Remember, the 2nd largest Air Force in the world is the US Navy. “Navy” sounds like it should just be stuff in the water. But ours have ground troops (okay, technically the marines are “from the water TO the ground”, but they’re AT LEAST as good at doing the army’s job as the army is, they just do other stuff to. And there’s are fewer of them. Usually, you send the marines to take a place, and then the marines hand it off to the army to hold it. Marines are big fans of speed and aggression, and the army likes saturation bombing), actual boats and ships, and the world’s #2 Air Force. And Navy pilots can do all the stuff Air Force pilots can do, but there are fewer of them, and their runways are shorter. The Air Force keeps their nukes in underground silos, while the Navy keeps theirs in subs, that can launch from pretty much anywhere. I think the only thing the Air Force has that the navy doesn’t is bombers. Navy planes are only the small ones, which DO carry bombs, but not a lot of them.
Oh, and pretty much all navy types go to danger. The Air Force nuke people are all in the American mid-west, 1000 miles from any oceans, and much farther from actual enemies. And the plane people… an air base might have a hundred combat planes with pilots and sometimes copilots. Then there are thousands of people who work to support those planes… mechanics, quartermasters, doctors, etc. most of them go nowhere near combat.
My dad served in the Air Force during the Vietnam war. The whole thing, because he volunteered for the Air Force before they even started drafting people. He says that every once in a long while, some VC would make it through the jungle to the very opposite end of the runway. They’d take these impossible shots and just hope eventually they’d hit anybody. All the airmen would notice was a “ding” as something hit the side of the hangar. He was just a mechanic.
Naval airplane mechanics are still on ships that go right up to dangerous places, and everyone on that ship is in harm’s way. So… technically the same job, but a MUCH different mindset.

@@Wardr0p - While I don’t doubt that, I didn’t realize the Dept of the Navy tracked marine assets separately from navy assets. I knew there were marine pilots, and I assumed there were marine planes for them, but I just assumed that was still treated as DoN assets. Sort of the reverse of corpsmen. I’m an Air Force brat, so everything I heard my dad talk about was just Air Force assets. Plus people from all branches hopping on USAF flights around the world for super cheap vacations. (My first trip to Europe was in elementary school, on one of those mid-air refueling planes. Sadly, they didn’t refuel anybody on that leg. They said they’d let me sit and watch, if they did. It’s like a weird upside-down cockpit in the tail, but looking downwards. Instead of chairs, they had then beds, so the boom operator could lay on their belly and look down at the plane being refueled. Honestly, that would have been the high point of the trip. Way cooler than Buckingham Palace or Big Ben.)

At the time (if i recall correctly) the Soviet Union was backing Iran in the Gulf War. Iran may have thought that the US would fear the mighty Soviet navy enough to pull out rather than risk a confrontation.

I was on the USS Bagley which was part of SAG "C" in company with the USS Simpson and the USS Wainwright during Operation Praying Mantis..
Was there in the beginning July to January 87-88. USS Knox. Operation Archer.
My Dad was on Wainright I served years later on FFG the Carr years later obviously and I'm From Maine down the road from BIW this story hits home for me 😂

@@user-rm4ez8pb6x Yes, the EA-6B Prowler electronic warfare aircraft. It could carry AGM-88 HARM (high-speed anti radiation missiles) but no bombs. Pilot sat in left front. ECMO-1 in right front and he ran the radar, nav and comms. ECMO-2 and ECMO-3 in the 2 rear seats ran the electronic jamming. ECMO-1 was always the highest ranking and was the commander of the aircraft.

This is called ionospheric propagation, skywave propagation or skip for short. An example of this is shortwave radio which allows you to listen to radio stations on the other side of the world and it dates back to the 1920s.

In 1980 I was a freshman in high school watching this play out on the news and it was very nerve-wrackiing. Because, at this time, Iran's Leadership wanted to prove they were showing that the American Bully was weak and easy to stand up to. It didn't help that my dad was in the USAF and the base we were at were running alert combat and deployment drills during this time, in the event World War 3 broke out. My dad could not leave the house and had to be ready to go in the event the alert claxons went off on base.

i would lose my mind trying to sleep with that thing on my head. I can't even do VR, since I hate wearing things on my face so much. I stopped buying sunglasses because I realized that I was spending $200-$250 on something that I would wear two or three times, and then forget about.
They definitely had comms on the Iranian side. Amateur radio with a powerful enough antenna and good equipment can hit anywhere in the world. 100-200 miles is nothing for communications in 1988.

