What a great review! No fluff at all, just forthright and eloquent, full of information and a pleasure to watch. I have just started doing research toward the purchase of my first ever studio-ish grade monitors for use at home, where the smaller the monitor, as long as it is still true and useful for mixing, the better. I only recently thought to look up IK Multimedia, 'cause my son has amp with masses of effects from them that seems really cool. I think it was IK, anyway. I would not have thought that something so small could produce flattish bass down to such low frequencies. It's hard to believe, but just in the last two days of searching for info about small monitors, I ran into a lot of posts praising the original MTMs. It sounds as if the new MKII generation would be worth saving up for for a person with a small home office cum home recording studio. If I were to go that route. I'll have to see if there's a shop in my vicinity where I could listen to a pair myself. Thank you for this review. It is informative, helpful and inspiring. I'll stop gushing now. Hey, great review, man!
I sold my old ones as the Port was very overloaded with bass. And the speaker was cramping because of that….. it was still a good speaker but my Genelecs are simply way better fitting my ears personally. Maybe one day will audition the MKII as that would be nice! Thanks for the awesome vid David. Cheers
Got them few weeks ago and I am remixing all of my music. Incredible detail and translation including bass in tiny enclosures. Love them combined with Neumann NDH20 for headphone mix. Thanks David for your great educational videos!
Good evening @ David, I came on here to to acknowledge all the information you give to the community. I don't know if you remember that we had a small conversation many years ago. Anyway, I just wanted to say (THANK) YOU!
Thanks so much for this! You are the only person I've seen who actually used the original ones. It was kind of shooting in the dark via other reviewers. I think I've found my budget Atmos setup speakers
@@TigroGumi Yeah, it'a all hot air, mate. I'm sure they are really nnice speakers, but when a reviewer starts spouting stuff like 'massive improvement' , it's clearly an exaggeration, as it would either mean the originals weren't actually that good (which is kinda weird) or the new model is reinventing the wheel. I don't believe either case to be true, so I smell bullshit.
I have the immersive bundle of MK1s (in a controlled env with room correction) and I'm more than satisfied. I also have ARC Studio in my B room. Both amazing sets of product. I don't think I'd gain anything with these new MK2s to be honest.
Picked up some Mk1's in white for £336 a pair. After watching this video, the Mk2s genuinely look amazing though for sure are in a different price bracket retailing at £750+. I think I'm happy with my purchase considering the big discount I've gotten
Love the video! With your experience with them, would you mind giving a bit of an advice? I want to convert my home studio (small room) from Stereo to 5.1 (not just for music). I have a pair of Mackies MR5 MKII on speaker stands on the sides of the computer screens. Do you think if I replace the 2 mackies to a 5.1 setup of IK MTM MKII would be an improvement, if not using as super near field (and using as a traditional 5.1 positioning on stands on a small room)? I am in doubt if the MTM will be an improvement overall, or if I will feel they will lack bass and not be as good as mixing monitors as the Mackies, and unfortunatelly Idon't have how to test due to lack of on demand availability.... would really appreciate your thoughts.
I have neumann kh310 monitors, I got the iloud mtm mk2 for extra reference because of the different speaker models just because lol although I probably don't need them because my kh310's make my mixes very transparent but...... Lets me just tell you.. .Holy shit these things surprised the Shit out of me... I wasn't expecting them to sound like this... I can actually say id probably mix on these after the arc setup on them.
I have to the small micro's and love them, I want to upgrade to something with bigger sound and bigger bass, I'm torn between the new Micro Pro and these new MTM MKii, did you had a chance to compre them?
I was told that you shouldn't put monitors on their side. I haven't got much room on my desk and if I had these on their side they would fit under my visual monitors. Do they sound as good on their side?
Guys be aware not to deal w this company, they will not offer any support after warranty, meaning spare parts, schematics or tech support. This is not worth the money even tho the speakers do sound amazing, they are pretty much garbage if they break out of warranty. And remember, not something like a driver stops working but these are dsp, so say the signal generator for the arc stops going up full spectrum, your correction will be off. The speakers left to right will be unbalanced, and your solution from their “tech support” will be “have you tried unplugging it?”
