Because the new games try to be mainstream horror. Most of the publishers think that the classical (actually scary) survival horror doesn't have solid audience. Meaning, it's not profitable. But that's a blatant lie. Looking forward to The Evil Within, though.

@@lucasmegadeth way late to the game here...but from what I understand this game can be very buggy. I've not played the ps2 version but on ps1 certain rooms can crash the game if you move through them in the wrong order (notably the room with the cages on Carnby's playthrough where you have to turn the devices on in order to overload the door lock, happened to my brother a long time ago and we were both pissed about it). If this is still an issue for you, I'd recommend looking up bug reports for the ps2 version as I'm sure there may be some. Hopefully you got this resolved by now though!

This game needs an Extreme Remake!! Something like they did with RE: REmake but much much better. This game had and extreme potencial and a nice remake will do amazing! :)
This game needs a complete reboot that actual tells the original storry correctly as it was intended by the developers at first. This BS storytelling of the game has references in it to things that were cut out already. But they didn't check on that. They even left one cutscene in it that still has the old design from the early trailers (Ailin in coffin). This was actually the build up to something bigger (Chapel, sacrafice) But it all got deleted in the last minute and they replaced it with that whole abkanis-gods-legend bullshit that doesn't even make sense on its own. But the traces are still there. Ruined the whole game.
Ahhh I remember how creepy the intro montage and main menu were! My sister and I never could get past the first ten minutes of gameplay for both characters, too scary for us as kids. It's nice to finally see how both stories play out, especially Aline's. Thank you! 🙂
@@eool123 I guess it's pretty conclusive between the scene where Alan punches him out (right after Aline lost her jacket to him, in the cellar thru the small window) and when Aline found him in the fort. He is already complaining there that he is not feeling well and feels darkness coming to his brain/bones something. So I guess Alan injected him with the crystalline stuff already and put him in the fort prison cell to transform. Just took a while.
@Superlokkus5 I would assume that Obed's dramatic speech is just nerd speak, because if Alan did something to Obed, then Alan wouldn't be too shocked to speak the moment he was confronted with shadow Obed.
I didn't even know any Western languages as a kid, so my dad explained things that he thought were worth explaining. (We had the French version for PS1 back then.) Reliving these moments with an adult mind is way more fun. ♥

Despite tens of faults, this game is actually worth notice in the grand scheme of horror games just because of the visuals, not to mention several "scariest moments in games" could benefit from Howard Morton crashing through that window. I swear when I fist saw that I jumped six inches out of my chair!

In 2 or 3 scenes during the chase she says to Cornby "what is this monster". Then the next phone call with him shes like "That man can't stop gettin in my way". There were no documents or cutscenes that made that clear to her. Lazy writing like this is spread through out the whole game. Plot holes and contradictions every minute.
I think the new nightmare began when Uwe Boll decided to make a live action movie based on the game. he tried bloodrayne and house of the dead he must have assumed there should be a alone in the dark movie.
I always did like Aline's playthrough better. She goes through a hell of a lot more than Carnby does. Do you know anything about that weird monster in the first few seconds of the cutscene before main title? The one with weird tentacles. I never saw it in the game.

For my surprise, i really enjoyed reading in this game. Well, reading is part of the essence of the first Alone in the Dark games. And being a fan of Resident Evil, this is just another level of reading, than in those games haha.

Graphics were awesome and ambiance is really good and frightening. BUT this game seriously lack of guidance, always wandering where to go, what to do. For example the projector, how the fuck am I supposed to guess that you have to put the Cristal in and then using the flashlight? Ok there is a phone call to explain that but you have to already put the Cristal. Resident evil is much superior for this aspect. And the BIG mistake was the respawn of some monsters when you come back to the same place. It ruined my pleasure. Periodical respawn triggered by specific event can be OK. But systematical respawn? What they were thinking?
lol, the cute dancing snake. Then you leave the bedroom and oh shit, things take a sinister turn. This pc version actually looks fantastic for it's age (and the ps2 port), the ps1 version however is the one that really shows it's age in pexelation and blockiness. Either way this is one of the best horror games I've played, not the clown like prequels I've seen videos of, or the the next gen sequel that should've had a more competent studio working on it. This needs to be remade, people think RE is scary, this is up there with Silent Hill for creepiness.