I never get tired of this story, but USS O'Bannon is my favorite video by The Fat Electrician.
It's older, but it is the best three minutes on UA-cam that doesn't involve cats.
This was in 1988, and while there was a (pucker factor) there was also excitement, we were trained, primed, and ready to go. A lot of these sailors were ready to test their mettle in combat, especially the gunners mates. From my vantage point as port lookout l could see them jacking 3 foot shells and slapping each other on the ball and pointing at 3 Russian ships while they were getting supplies. Luckily the Captain was like no, no, thats not what we are here for.

Radio frequencies have an interesting property; for any given power level, the lower the frequency, the further the signal will travel AND the more directional it becomes. Different "frequency bands" were defined based on the general properties and range. Advanced militaries (like the US) use MULTIPLE radio systems, each tuned to different "bands", to cover all the bases and remain in as much contact as possible.

Drachinifel's treatment of the story in his "Samar Island, odds? what are those?" Is absolutely hilarious.
One slight correction to the description - at about 21:40 in this video there is mention of the location of bombardier...in an A6 the configuration of the pilot (port) and weapons officer (starboard) is side-by-side, not front and back.

UHF Radio aka Ultra High Frequency Radio actually Bounces the Radio signal off the Stratosphere. If the conditions are absolutely perfect you can bounce a UHF signal around the whole of the world (it would be a very crappy signal but it can be done)
UHF Radio is the most common radio for long range communications. It is used by every Military (All Branches) every airport, commercial aviation, commercial shipping. Satellite phones and radios are the second best for long range communications, they were I think satellite communications has taken the number 1 spot at least for the US Military as a whole.

As for Irans decisions at the time - they were well aware that Irak was waging a proxi war against them on behalf of the USA - the 8 years of the (true) first Gulf War pretty much cemented the resentment towards the USA in the middle east. And perhaps facilitated things happening after...

1. There are electricians in the navy. There are also pilots, cooks, mechanics, programmers, machinists, gunners and many other professions in the navy.
2. Just because I would be classified as a technical specialist, information technology guy, PC tech, etc in the civilian world, based on my civilian career, if I made a video about flying an aircraft, am I supposed to automatically adopt the name of say, "the middle aged pilot" otherwise I can't talk about piloting? So, anyone who makes a video about hiking on their fishing channel is discarded because hiking isn't fishing?

Ships have been communicating with other ships and land bases over hundreds of miles for decades at this point. The most distant *point* in Syria (outside this operating area) to the corresponding most distant *point* in Kuwait is only 1430 kilometers. The Persian Gul is under 940 kilometers in one direction, 370 kilometers in the cross section, Iran has a shoreline across almost one half this gulf, Kuwait and Iraq are at one end, the opening to the ocean is at the far side. Nearest base is unlikely to be more than 300 km. Radio works over that distance. the furthest point in Syria could communicate with the furthest point in Kuwait by radio if they wanted (less than 0.02 second delay) by old 1950s era civilian AM/FM radio. In WWII radios were used to request supply drops from bases many hundreds of kilometers away. The Iranian Navy Command could talk to their ships in basically real time. (I lived over 2,000 kilometers from New York as a kid, and we would have broadcasts from New York reach us in seconds. Not sure if satellite relays were used at the time in the late 1970s (I was young) but if civilian broadcasts could make it that far in a few seconds, I guarantee you military communications took priority, so the could talk to a ship 8+ years later that's just a few hundred kilometers from the nearest base.

“What sort of distances” even during WW1 everyone had radios that could bounce signals off the ionosphere… civilians in the USA could receive random chatter from the opposite side of the planet. It’s safe to assume Iranian Navy had better radios than civilians decades ago. US ship and Iranian ship were able to radio each other from over 15 miles (24+km) away, at least. So somewhere between 15 miles/all across globe is everyone’s radio range.
The Samuel B. Roberts had a very famous namesake. Look up what the original Sammy B. did at the Battle off Samar, back in WWII.

Yeah the Houthy's launching missiles at ships making that major trade route unsafe and then at the same time the Panama Canal has been in drought for longer than normal last year or two and the effect its has had on the lake that feeds the locks is low so its making a lot of issues there slowing passage through that major trade route.

My grandpa had a cb base station and I believe it was a 1000 watt amp and on a clear day he said he could reach Australia, so on open water with no obstructions a cb type radio would easily reach wherever you wanted, I'm pretty sure even civilian ships and boats back then had ship to shore radios
I was deployed to the gulf the summer of 88. Our mission was to escort Kuwaiti tankers with US flags up and down the gulf. Was crazy during sand storms. The gulf gets rough. Being a QM I was on the bridge often. The best place to be in my opinion.

The U.S. already had a bad relationship with Iran by this time. In November 1979 seized 66 U.S. citizens in Tehrān and held 52 of them hostage for more than a year. This crisis took place in the wake of Iranian Revolution (1978-79).
