients available. And we know God made every effort to ensure we are of the best possible quality. So why are there so many rejects ?
So what John is saying , in a round about way is . I believe there's a god because I really really want to . Even though the evidence doesn't lead to a god or logic , rationality and reality all conflict with it . I'm going to ignore all that and believe in a god anyway , because I really really want to . Not a great mindset for physics John .

@@mysticwine many of the theist callers don't know their own holy book, they base their belief on what someone else told them, usually starting with their parents and later on their priests/preachers. It has been said, the best way to convince someone that xianity is not true is to have them read the bible.
I was a member of a pentecostal group. So matt's is so true. Moving away from irrationality was painful and it took very long. I read books and watched shit ton of youtube debates on the topic. It was not a one off but rather a series of ideas coming in.

Nice to see a caller who actually want answers and have an honest debate, instead of insisting the bible is true.
The bible is real,
What's in it is a load of bollox though.
What frustrates and fascinates me to no end is that despite flawless arguments believers are often incapable of accepting that maybe they were wrong in the first place. I suppose our comfort zones especially when it comes to life and death must be very difficult to abandon.

OK, he's not a dumb guy, but he's not nearly as smart as he thinks he is. None of us is all that, except for a very few, but this guy went the poetry route toward a satisfactory interpretation of the "word of god". You can see Matt really enjoyed interacting with an intelligent theist who can argue honestly.
One of the most intelligent good faith callers I’ve seen, and I’ve listened to most of these videos to be perfectly honest.
Science: gather evidence, then come to a conclusion. Start with “I don’t know,” then “Let’s find out.” Anti-science (religion): Start with the conclusion, then try to find evidence to support it. Start with “I know,” then “Let’s justify it.”
This was an excellent talk.

This looks like: Welcome to the ‚Matt and his father‘-show 😂
This is one of the most honest calls to the show.
6:35 The universe's hide and go seek champion 😂
Those windows sounds... I thought something was going on with my PC hahahaaaa
It's easy to make generalizations fit, but very hard to make specifics fit.
That's a good point after point after point Matt.
There are people who pursue degrees in science for the sole purpose of subverting that science, or for justifying their pre-conceived ideas.
That's evil. But plausible.

A loving god wouldn't have created cancer either. But babies die from it all the time. There is no justification for this that will convince me that a loving god exists. We know that God designed and manufactured us using the best ingredients available.
And we know God made every effort to ensure we are of the best possible quality.
So why are there so many rejects ?
So what John is saying , in a round about way is . I believe there's a god because I really really want to .