I only remember some glimpse of this game like the voice alone the dark from the main menu (same as resident evil and same camera angles but still cool and scary)and first scene with the old lady with lot of candles back when i was 9 years old in 2003 it creeped the sh out of me that I don’t remember anything else about this game at all i guess maybe i was so scared to watch or my parents didn’t allow me to watch and never seen or heard again about this game though my dad and we solely owned every playstation and popular games from ps1 until 3 for me newer versions owned only by my brothers so this small piece of memory led me to search up this game I didn’t even know that it’s fourth sequel I found very old 199someting playthroughs glad i found this game now i even thought that it didn’t exist

Awww I did read it but I couldn't see anything relates to the code, And I found out that if you check the Engraved Cube you will find bookcases's order and match them into code. That's what I really figure out
Anyway to change to mapping of the controls? Never could play this game long due to that. Great graphics for the time I think, reinstalled it and tried to give it another go. Controls killed it for me again.
Why ? It isn't that hard. Don't spend ammo killing everything early on, just flee some encounters to save ammo and it won't be an issue by the time you get to disc 2 sections (Church, Lab, Swamp, Fort, Crypt ...). As for riddles, juste be thorough in your search of the rooms and the riddles should be too hard to solve once you think on what you have found. As for the last section of the game, after you went through the gate - use the laser gun. Don't hesitate abusing it considering you find tons of crystal to refill it. Don't use the laser rifle, which is useless. As for boss fights, just look for the way to defeat them - aside from the early ones, the solution rarely is to just keep shooting them.

how did you do that the game looks much better in 1080p what mods did you use to enhance the backgrounds...and also the sound i know the pc version use midi music files...did you replace the midi file with the psone files?
Gathered from the description. 1) This is the default PC version, 3D objects rendered at 1440x1080, while the background is at usual 640x480. 2) The footage was captured while having ambiance/music muted. Those were added manually in post production. 3) PS1 also had MIDI files, but they had proper samples. PC GoG version has free soundtrack included or you can download a remastered version directly from Low Distortion Unit's website.

PS2 version does. For some reasons. It's one of those cases when the last port has the best graphics, despite the fact that PC could handle a far advanced graphics than any consoles ever.
You get the mould from it even if it says that it's chained after. You can't remove the chains or do anything else with it. It's just confusing description.

AITD is actually a very long-running survival horror series. I think the first game came out back in the days of floppy discs. Problem is, although Carnby is the main protagonist, in every installment they change his appearance, his past, and persona. He may or may not have literal superpowers... They also only seem to introduce new installments like every 10 freakin' years. The New Nightmare was great (and pretty underrated) cuz it was right up there with games like RE and SH. They even did the 'choose which character scenario' thing like RE2, which meant double the fun. They actually came out with another AITD on ps3 or ps4 I think - it completely bombed but I actually found it quite entertaining. They kept Carnby pretty similar to this design but the story involved a city being attacked by vampires or some shit. It was more random action scenes like it was trying to emulate a blockbuster film, rather than a survival horror game...FAR less tense than this one, but still kinda creepy atmosphere and entertaining enough. try watching a run through. They also actually made a movie out of this series - no shit. Of all video games they did AITD, starring Christian Slater. It also BOMBED big time, and yeah it really was crap. At least I was glad they recognized the series enough to do a movie... although I doubt hardly anyone recognized the movie as being from a game, tbh. Because AITD owes its various story lines to dark magic and occult crap, that means they really can do anything they want... I prefer this Carnby design a LOT better than the fat sack of crap from earlier games; making it a series where Carnby goes on X-Files-type adventures to different areas and embarking on a RE-type puzzle-solving scenario, on an isolated, dark, stormy site like here, would be EXCELLENT. For all i care they could keep the old-style graphics. More games like this would be like discovering some long-lost entries in a series that puts out its games far too far apart.

Totally agree with you. Those are the only problems I have with this game. The rest is amazing, even the graphics looks good today.

