This is where it's at! Making old tools like Fairchild-style compressors better with modern mixing in mind. And the owner of Gainlab is a super nice dude. I emailed with him about his gear a year ago. He was incredibly helpful. I didn't buy anything (yet), but he took the time to answer my questions regardless. One of the best companies in the business right now.
Gainlab Audio never disappoint. Every unit you've showcased of theirs was absolutely stunning.
I wasn't impressed until I heard that last example on that awesome Acoustic Ballad. Then I was like "Ohhhhh!"
Thanks for pointing out the ballad. As David mentioned, the instrumentation and vocal became more whole.
Finally! :D I watched videos from other people and felt meh about it until now. You are the only one actually showing these machines correctly. Thank you boss!
That Ballad Sounded amazing with the Dictator.
Bro! Not to beat the dead horse here, but your totally right. That is an extremely smooth compressor (even over youtube)! I definitely see where you are getting "velvet". I keep wanting to say "butter". 😂 We silly audio nerds and our descriptive words! 🤓
Beautiful compressor and great video as always!
Sounds so good! And I love the new style of videos, right on David!
Your videos get better and better and this one sounds amazing!
Low comp mode shocked me, wow. Thank you for the awesome video as always!
I was waiting for you to review this one. I KNEW it was gonna happen at some point. Gainlab rocks for sure
Gainlab audio insides (I've seen you posted a picture) look probably even better than the outside. Their work is impressive
Ordering one asap… I was about to buy an cl1 tube tech but, with this test I got amazed how good this thing sounds like 👍🙏🏼 blessings
Great review ... I have had this unit in both my mixing & mastering setups for a few years now, pretty much using the Dictator as you demonstrated .. haha the secret is out ... smooth
I love how you mentioned the Dynamite when you needed to give an example of snappy attack, the unit is absolutely one of my fav for badass snares and the Softube plugin is pretty good too
Oh yeah the plugin is scary close actually. We have two of those and to be honest, it becomes harder and harder to get them to be quiet or match lol, Softube version is pretty spot on
that bass guitar - dang! yeah.
Yes, exactly. Thinking all tube compressors sound the same is like thinking all male vocalists sound the same. They. Do. Not. Topologies, components, and designs differ and the results differ as well. In some very cool ways. Another great video, grazie.
That reggae song is 🔥. Is it available somewhere? I have no clues about artist and song...Thanks.
Doesn't sound bad at all 💯
I already bought the heritage symph eq, and it's wonderful. I also, but the Eve's 3070 which is another golden one. Now buying this one 🙂Your channel has really helped me narrow equipment for my mastering chain. cheers
Happy to help!
@@mixbustv I just got the Gainlab Dictator, and you are spot on. This thing just adds magic on a master!
Wow I loved it on the full mixes. David, would you use it on 2bus or mastering?
Absolutely yes
Very interesting unit. The excitation of the mids and box tone is very euphonic and just sounds great. Its “warm”, certainly. Smooth is the best adjective, it really plays to its strengths. It is a very slow compressor, even at the fastest setting in hi comp mode. For context, even the Manley Vari Mu is faster (with its fastest release being 200ms). So this is a gooey, smooth leveling type unit. Dont expect pumping. Very RS124 esque in this sense; the closest thing I could compare it to would be the retro revolver, which is also faster. I find that it shines on tracks as a thickener, but can also work well on the master buss depending on the mix, but probably not as the only compressor (although this is true for most vari mus). In short, buttery warm slow and smooth
nice advertisement! nothing against it
Hey David have you tried the Cranbourne Audio Carnaby HE2? Looks sweet!
Looks great! Haven't tried it
Have you ever had the opportunity to use an IGS Tubecore? How does this compare soundwise? Im lucky enough to have a Tubecore and just picked up a used Dictator at a great price. Cant wait! Thanks for video as always!
Briefly, it's a good compressor, but I don't have fresh memory of it. The dictator is spectacular
Brilliant! Thank you so much!! At your opinion : why did they not add any negativ output?
