I feel like if it was a different writer, they would have put Ace’s backstory sometime before the the war, before his death, to make us love him more and see how much he means to Luffy. But no, he puts the backstory after Ace’s death with us knowing he’s gone now. Okay I’m sad and depressed now. Sorry this was so long if you made it to the end.
@@anthonyzivalich4962 And seeing Ace's existential crisis come into full flow, he was questioning himself on whether he deserved to even live because of the sins of his father.
Oda made a great decision to not include Ace's backstory before Marineford. I had pretty much 0 reason to believe he will die and if Oda showed his backstory to make us sympathise with him more, I might have been sadder when Ace died but less shocked. But by delaying the backstory and playing with the readers expectations, he made the experience much better. When Luffy uncuffed Ace, there was not a single part of me that even considered the fact that Ace would die. But then, it suddenly happened and I was absolutely baffled to the core. It was so surprising that even after I saw Akainu burning a huge hole through Ace, I refused to believe he would die but alas in the next chapter he died, and Luffy, the character filled to the brim with hope and never ending belief in himself, broke. Then when I saw Luffy in Amazon Lily, for the first time in more than 500 chapters, doubting himself by saying he can't become the pirate king, the emotions started coming up as I remembered the very same Luffy in the past, several times boldly state that he is the man who will become pirate king without a shimmer of a doubt. Then I saw Ace's backstory ending with Sabo's death and Ace saying he won't die. That was the emotional pay off for me.
This arc actually made lot of things clear for me. I was confused about how Powerfull Navy , Yonkos and 7WLs were. It kind of established a power system for me. It was like Saving Rukya arc of bleach .
Calm down sir, this is just an aftershock of the hype trauma inflicted by Oda to remind you that he is the best world-building mangaka. We will get through this together.
One of my favorite things about this arc is how stressed out Sengoku was in the lead up to the war. Usually, for an authority figure, a fight is portrayed as a break from their vital but tedious everyday job stress. For eg. Naruto, once he becomes Hokage, the daily acts of the job are his stress, and fights are a welcome break from that. But for Sengoku, this coming war itself is the stress! From Blackbeard being found at Impel Down to losing contact with his ships that are tracing Whitebeard, everything about it was just stressful for him. Props to Oda for doing that.
I was reading week-to-week when Marineford was being published and man...the excitement was off the charts with every early chapter. The Ace is Roger's son reveal, the reveal of Akainu's power, the reveal of Whitebeard's power and overwhelming strength...it was all so amazing.
One thing that I'd have liked is the death toll at the end. How many pirates perished? How many marines? How many did Whitebeard led to their graves alongside him? Plus, more minor deaths, one or two vice admirals would've been great. PS: Oars Jr. is dead to me until proven otherwise.
@Ridwon Ahmad probably not in the great scheme of things, but it would've been cool nonetheless to know how many did Whitebeard killed all by his own and how many men the marines lost as a result of a war against, as you said, a single yonkou. And yeah, the admirals are fine, I'm talking about vice-admirals and other ranks.
@Ridwon Ahmad The world gvt. isn't that much stronger than an Emperor. If 2 of them ever got together and agreed on a way to split the world into 2, the gvt. wouldn't stand a chance. Of course, there is the 'new weapons that will make the Warlords useless' but we don't know how effective those would be against the true powerhouses of the world. I mean, I doubt anything man made could do any sort of damage whatsoever to Big Mom, Kaido or even Shanks, hell even Luffy is probably past that point by now, soo... You gotta remember, an Emperor isn't going to go to war just by himself. He'll have allies, subordinates, even entire kingdoms backing him up. One of the reason Whitebeard lost so badly was that he couldn't and probably wouldn't bring all of his allies to help him. Can you imagine how many islands/kingdoms he had under his flag-protection. Probably dozens. If even a few of them had a few powerful characters each and thousands strong armies, you can only imagine how much destruction he could cause if he was the one who planned the war and not his enemies. Also, he couldn't even use the full might of his devil fruits because he would just end up killing his own men. A devil fruit that can destroy the world only created like 2 big waves the entire war. Meh...
@@scandalfop2093 the last point regarding Whitebeard is often overlooked. He was severely handicapped (alongside his health problems) and everytime he had to use it his own allies had to stop fighting and stay away from him. Yes, Kaido, Big Mom and Shanks are undoubtly powerful but I've yet to see them fighting and pushing after taking all that damage while being that old and sick.
@@MrMorj It would be interesting to hear your take on the power-ups of that arc as well, I've seen and heard various new readers say that it was forced or an "ass-pulled" and that the straw hats shouldn't have escaped from the Buster Call.
@Andrew Dziminowicz Yes, some seem to be driven by a kind of need to dump on something that is popular just so they can get to say: "this shit is overrated, I don't get the hype". I don't even bother to argue at this point.
Can remember reading Marineford week to week years back and I have to say you last point was spot on. Luffy is known for always being able to get back up, bounce back and do the job he set out to do. The lead up to Marineford was showing that it was getting progressively harder to do that, so when Ace finally dies we see, that Luffy's story is different from what we thought. He was out of his depth, he lost utterly & completely and this was the first time he had to face that. (P.s Zoro had a similar revelation upon being struck down by Mihawk) Because he just couldn't do it.