The PS1 game didn't give me Flashlight as an Object for Carnby. I had to rely on other YT videos to get the code in the Church. Good Aline playthrough
I do have an old PS1 walkthrough for Carnby as well. You might've missed it in your inventory, but the puzzles do not differ between the platforms.

I only remember some glimpse of this game like the voice alone the dark from the main menu (same as resident evil and same camera angles but still cool and scary)and first scene with the old lady with lot of candles back when i was 9 years old in 2003 it creeped the sh out of me that I don’t remember anything else about this game at all i guess maybe i was so scared to watch or my parents didn’t allow me to watch and never seen or heard again about this game though my dad and we solely owned every playstation and popular games from ps1 until 3 for me newer versions owned only by my brothers so this small piece of memory led me to search up this game I didn’t even know that it’s fourth sequel I found very old 199someting playthroughs glad i found this game now i even thought that it didn’t exist

Anyway to change to mapping of the controls? Never could play this game long due to that. Great graphics for the time I think, reinstalled it and tried to give it another go. Controls killed it for me again.
This is a hard game to finish. I was never able beat it.
Why ? It isn't that hard. Don't spend ammo killing everything early on, just flee some encounters to save ammo and it won't be an issue by the time you get to disc 2 sections (Church, Lab, Swamp, Fort, Crypt ...).
As for riddles, juste be thorough in your search of the rooms and the riddles should be too hard to solve once you think on what you have found.
As for the last section of the game, after you went through the gate - use the laser gun. Don't hesitate abusing it considering you find tons of crystal to refill it. Don't use the laser rifle, which is useless.
As for boss fights, just look for the way to defeat them - aside from the early ones, the solution rarely is to just keep shooting them.
I don't know how I managed to beat this game! Still a mystery! 🤔

how did you do that the game looks much better in 1080p what mods did you use to enhance the backgrounds...and also the sound i know the pc version use midi music files...did you replace the midi file with the psone files?
Gathered from the description.
1) This is the default PC version, 3D objects rendered at 1440x1080, while the background is at usual 640x480.
2) The footage was captured while having ambiance/music muted. Those were added manually in post production.
3) PS1 also had MIDI files, but they had proper samples. PC GoG version has free soundtrack included or you can download a remastered version directly from Low Distortion Unit's website.

Yeah, this game has a few broken item pickup boxes. Nothing you can do, it's an original bug that never got fixed.

Not exactly. This game by itself is a reboot. Then there's Alone in the Dark (2008) while has Carnby it is really different.
AITD is actually a very long-running survival horror series. I think the first game came out back in the days of floppy discs.
Problem is, although Carnby is the main protagonist, in every installment they change his appearance, his past, and persona. He may or may not have literal superpowers... They also only seem to introduce new installments like every 10 freakin' years.
The New Nightmare was great (and pretty underrated) cuz it was right up there with games like RE and SH. They even did the 'choose which character scenario' thing like RE2, which meant double the fun.
They actually came out with another AITD on ps3 or ps4 I think - it completely bombed but I actually found it quite entertaining. They kept Carnby pretty similar to this design but the story involved a city being attacked by vampires or some shit. It was more random action scenes like it was trying to emulate a blockbuster film, rather than a survival horror game...FAR less tense than this one, but still kinda creepy atmosphere and entertaining enough. try watching a run through.
They also actually made a movie out of this series - no shit. Of all video games they did AITD, starring Christian Slater. It also BOMBED big time, and yeah it really was crap. At least I was glad they recognized the series enough to do a movie... although I doubt hardly anyone recognized the movie as being from a game, tbh.
Because AITD owes its various story lines to dark magic and occult crap, that means they really can do anything they want... I prefer this Carnby design a LOT better than the fat sack of crap from earlier games; making it a series where Carnby goes on X-Files-type adventures to different areas and embarking on a RE-type puzzle-solving scenario, on an isolated, dark, stormy site like here, would be EXCELLENT. For all i care they could keep the old-style graphics. More games like this would be like discovering some long-lost entries in a series that puts out its games far too far apart.