Probably would have required a much bigger switch, so both space and cost (for the public)
Probably it would require a (much) bigger switch, so space and cost (for the public)
@@mixbustv You are right!
David, thanks for the great demo. I'm actually looking for a compressor for my cello. I'm currently using the HA Tubessessor, but it sometimes disappoints in terms of smoothness. I want something that is basically invisible from a GR point of view and I can hear the Tubesessor doing its thing even at 3-5db of GR, which really reduces its usefulness.
Inishmore they had the Dictator at Acess Analog, but alas...any idea whether it's what I'm looking for, or am I just chasing a unicorn?
Thanks for all your work
Not at all. The one you have is quite murky and I'd say far from what you are looking for (unlike the CL1B which would be ok color wise but too grabby for what you want). Dictator would definitely be a top contender. Wes Rhea too, the first being more velvety and a tad darker but so smooth. Rhea is also smooth but brighter and with the THD option. But low comp on the Dictator on cello would be glorious
@mixbustv thanks for the reply... i guess the Dictator wasn't around when I bought the Tubesessor and the CL-1b was impossible to get...
I'll have a look into acquiring one. There's no doubt in my mind that analogue is the only way to go with this one, I've tried all the software compressors I could think of and none came close.
Thanks for the work you do
🔥
Great video & examples David, Your getting the blame with the wife for making me spend more money:)
😁
It sounds great but I'm wondering why there's no output trim if the usecase also should be to drive the input and use it as saturator.
Because it's not its primary use. The saturation is linked to the compression, this is not uncommon even for non-tube units lol the Fatso. Although I would like to have a trim out it probably requires another stage in the circuit
Hey man! I just seen something and thought of you. Im sure you have heard if it but I wanted to mention just in case. The Antelope Galaxy 32/64 interface. They are expensive, Im sure you would have to rewire some and I know you are a big MOTU fan (for good reason). But the 64 analog I/O would take care of 4 of your 16A's. Plus it has MADI, DANTE ADAT, HDX..etc. Anyways like I said, Im sure your very aware of it. But I wanted to make sure you knew, cuz damn!😂 Thanks for the video man!
Thank you 👍 yes I was aware of it, and it's a great interface. But besides everything, I kinda like to have the modular system, you know, just in case something stops working and you don't have the entire studio shut down 😅
Oh yeah. Good point man. I would have to agree.
Great compressor! A question David (I know it doesn't match the topic of the video but I'm very curious): how can you use a limiter in mastering without squashing your drum transients? I know it's a pretty vast topic but I'd like to know at least something about it 🙃
You can't. Meaning, that's what limiting does. What you should do is you get to mastering with a mix that doesn't NEED much limiting to be loud (that doesn't mean you limit the mix on the 2bus lol because that would be exactly the same). It's all about crest factor and I have dozens of videos about that.
@@mixbustv fair. I’ll watch your videos on the crest factor 👍
Would like to see a good comparison with the new Heritage Audio Grandchild... It seems a wiser choice to go with this one, but want to know for sure
There's little to know. Dictator is far superior, not only for the massive difference in headroom but also for stepped controls, number of controls, unlink option, low comp mode and just look at the guts of both. Stuffing 4 tubes in a 500 series probably means low voltage (surely does because the format cannot provide more) and heat at that point definitely becomes an issue. Also I only had ONE unit fail multiple times before and that was their Successor (sold because of that) and their specially designed xformers are quite dark and murky. Their big 670 sounds nothing like the 670.. so..
@@mixbustv Ah good to know... had heard this about heritage but knew you used their stuff, but you had those issues I heard of... I was on this side of the fence but just didn't know for sure... maybe they did well... but clearly for the same price it's not a good option.
Only thing I am looking at from them are the new interfaces but not becuase of the preamp, just VST support in the DSP so I can be creative with a microphone when creating my own things... something that is a hobby while mixing to keep me inspired... maybe they can save their name at some point... This helps this decision be solid.
Long time for you to take on this unit... thought maybe you didn't like it or something... seeing as you had the EQ for so long
Damn! This video is not helpful for gear lust.