This is what is not mentioned. The fact that withing 5 years the monitor has been improved so much says it sall, just spend more and get a better monitor. I do own these and they are great but if you are being dragged into an Apple upgrade situation it makes no sense in the long run. @David - will you use these yourself? Not sure you will. Sponderships are nice though fpr the channel I understand.
@@richertz ya I have these and the micros, both were unreal for the price at the time and I was really happy until they stopped working lmao. Fresh out of warranty period and IK multimedia was basically like “ah jeeze sucks to suck”
@@richertz left such a bad taste in my mouth I bit the bullet and went right to end game with my Neumanns. I try and comment my story under as many iloud videos and posts as I see to avoid other people being suckered into their bs. And it blows because when they work the speakers sound great lmao.
I totally disagree and had them replace a speaker over a year old no problem. Both them and Sweetwater were on it at the same time.. sorry to hear you have had bad luck with them..
What I don't understand about this design is Why are there 2 woofers the same size? Typically in a 3 speaker system you have woofers with drivers that specialize in a different frequency range. Do both woofers play the same spectrum? I couldn't find any literature specifying this on the IK website.
Not really. You're talking about mains 3 way designs where the bigger driver is the low end, mid driver midrange and tweeter top end. Like my big Eve's. There's plenty of nearfield and midfield designs with same size drivers such as Focal Twins, Eve 307s, Adam A77H and more. The difference is in the crossovers. Only main monitors have the dedicated driver for each range because they have a dedicated amplifier for each driver. Smaller monitors don't work like that and they usually divide the signal with a crossover, sending midrange info to one driver and low end to the other even if they are the same size
So I've actually heard these a few weeks ago at a friend's studio, I was surprised at the low end coming from them. 45hz yeah? Do you think it's worth getting the big brother for mixing? If it has one?
In order to have the sound corrected (ARC), do you need to have the X-monitor running all the time while you listening to the MTM's? Or do the speakers store the corrections so you don't need to have them connected via USB to the PC all time.. ? Thanks
Helo Dave . thanks a lot for your video . i have a question . mayby you can shoot a video about #total recall# in your setup . becuse all we know situations when client after aprooved mix may ask some changes - whats the best way to do it in hybrid setup . and how solve it ? bst rgds from ukraine .
hello and thank you for the video, I have EVE audio SC205 which I use with an IK Multimedia ARC Studio, you think that I would gain something from buying the IK Multimedia iLoud MTM MKII, thank you 'advance
If you switch off the arc do you then get zero latency instead of 2.2ms extra rtl? I wanted to track guitar with as low latency as possible but mix with arc…
Can you please make another video with micro monitor PRO ? Do you think that you can make atmos also with them too ? Mtm is great but my room is very small and micro monitor PRO could be my solution as a reference monitor. Thanks
Statements like "massively improved" always makes me nervous in cases where the previous model was already quite revered; if that really was the case, you'd basically be saying the new model beats pretty much any speaker hands down regardless of class/size/cost - now if only that were true...
No, you are assuming that I'm saying that. I don't "basically say" anything unless I say it. I don't dance around things. As you yourself say the previous model was so revered, any improvement would be a massive achievement, even if in the grand scheme of things, could just be 10%. Right? Right. Don't be nervous, there's nothing to be nervous about. It's a video.
@@mixbustv Just questioning the veracity of a seemingly sweeping statement, that's all. The video doesn't get me nervous of course; however, sinking 1000 bucks into a pair of speakers based on someone saying 'any improvement would be a massive improvement' does. You're absolutely correct - you don't just dance around things - you just say it out loud, regardless of any questionable logic. Right? Right.
IKM is the only company that has no way for installing plugins natively on Apple silicon macs in 2024 and their old plugin manager is an absolute disgrace.