I once read someone saying that, unlike other protagonists, Luffy really lost faith in himself and that what made post-marineford so heartbreaking was to see this usually goofy, optimistic and joyful character completely broken by grief and self-contempt. Yes, Naruto went through his own process when Jiraiya died but Luffy had it harder imo, starting for the fact that he saw it all.
@@scribalma_h totally get what you mean, I mean Naruto if anything had a lack of faith in himself and was a real underdog. First episode he's king of Ls Whereas luffy has always shown to be taking Ws left right and centre, Luffy while he does have the will power is also extremely lucky.
Interesting comparison. I daresay the comments here are one of the few times I have seen a civil comparison between the two anime. I like both of them so this is a pleasant surprise.
I hate and love at the same time how he basically became that little kid that was lonely and lost without his old brothers in the entire arc... It pained me so much. But it also made me love him *even more* ... The pain, the empathy for him, the wish to help him and the BEAUTIFUL bond of his crew when they were all determined to help him once more, as if they were us, the readers, as if they /knew/ as much as we did.... OMGOSH, definitely best moment for me after that whole awesome arc... couldn't ask for more.
Sometimes I wonder if Oda watches all these analysis videos and thinks to himself that I didn't even actually think this way 😂 just like how the prisoners used to think about Buggy
I literally cannot wrap my head around the fact that Oda went there on accident and then nailed it so hard that One Piece just completely rushed past all these other Mangas. Something like Marineford must be the absolute hardest thing to get right as a storyteller. What a legend.
Excellent analysis. Hype is the perfect word for it. One Piece's greatest strength has been it's commitment to long term storytelling and Marineford was decades of set up finally paying off. All while the story tells you that this grandest moment is only the half way point. Hype.
Yo I was watching the anime yesterday just to go back I still cried lol especially when Lufy asked Jimbe if Ace is really dead and that it's not a dream, that part was Amazing coz that's how I felt when my childhood friend died I could relate to it that's the best thing I ever seen in Shonen ever .
I've been going through all of your videos in the last week and I have decided to stick to your channel for any One Piece related content on YT. I don't dislike the others but I only have so much time and your videos are definitely worth it. The level of insight and structure in your arguments and examples are unparalleled. I'd rather listen to you break down the deeper meanings and themes of OP and analyzing the hell out of it rather than listening to people simply telling me what happened and their biased views of what they expect to happen. I didn't think it was possible to appreciate the beauty of One Piece More than I already did, but you made it happen man. you deserve at least 10 times the subscribers you have. At least.
Just recently finishing up Alabasta again, I would argue that Crocodile is the first hints that Luffy was going to eventually be very outside his depth. His defeat of Crocoboy is framed as a triumphant fluke. Then Luffy is Enel's weakness. Lucci is a pure brawl that pushes Luffy in much the same way as Arlong but at the next level. Moria takes the whole team, the second hint at Luffy actually being a small fry. Then the events of SA through Marineford.
Some argue that Crocodile was put too early in the story, and while I tend to agree with it, Morj makes me think that it was also in Oda's plans in the long run. Crocodile pretty much killed Luffy twice and only lost because of his massive ego and arrogance. Same with Enel + Luffy being his natural counter
@Jordan Vance true. One thing that the Blackbeard vs Ace fight showed us (and not for the first time) is how confident a logia user can get after years of not having to experience how does it feel to take serious damage with a normal body, and guys like Crocodile and Enel suffered from the same mistake. I like how Whitebeard, although he wasn't a logia, gave 0 fucks when Blackbeard cancelled his fruit and immediately owned him with his bisento.
This video is work of art. MF is my favorite arc and this video was perfect and brilliant for me. You are the best OP reviews channel in YT imo Keep doing this stuff 👌
About 2 months ago i decided to read One Piece and as always I had been binge reading it for weeks, then came the end of Sabaody and I really felt that intensity and hype all around MF arc. I was reading at the time 20 chapters at most in one day but when I began reading Impel Down i couldn't stop i just wanted to see and know more and more about what was about to happen and this is what really makes this arc beautiful in my opinion. When I was done (chapter 580) it was 5:30 am in the morning. And i found that i almost read 100 chapter that day! Damn. My first thought was "This, is how you write a war. You should have learnt Kishimoto!"
It's funny how every video you upload ends up with a lot more views than the actual subs of your channel while for most UA-camrs it's the inverse situation. That shows how great you and your content are and the impact you're having on this community, though more people should subscribe
what good story telling is all about, is learning. the reason enies lobby and marineford are so insanely good is we got to learn firsthand, what the potential of the world of one piece is like, in enies lobby luffy had to evolve physically to stand a chance to beat the world as we saw it then, and in marineford we just saw how far ahead the world was still, how many secrets and powerful characters there are still that luffy cant even begin to beat yet, and the journey on is the strawhats discovering those secrets and evolving again to beat the insane challenges, and we as readers are learning all that, we are really addicted at learning more about the world of one piece, thats all that matters and the reason why one piece is so successful if learning at school was half as good and entertaining as learning in one piece is, we would all be astronauts wouldnt we but i think slowly we are going to get there, already theres research in gamification of learning
I love these videos of yours. These analysis videos breaking down thematic elements and storytelling. This is what you do best and it’s a great thing to watch
