UA-cam comments are at present disabled in our channel, to the displeasure of some. However, each video has a prominent link to the associated open thread that appears on our blog. In the past we've tried opening up the channel to comments, but we found that a very high number of episodes wound up being flooded with a combination of spam, long winded apologists, and various obscene or misogynistic comments directed at various hosts by people with an axe to grind. This seems to be the nature of UA-cam comment sections, in our experience.
We do moderate the blog, the same way that we moderate chat during the show, as well as comments on our Facebook group. For comment sections that are "officially" associated with our show (and, to a much lesser extent, channels that may give the unintended appearance of being official), we prefer not to play host to straight up ad hominem attacks and bigotry. As a general policy we do not block commenters simply on the basis of disagreement with our point of view. However, we do prefer discussion environments that don't actively chase off more reasonable contributors.

I completely disagree with the caller, however I have to give him credit for the fact that he is able to have an actual conversation instead of talking in circles, like most of the people who call the show.
He has a higher IQ than most callers plus taking physics classes is helping him.
He sounds somewhat "intellectually hobbled", possibly by indoctrination.
It can be terribly powerful.
I don't doubt he would never consider using such thinking and reasoning when doing science, or when something actually matters in the real world.Such as say a loved one being taken ill. The best doctors would be consulted, one would not be relying on faith.

This reminds me of my own mindset as I was close to loosing my faith. I tried really hard (as many have) to reconcile my faith with science.
I was able to do it “to my own satisfaction”, until I presented my “reconciliation of science and the Bible” to atheists and they were able to easily demolish it.

John was one of the most rational, well-educated callers you've ever had on the show. Sad to realize he's wasted his life trying to believe nonsense and fantasy that hasn't brought him much happiness or peace.

What frustrates and fascinates me to no end is that despite flawless arguments believers are often incapable of accepting that maybe they were wrong in the first place. I suppose our comfort zones especially when it comes to life and death must be very difficult to abandon.

It's sad to see that a few smart people believe for no good reason. Majority are brainwashed from birth so I see why they wouldn't want to give it up but it's pretty clear religion is a man made explanation for the unexplainable. What is your definition for corrupt science? Perhaps it's the science that doesn't begin with the assertion that the bible is always correct regardless of any evidence to the contrary? (spoiler alert, that's all science)

@@mysticwine many of the theist callers don't know their own holy book, they base their belief on what someone else told them, usually starting with their parents and later on their priests/preachers. It has been said, the best way to convince someone that xianity is not true is to have them read the bible.
When comparing the order of events in Genesis to reality, the discussion should never go farther than the fact that Genesis unambiguously has plants coming before the Sun, Moon, and stars. There is no recovery from that error.

I was a member of a pentecostal group. So matt's is so true. Moving away from irrationality was painful and it took very long. I read books and watched shit ton of youtube debates on the topic. It was not a one off but rather a series of ideas coming in.
I was an Orthodox Christian. We, people, are not evolved to be rational. We were evolving to survive leopard attacks. Rationality is but an unexpected byproduct of this development. Long (very long, indeed) story short - I can't relate more to what you say than I do.
Probably one of the best callers I’ve ever heard on this show. He did well and tried to use logic and reason. TRIED!
OK, he's not a dumb guy, but he's not nearly as smart as he thinks he is. None of us is all that, except for a very few, but this guy went the poetry route toward a satisfactory interpretation of the "word of god". It's sort of a back door for some: I understand physics (or some other difficult topic), therefore I understand god, but I guess this happens more to mathematicians and computer geeks than to natural scientists.
People bashing the caller, seems to me that he could be quite close to understanding truth and logic if he looks more into debates and researches the opposite side to his viewpoint, he is obviously a logical person clinging on to faith, logic trumps anyone’s faith in time

Cut him a break. Deconversion is often a long and difficult process for those of us who were raised with religion. If anything, he should hang on to his scientist card because if he keeps pursuing science maybe he’ll eventually abandon his faith.

He's talking about "intermittent reinforcement". It's a behavior analysis mechanism that rewards a behavior on a random schedule. It was described by B.F. Skinner (skinner's box), and its use as a way to increase the rate of engaging in a particular behavior.
I have viewed several debates on youtube between Atheist and Christians and have a couple of insights; 1. The so called “Christian Winning Debates” the videos are heavily edited and voiced over, rather than letting the debate happen. 2. On youtube they restrict the Comments for the videos, so that no one could respond. 3. They don’t have you guys on it… You impress me. I love the work you’re doing.

This was a surprisingly insightful caller. One of the better calls I've heard in a while.
I started (as a theist) reading the Bible cover-to-cover every year. After 17 readings, I could no longer "believe" that the Bible was the "word of God". I can no longer justify my (previous) beliefs. Note: Danger...danger! If you are a Christian, DO NOT read the Bible!! Not if you want to remain a Christian!😄
If your gawd is perfect and eternal and has a perfect eternal plan for the world and even one just for YOU, then how could that gawd EVER change that plan for one sycophantic acolyte? that's a reasonable question, kim. the answer would be "because it's gawd. gawd can do anything it wants anytime it wants because...gawd." ... the BETTER question is: why WOULD that gawd ever change its plan? that's something i have posed to xtians countless times and have never received a satisfactory answer: If gawd is all the omnis and has a plan and never makes a mistake, etc., wtf are you praying for? are you trying to change gawd's plan because you think gawd doesn't know what it's doing? are you saying gawd is making a mistake and it's up to you to point that out thru prayer? are you trying to sway gawd to show you special favor? WHAT? what exactly is the end game?
The thing is they do NOT think about it. They have accepted it as being fact from childhood and threatened not to even begin thinking about these things. They have also been sold on the con job of faith, and that it is perfectly reasonable, even laudable to take things as being real or having some veracity simply by dint of will and wishing it to be so.
It is also pretty much an emotional and often knee jerk reaction.
It can be difficult to get some people to even look at what they think and why, thinking and logic in general are either poorly taught or not at all. Religions tend to worsen and exacerbate this situation purposely, to establish and maintain the flocks.

