      Quality > Quantity. Hopefully Matt Owens sees your vids, since i find these to be the hands down most insightfull and thorough vids on one piece. On another note, i think the character design, the look of a character, plays a big role in Oda's villains.

      Would love to see you apply this analysis to Kaido, think he represents a villain who has become the very thing he hates. A wild beast who escaped imprisonment yet is obsessed with subjugation, the oppressed that became the oppressor. Heavily inspired by Japan’s own imperialist/industrialist turn in response to Western imperialism

      Sterling Archer Hody = Killmonger. And yes I agree.
      What Oda is doing right now by explicitly contrasting the Sulong Minks with the Beast Pirates is really interesting thematically too. I haven’t figured out what it means exactly yet. Jack, himself a general of the animal kingdom pirates, gassing and torturing an actual independent animal kingdom might have symbolic significance in regards to the cannibalistic nature of imperialism. Maybe we find out more soon where Oda is going with this.

      @JAMF huh? The incredible attention to detail here is that Lucci disguised himself as a civilian in Water 7 without raising any suspicions for 5 years. Then later turns out it was expressed in his fruit, Neko Neko no mi: Model - Leopard, an animal that is a master at camouflage.
      TBF tho, usually, One Piece fans are not easily impressed if a story/character/dialogues are not masterally crafted... at least not for me. That's why I am a fan of this series because as we've just witnessed here with Mr. Morj's great analyses of the series, I, like the rest of us here are still surprised that even as diehard fans of the series, there are still lots of instances where we missed out on details and information craftily put there by the author in order for us to discover. This connection of Lucci's undercover mission and his devil fruit was just one of the many things that almost always goes under the radar. And pointing it out in the open just sometimes blows everyone's mind. This is the reason why I love One Piece.

    The fact that Blackbeard was fine with passing 40 years of his life being almost no one until he found what he was looking for makes him the most terrifying villain in one piece.
    He didn't chase fame and notoriety. They came for him. It gives him that subtle cosmic protection that Luffy has had throughout the series. A strong candidate for Pirate King.

    • @Nr4747
      @Nr4747 3 роки тому +59

      Black Beard actually comments on this himself several times, that he can essentially always "bet on himself" because "luck", or rather "destiny" seems to always favor him. A great example of this is when he and his crew survive Magellan's attack because his fruit was able to swallow the poison without Black Beard fully absorbing it. Black Beard had no idea that this would happen and that he would survive that way, and he counted his "lucky stars" that it worked.

    I like to think about Wapol being purposefully written as a bad, "forgettable" villain to spark a contrast with the "A man dies when he's forgotten" quote. Maybe that's a stretch but at the very least it's ironic. Drum Island is one of the few arcs when the villain is extremely bad in both power and personality, never a threat even for a split second. He literally got pushed away from the island. While the most memorable character, alongside Chopper and I guess Kureha, is Hirlock, the man who literally died. Everyone fondly remembers him, Chopper, Dalton, Kureha, the inhabitants and every single one of us.

If you did hear it from me, I definitely don't mind it making its way into this video - especially as you've taken the idea way further than I ever realized it (you realized a lot more nuance to Arlong than I did, and I never thought about it as much for the post-EB villains).
    I really love the point that the villains aren't meant to be someone you can agree with or live in a moral gray area. That they're complex but thoroughly despicable is perfect for the kind of story One Piece is. I think this works with the contrast they all have with Luffy show the variety of ways that people can end up falling from who they could have been, because their wills were too weak. Luffy has a strong enough will that he can maintain the simple, innocent morals he does, whereas so many other people were too weak, and end up taking the easy way out. To try to lazily gain power like Moria, to try to force others into his crew like Kaido, to be ashamed of their identity as a pirate like Kuro, to just go along with a philosophy because it lets you kill like Lucci instead of thinking for yourself, et cetera. I see them as people who could have been as great as Luffy if their will was strong enough to not fall for all those forms of weakness.