Marineford was a defining moment of my life, and I still feel that I have so much to think about it yet. It's where you find out that determination, alone, does not mean strength. And we see consequences for the actions of everybody - the admirals, white beard, black beard, ace, luffy, jimbe, law, shanks. It's about turning the world upside down, the characters personal world and the whole one.
@17:56 I really liked this part of the video. I've been theorizing that Luffy's Awakening will involve Luffy becoming an actual Giant to defeat Kaidou because as I say in my analysis: Luffy is the Thematic Giant of the Story. You've just validated my thoughts here. lol.
What I love most about Marineford are Ace’s last words and Whitebeard telling to the whole world that the One Piece does exist 😭😭. Edit: Sabaody Archipelago is where Luffy realized he’s not strong enough to protect his crew, hence be a true leader in his eyes, along with the whole crew feeling useless to their captain. So, many reasons why I love Sabaody, but the decision each individual takes after the split is just amazing, all for their captain who they know can be clumsy and goofy, but yet strong and reliable as a pirate. The man who once saved them and now the man they chose to follow as the future Pirate King.
A friend of mine, new to the story, was complaining about the "lack of consequences" to the Straw Hats after everything they had done before Sabaody and in retrospective, with this video, I'm sure that that was Oda's intent, to make us think that Luffy would somehow win and get away with his actions again just because he's the protagonist. Starting with Sabaody (not counting Amazon Lily), Luffy took nothing but L's and/or had to run most of the time, from Kizaru and Kuma till in the war itself.
Damn, that fresh new setup is lit Mr. Morj. On a related note. The crescendo of emotion as the chapter progressed made me want to stand there and fight along with the scabbards. 5/5 would say I'd fight even if it costs me my life
Another big factor of why this arc was so hype was that the strawhats just got totally annihilated before it started, and we all came with the expectation that Luffy will show off his strength and somehow against all odds will somehow achieve his goal to keep the story going, because it was build up in a way that failure means death, but then it wasn't it went on because Luffy didn't succeed. It played with our expectations. ACE, Luffys brother, son of Gol D. Rodger, son of whitebeard and his first commander, hyped up being equally strong if not stronger than smoker, one of the very few up to only a few chapters beforehand totally overpowered logia type devil fruit users was captured, but a whole army was there to rescue him, plus Luffy with plot armor, even if whitebeard dies Ace would survive, and if ace died whitebeard would surly destroy all of marinefort right? NO! Oda played us, he, for the first time showcased the death of a character, and not only one but two. It opened everything up, everything was new, everything is possible now, this story going on for years, and this one, pretty short arc changed everything One piece lives of its world, it lives because everything is possible, we learn stuff for years, began to understand how the world runs, and then everything changes. All the foreshadowing and everything set so far let us belive we missed something, and probaply we did.
Awesome thanks for the Analysis. Very grateful for the time and detail you put into every video, but especially the analysis vids. You always find a way to allow me to appreciate One Piece arcs more.
I remember I read up to thriller bark and some of sabaody and took a long break picking back up in at the start of dressrosa. I had a friend fill me in and he quickly went into marineford. I couldn't believe something so huge could have actually happened. Ace is my favorite character and I'll never get over him being gone 💔🔥
This video got me unbelievably hyped. Thanks Morj for consistently articulating what I’ve felt while reading this masterpiece of a series. However, I’m surprised you didn’t really go in depth about Ace’s death. I think the death of Ace (and to a lesser extent, Whitebeard) played a huge role into the way the arc impacted the reader. It must’ve been intentional that the most grandiose conflict in the series lead to the first confirmed death in the series outside of a flashback. While Oda has generally been extremely good at raising the stakes and increasing tension within a story arc, this is the first time that death has been a factor, and this instance I think really cemented Luffy’s place in the world this arc, more than any other event during the war could’ve.
You found your new gig! This breakdown had me enthralled and my ears perked while simultaneously playing FF14. I see you being the next Mother's Basement or Super Eyepatch Wolf. Great video and analysis. I can't wait to hear your view on other arcs and series.
Thanks for an awesome analysis of an awesome war! It really puts into perspective the vast depth of Oda's story and insane hype gradually built up, all for a massive impact on the story, characters, and us, until now. Title's spot on :))
Really really good video, but there's a very important aspect of how hype this arc was that you didn't really mention: that being the incredible ways Oda wrote the arc so that Luffy, despite being as under-powered as you said, was still the central protagonist of the arc and one of the key players of the war. It boggles my mind how well Oda did this in such an unforced and natural way. Though, I think there's so much to dissect that it would probably take its own video to do justice!
"He didn't even get serious until Arlong" Don't gloss over Don Krieg man, he legit pushed Luffy to his LIMIT. Arlong didn't push him that far, only Krieg did, before they hit the Grand Line. Though you could also argue that Kuro pushed him as far if not further than Arlong considering all the cuts and bleeding. He doesn't SHOW a lot of his pain when he's serious so it really might just be me reading into it, but Krieg 100% pushed him harder than Arlong.
Your videos made me see One Piece in a completely different sense. I have always LOVED OP but I don’t think I ever truly respected it’s characters, story writing etc. BUT now, as I’m exploring more animes... I realise how bleak all of them were in front of OP in over aspect or the other and your videos were a great catalyst for that