I doubt it this guy will ever see the light of reason. Remember Mark/Mike from the Austin stone church who had called like 6-7 times and was very close to seeing the light? His last 2-3 calls he talks about Chris Langan's CTMU theory and how he proved God's existence, but cannot even repeat it. It's only a small number of people who can break free from deades of indoctrination.
One of the most intelligent good faith callers I’ve seen, and I’ve listened to most of these videos to be perfectly honest.
Sad. On every topic, caller concedes he is wrong, yet somehow will persevere forever in his indoctrinated belief.
Ultimately, I think I'm okay with this guy. He engages honestly and patiently with his interlocutors, acknowledges when he doesn't have a good answer, and seems to have a genuine ability to listen. He may come around; he may not. But I have a feeling that in time his curiosity may eventually override his loyalty to ancient doctrines.
Yeah, I'm almost certain he will eventually reason himself out of his beliefs. The fact that he responded to Matt's first three points with "that's a good point" rather than with knee-jerk whataboutisms is a really good sign.

I miss this format of the show because the delay awkwardness from the zoom version is so annoying.
Jehovah revealed himself to Moses and various other people in a small country in the Middle East.
He didn't reveal himself to anybody in any other country.
But other gods DID reveal themselves to people in other countries.

i do respect this caller's intellectual honesty in this convo, it is refreshing to see in comparison to many of the other callers.
This caller is in a position similar to what I was in few years ago when I was a Buddhist and an Undergraduate in Science. I knew science contradicts some parts of Buddhism. But I wanted to be a Buddhist and I tried to justify my believes in a way similar to this caller. There are some amazing sayings in Buddhism that can be related to Modern science.
For an example Buddhism rejects the idea of a beginning and an end to the universe thus rejects the need of a creator. He do an interesting explanation on microscopic and strange looking things living in decaying maaterial. And he described 4 others ways that afffect person's life other than Karma one of which included the inherited bilogical factors.
So I guessed if he knew about all thsoe things 2500 years ago he must have been an enlightened person.
It took me another few years to realize Buddhism has turned in to another religion. It uses the same fear of hell and endless suffering to keep people in the track. And I tried to justify the things in my releion with locial arguments and science untill it was not possible anymore.
Now I follow Buddhism just only as a part of my culture. Not as a religion at all.
It's easy to make generalizations fit, but very hard to make specifics fit.

Most "devout" Christians are going to look at anything an Atheist says with a certain level of suspicion, and probably be questioning their motives the entire conversation.
That's why alot of the Theist callers twist themselves into knots to avoid being "trapped" by an argument.
But, this particular caller was more open-minded and seemingly more rational than most.
It's actually quite refreshing to hear a debate where they remain cordial and respectful the whole time. 👍😇

A loving god wouldn't have created cancer either. But babies die from it all the time. There is no justification for this that will convince me that a loving god exists. And since xians think their god is all loving, that makes their god either an evil monster or non existent. Based on the evidence I will go with the latter.

I've just recently started digging into astro physics, not in school just in my free time... anyway, i was an atheist before that, but now, every day that I learn more about science I become more of an atheist. It convinces me so much more there is NO GOD

This is one of the most honest calls to the show.
Science has disproven religion thousands of times. How many times has religion disproved science? Exactly ZERO.
We know that God designed and manufactured us using the best ingredients available.
And we know God made every effort to ensure we are of the best possible quality.
So why are there so many rejects ?

I don't agree with this caller on anything, including the idea of free will. My studies in neuroscience casts doubt on the existence of free will.
Go and do a search and check it out. Conciousness is pretty fucking complicated and a difficult concept inherently.
Very basically and simplistically, the research and the testing seems to suggest that our brains don't quite work in the way we assume. Our brains come to conclusions and work things out, making decisions BEFORE we are actually aware of them. Throwing a spanner in the works of certainly the common simplistic models of free will.
It appears now that our brains do this in the background, kind of thing. We merely justify and convince ourselves that we thoughtfully decided and acted this out wilfully as a post hoc rationalisation.
The evidence would now suggest this is much more similar to how things are than the simplistic free will model.
Don't however take my word for anything. I'm not overly familiar and could well have an aspect or two wrong.
PS. While you are checking out things about the brain. Look up V.S. Ramachandran. He is absolutely awesome. He has done some fascinating stuff, especially concerning the brain with amputees, split brain patients and perception.

How does his physics degree line up with his beliefs? Are there flat earth physicists as well? Science and religion don't mix. One excludes the other.

There's a nice study on religion and controlling society, when a society got around 1 mill people they started creating religion to keep the people from doing bad stuff. Given we have cameras and better ways to run the law, god is now obsolete.
