I feel the reason he slips in some funny stuff into a serious topic is because in the military we tend to make dark jokes out of a serious stressful situation. It helps us cope with it. I believe he's a vet himself too. ☺️😎💯

I graduated from Poly High in Long Beach (with Snoop Dogg! ha!) in 1989. Sublime was just about to become a thing. I lived on the L.A./Orange County border. When the riots happened in 92, LA was put under martial law I could leave my house, drive down the street, but could not turn left because of the curfew. I could turn right and go into Orange County because there was no curfew. I remember going up on the roof of my house at night and saw tanks rolling down our main street, heading west from OC. Our Department of Motor Vehicles in Long Beach was burned down one night. (A few years later, a new one was built, further east in Long Beach.) Many buildings around my old high school were torched. I was shocked to call up a friend of mine who was Black, who lived in downtown, and he was bragging about how he was out all night looting. Our friendship sort of declined after that (I hadn't thought of that before right now). At the time, we were told that the best way to handle the mistrust between the "community" and the cops was to have "community organizers" come up with solutions (the first LA riots were in 1965 and we were told they happened again because cops and politicians had devised the "solutions"). We thought it was behind us. Then, 30 years after I suspected that "community organizers" weren't going to have the answers, the Floyd incident occurred and, despite being held elsewhere in the country, caused a whole new round of riots in Long Beach. Now, the police aren't allowed to do anything and the court system's hands are tied. I now live in what was once safe Orange County, 2 miles east of where I lived in 1992. The crime has moved east and looting doesn't require a reason and faces no punishment. Stores are closing around me and theft is rampant (home invasion, retail theft, personal theft, mail theft). And cops do nothing out of fear of reprisal. I live amongst multimillion dollar homes. The most amazing thing to me is to know that there are decision making (voting) adults who haven't heard about this history and didn't learn the lessons from it. Maybe that's just a function of getting older and learning from "experience." My dad once said to me when I was a teenager, "young people think they're so creative--like everything hasn't been done before." Boy was he right. I guess I'm living it because I'm one of the few people from that time period who hasn't moved out of California. Most of my friends are long gone.

Dave is right. in the US, the state has to invite the US Army in because the 10th Amendment reserves plenary police powers to the states within state territory because the threat is not coming from outside the US. Martial Law would take longer to implement than in the UK. The President is Commander and Chief of the US Army, but the US Constitution madidates that the US Army be used solely to neutralize or prevent imminent threats from outside the US borders. The President cannot usurp the powers reserved to the Governors of each state by the US Constitution.

About calling out the national guard or the military; the response time of the units would depend upon where they are and how heavy their weapons, ammunition, armor and the supplies they carry are.
These riots required a heavy response by well armed and supplied troops. You can see the trucks at the end of the clip. Those are heavy trucks and they do not move quickly.
The men weren't ready to reapond. How many weren't even at the base. They were home or on leave. Command cannot just throw in whatever they have on hand, they had to call everyone in and wait for them to respond.
They had to set up the trucks with fuel and all that. Set up the equipment set up the supplies, round up the soldiers, stage the trucks to move out and move them into the area in a coordinated manner.
It took them 4 days to get those heavy troops mobilized and into the areas of Los Angeles where they needed to be. Could it have been quicker? Possibly; but if they had rushed in with a limited number of poorly supplied soldiers and then had it gone sideways for them it would've been very bad.
They would've been worse off than where they were at in the beginning and they would've been worse off than if they'd done nothing at all. They had to wait until they could round up and mobilize enough of their strength to where they were confident that it wasn't going to go sideways. You know, it took 4 days.

You can't use the military against civilians in the US. That has to be handled by the police or National/State Guard. That's why every state has its own state level military force that is commanded by the Governor. Each Governor is essentially the "President" of his state. POTUS commands national level troops that can only be used in foreign wars/invasion. Governors command state level troops that can be used either as police units, disaster assistance, or they can be called up to serve at the federal level and be deployed in wars.
You also have to realize who you're dealing with in the US. The civilian populace is just as well armed, or better armed, than infantry ground troops except for things like mortars, rockets, explosives, and the ability to call in air support. If you start sending in armed ground combat troops and engaging people then that's going to be a green light for everyone with a rifle to start shooting back. It won't be pretty.