Yeah Odas a brilliant bastard to tug at our emotions seeing Ace as a kid knowing he’s going to die, it was truly heartbreaking.
Also the end of bloodline of the pirate king
That was a heartbreaking outcome for a number of reasons. Oda did that quite well.

This. This was the real “most ambitious crossover”

I was reading week-to-week when Marineford was being published and man...the excitement was off the charts with every early chapter.
The Ace is Roger's son reveal, the reveal of Akainu's power, the reveal of Whitebeard's power and overwhelming strength...it was all so amazing.
9:15 Morj got that next level observation Haki I see.
(P.s Zoro had a similar revelation upon being struck down by Mihawk)
Because he just couldn't do it.
First episode he's king of Ls
Whereas luffy has always shown to be taking Ws left right and centre, Luffy while he does have the will power is also extremely lucky.

Excellent analysis. Hype is the perfect word for it. One Piece's greatest strength has been it's commitment to long term storytelling and Marineford was decades of set up finally paying off. All while the story tells you that this grandest moment is only the half way point. Hype.
Even after catching every new video on this channel for as long as I have, the sheer quality of your analysis still surprises me every time

Just imagine wano ark animation for the whole series

This was one of my shortest 20 minutes ever.

Can I just say, that Buggy made me love the arc immensely
what good story telling is all about, is learning. the reason enies lobby and marineford are so insanely good is we got to learn firsthand, what the potential of the world of one piece is like, in enies lobby luffy had to evolve physically to stand a chance to beat the world as we saw it then, and in marineford we just saw how far ahead the world was still, how many secrets and powerful characters there are still that luffy cant even begin to beat yet, and the journey on is the strawhats discovering those secrets and evolving again to beat the insane challenges, and we as readers are learning all that, we are really addicted at learning more about the world of one piece, thats all that matters and the reason why one piece is so successful
if learning at school was half as good and entertaining as learning in one piece is, we would all be astronauts wouldnt we
but i think slowly we are going to get there, already theres research in gamification of learning
I love these videos of yours. These analysis videos breaking down thematic elements and storytelling. This is what you do best and it’s a great thing to watch
I thought the same thing, when I seen the Marineford Arc. I was like "Damn, this is just the beginning😮"
The video cannot be more clear, thank you Mr Morj !
Great video Morj, your analysis are always incredible!
@17:56 I really liked this part of the video. I've been theorizing that Luffy's Awakening will involve Luffy becoming an actual Giant to defeat Kaidou because as I say in my analysis: Luffy is the Thematic Giant of the Story. You've just validated my thoughts here. lol.
I knew you would be here lol i thought the same thing
nope
@@centurymemes1208 I was correct though. lol.
Amazing analysis as usual. You did a great job putting Marineford into perspective for people who were reading it at the time.
What I love most about Marineford are Ace’s last words and Whitebeard telling to the whole world that the One Piece does exist 😭😭.
Edit:
Sabaody Archipelago is where Luffy realized he’s not strong enough to protect his crew, hence be a true leader in his eyes, along with the whole crew feeling useless to their captain.
Ahhmm it starts when they encounter Aokiji on Long Ring Island.
This arc in one word: AAAAACCCCCCCCCCCCCEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEUUUUUUUUUUU

Damn, that fresh new setup is lit Mr. Morj.

Great video, you basically explained how great the arc is in this vid 👍
So many Morj videos lately. Thank you for the hard work!