      I dont think we've ever had a direct text convo about this, but maybe you brought it up in a comment on one of my analysis vids and I dont remember? Idk, but I'll say it's entirely possible you planted the idea at some point and I didn't realize haha
      And Im glad you enjoyed the vid, especially the 2nd half because tbh thats what I like best about OP villains. I dont feel the same satisfaction seeing villains from other series get taken down, even if I can appreciate them for what they are. And I def like your point that so many villains take the "easy way out", and follow a flawed philosophy that justifies their actions

      @@MrMorj Yeah, no way to know for sure and I don't want to steal credit or anything - the credit is definitely yours for really expanding the idea and connecting it to everything else Oda does with villains.
      And yeah seeing villains taken down in OP is so much more satisfying than in basically anything else. OP arc climaxes are amazing and how the villains are written is definitely a big part.

      It's great to see how great ideas and perspectives come into light.
      The topic of the video was 'Bruuuuuhhhh 🔥🔥🔥' moment for me.
      But the video wasn't all .. the ideas and perspectives provided by the comment section even added more to the video.
      I can't type it all... But the comment section gave even more nuances and perspectives that expands the ideas in the video.
      I do want to add another thing here. Some ideas and thoughts come into minds of many people independently. One just can't claim the origin of the thought to themselves. The more abundant the thinkers are the more likely that some thinkers might come up with same idea simultaneously. In One Piece world. .... it is more common to come up with a theory that is already been in circulation.
      Nonetheless... This all is why I love One Piece fandom.
      Be it content creators... Or the commenters .... Or the general fan discussions in the deepest or farthest of places... It's always lively and always so engaging.
      One Piece is truly a living Masterpiece 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

    This is why I don’t find “Luffy doesn’t develop as a character” to be a valid criticism of the story.
    Just because Luffy carries the exact same beliefs, desires, and demeanor from chapter 1 all the way into chapter 1,000 doesn’t mean that he’s not everlastingly complex and interesting in those traits. A good villain can add a tremendous layer of depth to a relatively “simple” character by simply highlighting what they are not.
    It’s one thing to have Luffy say he would do anything for his crew. It’s another to test Luffy’s ability to do anything for his crew in an arc where Spandam, a weak leader who lets his crew do all the heavy lifting, is the main villain.
    Even though Luffy’s character to this day is the relatively the same as in chapter 1, it feels like we find out something new about him almost every arc because of Oda’s excellent villains and his storytelling prowess as a whole.

      Luffy doesn't react, he acts and the world reacts. The world doesn't change Luffy, he changes the world, by the end of the story he will change it literally.
      I think writing a character like this and actually make it work is much more complicated and difficult than it seems.

    • @Cless
      @Cless 3 роки тому

      But you proved yourself that he did not change at all. He gets more complex because of the villains, but it doesn’t answer the question.

    I think when people are comparing villains from different series, they often leave out the authors aim and direction and also the nature of the series out of it. Example Dragon Ball does not have deep villains by any means. Most deep were Vegeta, a bad guy turned good and Zamasu, who liked to flex philosophically.
    But villains in Dragon Ball are perfect as they are for the series like Dragon Ball. Dragon Ball did not need morally gray villains, because Toriyamas goal was never to write story that complex. That is not to say Dragon Ball is bad. I love Dragon Ball. Toriyama just wanted to write a story week by week where you got your adrenaline kicks from that weeks chapter by action and powerscaling.
    That's why a character like Frieza is a great villain for Dragon Ball where for example Stain is great villain for My Hero Academia. They show authors means and goals for the story. I enjoy them both for different reasons.

    These are my favourite videos, thank you for yet another delightful insight on why One Piece is great, this time regarding villains, who are really well written. Even the "bad" ones like Moria, Hody or Foxy have a reason to be how they are, and I think that all of them fit perfectly for what the story needs them to be. I never considered some of the analogies you established, and I thank you for, yet again, sheding a light on something I didn't grasp. I always learn with you. Thank you very much! Its so true we live in an era where most ppl wanna seem big brained and hype up villains who are sympathetic/may have a point cause it makes them think or whatever but we undermine the other ways complexity can be implemented in an antagonist and you described One Piece's brand perfectly. Its cool when sympathetic or agreeable villains are done well but sometimes i just wanna see a dick that's so entertainingly hateable but (masterfully thematically written) get his shit rocked

    I completely agree with your idea of doffy. I was watching a review and a guy was saying he thought doffy was to be a sympathetic type villain due to his backstory. However I didnt see that. When I watched it I realised that doffy was basically just trying to portray why he is the way he is.he isnt sympathetic hes waaay too far gone and is set on his goals which obstructs luffys. And that's that. But idk I guess some people interpret it different due to their reading experience. Eh