South Korean men are required to serve for 2 years in the military to maintain its force as one of the most powerful in the world. It's much harder to declare marital law in the US than the UK.
Remember, on of the big incidents that eventually lead to USA rebelling against England in the 1700's was the British armies mishandling of protests against the crowns exorbitant taxation policies. British troops firing on protrstors in what became the Boston Massacre and the subsequent declaring of martial law in the city of Boston afterwards fed American discontent and where among the first sparks if what would ignite the revolutoon.
Because of this the right to protest in the US is protected much more stringent manner. Even in the face of violent protests the State level and federal governments have their there hands tied in ways their British counterparts do not. At the state kevel , the governor has to declare a stat of emergency before he can call in the national guard(which are the well regulated militia of the 2nd amendment of the Constitution ) these are part time soldiers not active duty.
For the federal government to get involved requires a Executive order from the President, temporarily suspending the Posse Comitatus act(the law that prevents the active US military from operating missions within the United States ) this order has to be very specific in its goals and for a set limited time. This type of order has only been issued a few times, during the US Civil War,. For a few months after the September 11th attacks(allowing American troops guard important civilian infrastructure like the NYC subway, the shippingnpors, US airports and train stations) and In New Orleans to assist the a national guard and state and local emergency services after Hurricane Katrina to perform rescue operations especially with helicopters and boats.
The handling of protests is alongside the handling of free speech and freedom of the press(the US government cannot stop news outlets from reporting a story like the British one can by issuing a black notice) two of the major differences between The US and UK particularly
with how the government feels with protests and dissent.

I was team lead/manager at a very large retailer in the US during George Floyd riots and they started to loot us and when I heard the commotion on the radio I came out the back bathroom and ran up front to find my boss walking off calling the cops and all my guys running off like he told them to and my stupid pissed off self let my lizard brain take over and I just ran at them yelling every curse word in the book to scare them off and it actually worked and they dropped most of the stuff but there were already 13 of them inside when I came out so a couple got some stuff and some stuff that was dropped like laptops and tablets were broken by the impact. The only one to stand up to me was a girl because I guess she knew I wasn't going to throw the first punch but after few seconds she ran too and then I shut one of the doors they busted through as my boss was still afk, I then made sure no one else was inside or easily able to come inside.
Once the cops got there they found a purse and at least one wallet and basically got like 3 people immediately in the same area and then used the IDs and purse to identify like at least 2-3 more plus someone lost a shoe somehow while busting through the door creating broken glass which I'm fairly sure felt real good on their foot because I think there was a bit of blood somewhere around there too so that was cool assuming I remember correctly. I was lucky though cause even though I had my benchmade knife on me (high end military style/issue, I just like the quality and its legal in my state) and my gun in my truck I still would've been dead if enough of them jumped me because obviously I wasn't running at them with the knife or anything its just something I always have on me. I did almost grab a broom handle though but I figured that would immediately get me fired and start a fight I probably wouldn't win especially if any of them had any weapons of any sort.
Anyway point is yeah I agree with everything y'all said, I don't know anyone that agrees with what happened to George Floyd but those riots weren't the answer and I'd say made more people have a tendency towards at least some racism or stereotyping than if nothing had happened but regardless the crazy thing was that the only one of my guys that was up there with me (he was actually outside still and I had unknowingly locked him out once I ran all the looters out, my bad man) was black and he was just as pissed as me at the 13 looters (and me for locking him out with them lmao) all 13 of which were also black so its like y'all said definitely protest but don't use someone's death or mistreatment as an excuse to do immoral things, I couldn't care less if you break the law but riots and looting are only going to worsen whateven cause you're supposedly doing it for

Ash is right. The governor of California at the time should have ordered the National Guard to step in immediately and take control of the city, which he has power to do. (The Guard has battalions just about everywhere in California, likely several in LA.) He also should have immediately called the president to ask for the US military to step in as well, as there are several bases not far from LA. Don’t understand why he waited so long. Wait, it was Pete Wilson who was governor at the time, loser, explains it all. The police officers should have been convicted. But OJ should have been convicted - it all depends on your jury pool. After the riots, Rodney King said, “Can’t we all get along?,” but then went on to commit more crimes. I don’t get the looting either. There’s never justification for that, and they only hurt the neighborhoods they live in, and cause injury or death to innocent bystanders who usually are on their side.

I met a guy that was in his younger teens here at the time. He said most of the looting was at stores that were price gauging and under cutting pay for staff. The undercutting of staff was because they were paying under minimum wage because there wasn’t enough jobs.

Not the whole story. Protest was also in retaliation for the little girl Latasha Harlan getting shot in the back of the head by a Korean store owner in South Los Angeles a year before. The woman thought she was stealing Orange juice because she (allegedly) forgot she put it in her bag and even though the girl who was angry threw the money on the counter got into a scuffle with the woman and ran out of the store she was shot in the back of the head. obviously they had camera footage that showed what happened, the woman got a small fine and community service and let go. That's why they targeted the Korean stores.

    • @nullakjg767
      @nullakjg767 Місяць тому +1

That would only explain why they would target 1 korean store.... the fact they destroyed every single one they could find was just pure racism. It was more like a small scale ethnic cleansing.
